Innovation is alive and well in STEM classrooms across Washington state, inspiring students to seek opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math. At the GeekWire Awards on May 12, we're celebrating the accomplishments of three STEM Educator of the Year honorees who are excelling in their jobs by embracing creative, rule-breaking teaching strategies in their classrooms. These educators are eschewing traditional grading structures, putting students in charge of teaching lessons and empowering them with real-life, project-based learning. We recently sat down to chat with our honorees along with DreamBox Learning CEO and President Jessie Woolley-Wilson to learn more about their efforts to breakdown traditional barriers. DreamBox is the sponsor of this award, now in its second year. The STEM Educator of the Year honorees are: Johanna Brown, a teacher at Pullman High School who brought Advanced Placement chemistry and computer science to her Eastern Washington high school, led their Science Bowl team to championships and embraces a "gradeless" classroom. Devina Khan, a computer science and information technology instructional designer at the West Valley Innovation Center who partnered with an international program to connect female students with STEM professionals, coached students to earn tech certifications and helped kids share their tech expertise with the broader community in ag-focused Yakima County. Stephanie Winslow, a teacher at South Kitsap High School who was one of the first STEM-certified career and technical educators in Washington and teaches AP environmental science, astronomy and earth science classes. She is also an advisor for STEM Club. The GeekWire Awards recognize the top innovators and companies in Pacific Northwest technology. The brilliant astrophysicist and master teacher HAKEEM OLUSEYI takes us into one of the most astounding IF's we have ever experienced. In a tour de force of imagination, Dr. Oluseyi helps us appreciate the unimaginably titanic scale of the Universe by asking us to imagine being unimaginably microscopic and instead of looking out at the Milky Way galaxy... these astronomers are inside... YOU! This is a fantastic voyage that takes you from the size of the electron, to the stars, to the scale of the universe and... beyond. Don't forget to take a breath and soak it all in, you won't forget this show. Dr. Oluseyi is an Astrophysicist, STEM Educator, Author, Speaker, Science Communicator, and Veteran. His memoir "A Quantum Life: My Unlikely Journey From The Streets To The Stars" has just been published, to great acclaim, and is available wherever books are sold. More info at https://sites.prh.com/a-quantum-life About the book: In this inspiring coming-of-age memoir, a world-renowned astrophysicist emerges from an impoverished childhood and crime-filled adolescence to ascend through the top ranks of research physics. Navigating poverty, violence, and instability, a young James Plummer had two guiding stars—a genius IQ and a love of science. But a bookish nerd is a soft target, and James faced years of bullying and abuse. As he struggled to survive his childhood in some of the country's toughest urban neighborhoods in New Orleans, Houston, and LA, and later in the equally poor backwoods of Mississippi, he adopted the persona of “gangsta nerd”—dealing weed in juke joints while winning state science fairs with computer programs that model Einstein's theory of relativity. Once admitted to the elite physics PhD program at Stanford University, James found himself pulled between the promise of a bright future and a dangerous crack cocaine habit he developed in college. With the encouragement of his mentor and the sole Black professor in the physics department, James confronted his personal demons as well as the entrenched racism and classism of the scientific establishment. When he finally seized his dream of a life in astrophysics, he adopted a new name, Hakeem Muata Oluseyi, to honor his African ancestors. Alternately heartbreaking and hopeful, A Quantum Life narrates one man's remarkable quest across an ever-expanding universe filled with entanglement and choice. --- Got an IF of your own? This week on TradeSecrets by: Tripletote I interviewed Dr. Stacey Williams. Stacey is a STEM Educator who has worked teaching kids for almost 20 years. Stacey has made it her mission to focus on teaching minority students the importance of learning math, science, engineering, arts, and medicine. She emphasizes that these are the job fields of the future and many times they are the highest paying jobs also. She talks about how she “accidentally” stumbled into the idea of being a STEM educator and how she was discouraged by some who thought it was too hard of a field for an African American Woman. She overcame that. In her spare time, Stacey runs a peer group for teachers where they share best practices, resources, and experiences to help each other become more effective educators. Stacey has experience teaching students in New York City, Atlanta, GA, and the Greater Hartford Area so she has a wealth of knowledge on connecting and reaching inner-city students. Our future workforce requires the skills STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education provides. Women and minorities have historically been underrepresented in these fields. Although schools are working to incorporate STEM curriculum, what can we as parents do to foster an appreciation for STEM in our children's everyday lives and expose them to possible careers? In this episode I sat down with Dr. Mary Payton, who is a retired Army Chemical Officer, STEM Educator, author, and host of the radio show "All About STEM" I was also joined by STEM teacher from Mansfield ISD, Gregory Conely. Hello hello my Courgemaker family! I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I am to share with you today's episode - it seriously gives me LIFE! This week I'm talking with Wellbotics founder Dr. Pam Davis. Wellbotics delivers pop up makerspaces to cancer care communities and other safe spaces, using instructional robots to leverage Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math, and Mindfulness to increase problem-solving skills, communication, and cooperation amongst children facing family trauma. Since her first seizure at ten years old Pam has spent a lifetime thinking “with and about [her] brain.” That interest expanded to include interests in Mindfulness, Neuroscience, and Artificial Intelligence. With a passion for academic research Pam earned her doctorate degree in Instructional Media and Technology from Columbia University and in 2016 Pam combined her interests, passion and profound gratitude to those who helped her in her own battle with breast cancer by developing and offering Wellbotics to children and families dealing with the troubling times that often accompany a family cancer diagnosis. Pam loves kids and building robot so her time is spent using one to help another. Pam resides in New York City area as a workshop leader, public speaker and a STEM Educator. In this week's episode, Pam shares her experiences of growing up as a child with epilepsy, being diagnosed with cancer at 47 and the story behind Wellbotics. She shares how Wellbotics was a response to Pam's battle with breast cancer and how it changed her life and the lives of others in some unexpectedly positive ways. There are so many wonderful moments in this episode that I don't even know where to begin! We have a great conversation about reframing bitterness and Pam's passion for sustainable positivity, confidence, the parallels between robotics and life - which is fascinating - and Pam's notion which I love, of ‘once-upon-a-time strangers'. Pam's passion is utterly contagious and my heart felt so full after this conversation and I am couldn't be more excited to be sharing it with you today. If you need a boost, if you're wondering if it's possible to combine your interests into a fulfilling career or if you simply want to spend time in the company of one hell of an inspiring woman, you are going to love this conversation. On this episode, we’re talking to Canissa Grant, a science educator based in Avon, Connecticut. With experience as both a private and public school teacher, she shed a light on some of the disparities in curriculum and expectations. She also calls for a heightened sense of transparency and inclusivity in STEM classes, especially for students with disabilities. Teaching through a social justice lens, she aims to give her students a well-rounded and transformative learning experience. Canissa also tells us some of her struggles as a black woman in an all-boys high school and why that makes self-care all the more important. In these situations, it is likely that teachers of color experience burnout at much higher rates because they are expected to share their expertise on racial issues at the drop of a hat. But to Canissa, going the extra mile to build a sense of familiarity and community in her classes is always worth it. Although Canissa’s not a huge fan of social media, you can buy her biology and chemistry lesson plans and resources on teacherspayteachers.com on her store, Ninth Grade Shenanigans! As always, you can find this episode and much more on our Twitter and Instagram at @SelfCareSundays and on Facebook at @SelfCareSundaysPodcast.
