“Vince is always pulling splinters from his fingers, driven in when he claws at the wooden baseboard, behind the keys,” wrote Bay Area music critic Ralph Gleason, as quoted in Davis author Derrick Bang's newly revised book Vince Guaraldi at the Piano. Splinters? They came from Guaraldi's intense playing, Bang says, nearly nonstop performing, and the worn quality of the pianos he played in clubs. Guaraldi, the Bay Area jazz musician known most for his Peanuts soundtracks and the song “Cast Your Fate to the Wind,” died in 1976 but is arguably more popular than ever, Bang says. Two recent signs: This month's latest archival release of music from a Peanuts special, It Was a Short Summer, Charlie Brown, and Bang's updated book, which he will talk about 6:30 p.m. July 11 at the Avid Reader in Davis. On today's Davisville we learn more about the music, new stories Bang heard while updating his book, and the baffling review Guaraldi received from the California Aggie the last time he played in Davis.

Christmas Time Is Here, Friends Theme или Linus and Lucy, я вспоминаю, насколько музыка Гуаральди сформировала то, кем я являюсь сегодня, - говорит автор. Vince Guaraldi scholar Derrick Bang wrote the liner notes for the 2022 Super Deluxe edition of the soundtrack for A Charlie Brown Christmas, and this week he talks about the 1965 cartoon, Guaraldi, and the soundtrack album sessions included in the digital and CD packages.  The digital version is out now and up on streaming platforms, and it includes the original 1965 mix, a new mix, and all of the sessions that have been found so far. The CD version also includes a Blu-Ray disc with the animated special, and it's due out December 2. The two-record vinyl version includes the album's original mix and a record with highlights from the sessions.  I've talked about Guaraldi and A Charlie Brown Christmas on 12 Songs with Steven Drozd of The Flaming Lips, Kristin Chenoweth, George Winston, and The Ornaments, and I wrote about Guaraldi's impact last year for The New Orleans Advocate.  If you want to read more by Bang, you find his film writing at his Blogspot.

MUSIC is not a GENRE

SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE Back when walking around indoors amongst strangers didn't cause massive physical anxiety, I used to take every chance I got to pop into a thrift store and see if it had any interesting vinyl. The truth is ANY vinyl you find in a thrift store is interesting. It's something someone else owned and listened to, that for whatever reason they're now sharing with someone new. The randomness of thrift store vinyl makes it interesting by default, whether what you find is well-known, a kind of obscure gem, or completely unknown on every level. Which describes this week's three albums. I found all of these in thrift stores, and bought each of them for different reasons. The Beatles I got because despite having every Beatles song on cassettes & CDs & digital/streaming formats, I've never owned an actual Beatles album. I have a 45 of theirs and that's it. Plus I knew this particular album's look from my dad having owned originals of all their American albums, and the one I found didn't look like it. It's the film soundtrack version. Not obscure by any means, but cool to find and have. Artie Shaw was my first big band love when I was a wee lad, mainly because I've always loved the clarinet. And again, I never owned him on vinyl. Finding this big bright package of an album was like the universe saying, “We know.” These days, someone like Artie Shaw is kind of obscure, so this was a nice find. And it's a damn good collection! Then there's the famous (?) Eddie Heywood. I'd honestly never heard of him. It was the complete unknown of this album, coupled with the title & Bob Ross–Yacht Rock mashup cover art, that compelled me to get this. I figured I'd never ever run across this album again. It makes me wish there was more blatant cheese in pop music. And it doesn't disappoint. It's that certain kind of swingin' 1950s late-but-not-too-late in the evening lounge jazz, smothered with super sugary strings, and with just enough quality and flourish to rise above Mantovani, yet not quite enough to match Guaraldi or Esquivel. All the music was composed or cowritten by Heywood, who worked with big names like Benny Carter & Billie Holiday, and he even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Who knew? Just to bring it around to something super mega connected, my brain told me that well-known-kind-of-obscure-unknown is a perfect description of how I like to create music. I almost always take some well-known phrases/chord progressions/rhythms, mix them with kind of obscure words & sounds & arrangements, and throw in some completely unknown elements that are unique to me – manipulated sounds or lyrical phrasings that come straight from the weird way my mind mashes words together. OR I do the opposite of all those things. Either way, what comes out is an amalgam that sounds familiar, feels connected, and is totally its own thing. These two songs are perfect examples. The first combines hooky melodies & rhythms with more obscure lyrics and flat out weird backing vocals. The second combines hooky synths & rhythms with more obscure lyrics and at least three tracks of actual “found sound”: REC - “Make Me Mic My Mouth” (from the album Syzygy for the Weird) REC - “The Power of Repetition (Everlasting)” (from the album Syncopy for the Weird) Do you have any connection with any of these artists? Do you like stumbling across music you never thought you'd find or buy? Don't you think thrift stores are awesome on like every level? Vince Guaraldi’s soundtrack for "A Charlie Brown Christmas" was perfect for the animation of the Peanuts comics. It’s not just jazz, it’s what Charlie Brown sounds like. It’s what Christmas sounds like. And it perfectly encapsulates that melancholic feeling that comes around this time each year. In this episode, we'll talk about how jazz came to define the Peanuts sound, depression and anxiety as tackled by Charlie Brown, and the little Christmas tree that could.

