Ruben Brave loves exploring the unknown, with a curiosity that drives him to a wide variety of places and an innate talent for generating visions for the future. His story involves serial tech entrepreneurship: having set up several tech companies across Europe, Ruben has always been ‘one of the geeks' (and a Spider-Man fan). Another side of him is fatherhood, living in Amsterdam, with roots in a big Surinamese family – providing him with cultural capital and a spiritual background that he brings with him into work and business. Having spent so much time in progressive spaces, Ruben only recently became more aware of the massive impact of discrimination and exclusion. He spoke with 400+ people from underrepresented groups, people who don't tick all the boxes of the ‘default tech entrepreneur'. What he learned was that a lot of those people are being actively excluded through discrimination and less access to financial, social and representational capital. And they themselves see tech spaces as not welcoming. This makes valuable people move away from spaces that could in fact be interesting for them, and the world. It made him realise we need to see how we are all connected, on a planet with finite resources, where we can complement each other's limitations. There are many dimensions to everyone's identity. It is important to be aware of the historical and cultural narratives connected to parts of who you are, in terms of your gender, race, and more. At the same time, Ruben invites you to free yourself of the limiting aspects of oppression by also seeing yourself in a different narrative. Going back to your core and stepping into more than the framework that those limiting narratives can impose on you. That space of your inner leader where you know who you are and what you're capable of. How do you want to develop yourself, personally, to change the narrative and move the needle forward? What can you create from all that you are in a sustainable way? What is the first thing that you can do from where you are today? For our first mix of the year, we keep it homegrown with Rotterdam duo @black-cadmium. Mike Richards and Joginda Macnack's artist alias is influenced by two things - their Surinamese descent, and a poisonous chemical which they say is a metaphor for "the discrepancy between one's capabilities and the world's view." Their own capabilities lay in mixing up everything from hi-tek to Detroit tech, London grime to Dutch electro. They have landed on labels like Vault Wax and really open up their collections for this week's podcast. In usual Black Cadmium fashion, anything goes here as they race through rave, bass, acid and club with relentless energy. The mixing is tight and quick as tracks fly by at a high pace but always in a great balance between the mind, body and soul. A jacked-up soulful house cut will lead to a double-time bass workout then deep and punchy Motor City sounds make way for head-wrecking bass futurism. Hold on tight, then, because this is one thrilling ride.

Up until now, this podcast has leaned heavily expat because that is largely the network we have access to, but I finally landed a native Dutch guest! I are excited to introduce you to our November guest, Odelia Djoe; Surinamese by birth and grew up in the Netherlands. Odelia has been designing her life on her terms while navigating her black Dutch identity, an often complicated topic in this culture. Our conversation covered all sorts of ground, including her upbringing and navigating the NL education system as a black kid, how she stepped into the corporate world and her passions outside of this space. Besides being a corporate badass in change management. Odelia is also a writer, passionate about song writing and education. She dedicates one day of her work week to that, as part of the 4 day work week phenomenon that is common in the NL, and she had interesting insights into that too. Odelia is an incredible ray of sunshine and positivity and a must hear story for a perspective of how it is to live life on your terms and embrace your identity, despite the systemic challenges she grew up in as a person of color. I came across Roshni's profile about a year ago when she featured on the Live Tinted Instagram page, and her story was so striking to me that I knew I absolutely had to bring her on here to have a chat. And it just so happens that we were both wearing the Live Tinted huestick when we recorded this episode! #notanad Roshni is a proud Surinamese woman, often mistaken at first glance for being Indian, yet at the same time being so deeply and proudly ingrained in South Asian culture. She graduated from Rutgers University in May 2018 and is working in the digital marketing space in New York. In April 2019, Roshni was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer in which she endured 16 rounds of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy. Through her experience, Roshni is working to destigmatise what being a cancer patient is and to educate young women, especially those of ethnic backgrounds, to not be afraid to advocate for their health. What better time to do so than during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In this episode we speak about everything from her finally feeling some form of representation through fellow Indo-Caribbean Nadia from Indian Matchmaking, to getting a puppy (it seems there is a theme with these episodes!) to embracing her new hairstyle and wearing lots of colourful wigs, to surprisingly uncovering even more childhood-related traumas than cancer-related ones through therapy. We talk about experiencing chemo brain at work, and whether chemo hurts as much as they say it does? And also why it’s so important to keep your body in check, not letting societal stereotypes (and the patriarchy) shame you into not talking about feeling your breasts regularly. We also touch on the common idea of not wanting to ‘stand out’ too much in the workplace or among friends, yet still choosing to be outspoken and wanting to share our experiences with the hopes that it may somehow help somebody. I loved our chat and I hope you do too. Disclaimer: Thoughts and views expressed are our very own; we are purely speaking from our personal experiences and do not aim to offend or disrespect. Having studied several courses at universities in the Netherlands and the USA, Kimberly’s educational background, though decorated, tells the story of her struggle to find a balance between fulfilling her parents dreams and also doing other things that she was great at. Always a go-getter, Kimberly moved to Dubai on a whim, working in business consultancy and setting up three businesses while she was there. The aptly named ‘Apreneur’ social network for African professionals was her latest project, widely known within the African diaspora community. Join us to hear more about how Kimberly changed her mind set to match that of the work environments she encountered, and what works best as leverage in the job market here in the Netherlands.

