On Tuesday's show: We learn about a conference on crime and public safety in Houston tomorrow. Also this hour: Duncan Klussmann, the former superintendent of Spring Branch ISD, explains the problems he has with how that school district is handling its current financial issues, which is a subject he outlined in a recent opinion piece in the Houston Chronicle. Then, we revisit the case of Texas death row inmate Ivan Cantu, who is scheduled to be executed this week. A true crime podcast investigation into his story, new evidence, witnesses recanting, and former jurors coming forward with concerns about his conviction have led some high-profile activists to take up his cause. And we visit the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern, where a new installation called Haha Real fuses animation and video game graphics with traditional art and an immersive soundscape by a Houston-born musician. And the whole thing is inspired by the classic children's story The Velveteen Rabbit.
On Thursday's show: Spring Branch ISD will no longer employee librarians, beginning with the 2024-2025 school year, a district spokesperson confirmed to Houston Landing. We learn about the budget constraints behind this move and how the district plans to keep libraries running at its campuses. Also this hour: The new film The Taste of Things explores love between a chef and his personal cook. We discuss the movie and meet one of Houston's own restaurateur couples on this month's installment of The Bigger Picture. Then, we hear an excerpt of a conversation with author and anti-racism activist Ibram X. Kendi from this week's edition of I See U with Eddie Robinson. And we talk with filmmaker and Houston native Alex Stapleton, who's directed an episode of God Save Texas, a series of three documentaries that just premiered at Sundance and that's based on a book of the same name by Lawrence Wright. Stapleton's contribution is called “The Price of Oil,” and it explores how the oil industry has been a defining economic force in Houston, and specifically on Black people, including multiple generations of Stapleton's family.

On Monday's show: We discuss some substantial developments for Houston-area school districts over the last week or so, including HISD's "district of innovation" designation, Fort Bend ISD announcing a lone finalist to be its new superintendent, and Spring Branch ISD closing two elementary schools and ending a charter school contract. When there's big news in the world of education, we seek insight from Dr. Duncan Klussmann, Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies at the University of Houston. He's also a former Superintendent of Spring Branch ISD. Dr. Klussmann, welcome back to the program… Also this hour: After a Black a student in Barbers Hill was suspended again because of his hairstyle, we discuss how far dress codes in public schools should or should not be allowed to go and who decides where the line is, especially when it's an effort to enforce what many characterize as racist policies. Then, veterinarian Dr. Lori Teller answers your pet care questions. And we get the latest on Houston sports from Jeff Balke.
The 2023 legislative session started with a lot of promise. Lawmakers had a historic $33 billion dollar budget surplus, and there was energy and consensus to address a number of public education issues. Instead, lawmakers failed to give Texas public schools enough funding to even keep up with inflation, much less provide teacher pay raises to help stop the exodus of educators from the classroom. They lost efforts to improve our accountability system so that teachers could focus on their students' learning instead of their performance on standardized tests. They did not pass any policies to help recruit and retain high-quality teachers. There was one tentative win for public education advocates. Thanks to a bipartisan group of determined House lawmakers who withstood enormous pressure from Gov. Greg Abbott — no private school voucher program passed. In this episode, hear from Raise Your Hand Texas' Libby Cohen, Senior Director of Advocacy, Will Holleman, Senior Director of Government Relations, and Bob Popinski, Senior Director of Policy, alongside Georgia Polley, public education advocate from Spring Branch ISD, as they discuss their views on the 88th Legislative Session, and why a victory to stave off vouchers is far from certain, and came at a great cost to Texans.

Don’t let the propaganda confuse you: Justice that varies by class is injustice. 00:00 Sam’s Intro 00:26 – Sam, Chuck and Tom – 8 min – Opening - The ghost gun issue is a red herring; reducing the number of ghost guns to zero would not reduce crime. It would just make it easier to figure out who originally bought the gun, but liberal prosecutors are not prosecuting anyway. Justice for victims is a deterrent for criminals. 08:51 – Jared Woodfill – Attorney and former head of Harris County GOP – 9 min – The goal behind prosecuting Judge Hidalgo’s chief of staff is to have him turn on her in order to reduce his sentence. Part of the case against them is that the contractor was given inside information to beat UT Health Sciences. 18:17 – Lt. Col. Bob Maginnis – Author of "Alliance of Evil" – In 1993 Col. Maginnis saw the decay of LTGBQ coming, and reported it in the Don’t Ask – Don’t Tell policy. We have squandered much of our military capability to the point where we are ill equipped to fight on two fronts. We may have to fight on two fronts at the same time in the near future. China is still our greatest threat. Social engineering in the military is a waste of time, money and moral. 26:30 – Jessica Colon – Republican Strategist – 8 min – The inner circle of Lina Hidalgo’s office is being indicted and Judge Hidalgo needs to be held accountable too, but we cannot count on the Democrats to be just. On May 7th there is a county election for Spring Branch ISD and several other important issues. 34:10 – CloseSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On Friday's Houston Matters: The new and highly-contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus may have sparked a recent COVID-19 outbreak earlier this month. Though infection rates are lower than they were last December, cases of this more contagious variant are on the rise. Harris County has even reported a few cases of breakthrough infections – people who caught COVID even after being fully vaccinated. We learn more from Dr. Peter Hotez of Baylor College of Medicine. Also this hour: With recent discussions about teaching Critical Race Theory in Texas public schools, Casey Fleming, a teacher who taught it at a conservative Houston school, shares her experience. Then, we break down The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of the week. And actor Michael Rosenbaum talks about his career ahead of appearances this weekend at Comicpalooza. NOTE/CORRECTION: Though we incorrectly identified the Kinkaid School as part of Spring Branch ISD in the show, they are actually an independent college preparatory school in the Spring Branch area.