My guest today is an example of someone who was born in the right place at the right time. He was raised in San Francisco and during his formative years when arguably the greatest music cultivation was occurring. The core group of Brubeck, Desmond and Tjader and Guaraldi spawned a new era in melodic jazz, never removing the street element but conjoining swing elements with Latin rhythms, bossa rhythms and African percussion. At the same time Santana's Latin rock escapade was burgeoning as well as a bunch of Mavericks who were acclimating themselves to this fertile hotbed of cross music fertilization. My guest got sticks in his hand and became part of it all. We just published our massive and overstuffed Year in Review feature, and to celebrate, members of the AD crew —including your hosts, Justin Gage and Jason P. Woodbury, plus Tyler Wilcox and Marty Sartini Garner, to discuss the year in music. Touched on: some of our favorite albums, essential reissues and archival sets, and what music the AD team is planning on spending time with in the new year. Then, Aquarium Drunkard veteran Joe Crosby cozies up by the proverbial hearth to discuss A Charlie Brown Christmas, a 1965 special based on Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts characters. Featuring the music of the Vince Guaraldi Trio, it’s not only a hallmark of the season, but a truly radical exploration of spiritual authenticity. In a world of cheap glitz, it remains a work of genuine, heartfelt art.

Nothing takes the edge off the holidays quite like the soundtrack to “A Charlie Brown Christmas” by Vince Guaraldi. The jazz musician and composer always wanted to write a standard. And since the “Peanuts” holiday special first aired in 1965, its score has become one of the most recognizable jazz recordings of all time. In 2012 “A Charlie Brown Christmas” was chosen for preservation in the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. Its story is told by Jean Schulz, the widow of “Peanuts” creator, Charles M. Schulz; Jerry Granelli, the drummer who played with Guaraldi; and Lee Mendelson, the producer who worked closely with Schulz on the Christmas special. On this episode, we’ve improvised a sampling of jazz hits that used to be an important part of the playlists of rock and roll radio stations. Prior to the mid-1970s, top 40 formats often included a wider spectrum of music than they do now. Back then you could hear rockabilly, easy listening, country, rhythm and blues, pop, Broadway show tunes, and jazz on the same station. That was long before radio, satellite, and Internet streaming rock music stations splintered into more narrowly focused formats such as hard rock, soft rock, classic rock, oldies, album oriented rock, urban contemporary, and so on. Many of the jazz hits played on top 40 radio stations were cover versions of then-current rock songs, and then there were rock and pop hits that were cover versions of jazz originals. And we’ll cover some of them, too. So, stay tuned for all that jazz. We’ll hit the high notes here.

Sorry for the long time between episodes, but in the interim, I became a father. In Vince Guaraldi at the Piano (McFarland Press, 2012),Derrick Bang chronicles San Francisco jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi’s sojourns into the world of jazz from the late 1940s to his untimely death in 1976. Guaraldi, known to most world-wide as the composer and pianist behind the Peanuts’ animated television specials featuring Charlie Brown and Snoopy, also played in Woody Herman’s “Third Herd” big band; composed and recorded a revolutionary Jazz Mass which he performed live in San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral in 1965; participated in some magical and memorable live and recorded collaborations with Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete; and was a fixture in the bossa nova Latin jazz San Francisco club scene in the 1950s and 1960s. His “Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus,” based on the soundtrack to the Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Film in 1960, introduced countless people to jazz and the sensuous sounds of bossa nova. His single on the same album, “Cast Your Fate to the Wind,” won a Grammy for Best Original Jazz Composition in 1963 and was a successful cross-over song cover on the US Billboard pop chart. Though Vince Guaraldi died in 1976 at the age of only 47, his legacy was revived decades later by David Benoit and George Winston, both of whom recorded covers of his songs. Bang is circumspect about much of Guaraldi’s personal life and he qualifies up front that his book isn’t a traditional biography. Nonetheless, one gets a great feel for the varied and large body of work of this San Francisco-born musician who carved out a unique and enduring niche in the jazz world. Guaraldi had a wonderful sense of rhythm, and his improvisations were almost always melodic. He could swing and play anything from boogie-woogie to bossa nova but will perhaps most be remembered as a joyful player with a sense of playfulness and uplift. You feel good when you hear Vince Guaraldi’s music. With an extensive discography, filmography, and also a large collection of statements and observations by Guaraldi’s peers about his playing, his distinctive handlebar-mustachioed look, and his entertaining persona at the piano, Bang’s book, which represents a lifetime of listening and appreciation and more than four years of extensive research, is a rich and needed testimony to Guaraldi’s musical legacy.
