PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Parker Finn (SMILE) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey so far. From struggling to make ends meet after college and making short films… to the two shorts that he felt showed what he can actually do (THE HIDEBEHIND and LAURA HASN'T SLEPT)… to the attention that LAURA HASN'T SLEPT received by being selected for the doomed 2020 South By Southwest Film Festival (it was cancelled due to COVID) and being watched by curious industry executives through a private link with a leaked password… to the development of SMILE and all of the things that almost went wrong through the production process… to SMILE not even looking like it would be released in theaters… to SMILE's jaw dropping 200+ million box office take worldwide in 2022… Parker's story is not the overnight success you may think it was! This episode is the perfect dose of inspiration complete with an amazing happy ending!
We had the best time chatting with one of Australia's most exciting comedians, Alex Hines! Alex is a hoot. We made her watch a movie about chess. "Critical Thinking" is a biographical drama film loosely based on the US National Chess Champions from Miami Jackson High School - the first inner city team to win the championship. Not only does this film star our mate John Leguizamo, but he also directed it! Excuse me!? What a legend! This film was supposed to premiere at South By Southwest Film Festival in March 2020, but because someone ate a bat, the films release was pushed back to September 2020. Hosted on Acast. In this episode of our coverage for the SXSW Film Festival, we're bringing you the short films and episodic series that (in our opinion) have the best titles! Considering these names include the words slut, dicks, and gay, that should tell you a lot about us.In the short film Aspirational Slut, we meet Rosemary, who has just gotten her heart broken, and decides she needs to forget about love and focus on having random sex for the first time in her life. We speak to director Caroline Lindy and the star Ellyn Jameson about the importance of women's sexual liberation, awkward sex scenes, and reclaiming the word slut. The animated episodic series My Year of Dicks follows Pam, a teenager trying desperately to lose her virginity, and the dicks (literally and metaphorically) she meets along the way. We're joined by director Sara Gunnarsdottir, showrunner/writer Pamela Ribon, and lead actor Brie Tilton. In other words, get ready for a Zoom room full of women ready to commiserate about our younger years! We dive deeper into Pamela's childhood memoir that this series is based on, and the fantasy of a young girl's crush vs. the awkward (and sometimes gross) reality. In the short film Gay Haircut, Krista is a bisexual comedian who starts dating a trans woman and is ready to come out- and needs a gay haircut to accompany her rebrand. We sat down with director Jude Harris and writer/star Krista Fatka, who explained how the short is semi-autobiographical, what it was like to work with their significant others, and behind the scenes info on the hilarious haircut scene. And of course Erin and Ange had to share how they used to have matching gay haircuts. Thanks to our friends over at Lost Republic for sponsoring our SXSW 2022 coverage, and for being The Official Whiskey of The Bitch Talk Podcast... visit them at their website, www.LostRepub.comYou can follow director Caroline Lindy on IGYou can follow actor Ellyn Jameson on IG & FBYou can follow the episodic series My Year of Dicks on IG & TwitterYou can follow director Sara Gunnarsdottir on IGYou can follow writer Pamela Ribon on IG & TwitterYou can follow actor Brie Tilton on IG & Twitter & FBYou can follow director Jude Harris on IG & TwitterYou can follow writer/actor Krista Fatka on IG & Twitter--Thanks for listening and for your support! Welcome to Flash Back Friday! With 600+ episodes, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with our new listeners (and maybe new to our regular listeners). To cap off Filipino American History Month (October), we're flashing back to some of our favorite interviews with Filipino artists from the past year! We were blown away by not only the amount of Filipino stories, but also the diversity of stories that we've covered in just the past 12 months. We laugh at the quirkiness of the short film Learning Tagalog with Kayla (with writer/director/star Kayla Galang), we discuss the power of Filipino cuisine in the superhero film Lumpia With a Vengeance (with writer/director Patricio Ginelsa and stars April Absynth and Katrina Dimaranan), some tears are shed while discussing death and family obligation in the narrative drama Islands (with writer/director Martin Edralin), and we celebrate A Thousand Cuts, a documentary on Filipino-American journalist and 2021 Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa (with director Ramona Diaz and Bay Area Hip-Hop activist Ruby Ibarra). Happy Filipino American History Month, we can't wait to see what kind of stories 2022 will bring!Due to time constraints, we couldn't include every Filipino artist interview in this episode, but if you're thirsty for more, check out our coverage of the film The Fabulous Filipino Brothers with writer/director/star Dante Basco, and his sister, co-writer and star Arianna (Boss Bitch) Basco. You can follow director/writer/actor Kayla Galang on Instagram and on her websiteYou can follow director Patricio Ginelsa on IG & FB & TwitterYou can follow actor April Absynth on IG & FB & TwitterYou can follow actor Katrina Dimaranan on IG & TwitterYou can follow Islands the film on TwitterYou can follow director Ramona Diaz on Twitter & IGYou can follow Hip-Hop activist Ruby Ibarra on Twitter & IG & FBYou can follow Filipino-American journalist and author Maria Ressa on Twitter & IGThanks for listening and for your support! We had a lot of fun chatting with co-director of the SXSW documentary Luchadoras (and our new best friend) Paola Calvo. The documentary follows four badass lady wrestlers who live in what is known as one of the most dangerous cities in the world, Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. As if the work they do isn't hard enough, just existing as a woman in this town is a threat to their lives. We discuss feminism, borders, and the importance of comradery between the women of Lucha Libre. And to cap it off, your girls at Bitch Talk may have secured a trip to Mexico to join the ladies of Lucha Libre in the ring! Dealt is a 2017 American documentary film directed by Luke Korem. The film is about the life and career of Richard Turner - who is renowned as one of the world's greatest card magicians, yet he is completely blind. It's a delightful documentary where the filmmaker stays out of it, and lets Richard and his family tell their story. And often Richard's hands do the talking. In the documentary, Richard traces his journey from his troubled childhood, when he began losing his vision, to present day as he relentlessly pursues perfection while struggling with the reality that his biggest weakness might also be his greatest strength. The film features extensive vérité footage of both Richard and his family as well as archive footage of Turner's many television appearances. The film features interviews with notable magicians including Turner, Johnny Thompson, Max Maven, Armando Lucero, and Jason England. Dealt debuted at the 2017 South By Southwest Film Festival in competition where it won the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature. Dealt went on to win four more audience awards and screened at festivals around the world including China and New Zealand. The film is distributed by IFC Films through Sundance Selects. In the US, the film can be viewed on Hulu, Amazon and iTunes. Internationally, it is available on Netflix. --- Please Like/Subscribe/Follow and check out our https://youtube.com/danfrigolette for video content. ----- Covid 19 has spawned some wonderful free time, this podcast is a result of self-quarantine, we at Tiger Crisis vehemently implore you to do the same, #stayhome #staysafe #flattenthecurve Tiger Crisis begins by following the tribulations of Netflix's Documentary Series: Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness.
