Entrepreneurs often view strategy and tactics as essential elements for propelling their startups toward success. Today, Phil Alves of DevSquad and DevStats sits down with A.J. to shed light on the nuances of strategic planning and tactical decision-making and how to balance these two vital aspects. They also explore the significance of tactical focus in business, how to build operational excellence, and why a good work-life balance is vital for every business owner.About Phil Alves:Phil Alves is currently the CEO of DevSquad and DevStats. He became a successful business owner very early on at 18 after teaching himself to code and becoming an SEO powerhouse—ranking a post at #1 on Google while still in high school. From there, he grew his first venture to a 10-employee size business, then sold it all before he could legally buy a lottery ticket.Phil's relentless zeal for entrepreneurship didn't stop there. He moved to the US from his home country, Brazil, seeking further education, and settled in Salt Lake City, fore-fronting a new adventure by founding DevSquad. Over the years, he successfully grew his startup into a 100-person cross-functional team operating in the US and Brazil. Alongside, he's been instrumental in leading numerous startups to multi-million dollar exits and developing digital products for major establishments like ADP, Box, and the US Ski and Snowboarding team.Key InsightsMake the most out of your team's capabilities. Leverage the unique skills and expertise of your team. When you invest in developing and expanding their skill sets, you boost your business's tactical adaptability. This makes you more equipped to adapt in the face of changes, keeping you at the forefront of your industry's curve. (05:34)Balance autonomy and direction. While giving your team autonomy is key, it's equally important to provide strategic direction. The right balance between the two can improve productivity and bring fresh ideas while moving towards the same business goals. This helps your team be happier, perform better, and feel more motivated. (08:33)Reduce the downs in your business. Every business experiences peaks and downs. However, consistently striving to reduce those downs can strengthen your business and make it more resilient. This involves proactive risk management, where you identify potential problem areas, analyze their impact, and take measures to prevent or reduce their occurrence. (14:56)Build a strong acquisition channel. A strong customer acquisition channel ensures a constant influx of potential customers, allowing businesses to focus on delivering quality products and services without fear of losing current customers. Instead of limiting yourself to one method, use multiple platforms to widen your reach and secure your customer base. (23:23)Find a good balance between life and work. While professional accomplishments are important, they should never override the value of personal well-being. So, aim to find the right balance between work and personal life to avoid burnout and feel more fulfilled. (31:45)Phil's best advice for entrepreneurs:“Every business has ups and downs, but what you're trying to do [...] is reduce the downs. And also, you're going to be able to know better how to behave into those downs because you know it's not the end, and things are going to turn around.” (14:56)Connect with Phil:LinkedInTwitterPersonal WebsiteResources Mentioned:DevSquadDevStatsFollow Beyond 8 Figures:LinkedinTwitterWebsite

For Camille Vasquez's first ever podcast, John Quinn interviews her about her high-profile work representing actor Johnny Depp in his defamation case against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, which has dominated headlines during this past year. A key member of Depp's litigation team, Camille was recently elevated to partner at Brown Rudnick, where she works in the firm's Litigation & Arbitration Practice Group. John and Camille begin by discussing her background and early life growing up in Orange County, California, as well as the steps she took to get to her current position. Camille talks about earning her degree in Political Science & Communications, while focusing on her future legal career. Camille and John explore how she became the first lawyer in her family, tracing the steps she has taken throughout her career, from insurance defense law to trial work—something she loves most. The conversation then turns to how Camille came to represent actor Johnny Depp in his defamation case against his ex-wife, Amber Heard. They begin with Camille's first impressions—she notes how shy, soft-spoken, and thoughtful Johnny was as a client, which surprised her. Then, they walk through the professional relationship Camille and Johnny have built, discussing litigation against his former entertainment lawyer, two former bodyguards, and several other matters. John and Camille then move on to discuss the Depp v. Heard dispute itself, providing background details on the claims made against Johnny. They explore the defamation case Johnny brought in the United Kingdom against a tabloid publication there which published an article calling Johnny “a wife-beater.” The two delve into the differences between evidentiary rules in the UK and the United States, and how those differences dramatically altered what evidence was admitted in the UK trial, to Johnny's ultimate disadvantage in that case. The discussion then turns to the impact of the allegations against Johnny and the UK decision had on his life and career, including his legacy and the impact on his children. From there, the discussion moves to the counterclaims Amber brought against Johnny based on statements released by Johnny's previous counsel and a discussion of the recent highly publicized trial. The discussion of the trial begins with Camille describing the biggest challenge she saw going into the trial: convincing the jury that Amber's testimony was not credible. Camille compares Amber's performance over her three days of deposition with her less convincing performance at trial. She explains how she tied every question at the trial to previous statements Amber had made, especially audio recordings the couple had made of their arguments, at the advice of a therapist. Camille spells out how she used those recordings to let the jury hear how the couple were in private.  Elsewhere in the interview, Camille goes into more detail about Amber's cross-examination, including how her habit of turning to the jury when she responded to Camille's questions made her testimony seem unnatural and manufactured.Camille also explains the legal team's differing views on who their ideal juror would be and compares those views with the jury they ultimately got. John and Camille delve into Camille's tactical decision to lead off her case with Johnny's sister as well as several of his long-time employees to allow the jury to hear what kind of person Johnny was like in private, before Johnny himself took the stand. The two then analyze why the cross-examination of these witnesses failed to undermine their credibility with the jury.Camille goes on to describe Johnny's performance on the stand where he was able to describe in his own words, and his own pace, his relationship with Amber, and why he was bringing the lawsuit. John and Camille then discuss Johnny's performance during cross-examination, and how Camille supported him, ensuring that his authen

