Innovation is alive and well in STEM classrooms across Washington state, inspiring students to seek opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math. At the GeekWire Awards on May 12, we're celebrating the accomplishments of three STEM Educator of the Year honorees who are excelling in their jobs by embracing creative, rule-breaking teaching strategies in their classrooms. These educators are eschewing traditional grading structures, putting students in charge of teaching lessons and empowering them with real-life, project-based learning. We recently sat down to chat with our honorees along with DreamBox Learning CEO and President Jessie Woolley-Wilson to learn more about their efforts to breakdown traditional barriers. DreamBox is the sponsor of this award, now in its second year. The STEM Educator of the Year honorees are: Johanna Brown, a teacher at Pullman High School who brought Advanced Placement chemistry and computer science to her Eastern Washington high school, led their Science Bowl team to championships and embraces a "gradeless" classroom. Devina Khan, a computer science and information technology instructional designer at the West Valley Innovation Center who partnered with an international program to connect female students with STEM professionals, coached students to earn tech certifications and helped kids share their tech expertise with the broader community in ag-focused Yakima County. Stephanie Winslow, a teacher at South Kitsap High School who was one of the first STEM-certified career and technical educators in Washington and teaches AP environmental science, astronomy and earth science classes. She is also an advisor for STEM Club. The GeekWire Awards recognize the top innovators and companies in Pacific Northwest technology. Our STEM educator honorees and other award finalists were selected based on community nominations, along with input from GeekWire Awards judges. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Teaching Skills that Prepare You for Ed Tech Success  Teachers looking to transition from the classroom to a position with an ed-tech company sometimes worry about whether they are qualified to make such a big career change. The reality, however, is that #teacherjobs are excellent preparation for ed-tech employment. Your time in the classroom has given you numerous skills that will make you an effective member of the ed-tech field.  Empathy Empathy is central to the teaching experience. As an educator, you do not just help students to develop their intellects. You also help them to develop emotional intelligence, and that means teaching them to understand and model empathy.  Great teachers TEACH empathy to their students in a multitude of ways. Every time you explore a character's feelings in a story, help a student navigate a conflict with a friend, or show your class how to care for their community or their world, you are helping them to use empathy to connect with those around them.  Great teachers also USE empathy themselves as they build relationships with students, parents, colleagues, administrators, and other educators.  When it comes time to transition to the ed-tech world, particularly in the fields of sales, customer support, and customer success, empathy plays a central role.  Research shows, for example, that empathy is one of the most important leadership skills. Empathetic leaders foster greater innovation, engagement, and inclusivity within their environments. You can use your skills in teaching and using empathy to create strong teams and effective communication within your ed-tech corporation. In addition, the school districts and educators with whom you will interact in your new role need more than just facts about the technology options available to them. They need someone who will listen to and care about their needs and who will find ways to support student learning and growth. Your skills in using empathy can help you to build trusting, effective relationships with them as you seek to meet their ed-tech needs.  Documentation Documentation can seem all-consuming in the field of education. A Facebook post that circulated when I was teaching said, "Teaching is at the point that if a student passes gas in class, we have to document it."  While the post was a bit sarcastic, there was some truth to it. A decade later, the need for documentation is even higher. IEPS. Behavior improvement plans. School lunch lists. COVID contact lists. Teachers spend many hours meticulously documenting student progress and behaviors.  When you are ready to transition from the classroom to #edtechcareers, those documentation skills will be a highly valuable skill in any role you take on. From engineers who need to write a postmortem to a customer success manager who needs to document a success story for a case study, to a recruiter who needs to document the outcomes of an interview, great documentation skills are essential.  Organization Most of us remember that one teacher who struggled with organization  - Late test grading, messy classroom, etc. However, most teachers are extremely organized because they have to be. Thoughtful, intentional organization keeps their lives at school less stressful and equips them to teach more effectively.  You can take those same organizational skills and use them to succeed at an ed-tech company. For example, in my first ed tech position, I used my organizational skills to build a tracking system to manage the company's book of renewals and expansions. The system caught the attention of my CEO, who told me at my year-end review that  “I didn't know you had this operational side to you!”  