Episode 291: 4 Reasons Your Church Struggles with Change Episode 291: 4 Reasons Your Church Struggles with Change History: People think of their church as they did at their personal points of conversion change threatens their history change threatens their structure and control grief Fear: People are afraid they won't like the change not all change works out well the unknown is always risky Trust: People question leadership motivation more than ever before transitions and search teams people follow their closest relationships peer pressure is both positive and negative Communication: People feel like change is forced on them Possible reactions Leaders give up on change = church declines and dies Leaders push change too fast = church rebels and maybe splits; pastor loses credibility Leaders push change alone = pastor loses credibility; most likely limits his tenure Some thoughts: Make history your friend, not your enemy...celebrate the past. Acknowledge the emotional nature of change. Vulnerability helps. Let trustworthiness and faithfulness become your personal ambition. Over-communicate on a two-way street. Allow for feedback to your communication.
Isn't it funny how, once you get settled into a good routine, something will change that makes it out of whack? Your child finally starts sleeping through the night, but then they start waking up super early. Or you dedicated nights for your quiet time, but then your teenager decides to use that time to chat with you before bed. Or you theme out your work days, only to have appointments or sports or something interfere. And so you go back to the drawing board to modify your routine and make it work for you. Not everything in life requires a major change. Sometimes it's just changing something simple, something small. But sometimes it is, indeed, bigger than you anticipated, and you have to adjust what you are doing. We've been going through some more life changes recently, and today I wanted to share a few of those with you, as well as how I've been re-evaluating what that means for me. “The victim mindset dilutes the human potential. By not accepting personal responsibility for our circumstances, we greatly reduce our power to change them.” – Steve Maraboli . I all too often hear my clients say things like, “I have no choice with X situation, so I just put my head down and keep working.” This always makes me pause because I have learned that we always have a choice, yet sometimes it may feel like we are victims of our circumstances or situations. The choices before us may not be easy to see, understand, or navigate, but there is always a choice because we are in control of our own lives, businesses, or careers. My guest this week is back for a second time, and we are going to explore the notion of how to move from victim to victor. Show Notes: [2:26] - There is a stigma associated with learning disabilities. [3:31] - Jason describes his own experience as an educator and having his own exceptionalities as a student. [5:37] - Just because we don't acknowledge something, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. We need to use our voices. [7:20] - Parent and family engagement is crucial. Jason shares how even at pre-planning, he was able to connect with families and better understand them. [9:29] - It takes dedicated educators to see the issues and present solutions. [10:50] - Many schools and school districts send surveys and gather reports and feedback from families. But where does that data go? [12:01] - If we are not grounded in family and community engagement standards, then we will continue to believe that the social and emotional development of children does not impact academic outcomes. [13:19] - Learning does not stop or end at school. It is ongoing. [15:31] - School culture needs to change. When black students enter a school, what do they see and is it reflected in the curriculum? [17:40] - Make the data real. [19:22] - How are we being intentional about making sure that students are present and know they belong? [20:31] - Education is power. [21:37] - Get connected with the people in the community who are doing the work. Partnership is key. [23:20] - It is challenging, but it's not impossible. [24:39] - When our teachers are not well, we have to be realistic about how impactful they are. [27:04] - We can't ask educators to do more if they don't have the resources in order to do the thing we're asking them to do. [30:52] - Jason is the National Director of Partnerships for the National Parents Union. [32:08] - In many communities, parents don't have the information in order to make decisions for their children. [35:05] - A lot of times, we bring our beliefs into what we do, but we need to be intentional and inclusive. [37:10] - We cannot be gatekeepers that prevent black students from the best education they can receive. [38:20] - Jason explains how to get connected with the National Parents Union and the free resources they offer. About Our Guest: Jason B. Do great leaders make history, or does history make great leaders? Whether it's a political upheaval like what Napoleon faced, an economic depression as with Roosevelt, or a company facing an existential challenge, great leaders have historically grasped these moments as opportunities for significant change. In fact, the desire to bring about positive change and make a difference is a common thread among all outstanding leaders. But while studying successful leaders offers valuable lessons, learning from past failures can be equally insightful. In this episode, Ramona and guest, Moshik Temkin, have a captivating conversation full of engaging stories about historical leaders, both the successful and some very unsuccessful events that have shaped the world we live in today. Moshik is recognized as a distinguished professor who has significantly contributed to the fields of leadership and history. His expertise has led to teaching positions at reputable institutions, including Harvard. Temkin's scholarly essays