Jamaican Reggae legend JIMMY CLIFF was born in 1948 as James Chambers and proved to be an accomplished performer at an early age. At 14 he moved to Kingston and took the surname Cliff as a proclamation of the heights he imagined he would reach. In Kingston, Jimmy released the 1962 hit, Hurricane Hattie and numerous other recordings throughout the rest of the 1960s. Jimmy Cliff moved to the UK in the late 60s and was bitterly disappointed with the racism he encountered there. His song, Waterfall, won the Brazilian International Song Festival in 67 and in 68. He followed up Waterfall with the release of the protest song, Vietnam. In 1970, he enjoyed new success with his cover of the Cat Stevens song, Wild World. Jimmy returned to Jamaica and left Island Records as they increasingly focused their attention on his protege, Bob Marley. It was at this time that Jimmy Cliff adopted the Muslim faith and the name, Na'im Bashir. In 1972, Cliff starred in the film, The Harder They Come. The film and its soundtrack, comprised mainly of songs he wrote. Their instant popularity, along with his album Follow My Mind propelled Jimmy Cliff into stardom. For years he continued to release albums that were innovative and his songs always carried powerful messages. His 1985 album Cliff Hanger won a Grammy Award and his cover of I Can See Clearly Now for the soundtrack to the film, Cool Runnings reached the Top 20 chart in the United States in 1993. Cliff continued his acting career in the films Club Paradise and Marked for Death. In this week's episode, Jimmy Cliff discusses his journey as a musician and actor, sharing stories about his popular songs and the impact they had on people's lives. He talks about the inspiration behind his hit songs and how they motivated others to pursue their dreams. Cliff also reflects on his experience acting. He discusses his relationship with Bob Marley and his role in discovering and promoting other talented artists including Desmond Decker. He also tells us about his latest album 'Refugees' which addresses one of his most personal causes. Jimmy Cliff's success in the music industry, in his words, has been driven by his confidence in himself and his ability to follow his own path. He is absolutely inspirational to chat with. I'm sure you will find him a delight to listen to. - "You can get it if you really want." - Jimmy Cliff To learn more about Jimmy Cliff head to his website https://www.jimmycliff.com/ Jimmy Cliff continues to record music and tour the world.

Love is the Message: Dance, Music and Counterculture

In this week's episode Tim and Jeremy dive headlong into Dub. They discuss the changing meaning of the term, the difficulties in charting the history of the music, and explore the work of two of the pioneers of the sound, Lee 'Scratch' Perry and King Tubby. Jeremy and Tim discuss the sonic properties of dub, including the innovative use of reverb and delay, as well as the distinctive vocal practice of toasting and the starring role performed by the bass in this new musical form. Tim and Jeremy also talk about why the innovations of Dub took place in Jamaica, the importance of addition and subtraction to the dub producers, and the persistent dialectic between seriousness and playfulness out of which so much Dub emerges. In this spirit, we also hope you enjoy the special LITM theme music version. Back in a fortnight with more - stay dubwise. Tim Lawrence and Jeremy Gilbert are authors, academics, DJs and audiophile dance party organisers. They've been friends and collaborators since 1997, teaching together and running parties since 2003. With clubs closed and half their jobs lost to university cuts, they're inevitably launching a podcast. Produced and edited by Matt Huxley. Tune in, Turn on, Get Down! Burns migrated to the United Kingdom in 1999 and joined a group called “The Savannas”. They secured a contract with a leading Reggae distributor, Jet Star Recordings. In 2004 Burns returned to Jamaica and has continued to pursue a musical career. He has released the titles “Caught”, “Over U” and “Sunshine”. He has also performed alongside notable names, such as “Sugar Minnott”. Now extended until February 24, 2019, Beyond Fashion takes a deeper look at the relationship between fashion and art. Trevor Hewitt better known by his stage name T-Drive is an accomplished reggae singer from Jamaica. The affable singer was born and raised in the deep farming community of High gate Trelawny, where he attended the Lowe River All-Age School. T-Drive showed tremendous musical promise from an early age and so, he directed all his energy into the pursuit of a vibrant career in music. He loved the stage while growing up and he performed at numerous school functions and community festivals to roaring crowds of fans. The encouragement he received from his audience further propelled him to becoming a professional recording artiste. Prior to the name T-Drive, the artiste took on another moniker, G-NIUS but opted to change the name because of the confusion with Stephen McGregor aka Di Genius. Intrigued by the magnetic hold Jamaica’s music has had on popular culture throughout history, T-Drive set on his musical journey to create a bit of history himself. T-Drive has made a lasting impression on many local and international hearts. He is passionately called “Singing Sport” because of his sweet melodies and his smooth delivery. His music is described as soulful reggae and is always honest and always real. When he sings one cannot help but be captivated by his soulful sound and his bold lyrics. His first single “Play a Song for Me” has made the number one spot on the Atlanta Reggae Charts. He has received great acclaim and steady rotations in London as well, while local airwaves try to catch up with his international surge. With the rave reviews from media pundits and critics across the world, T-Drive strengthened his focus to ensure that he always delivered. T-Drive spent four months recording at Vision I Studio in Huddersfield, St Mary under the musical tutelage of Vision Rodrigues and Fatt String. He has also done sessions under the guidance of Doc at Caveman Studios with pulsating results. So far, T-Drive has created a lot of buzz with his demo sampler “Give Me Your Love Girl” for its catchy lyrics and driving bass. His song “Just One” was heavily lauded especially overseas, with the expertise of Reggae Maestro Ernie Ranglin accentuating with his rich staccato flicks. Glen DaCosta, Veteran saxophonist spiced up the tune with his haunting sax sounds making T Drive’s music indelible and truly enduring. T- Drive further cemented his success in 2010 with his debut album “Africa Rise”, which was very well received in especially Africa and Europe. Currently, he is promoting the hit single “Nah Left Yet” under So Serious Record label. The accompanying video has been doing extremely well and can be seen on stations such as CVM TV, BOJ TV, HYPE TV and RE TV. Currently, T-Drive has been working closely with Black Love Productions and looks forward to great things to come from this collaboration. Over the years T- Drive has had the pleasure of travelling to Europe on tour and has been to places such as Denmark, Zurich, Germany Italy France and Bahamas in the Caribbean. Blessed with an abundance of talent and a plethora of lyrics, T Drive is well on his way to becoming one of the most talked-about names in the business. “God is my light and my salvation, my success in life depends on the almighty God.” T Drive can be found on Facebook and Instagram and all popular platforms