As a teacher looking to move into ed-tech, you too can leverage those organizational skills as the valuable contributions they are to the ed-tech field. And, you can market those skills at the beginning of the application process, rather than waiting until you are in the role to let your operational skills shine!  Differentiation In my opinion, one of the biggest shifts in education over the last 20 years is the practice of differentiating instruction for students. Back in the 80s and 90s when I was a student, education was a one-size-fits-all approach. Every student received instruction in the same way.  When I became a teacher, however, we began learning the importance of tailoring the curriculum to match students' learning styles. Today, teachers are expected to provide an education that meets students' unique learning needs.  As a result, teachers understand the importance of differentiation to student success, and they understand how to implement it in their everyday approach. You are probably very comfortable with using tools and strategies to make a curriculum an effective teaching tool for all of your students.  Differentiation is also at the core of ed-tech curriculum today. Tools such as eSpark Learning, iXL, DreamBox, LearnZillion, NewsELA and ThinkCerca use technology to make differentiation easier and more effective within the classroom.  As an ed-tech employee, particularly in the customer support field, differentiation is also key. We all know the constant conversation that goes on behind doors about customer segmentation and services. Teachers are not only great at understanding the concept that some customers deserve higher-touch care than others, but they can also deliver on it without the urge to over serve the lower-touch customer. The former teachers on my customer service teams were the BEST at executing based on customer segmentation plans. Patience Patience may not be a skill you think to put on your resume, but it is a valuable tool that you can take from education to ed-tech. Those classrooms of busy children that you manage every day have given you a level of patience you would never have been able to imagine before you started teaching.  You have also learned how to read students (and sometimes parents) in order to determine when to push them toward positive change and growth and when to wait patiently in order to optimize their chances for success in the classroom.  That balance is essential in #edtechjobs, particularly in the sales and customer support fields. You need to know when to stretch the thinking of a school district and push them toward a certain solution, but you also need to know when to be patient and wait for a better time.  In addition, you will need patience when dealing with people inside and outside your organization. You are working with human beings, whether they are from the product team, instructional design, engineering, or another department, and successful interactions with others, as you know, often requires patience.  As an educator, you already have many of the skills you need to succeed at an ed-tech company. If you are ready to begin the journey to an ed-tech position, Classroom to Boardroom here at educators 2 educators can help.  In addition to teaching you how to recognize, and promote the critical skills you have, we also offer lots of online content, a #teachercareercoach, connections with others, and more. How do you tackle COVID response, the misnomer that is “learning loss,” artificial intelligence, digital platforms and pedagogy, plus Rodney Dangerfield in 25 minutes? In this episode of EdTech Today, Dreambox Learning CEO Jessie Woolley-Wilson addresses all of that and more.DreamBox Learning, the K-8 digital math company that pioneered Intelligent Adaptive Learning™ technology, recently announced new features that will help educators address the challenges they face connecting with students during virtual learning, while also providing ways to deepen engagement with students returning to in-person instruction during the 2020-21 school year. DreamBox's new features were specifically designed to support the variety of learning environments being implemented across the country in the wake of COVID-19—including in-person, all virtual and hybrid models— and focus on meeting students' social-emotional needs while also measuring and ensuring student growth.DreamBox's new capabilities address the most critical learning needs expressed by educators at the moment and provide the tools needed to keep students engaged and motivated to learn. The updates include an embedded direct messaging feature that gives teachers a tool to directly communicate with and encourage students within DreamBox, and also provides students with a simple way to ask questions privately to their teacher. In addition, brand new reports provide educators with a better understanding of their students' daily activity, ongoing growth, and math competency, and new, innovative DreamBox lessons help to improve student understanding of key concepts.