Two Storm Wood by Philip Gray is the choice for this month's Church Times Book Club. On the podcast this week, Richard Lamey, who has written this month's essay about the book, is in conversation with Sarah Meyrick. Two Storm Wood is set immediately after the First World War, when special battalions were given the grim task of retrieving the dead from the battlefields of northern France. A bold young woman, Amy Vanneck, sets out across the Channel to find out what became of her fiancé, who was listed as “missing, presumed dead”. Her search uncovers some unsettling truths, not only about her fiancé, a former teacher and choirmaster, but the other young soldiers traumatised by the hell of trench warfare. The novel picks up pace and tension as a gruesome discovery is made by Captain Mackenzie, and, together with Amy, a hunt begins to track down the psychopath responsible for this atrocious war crime. Canon Richard Lamey is the Rector of St Paul's, Wokingham, and Area Dean of Sonning, in the diocese of Oxford. Our chapter opens in Marlow, that bustling, lively, river-side town, with our esteemed travellers - sweet-natured, mischief-prone Harris, considered and affable George, our ever-observant narrator, and that whirling dervish canine companion, Montmorency. We voyage through history, through crumbling stone walls hiding whispered secrets, and the idyllic country paths teeming with long-lost summers roaming in the fragrance of memory.Venture upstream towards Sonning and stand before the grandeur of Bisham Abbey, a relic of time, graced by the footsteps of Anne of Cleves, Queen Elizabeth, and the infamous Knights Templar. Jeremiah's delightful prose brings alive the spectral shadows of the Lady Holy and the striking figures of history that graced its halls.Weary from the day's exploits, we escape to Hurley Village, a time-frozen alcove where the whispers of a thousand years echo in your ears. Savour the enigma of the infamous Medmenham monks, known widely as the "Hell Fire Club." Explore an Abbey that promises a world of stern and strange, pious Cistercian monks cloaked in silence, and the curious, irreverent jesters who dared to disturb it centuries later.Explore the myriad faces of the delightful Montmorency as his mortal enmity with cats leads to more than one incident of hilarious tom-foolery. His antics are sure to leave you chortling in delight. And who can forget the escapade at the Civil Service Stores, where a fox-terrier brought forth a pandemonium that would make even the strongest crumble.Steer with us through breath-taking landscapes bathed in the golden light of sunset, and down to the sombre bareness that trails Henley. Discover a mirthless departure from Marlow, an impressive procession of man, beast, and some adorable drifters. Beware the steam launches, the bane of every rowing gentleman's existence, as our trio engages in a saga of exciting encounters.A chance consumption of river water, a sobering encounter with a peaceful dog, and a mysteriously disappearing Harris (along with that day's dinner), make sure that adventure never veers too far from our unsuspecting heroes.

In this episode I talk to Professor Alastair Driver, environmental powerhouse and Director at Rewilding Britain. The interview was so long that I had to split it into two parts, so Part 1 covers the basics of rewilding and a lot more besides. Ali is a very engaging and passionate speaker, so this podcast and Part 2 are a must for anyone interested in the subject. I held the interview at Ali's Pond Local Nature Reserve in Sonning, near Reading. This tiny LNR is named after the man himself for the work he put into making it, and it is an oasis of peace, calm and nature. You can see the photos and read more at https://www.whatifyoujustleaveit.info/rewilding-pioneer/ali-driver but this and the next episodes are less about the photos and more about the man. Any comments and reviews very welcome, and thank you for listening.

On Balls Radio today Phil Dobbie suggests someone parks a Go Home van outside No. 10 – one of the vans used to tell migrants to leave. It seems only fair. The decision probably won’t rest with her – listen in to find out how you can tell when you are not wanted any more, and more about the small village in Berkshire that she will be returning to.

Idag står Grekland i fokus i Sonning i P1.

The River Thames was recently selected as the winner of the international Theiss River Prize, an award which celebrates outstanding achievement in river management and restoration. Fifty years after being declared biologically dead, the Thames scooped the prize thanks to a dramatic turnaround in its environment. Environment organisations now say that the Thames is the cleanest it has been in more than 150 years, with almost 400 new habitats being created to allow wildlife back to the river which is now teeming with fish, and home to returning salmon, otter and sea trout populations. Helen Mark begins an exploration of the Thames at Woolwich in South East London with author, Iain Sinclair, who has described the river as a story of ruin and revival and the very lifeblood of London. Travelling west along the river to the Millennium Bridge, Helen meets up with Fiona Haughey. Fiona describes herself as an inter-tidal archaeologist and the river as one of the world's largest self-excavating sites and Helen joins her in a beachcombing search for some of the river's neolithic roots. Further along the river banks at Putney Bridge, Helen finds a group of volunteers from environmental charity, Thames 21. Led by Vic Richardson, the group are working on Project Habitat, an initiative to enhance certain areas of the River Thames by building artifical islands and river banks to encourage suitable habitats and attract wildlife. Leaving the city behind, Helen heads out into the Berkshire countryside where she meets Alastair Driver, conservation manager with the Environment Agency. Cycling along the river through Sonning-on-Thames, Alastair tells Helen how this particular stretch of water near his home now runs crystal clear in the summer and how sheer hard work along the whole of the Thames has resulted in this amazing clean-up story. Finally, Helen joins volunteer river warden, Dick Mayon White from the River Thames Society, a charity which aims to protect and preserve the river. Dick takes Helen for a stroll along a stretch of the river near Port Meadow and explains why it means so much to him and why it is so important to preserve the river for future generations.
