Sonya Shelton is a successful businesswoman and CEO of Executive Leadership Consulting. During today's episode, she will share some purpose-driven strategies for executives and those who want to become better leaders through mindfulness. Sonya helps companies grow and succeed by focusing on passionate culture and profitable strategies. Sonya is a respected author and international speaker, known for her expertise in leadership. She created the Red Thread Leadership™ model, a simple and effective way for leaders to navigate uncertainty and build a strong, motivated team. With over 25 years of experience working with various organizations, including The Walt Disney Company, Sonya shares the best practices for creating a passionate culture even in challenging times. She's on the Forbes Coaches Council and is the author of the #1 Amazon bestseller “You're an Executive, But Are You a Leader. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Contact Info Website: www.ExecutiveLeader.com Website: www.RedthreadLeadership.com Most Influential Person Zen Master Seung Sahn Effect on Emotions Sonya emphasized the importance of not immediately reacting to situations, as she had mentioned earlier in her story about bullying. Instead, she focuses on recognizing when she doesn't need to react and choosing to respond from a different place. For bigger emotions, such as grief from losing loved ones, Sonya finds solace in fully embracing the waves of emotions without trying to change or avoid them. Sonya believes that by allowing herself to fully experience the emotion, it dissipates more quickly compared to suppressing it. Sonya explained that mindfulness goes beyond just not reacting; it also involves being present with deep emotions and allowing them to move through you, preventing the tendency to hold onto them. Thoughts on Breathing Sonya explained that breathing is a fundamental aspect of mindfulness and something we always have access to. Sonya, being a meditator herself, acknowledged that it's not always possible to stop and meditate in every situation. However, she emphasized that we can always focus on our breath. More specifically, when we feel overwhelmed, stressed, or fearful, simply connecting with our breath and taking a few deep breaths can bring about a significant change in our state of mind. Even just four or five intentional breaths can have a powerful impact on how we feel. Sonya recognized the accessibility and transformative nature of breathing as a tool for mindfulness. The above suggestions are purpose-driven strategies for executives, entrepreneurs, corporate employees, or anyone seeking strategies for success. Suggested Resources Book: You're an Executive, but Are You a Leader: The Executive's Simple Guide to Creating, Communicating and Achieving the Vision by Sonya Shelton Book: Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life by Jon Kabat-Zinn App: n/a Bullying Story Sonya shared a story about how mindfulness made a difference when she experienced bullying in the workplace. She explained that while people often talk about bullying in schools, it's also important to address the issue in the workplace. Even at a place like Disney, known as the happiest place on earth, Sonya encountered a bully who was another executive. During a conversation about a project, the executive started screaming at Sonya. Instead of reacting with anger or shouting back, Sonya turned inward and checked in with her own feelings. She calmly suggested ending the meeting and discussing things later when they could both be calmer. Despite the executive's continued yelling as Sonya left, she realized she didn't have to participate or let it affect her. Sonya shared that by using mindfulness techniques, she was able to stay calm and not let the bully's behavior impact her. She highlighted the importance of discussing workplace bullying and not accepting it, while also emphasizing that mindfulness can help individuals maintain their composure and choose not to engage in such negative interactions. Sonya Shelton founded Executive Leadership Consulting in 2007 from her passion for partnering with leaders and high achievers to create a clear vision and build work environments where employees are fulfilled and completely committed to their organisation's success. Sonya joins Lucinda this week to talk about strategy, culture, and how we can best encourage both in the organisations we lead. KEY TAKEAWAYS Many companies use strategy and culture to forge ahead, but focus too heavily on one without balancing the need for both at the same time. HR professionals must be very connected with the business leadership to first understand what the underlying strategy is, and what kind of culture needs to be created around that. Identifying the purpose and why is a fundamental. In terms of mission, the question becomes how we can deliver on that initial purpose. Whenever there is a lack of trust or sense of conflict, always go back to the root - mission and vision - and work out how the conflict can be brought together under those elements. BEST MOMENTS 'How do you as HR professionals connect with your business strategy?' 'We're very much the glue in terms of creating a balance' 'The mission is how we do things externally. The values are how we do those things internally' 'It's called vision for a reason. Sonya Shelton, CEO at Executive Leadership Consulting, joins host Eugene Signorini to discuss the importance of being a good leader to those on the frontline. Also the author of “You're An Executive But Are You a Leader?,” Sonya shares her invaluable insight on what it takes to be a true leader.     Takeaways    Burnout is the biggest challenge facing the frontline workforce today. Going through the pandemic and supply chain issues has been a struggle and those on the frontline are the ones dealing with all the challenges. Frontline workers experience anxiety just like everyone else, and their mental health should also be paid attention to.   Culture and Strategy shouldn't be enemies, but they should be working together in order to create a great employee experience. You want to inspire people and be a leader. You want to have followers, not people who are compliant with you.  A lot of companies lose sight of what it means to be a frontline worker. You want to make sure deskless employees are given everything they need to succeed. It's easy to lose sight of the small wins in a company because of what is happening in the world right now, but it's important to celebrate even the little victories to motivate your employees. Having a set process in place is critical. You need to have this so the employees know what steps to follow and it eases the burden on them.  Quote of the show   9:20 “If you're just relying on your position or your title, or the power that the organization has given you through that title, then you have compliance, you don't have followers. It's really about how can you inspire people and lead them towards a vision.” Links   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ceosonyashelton/ Twitter: @SonyaShelton Company Website: https://executiveleader.com Book: https://www.amazon.com/Youre-Executive-But-Leader-Communicating-ebook/dp/B00K5DRNAC Ways to Tune In:   Amazon Music - https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/2f4ecd92-6468-4769-b0bf-254e236510b7/FRONTLINE-INNOVATORS  Apple Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/frontline-innovators/id1572329402 Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/29m3wnK8pbFjdSvJ9wjmyS Stitcher - https://www.stitcher.com/show/frontline-innovators Google Play - https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZnJvbnRsaW5laW5ub3ZhdG9ycy5jb20vZmVlZC54bWw YouTube - https://youtu.be/CUzKUGh0CU4