“We've heard directly from teachers about the critical need for tools to better connect and engage with their students during remote and hybrid learning,” said Tim Hudson, PhD, Chief Learning Officer of DreamBox Learning. “DreamBox has always been built by teachers for teachers, which is why our new teacher-student messaging feature, interactive word problem lessons, and virtual manipulatives for 2D and 3D geometry topics will help teachers stay connected to students while helping improve their learning. Now more than ever, our goal is to support teachers with resources and tools that meet their needs regardless of the learning environment they're returning to this fall.”New DreamBox features released today help teachers and students with:Meeting Students' Social-Emotional Needs: During school closures, teacher and student communication is even more vital to engage and support students. To foster this important connection and build math confidence, DreamBox now offers an embedded messaging tool for teachers to send custom notes or pre-written messages of encouragement to an individual student or an entire class. Students can use emojis to respond to their teacher's notes or initiate their own conversation with teachers by choosing from pre-written messages such as, “I need more time to be successful at this,” and, “I'm feeling pretty good about this.” Students who use DreamBox in Spanish will automatically see all messages in Spanish, and students with reading difficulties can hear these messages read aloud. This new capability makes it possible for teachers to attend to each student's social and emotional learning needs outside of the classroom while fostering critical thinking, differentiation, and confidence in math.Quick Insights into Student Usage and Growth: This school year, whether they are providing in-person or virtual instruction, a teacher's time is more valuable than ever. DreamBox's updated Insights Dashboard and new reporting help teachers quickly get the insights they need most about daily student usage and growth over time. The new Student Usage Report gives educators clear, daily insights into student activity and learning time in a remote setting while also monitoring math learning progress. District and school administrators will also have access to DreamBox's new Growth Report to clearly see how students using DreamBox are growing in terms of externally calibrated grade level benchmarks. In line with the findings from independent efficacy studies, students completing at least five DreamBox lessons per week grow an average of 1.5 grade levels during a single school year, regardless of whether they start below, at, or above grade level.Math Lessons that Promote Critical Thinking: DreamBox's new and innovative lessons support student understanding of math concepts and build critical thinking skills in ways that no other math software program can. Using a new interactive word problems tool, students have a powerful way to engage in mathematical processes and practices in order to connect words and symbols to equations. DreamBox has also developed a new set of manipulatives and games to build student understanding of perimeter, area, and volume. DreamBox's lessons support sense-making and strong mathematical reasoning by connecting students with these key geometric concepts in ways that can only be achieved in a digital environment.“Partnering with DreamBox helped make remote learning possible in the spring and provided our school with a full view of our students' math learning competency. These new tools will be necessary for continuing in our efforts to address attendance and each student's learning needs,” said Kim Dougherty, a teacher at Crow Creek Tribal School. “After trying the new student-teacher messaging with a few of my own students, I am looking forward to being able to share feedback and motivate students that are struggling within a particular lesson or concept this new school year. The new messaging feature will help me reach out to my students when they are frustrated and encourage them to take on new math concepts together!”Other DreamBox Features Supporting Learning Guardians and StudentsThese new features are just the latest capabilities DreamBox has introduced to help all learning guardians navigate this new school year. Earlier this year, DreamBox accelerated the release of DreamBox Predictive Insights in response to the cancellation of state tests due to COVID-19. As the only elementary digital math program that can predict how students would have performed on state standardized tests without the need for additional testing, DreamBox provides district administrators and educators with important insights into student learning after just a few weeks of using DreamBox.In support of parents and guardians, DreamBox is continuing to offer access to DreamBox's Parent Dashboard for parents and guardians of students with school accounts to create closer connections between home and school. Whether their school decides to continue with online learning or resumes school in-person, parents and guardians can view reports and data about their child's DreamBox use, learning growth, and achievement milestones.DreamBox is used by five million students and 200,000 educators in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico. Through its Intelligent Adaptive Learning technology, DreamBox personalizes the learning experience for students by adapting to students' learning both within and between math lessons, offering students the right lesson at the right time in both English and Spanish.DreamBox continues to introduce new features and capabilities to provide a proven-effective, personalized learning experience serving the unique needs of all students and learning guardians. Independent research conducted by Harvard's Center for Education Policy Research shows that students who use DreamBox for just one hour a week improve their math scores by nearly 60% more than expected growth norms on benchmark and state tests. DreamBox is also the only elementary online math program with the highest rating of “Strong” from Johns Hopkins' EvidenceforESSA.org. To learn more about DreamBox, visit https://www.dreambox.com/.