Cole was born in #Kingston, Jamaica in July 26 1942 and nicknamed "Stranger" by his family, as they considered that he didn't resemble any member of his family. Cole was initially successful as a songwriter, writing "In and out the Window", which was a hit for Eric "Monty" Morris. This success gave him the chance to make his recording debut in 1962, instantly finding success with singles such as "Rough and Tough" and "When You Call My Name" (a duet with Patsy Todd) for producer Arthur "Duke" Reid. Further success followed with singles for Reid through to the mid-#1960s, and he also worked with other producers at this time, including Clement "Coxsone" Dodd (a duet with Ken Boothe on "Worlds Fair"), and Prince Buster. Further duets included recordings with Gladstone Anderson (on "Just Like a River") and Hortense Ellis, the tendency to record duets apparently due to his shyness when it came to singing alone. In the late 1960s and early #1970s he recorded with several producers, including Bunny Lee, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Sonia Pottinger. These included further material with Todd as "Stranger & Patsy." In 1971 he emigrated to England, where he toured extensively, and moved on again to Canada in 1973, settling in Toronto

He began work as a labourer in Kingston where he worked alongside future members of the The Gladiators. His opportunity to cuts some records came when former Jiving Junior and producer Derrick Harriott wrote and produced Run Mr Nigel Run for Thomas. A huge Jamaican hit the song led to him being known as Mr Nigel for a time. He was also successful with Come Home a song from the same session. This was followed by a successful association with producer Joel Gibson better known as Joe Gibbs for whom Thomas recorded the plaintive Running Alone and Lonesome Road issued as by Cecil Thomas, as well as a version of Let It Be credited to Nicky Thomas.Thomas' collaboration with Gibbs resulted in a number of hits including Don't Touch Me, Mama's Song and God Bless The Children.Thomas and Gibbs also covered a number of well regarded R&B hits that included Tyrone Davis' Turn Back The Hands of Time and (Baby) Can I Change Your Mind and Tony Joe White's Rainy Night in Georgia. Fraser was born and raised in Jamaica and deeply influenced as a child by "Ska" music. According to Fraser, she and her playmates "revered the style, energy, and feelings we derived from listening to 'our' music. It all started for me at Studio One, the record label that was like the Motown label in America. It was owned by Coxson Dodd, the master mind behind us all. He signed me n the early 1960s, and i had the pleasure of working with so many wonderful performers and musicians who were also signed with him includng Bob & Rita Marley; Peter Tosh; Bunny Wailer; Slim Smith; Delroy Wilson; joe Higgs; Ken Boothe; and the Skatalites. I really liked Bob Marley because he was rather earthy, religious, and so very talented...we used to discuss our life as kids, our love for music, and the difficulties we faced trying to get our records out on a timely basis...not to mention getting paid for them. Rayven Amani, who lists Garnet Silk, Sade & India Arie as some of her influences. This local adult contemporary vocalist from Montego Bay was restricted by her parents from watching television or listening radio because their strong religious belief had them think that such things are instrument of the devil used to influence persons to do wrong. The liberated Libran driven by her passion for music did what many persons would consider the unthinkable, break the fourth commandment by disregarding her parents instructions and started doing voice training at Hat some Music Camp.  Shortly after she recorded her first song “Wanna Be Free” for veteran producer Richard “Goofy” Campbell which received favorable rotation from must of the local radio and television stations.