Your job as a Fractional CMO is to stay focused on the big picture strategy and not get dragged into the tactics, but where is that line between them? That's what Casey Stanton is discussing in this episode! Casey dissects the intricacies of what makes up strategies and tactics, and how you should approach conversations around both. You'll hear about how to delegate everything but leadership, what companies really want from a Fractional CMO, and how to strengthen the tactical abilities of your team.    Takeaways: Marketers love to dive into all the fun ways to use tactics, but they miss sight of the strategy-level decisions.  To recenter the conversation on the strategy level, ask, “what you are solving for?” This is where you need to dwell as the Fractional CMO. You need to be able to scale back from the tactics conversation and look at the bigger picture. The strategy provides guardrails for the tactics used later on. The strategy is based on asking a question and the quality of that question determines the quality of the result.  Starting with the strategy allows you to solve bigger problems! You can and should delegate everything except leadership. Instead of hiring your tactical work out to an agency with exorbitant pricing, you can hire an expert to come in and train your team in the company in that tactic. This gives you a strong tactical knowledge base in your company overnight that you completely control! As the Fractional CMO, you don't need to know every tactic out there. What you need to know are strategy and leadership; those are what companies are looking for. BE the person first, then you DO the activites needed to get the results you want to HAVE. Stretch goals are achievable, but the key way to do that is to adopt the business identity of others that have already done that. Secession and the Sovereignty Game: Strategy and Tactics for Aspiring Nations offers a strategic theory for how secessionist movements attempt to win independence. The rules and informal practices of sovereign recognition create a strategic playing field between existing states and aspiring nations, i.e., "the sovereignty game." To win sovereign statehood, all secessionist movements have to maneuver on the same strategic playing field while varying their tactics according to local conditions. To obtain recognition, secessionist movements use tactics of electoral capture, nonviolent civil resistance, and violence. To persuade the home state and the international community, they appeal to normative arguments regarding earned sovereignty, decolonization, the right to choose, inherent sovereignty, and human rights. The book combines original data analysis, fieldwork, interviews with secessionist leaders, and case studies on Catalonia, the Murrawarri Republic, West Papua, Bougainville, New Caledonia, and Northern Cyprus Ryan Griffiths is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Syracuse University. After retiring, Jocko continued on his disciplined path to success by co-founding Echelon Front, a multi-million dollar leadership and management consulting company. On top of this, he wrote the New York Times bestsellers The Dichotomy of Leadership, Extreme Ownership, and Discipline Equals Freedom. Finally, he has also created a top-ranking podcast called the Jocko Podcast. Introductionhttps://geni.us/tactics-free-audiobook (Leadership Strategy and Tactics) tackles one of the most challenging skills for humans: leadership. This book provides a straightforward how-to guide anyone can instantly apply to their leadership. Jocko Willink starts by considering the fundamental theories he has developed based on research and his time working as a Navy SEAL leader. Then, he shows you how to produce strategy from these theories. Finally, Jocko outlines how you can put these leadership principles into action at a tactical level. Take a Step Back From SituationsJocko Willink provides an analogy from his time in the Navy SEALs to show why taking a step back can be crucial. During a task, it can be tough to identify where the enemies might be. There are multiple places where potential enemies can conceal themselves. Your team might also have minimal places to cover themselves as you are pulling up to a task. All your team can do is prepare themselves for the potential targets. A more effective approach is to delegate one member of the squad to step back from the situation and see the landscape more clearly. This one member was Jocko Willink. His role in the Navy SEALs was to take a step back and survey the environment. This task allowed him to be a more effective leader, as he could guide the squad through a safer route.  Stepping back from the situation is not only applicable to battle, though. Jocko explains that stepping back is one of the most effective practices that any leader can use. If you feel overwhelmed as a leader, then stepping back is the best approach. Detaching yourself from a situation allows you to rid yourself of the emotions attached to your task. You can then better comprehend the situation and make better decisions.  As a leader, you must realize that leadership is a fluid concept. You have to adapt to individual team members during individual situations. So, you must listen intently and observe what's happening and how people are responding. You have to maintain these standards even if you feel like your head will explode from the pressure of the situation and your anger.   To do this, Jocko suggests you lift your chin, “which elevates your vision and compels you to look around,” and breathe deeply. Doing this will give your brain a chance to catch up with your emotions.  Jocko places high demands on the leader to always be tough on themselves and take charge of the situation instead of having their emotions take charge. The Dichotomy of Leadership and Extreme OwnershipThe most effective leadership style is not continually aggressive. Instead, it is well-balanced. Jocko explained that the worst leader he ever served under as a Navy SEAL was highly aggressive. He would also take nobody else's opinions above his own. This vanity affected...