Wouldn't it be great if you could instantly learn from your mistakes? While that might be difficult for humans to do, it's the foundation of DreamBox Learning's adaptive learning software which analyzes student errors in real time and instantly offers up opportunities to learn and succeed. But CEO Jessie Woolley-Wilson is quick to point out the system is intended to be a complement to live instruction, not a substitute for it. As her company learned over the last several months, it can also be a big help to parents who suddenly find themselves teaching their quarantined kids. Now the challenge is to make sure all kids have internet access as it becomes clear many schools will remain closed indefinitely.

Show Notes Let's all take a few nice, long, deep breaths. Hi Friends, We'll be needing a lot more deep breathing in these coming weeks! This week's episode is a recording of a live webinar Sara Kuljis & I did earlier this week. Our topic was Creating Structure, Fun, & Connection while we have our kids home and have a whole lot of unstructured time on our hands. Participants shared many amazing resources, which I have included in this post (scroll down). If you'd prefer a downloadable PDF (with links), use the sign up box below. While this is a challenging time, we can also view it as an opportunity to evaluate and doing a reset - adding in some fun and connection to our family lives. Please send me your challenges, questions, and feedback. I'd love to connect! Stay well! Big Ideas Connection is weaved through everything we do. Try weaving some connection into the structure of your day - a walk with the dog, family dinner, or a nightly game or puzzle are all great options! STRUCTURE The schedule at home will not be the same as at school, and that's okay. But it's good for there to be some predictability. For kids who have synchronous classes, their schedule will be dictated by their online classes. For younger kids, or those who do not have scheduled online classes, consider having guidelines about getting school work done before other activities or in the morning. Instead of following a rigid schedule, consider using a "Daily Checklist." This allows kids (and parents) some autonomy to choose when to do different things. We're all feeling a lack of control right now, so giving our kids some choices (when possible) is helpful. Audrey's daughter, Gretchen, created a checklist for her high school students that works well for adults, too. It incorporates not just the school work, but the other things that will make us feel emotionally and physically healthy. Read more and download Gretchen’s checklist for her high school students (that also works for adults)! REMEMBER THE "ESSENTIALS" I talked with Dr. Jess Shatkin about the "Triumvirate of Good Health" (Sleep, Exercise, Nutrition) in Episode 24. Now's a good opportunity to look at how we (and our kids) are doing in those important areas! It's also important to attend to your kids' emotional needs during this unsettled time, listening and empathizing with them over their losses and frustrations, some of which may seem trivial from an adult perspective. Rather than discounting their feelings, we need to validate their emotions and show empathy. I made this one-minute video about validating kids' feelings a few years ago. It seems especially applicable right now. This is also an excellent opportunity to make sure your family has enough of each of what Challenge Success calls "PDF": Playtime, Downtime, & Family Time. These are common-sense strategies to promote health and well-being. Download Challenge Success PDF for Elementary-Age Kids Download Challenge Success PDF for Teens CONNECTION & FUN Try having at least one meal together. If you haven't been able to have family dinner, try starting now! And let the kids cook or help you cook! Do some sort of family sharing. If your family has a faith tradition, consider watching a live-stream of the service or listening to a podcast together. Exercise together! Get outside if you can to walk, hike, run, or bike. If you have a ping pong table, basketball hoop, or trampoline, take advantage of those resources. Or, stream a fitness or dance video to do together. It could be good for a laugh trying to attempt some new dance or yoga moves! Cultivate gratitude during these stressful times. With your family, name people, things, experiences and opportunities you are grateful for. Gratitude