We recommend that listeners exercise self-care when listening to this podcast, as some may find the content upsetting. Let's be Upfront about the extra challenges and different needs of LGBTIQ+ people when diagnosed with breast cancer. LGBTIQ+ communities have unique requirements and additional concerns and anxiety when dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis, including whether to disclose their sexuality to their medical team, whether they will be able to find the support they need, and anxiety surrounding discrimination and their treatment being negatively impacted. Joining us for this episode of Upfront is Jane Ussher and Natalie Halse. Jane is a Professor of Women's Health Psychology in the Translations Health Research Institute at Western Sydney University and is the lead researcher in the recent ‘Out with Cancer' Study. Natalie is a registered nurse and a BCNA consumer representative with lived breast cancer experience of a LGBTIQ+ person. We hear about some of the key findings of the ‘Out with Cancer' study and its key learnings, discuss disclosure including how to do it safely, the positive benefits, and why some people are reluctant and also discover what to do if you experience a negative reaction from a health care professional and the support available. This podcast was recorded in January 2022. RESOURCES:· Sign up to My Journey and access a range of resources on for LGBTIQ+ communities· Visit and join our LGBTIQ+ Online Network to connect with people going through a similar experience· Cancer Connect – 131 120· National LGBTIQ+ Health Alliance – (02) 8568 1123· Switchboard Victoria – 1800 184 527· Living Proud – 1800 184 527· QLife – 1800 184 527· Acon – 1800 063 060 Upfront About Breast Cancer is a production of Breast Cancer Network Australia. We're continuing our conversations about the mental health system, both in Victoria and in other states and the organisations that form part of this essential health service.  We know that the mental health system in Victoria, and in the other states and territories of Australia were already struggling to cope with demand, and that the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly blown out those pressures. Mental health support organisations are seeing steep increases in the requests for support, in particular crisis helplines and support referral services.  Joining host Robyn Haydon for this episode is ermha365 CEO Karenza Louis-Smith to talk with guests Joe Ball, CEO of Switchboard Victoria and Nick Tebbey, National Executive Officer of Relationships Australia about the pressures on mental health support services, in particular crisis lines and referral services during COVID-19. Joe makes the point that the high level of demand for mental health services, particularly during the past two years of the pandemic, was a sign that people really needed help. “I feel like it's not necessarily that more people feel like they can reach out, I think it's more that people feel like they have to reach out,” Joe said. “I think that people only call helplines, when they really, really need to, and far too many people don't call them when they really, really need to.” Nick thinks there has also been a shift in access to services because there is more of an acceptability in talking about our mental health. “COVID gave us a reason to talk about mental health that was slightly different from anything we've had before. And so suddenly, we did see more conversations, more happening in the mainstream media, more happening in politics…to invest more heavily in mental health supports.” About our guests Joe Ball is CEO of Switchboard Victoria, a community-based not for profit organisation providing a peer driven service for LGBTIQA+ communities and their allies, friends, support workers and families, including Rainbow Door, a free specialist LGBTIQA+ helpline providing information and support. Switchboard is also the Victorian Partner of the national crisis service QLife.  Nick Tebbey is the National Executive Officer of Relationships Australia a not-for-profit national provider of relationship support services for individuals, families and communities.  If you have been affected by anything discussed in this episode, you can call: Lifeline on 13 11 14 Rainbow Door on 1800 729 367  QLIFE can be contacted on 1800 184 527 Relationships Australia on 1300 364 277 ermha365 provides a range of mental health services designed to help people experiencing mental health challenges to thrive in the community.

What training and support do they receive to be there for people in distress? And how have these organisations put processes in place to take care of themselves and each other? Host Kim Borrowdale talks to Joe Ball, CEO of Switchboard Victoria, Australia, and Shari Sinwelski, Vice President of National Networks, Vibrant Emotional Health and Deputy Director, National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in the United States.  Switchboard is a suicide prevention organization that provides peer-driven support services for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender diverse, intersex, queer, and asexual LGBTIQA+ people, their families, allies, and communities.  Vibrant Emotional Health administers the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in the US with funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Amelia and Venetia are in the studio talking with Jo Ball, CEO of Switchboard Victoria, and psychologist Josh Muller about how to look after your mental health this holiday season. The festive season can be a stressful time for LGBTI folk for a number of reasons. Spending time with biological family can often mean having to defend, explain or hide who you are, or deal with the painful comments and opinions of family members. Some of us might even be estranged from our families of origin due to our sexuality or gender, and others of us may already be managing ongoing mental health issues, which may be exacerbated at this time of year. On top of that, there is the financial pressure of gift-giving and the pressure of wrapping up work tasks before the end of the year. Josh provides us with some insight into how you might notice that you aren’t travelling too well and what we can do about it and Jo shares with us their three-point plan for managing social engagements and getting through the season intact. Picnickers at Chillout 2018's Carnival Day soak up Daylesford's premiere LGBTI community event Hey, Chillout - What's Going On? We ask our LGBTI community what's essential for our health and well being in 2018 VAC journeyed to Chillout Festival 2018 to mingle with our LGBTI community to ask the age-old question, 'What's Going On?' - what pressing issues were important to people attending Carnival Day. 2017 was a groundbreaking year for LGBTI issues in Australia, with the historic 'YES' vote leading to marriage equality.  With such a massive year for our community and we settle into an age where marriage is a reality for any two people - we wanted to ask ourselves, what is important for our health and well being beyond marriage equality - what's next? Michael and Cal listen in to some of the responses we got as we roved about Carnival Day, and in the studio, we unpack some of the key issues. Some responses were no surprise at all - while some were incredibly illuminating. No doubt we'll need several future shows to truly pick these apart and delve right down into the issues. * Do you listen live to Well, Well, Well on JOY 94.9 each week? From April 12 2018 We will be settling into a NEW slot, on Thursday @ 8pm so set a reminder to set your dial Thursday nights! This show, Episode #613 originally aired Monday 26th March, 2018 This week we mentioned...
