Lasting, revolutionary, disruptive change increasingly requires getting SUPER creative about financial strategy, business and legal structures, and values alignment in this day and age, where as a society we face massive challenges to individual's rights, opportunities, and freedoms. Social entrepreneurs with big visions like our guest in this episode, So Good Pupusas and Pupusas for Education Founder Cecilia Polanco, don't allow themselves to be put in a box. Instead of being restricted by the limitations of existing paths and models for social change, they create NEW ONES. They leverage what's available to create structures that allow for innovation and transformational change. In this episode, listen to Cecilia's story of how she has followed her life experiences and purpose to create self-sustaining educational scholarships and jobs for her community, leveraging BOTH for-profit business and non-profit organizational models. Learn more about Cecilia's work: So Good Pupusas - http://www.sogoodpupusas.com Pupusas 4 Education: https://www.pupusas4education.com Cecilia S. Polanco is a local Durham community organizer and proud graduate of Durham Public Schools who believes #TheRevolutionWillBeWellFed. She is a daughter of the Salvadoran diaspora and indigenous peoples of El Salvador, a long time Durham resident, and local small business owner of So Good Pupusas social justice food truck, and founder of Pupusas for Education non profit community organization. She works in the fields of mental health advocacy, food and environmental justice, economic community development, youth development and organizing, and more just philanthropic and nonprofit systems. She values racial equity and anti-racism, intersectionality, the path from DEI to liberatory systems, building bridges of solidarity, freedom dreaming around decolonized strategies and systems, radical joy and celebration, and a visionary for a healing path forward together. As a facilitator she believes in co-creating brave spaces to grapple with both having experiences and being agents of harm, channeling our inner child in our work, and slowing down to prioritize connection, relationship, and heart centered work.

New data suggests social distancing measures are working to curb the spread of coronavirus – but experts insist now is no time to let up. In this episode: > Today, a team of local health experts said that hospitals across North Carolina are likely to be overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients if the state stops practicing aggressive social distancing policies. However, that scenario is far less likely if the state maintains those policies beyond the end of April, when Gov. Roy Cooper's 30-day stay-at-home order is set to expire. > To stop the spread of coronavirus, the North Carolina Division of Prisons will not accept offenders from county jails and will dramatically reduce the transfers of inmates within state prisons for two weeks, beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. > Today is the last day Durham Public Schools will distribute meals to needy students. Although many families depend on the meals, school officials say they had to shut it down after an employee who was distributing food and instructional materials at Bethesda Elementary School tested positive for the coronavirus. > Starting today, Wake County families living in hotels may be eligible for new financial assistance to pay for housing. Wake Prevent, a program started last year by Wake County’s Housing and Community Revitalization Department, currently helps about 100 households a month cover the cost of housing. Recently, the pandemic has increased the need for housing assistance, especially for those living in hotels.
In this episode, we talk to Dr. Nakia Hardy, Deputy Superintendent of Durham Public Schools on how leaders can build a culture focused on inclusion and impact.
The unlikely friendship of black community activist Ann Atwater and C.P. Ellis, the Exalted Grand Cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan, brought together to co-chair a series of meetings about the desegregation of Durham Public Schools in 1971, seems extraordinary. And it must have seemed that way also to writer Osha Gray Davidson who documented Ann and CPs story in his book THE BEST OF ENEMIES: RACE AND REDEMPTION IN THE NEW SOUTH published by The University of North Carolina Press. Davidson’s book inspired the movie and a play written by Mark St. Germain. Davidson was in Durham to see the https://www.nccu.edu/news/index.cfm?ID=7BA8409D-B0F1-1EF1-5039730D5B7BAAE0 (North Carolina Central University Theatre) production of the play. It was his first time seeing it live and said the fact that he got to see it in Durham, just over a mile north from where the community meetings to desegregate Durham’s Public School took place. He called the experience pretty mind-blowing. “I miss Ann and C.P.,” he told the cast in a talkback afterward. “So, seeing them together was emotional because they’re real people to me.” Davidson’s book https://books.apple.com/us/book/the-best-of-enemies/id1245739291?mt=11&app=itunes&at=1001lRry (The Best of Enemies) is available from https://books.apple.com/us/book/the-best-of-enemies/id1245739291?mt=11&app=itunes&at=1001lRry (Apple Books) or Amazon. About the Guests Osha Gray Davidson is an award-winning author, freelance writer, and photographer. He has written six books of non-fiction, including “The Best of Enemies” which was a finalist for the NYPL’s Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism. The film adaptation of “Best of Enemies” starring Sam Rockwell and Taraji Henson was released in April of 2019. Davidson’s work has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, National Geographic, Mother Jones, and Rolling Stone. Ruby Christmas is a Durham native who says she knew Ann Atwater and worked with her on several boards in Durham including, Operation Breakthrough, Head Start, and the Sickle Cell Foundation. She attended one of the first community meetings in Durham about desegregating Durham Public Schools in 1971.