builds hope, stamina and a kind of “emotional immunity," and helps us feel less alone. Model how to keep moving forward for our children. Read together. Consider doing a family read aloud of one of your favorite books. Come up with a hobby or new activity you can try together, either in pairs or as a whole family. Pull out some games or puzzles. Learn a new card game to play together. Resources Shared by Webinar Participants, Audrey, & Sara What are things we can do together as a family? My son is 12 and really misses playing with his friends. We take our whole family (son 12, daughter 8) and throw and catch a football on the beach. We only last a half hour or so, but they love it. Also we bike a lot and that is great with social distancing. We are doing a lot of reading aloud. Right now my kids are LOVING the book "Ungifted". It makes us laugh a lot. Went for a walk and did physical distancing with my 23 year old niece yesterday to connect with her. Books - it is nice to step away and get into a story. Reading out loud with kids while they work on puzzles/legos. There are several restaurants in my town that are offering pick up. I’m taking my daughter a few times a week to pick up her favorite lunch and walk to the beach to eat. If you have access to fleece via amazon or elsewhere kids can make fleece blankets for a group called Project Linus. They are easy to make and fun to do while chatting or listening to music
. Beetles Project - resources usually for outdoor educators, but in these times, perhaps for families, too Coursera classes are often free and wonderful. My daughters and I did a Yale course on the science of well being and I highly recommend it. For families of the Christian faith, I think this is a great time for family bible studies or book clubs, too. We've started asking our kids to research something and bring fun facts to dinner to share with all of us. Funnily, our son thought I asked him to bring facts about Candyland instead of Canyonlands, a place we want to visit, so last night we got a great laugh over the miscommunication! 20 Screen Free Things to do with Your Kids Indoors Watch a TV series together Take a virtual trip to a museum Another virtual museum list (Travel & Leisure) Soul Shoppe Teach Peacemaking at Home – Dara Ackerman who works at our camps is involved! Free every day for the next two weeks each mid-day. What resources are you finding helpful to take care of yourself? We've been doing that for the past 3 years, so nice to already have established. What are academic/educational opportunities? Today a future without schools. Instead of gathering students into a room and teaching them, everybody learns on their own time, on tablets and guided by artificial intelligence.    First, I talk to a Ashok Goel, a computer scientist who developed an artificially intelligent TA named Jill Watson and didn’t tell any of his students she wasn’t a human.     Then I talk to two people building future, app based educational systems. Jessie Woolley-Wilson from DreamBox explains what adaptive learning is, and how it can help create a better learning experience for kids. She also talks about all the data they collect on kids to better serve them (data we’ll come back to later in the episode.) Along with Jessie, Julia Stiglitz from Coursera explains how this kind of self-directed learning can extend into the college and post-college world.     Jessie and Julia see a future with these kinds of learning apps that could be more democratic, more creative, more fun and more effective. But there are some downsides too. Neither of them see apps or algorithms replacing teachers, but there are other organizations and projects that do.     In 2013, a guy named Sugata Mitra won the TED Prize which comes with a pretty healthy million dollar check. He won this prize for his work on what he calls “A school in the cloud.” Mitra founded this organization named Hole in the Wall, where he went around the slums of India and installed these kiosks that children could use and play with. His whole thesis is that students can be taught by computers, on their own time. Without teachers. Here’s his TED talk.    And this Hole in the Wall thing is one of the classic examples that a lot of people working on education apps point to to show that kids don’t need teachers to learn. Kids are naturally curious, they’re going to want to seek out information, you don’t have to force them into a tiny room to listen to a boring teacher.    