He had served his singing and songwriting apprenticeship with the legendary vocal group The Paragons, which he founded with Tyrone (Don) Evans and Howard Barrett, later joined by John Holt. The Paragons had several hits for producer Coxsone Dodd including the Number One "Love At Last", penned by Bob. Besides writing songs for himself which have become reggae standards - "Feeling Soul", "My Time", "Going Home", and "Too Experienced", to name just a few - Bob contributed hits for many of the other artists there In 1970, international recognition came when Bob and Marcia Griffiths recorded Nina Simone's "Young, Gifted and Black", which sold 1/2 million in the UK and Europe, and still receives frequent airplay today. BOB & MARCIA became household names, appearing on Top of the Pops and touring extensively. They had another UK Top Ten single and two albums for Trojan Records."You Don't Know" and "Life" are two songs from this time which hold a special place in the hearts of his British fans. Dillinger (born Lester Bullock, June 25, 1953, Kingston, Jamaica) is a reggae artist As a young man growing up in Kingston, Dillinger would hang around Dennis Alcapone's El Paso sound system. This exposure would eventually lead to work in 1971, as a deejay on the Prince Jackie and El Paso sound systems, initially influenced by Big Youth, U Roy, and Dennis Alcapone, and performing as "Dennis Alcapone Jr.". The first record producer he worked with was Lee "Scratch" Perry, who decided that Bullock should change his name to Dillinger, after gangster John Dillinger. He was part of the second wave of deejay toasters who rose to prominence during the mid-1970s. In 1974, he recorded "Freshly" for Yabby You, and 1975 saw a slew of releases with a variety of producers including Augustus Pablo ("Brace a Boy"), Joseph Hoo Kim ("CB 200"), and Coxsone Dodd ("Killer Man Jaro"). Albums for Dodd (Ready Natty Dreadie) and Hoo Kim (CB 200 and Bionic Dread) would soon follow. His hit "Cocaine In My Brain", which relied heavily on the main tune from "Do It Any Way You Wanna" by the People's Choice was hugely popular internationally, and was a number 1 hit in the Netherlands. His output dropped somewhat in the mid-1980s but he returned to recording in the early 1990s. On September 17, 2008, the Mars Volta covered this song during a concert at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Dillinger was known for his quick wit, humorous lyrics and vulgar content (e.g. on the track "Crabs in My Pants").WIKIPEDIA ENTRY caribbeanradioshowgmail.com  www.crsradio.com www.caribbeanradioshow.com listener call in 661-467-2407

In This Episode: Arabic music (1, 2) strongly influenced the neighboring Persian empire. As the armies of the Persia invaded parts of India, Arabic influence was further spread, affecting both modern (3) and folk (4) Indian musical traditions. As large numbers of Indian labor were brought into the British Caribbean during the 19th century, Jamaican Reggae (5, 6) was strongly influenced. As West Indian music spread throughout the Caribbean and into the Southern United States, it mingled with what would become Soul (7) and Gospel (8). The earliest forms of American Gospel included the Spiritual (9) and something called the “Gospel Blues” or a hybrid of early Gospel, Blues (11), and Jazz (10). As the first global music movement, Early Jazz also saw important developments in Europe (12). Early European Jazz drew heavily on an the classical European vocal tradition found in High Opera (13). As a result of colonialism, South African Gospel (14) shares a great deal with both Western vocalism and liturgy, . Culturally, Southern African pre- and post-colonial ties extend along the East African coast into Kenya (15). Kenya was also part of the wide band of Equatorial Africa that began a musical dialogue with Cuba (16) and the larger Afro-Caribbean world (17, 18). 1. Popular - Lebanon (Fairuz) 2.