and articles have garnered attention in esteemed publications including The New York Times, The Nation, Journal of Democracy, The New Republic, and the Los Angeles Times. His recent book, Warriors, Rebels, and Saints: The Art of Leadership from Machiavelli to Malcolm X, is a comprehensive examination of historical leadership that has been praised for its depth and insight into the journeys of past leaders. One of our favorite quotes from the show: "I think what they had in common is that they spoke their truth. They were not concerned with whether people liked them or not. In fact, they understood that sometimes, and this might not be a pleasant thing to say, but sometimes, really, transformational leadership means that you are going to alienate people, some people, and you are going to create enemies. And Franklin Roosevelt himself said to the American people, he said, I want you to judge me by the enemies that I have made." Check it out here. What do I need to know to navigate transitions well as a leader? Personal and leadership transitions are a natural part of our lives as leaders. There is no question that at some point in your life and leadership you will be navigating transitions. Now imagine you are leading a whole group of people through a transition! The tricky part is that nobody traverses transition in the same way; and you've got to lead them through. Tim Austin joins us today to answer our listener's questions about navigating transitions. Having navigated his own major transitions, Tim also partners with leaders traveling through transitions to use them as fertile ground for clarity and growth. We create space for intentionality AND hold space to become aware of God's surprises that will come up along the way. (1:52) Engage the slowing down process rather than getting to the next thing as quickly as possible. (5:54) Debriefing, unpacking your story, telling your story. It opens up headspace and heart space for dreaming, which comes next. (7:41) If you see it coming and you can work toward building a team that will support you well in that transition and really hold space in different ways (13:41) We can often attach ourselves to our roles. Those aren't really helpful in transition. Transition is kind of a stripping away of these secondary identities to get to our true identity (15:18) In transition we are simultaneously looking ahead planning, but we're also trying to bring closure to other areas. Use the RAFT Tool: (19:19) Reconciliation - closure to relationships Affirmation - celebrate and affirm Farewell - saying goodbye intentionally Think Destination - don't jump here before RAF While traveling transition, build some intentional rhythm and routines in your life that are non-negotiables. Doyle was born in Edmonton, now in the land down under and I interviewed him from Edmonton! We talk about how we met through an initiative with The Keenfolks on global digital transformation study. Doyle shares how he got into tech, that he was a pilot in the Canadian Air Force, and that he first got digital years back in Winnipeg Manitoba investing a lot at that time into building out an online experience. Doyle shares many examples how organizations of all sizes can and should be leveraging digital. He shares some must listen to tips on how to put a plan in place and start harnessing Big Data and Digital. Doyle talks about AI and how even small business can gain value for their business using public cloud solutions like Facebook and use their tech as Big Data AI tools. We just start getting into sales funnel and what it should look like but that will have to be for a future episode!
"The Wave of Change" Episode 023 "How Ice Climbing is like Cybersecurity" In this episode Helen Yu shares her Iceland ice climbing experience, the lessons learned and how that experience applies to Cybersecurity. Below is an abstract of Helen's keynote speech in Zurich, Switzerland. “Crampons make it easy to climb the ice without slipping,” says a guide to scaling Vatnajökull, Iceland's largest glacier. Really? counters cybersecurity keynoter Helen Yu, who nearly lost her life ascending that majestic ice cap when one of her crampons suddenly popped off her boot. (Thank goodness for carabiners!) Which brings us to cybersecurity. Lesson one, says Ms. Yu: Assume nothing. “Expecting employees to stay cyber-vigilant is like expecting crampons to stay in place while scaling a glacier's jagged contours,” she says. “Because both are naïve assumptions, you must prepare for the worst.” Lesson two: Be brutally realistic when assessing risk, and for good reason: New vulnerabilities surface daily. As more employees acquire more mobile devices, the risks to enterprise networks mount exponentially. Much like climbers must see the “bite” in Vatnajökull's mesmeric beauty, CISOs must see the threats in otherwise impressive landscapes of workforces that are always on, always connected. MIT certified in cybersecurity management, Ms. Yu will share strategies for enhancing cyber-risk assessment and strengthening cyber-awareness training at a time when 90% of all attacks result from human error. Helen Yu believes real growth thrives at the crossroads of #tech and #humanity. There, she contends, is where customer loyalty and love thrive. Described as “a rare combination of intellect, work ethic, and compassion often not found in C-level executives,” Ms. Yu has led multibillion-dollar revenue growth and profitability for pre-IPOs and Fortune 500 enterprises, including Oracle, Adobe and Marketo. After watching many start-up technology founders rise and fail, Ms. Yu launched Tigon Advisory in 2017 as a growth accelerator. No stranger to tech, she has been named a Top 10 Global Influencer in Digital Transformation by IBM, Top 50 Women in Tech by Awards Magazine, Global Top 30 Women in Finance by Onalytica, and Top 10 Cybersecurity and AI Thought Leader by Thinkers360. When not scaling Mount Everest or ice climbing glaciers, you can find Ms. Yu on Twitter @YuHelenYu.