But we talk to some people who question that narrative. Audrey Watters, who runs the site Hack Education, says that projects like Hole in the Wall often don’t last. Nearly all the kiosks that Mitra set up are abandoned and vandalized, she says, and when you look at footage and images of the kiosks you can see that older, bigger boys dominate and push the smaller boys and girls out.     And get this to a question that came up with literally every person I talked to for this episode. What is the purpose of school? Is it to teach content? Or is it to teach students how to relate to one another, how to empathize, how to think, how to be good citizens? Nobody really knows. But we talk about it on the episode!    We also talk about some of the other downsides of these systems. Jade Davis,  the associate director of digital learning projects at LaGuardia Community College in Queens New York, tells us about her concerns that algorithms might pigeonhole Kids who might not take to the system immediately. Kids like her own.     In the end, we talk about whether or not these kinds of solutions are really for everyone. Or if they’re just going to be used on poor, disadvantaged kids. Because, are Harvard students really going to be taught by robots? Probably not.     Bonus: Listen to the very end for a fun surprise.   Learn more about your ad choices. 相关链接 维基百科对 MOOC 的解释 Khan Academy Coursera edX Brainrush Atari 以及 Brainrush 创始人 Nolan Bushnell Atari 当年的经典游戏 Pong Dreambox Rocketship Olin College Enstitute Seymour Papert Seymour Papert 的名著《Mindstorms: Children, Computers and Powerful Ideas》 Nepris 人物简介 李如一:字节社创始人。 徐涛:《第一财经周刊》驻硅谷主笔,关注 TMT(技术、媒体、电信)以及商业与文化的交汇点。

When technology and education are combined using thoughtful, human-centered design principles, the results can provide previously impossible opportunities for students and teachers. Adaptive technologies like Dreambox allow teachers to differentiate their lesson in a way they would never have been able to before, and simultaneously provide students with the instruction they need, rather than the instruction that matches the needs of the majority of their classroom. Recognizing that learning can happen anywhere—at school, at home, at a museum, or online—is the first step toward developing a multi-modal education ecosystem that more closely mirrors the experiences students have outside the classroom, where events are shared real-time on a multitude of social networks, and entertainment is available in theaters, streaming on-demand, and accessible through myriad devices. We’re in the middle of a transformation, with the opportunity to take advantage of the best of digital and the best of face-to-face instruction. And all of these innovations are changing what we expect of the education system itself – that what matters most is what students learn and not how they learn it. The panel will explore how these innovations are challenging old assumptions, structures, and systems and what it means for us as a country and society. This week on Awesomecast 157, we are joined by man of the media Mike Pound (@bctmikepound), Chachi (@chachisays) and a pre- Google Glass Mike Sorg (@sorgatron)! We start off by talking about Ohio and hats? Chachi and his dad had a disagreement based on Chachi wearing a Pirates hat. Why was he wearing a Pirates hat? Find out! Chachi talks about 3D printers and their uses. Many people are printing out video game stuff, is that all they are good for? Nope! UC Berkeley students created the Dreambox, a 3D printing vending machine. It is only $15 bucks and you can print out things up to the size of a loaf of bread! What would stop Chachi from doing 3D printing? Someone would need to help him create the 3D images. Sorg then brings up the possible future plans of the 3D printer. Chachi talks about sunsets in New York? Mike Pound talks about a homicide covered in the Beaver, PA area. They decided to use a Ustream feed to cover the news. Huge step for journalism with the ease of access for live broadcasting. Sorg talks about the accessibility of using these new streaming mediums. Sorg discusses the first arrest caught on Google Glass. Mike Glass brings up the privacy (or lack thereof) issues with all the new technologies. The cast discusses the issue of public privacy. Sorg brings up ways to use Google Glass. You can play BattleShip with your Google Glass. Is that a good or bad thing?