In Episode 2, I speak to Miranda Lowe, Principal Curator of Invertebrate Zoology at the Natural History Museum – and, yes, I ask her what ‘invertebrate zoology' means! I have long been inspired by Miranda's work unearthing stories about the important contributions that people of colour have made to the study of natural history and science, as well as associated collecting and collections, over the centuries. Miranda does not keep this knowledge within the narrow boundaries of academia or museums but, instead, she presents her research in many different ways to many different audiences. Recently, Miranda distilled her extensive knowledge and experience into an article she co-authored with Subhadra Das – I spoke to Subhadra about her work in Episode 1. The title of the article is: ‘Nature Read in Black and White: decolonial approaches to interpreting natural history collections', Journal of Natural Science Collections, Vol.6, pp.4-14. It is fundamentally changing the way natural history collections are researched, understood and presented. I ask Miranda about her research into Graman Kwasi, the Surinamese freedman, natural scientist and collector. Graman Kwasi has been little known outside specialist fields but, as Miranda explains, his legacy is in full public view on the ceiling of the Natural History Museum's Hintze Hall and she shares his story and those of others through public talks and other outreach work. Much of Miranda's research into the many people of colour represented in the NHM's collections and some displays was also included in the museum's Slavery and the Natural World project (2007). A Dutch food writer tries to discover the origins of pom, the national dish of Suriname. Is it Creole, based on the foodways of Africans enslaved to work the sugar plantations of Surinam? Or is it Jewish, brought to Suriname by Dutch Jews? So began Karin Vaneker’s immersion in the world of edible aroids. Aroids are a large and cosmopolitan plant family, more commonly known as the arum family, and they include some of the most familiar houseplants. Many of them have starchy roots or tubers, and although these often contain harmful substances, people have learned how to process them as famine foods. A few species, however, are widely cultivated. The best-known of these is probably taro, Colocasia esculenta, which originated in southeast Asia and spread through the Pacific and beyond. That, however, proved not to be the elusive pomtajer that Karin and the Surinamese inhabitants of Amsterdam were looking for, which turned out to be a species of Xanthosoma. My conversation with Karin ranged far and wide, and to tell the truth I never did ask whether pom was Jewish or Creole. Most sources say it is indeed Jewish. Notes The whole question of Jews in Suriname sent me scurrying to the search engines, to discover that starting in the 17th century there was indeed an attempt to establish an autonomous Jewish territory there, on the Jewish savanna. This I gotta read more about. And having found that, I rushed to Claudia Roden’s The Book of Jewish Food, only to be massively disappointed that neither pom nor Suriname feature in the index. The big photo is of purple-stemmed Colocasia, which I took at Longwood Gardens. As promised, a recipe for pom. You’ll have to find your own pomtajer. Karin has written on Cooking Pom and other edible aroids.

There is a wide economic gap burgeoning between Suriname's native citizens and Chinese immigrants. The Chinese come seeking prosperity, and don't plan on leaving anytime soon -- James Whitlow Delano captures the settled life of Chinese immigrants in Suriname and the consequent tensions.