The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics
Hopefully, you tuned in last week for the special anniversary episode, where I went over the top episodes by downloads, your votes and some of my favorites. I also gave some of my book recommendations and a sneak peek behind the scenes with the top questions I get asked, the weird thing I hear all the time now…and so much more. Today, we are back into the swing of things with a behavioral economics foundations episode on mental accounting. This concept was mentioned briefly in the biases series, but today we are going to dig into what this really is and just how much it impacts our approach to money, risk, time and more. CLICK HERE FOR YOUR FREE DOWNLOAD! Show Notes: [05:02] The concept of mental accounting was introduced by nobel prize winner Richard Thaler, and is based on humans’ illogical approach to value in relative terms instead of looking at it as an absolute. [05:31] Three examples by Richard Thaler of mental accounting. [07:41] These are all examples of the way that mental accounting can impact the decisions we make. [08:17] Money and accounts should be perfectly fungible (that is an economics term for interchangeable). It shouldn’t matter if money was in a savings account, or a checking account or your pocket or a 401k…it would all exchange exactly the same. [09:32] Our brain segregates when thinking about money. This is one of the reasons the field of behavioral economics was needed…traditional economics does not account for the importance of this phenomenon. [10:10] The three ways money is commonly labeled: expenses are grouped into budgets like food, rent, and entertainment. Wealth is separated into accounts (checking, emergency or “rainy day” funds, and retirement). And lastly income is looked at in categories: namely regular or windfall. [12:35] Much like regular accounting, in mental accounting, individuals will book and post any occurring or planned transactions to the mental account. [15:59] When businesses are reporting their year-end earnings and losses, they always want to have a positive year end, which could make it tempting to hold on to losses until the next year. [16:42] If you are looking like you are going to have a bad year and have no option but to take a loss, general wisdom is to throw in as much negative and expense as you can. If it is going to be negative, might as well have it all come in at once. (Known as “taking the big bath”) [17:13] Adding a small amount to an already large payment doesn’t feel the same as having that payment on its own. This is because of decoupling – where you remove the pain of the payment away from the joy of the purchase. [18:28] There are some times where people significantly prefer to prepay over delaying their payments. Vacations are enjoyed more when they are prepaid because they feel free. [24:10] The way the consumer uses their mental accounting transforms something that can be very expensive hobby (like wine collecting) into one that is seen as free. [25:24] People can and often do plan for expenses in one way and experience it completely differently in the moment. [26:57] Internalize how the brain is wired to make its decisions around mental accounting. Think about how this has impacted you and how it can impact your customers. [27:52] Expenses are thought about in budgets, and wealth is considered in accounts. [28:03] The most tempting and easiest accounts to spend from are the current assets, this is your checking account and physical cash. [28:13] It's less tempting to spend from the current wealth category, which is made up of other liquid assets – savings accounts, stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. [28:33] The next, even less tempting category is equity (like that in a home or car you own). Future income is the least tempting category. These are your retirement accounts. [29:27] Those who have issues with self control should set up accounts that are off limits and put together automatic transfers so they are not tempted. [31:03] An example of losing a movie ticket and losing $10 that shows when the loss is associated with the outing to the movies, it is aversive, but when it is not associated with the outing, it is still annoying, but doesn’t impact the mental account for the movie. [31:22] Money that you earn in your paycheck is considered different than money you win in the lottery or find on the ground. [32:58] How will the mental account allocation impact the way the gift is used? And how does that line up with the intention behind the gift? [35:54] While losses should be lumped together, gains should be separated out to really feel their value - don’t wrap all the Christmas presents in one box. [36:26] Brands can use mental accounting to their advantage in the way they advertise products. How can you use this frame on mental accounting in your business? [37:03] Mental accounting impacts more than money. [39:43] Context is important in the way that people react. [42:53] Being aware of how the sausage is made can impact your enjoyment of it. Keep this in mind when you present pricing to customers. [43:10] One other scarce resource impacted by mental accounting is time. [43:41] Labeling time as only in the “family time” account makes it so “work time” isn’t even in the consideration of what to do on Saturday morning. [45:20] Are there times where you are wasting high value productive time? Take a step back and think about how you could better allocate your mental time account. Thanks for listening.
