We love talking with this guest. In fact, we aired her first interview as one of our favorites as she shared her own story of being a leader who has faced the trauma in her past. We are passionate about helping leaders, who often appear quite confident and polished on the outside, but who are doing the difficult and messy work of healing from the inside out. In a western culture that values image, productivity, and impressive resumes, we enjoy talking to leaders who have come to terms with what it means to love God as He loves us - from the inside out. You'll want to listen in to this conversation. God's timing is so good. If you follow me on IG, you've probably heard me talk about how I feel like my current life lessons all center around humility and God's timing over mine. Well, the timing of this episode's release is just perfect. I needed this episode when I recorded it and I needed it again this week with our family moving (again! We're still in Idaho, but moving is pretty all consuming no matter the distance!) I have been feeling overwhelmed in this unexpected season of chaos. Bonnie's books have truly been gifts to me at different moments in my life. Today we're talking about her newest book Breathe: 21 Days to Stress Less and Transform Chaos to Calm (but I also recommend her other book Sweet Like Jasmine). You'll probably hear the surprise in my voice at how Bonnie and I just jumped right into the deep end with this conversation. Bonnie's willingness to be vulnerable and connect with people honestly and openly is part of what makes her such a special guest. If you are in a season of chaos (which I feel like is probably most moms with kids at home), this episode is for you. If you're a mother who is getting things done but you often feel like you're surviving alone, this episode is for you. Renewing yourself by focusing your mind on God's goodness is a powerful way to bring joy and peace into our lives. We often forget the power of the small things in life, like a simple cherry-dipped cone from Dairy Queen, that can bring a smile to our faces. During Mental Health Awareness Month and AAPI Heritage Month, we can take the time to remember the small things that bring us peace and joy. God's goodness is all around us, but it's up to us to take the time to recognize it and to take action on it. We can take the time to slow down and appreciate God's gifts, like the beauty of nature, the love of family, and the peace of a quiet moment. We can also take action to renew our spirit and emotions with God's promise from His Word and a practical soul care tip. We can also take the time to read books that bring us peace and joy. Bonnie's book Sweet Like Jasmine, Finding Identity in a Culture of Loneliness, is a memoir about her journey to find her father. It explores 20 different areas of our true worth as God's beloved daughter. Reading books like this can help us to find peace and joy in our lives. What stresses you most about the upcoming holidays? Do find yourself feeling discouraged, dreading family gatherings that fraught with stress, when it seems everyone is having picture perfect holidays? You're not alone. Today, we're tackling different ways of dealing with family tensions and fractured relationships. Join Bonnie in a powerful, heartfelt conversation about how to overcome family holiday stress with author Becky Keife – a child of divorce and a woman who struggles with anxiety as they explore the question we all ask: Why does it have to be this way? They discuss: - How our holiday stories, no matter how fraught or difficult they are, are not going to define us as God's beloved daughters. - How we can use our broken stories to shine God's light in our lives – and draw closer to God and each other through the very struggles we would rather run from. And that's the miracle of grace. Today's Scripture: And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Hey friends! On this episode of our “Encounter” series, we welcome back to the show our guest Bonnie Gray, author of “Sweet Like Jasmine”. Bonnie comes from a background of a lonely and a broken home, but God placed key people in her life that introduced her to the love of Christ and invested in her faith journey. She met Jesus in a lonely season and at a young age. Bonnie has always been drawn to reading and to stories. She encountered Jesus as she heard His story being told in a unique way at a church retreat. We also talk about the Asian-Christian community, the importance of sharing Jesus with the younger generation, and how we can meet Jesus in unusual places. Welcome to my new series, LIES GOOD MOMS BELIEVE! During this summer season, I am going to be joined by some amazing guests, and together we are going to dedicate each episode to calling out a common lie the enemy speaks to the hearts of Moms. We're going to measure that lie against the truth of scripture, offer you some practical advice and Biblical encouragement through discussion and then end our time with a simple but powerful prayer to equip you to take these lies head on whenever they try and sneak their way into your mind. In today's episode, we are going to tackle the lie: you are alone. And here to help me in this discussion is Bonnie Gray. Bonnie Gray is an author and podcaster. She writes regularly for DaySpring's (in)courage and is the author of Whispers of Rest, Finding Spiritual Whitespace and Sweet Like Jasmine - a memoir sharing her story as the daughter of a mail order bride, abandoned by her father at the age of 7 to be raised by her toxic and abusive mother. Nobody can relate to it. Don't talk about how lonely you feel. There are parts of me I need to cut off, shut down and not talk about. We are going to cover topics like: Loneliness Anxiety Panic attacks Depression Social anxiety Identity crisis Chasing the cookie cutter image - this is what I have to do to prove I am a good mom Scripture Highlight from the Episode - 2 Corinthians 2:14-15 (ESV) 14 But jthanks be to God, who in Christ always kleads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads lthe fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among mthose who are being saved and among nthose who are perishing, This week's episode was a heavy one for sure, but my heart is not to shy away from broken places, but to walk through them with grace and in full reliance on the Lord to teach us as we go along the way clinging fast to Him. I am so thankful to Bonnie for choosing vulnerability in her story and encouraging us to do the same.Connect with JamieFacebook // Twitter // Instagram // YouTubeGET ALL THE LINKS FROM THE SHOW HERE

Bonnie Gray joins Amber to discuss growing up as a Chinese American, the invisible wounds she experienced, and how she learned to care for her soul. Her journey is documented in her newest book, Sweet Like Jasmine. Questions discussed surrounding Bonnie's invisible wounds and soul care: (4:37) You are Chinese American and grew up in San Francisco's Chinatown, much of which you write about in Sweet Like Jasmine. Take us back and share a bit of what childhood was like for you. (7:37) Something you share in the book is how you lived two completely different lives as a child. At home, you were fully Chinese and very much secluded from the outside world. At school, you were fully immersed in American culture. How did that impact your identity in your young years? (14:58) It is difficult to finally acknowledged you've been manipulated by your mother for decades. Would you say, you have to choose daily to forgive her? (30:49) At what point did Jesus enter your story? (39:57) Share a little about soul-care. (43:10) What encouragement can you offer to women who feel terribly alone in their struggles? Quotes to Remember from Invisible Wounds & Soul Care: “I was born to a mail order bride from Hong Kong.” “My dad left when I was seven.” “It get got harder to talk about what was happening at home. You think it might be easier once I put myself through college, [because] it seemed like the typical overcoming achieving immigrant story, but it actually got harder…” “I just felt like half of me was Chinese and half of me was American…There was no one place where I could be whole Bonnie.” “I need to be more honest with myself than I'm uncomfortable with and I need to face the reality of the mother that I do have, rather than the mother that I long to bring into being.” “I'm going to let go of hoping that she becomes or gives me the words that I really need to be loved or feel cherished. That's really forgiveness. It's saying, I'm letting this person go from the debt that was created in my heart, that loneliness, or those wounds, and I'm going to move on with my life. And look for those affirmation in other relationships that God provides through our friends, our spiritual family…” “Forgiveness takes one but reconciliation takes two. For those of us who have people who have hurt us, we need to remind ourselves that God wants us to have healthy boundaries.” SHOW NOTES cont.
