From Trump's America to Queensland: The people fighting back against trans healthcare bans

In January, Donald Trump signed an executive order targeting the trans community by banning some medical care for minors. The move has had a chilling effect across the United States, as doctors withdraw their services for fear of being prosecuted and parents stop accessing medication for their children. But many are fighting back. In one red state, we spoke with a doctor driving across state lines, at great personal risk, to give patients the care she says is needed to save their lives. Now, trans healthcare is also under attack in Australia – with the Queensland government announcing a ban on state-funded gender-affirming care for minors on the same day of Trump’s directive. Today, 7am’s senior producer Cheyne Anderson, on the ordinary people pushing back against Trump’s war on trans people, and how Queensland became the testing ground for bans in Australia. We were truly honoured to be joined by Harchana today. Her story was nothing short of extraordinary. Having migrated to Australia as a refugee, she sought not just safety, but also the opportunity to rebuild her life. Her journey was a testament to incredible resilience, as she navigated the complexities of displacement and underwent a profound personal transformation.Harchana's past was filled with immense difficulty and trauma, but it didn't define her. Her path to Naarm (Melbourne) marked the beginning of a new chapter—one focused on healing, empowerment, and renewal. She spoke with deep gratitude for the safe and welcoming environment she found in Australia, which became a nurturing ground for her dreams.Today, Harchana stands as a beacon of strength and perseverance, a living example of what it means to overcome the darkest of circumstances. By sharing her story, she has inspired so many, showing that no matter how challenging the past may be, it's possible to create a future filled with hope and possibility. It was a privilege to hear her speak and witness the light she brings to the world. The show was aired in bilingual Tamil and English. Songs Played: Break my soul by Beyonce & Honey DijonLamis Kan by MeystaraSingapenne by Ar Rahman & Sashaa TripathiGreedy by Tate Mcrae Christmas Events Updates:Organisers have announced tickets are running low. We were devastated when we heard of Nikki Giovanni's passing earlier this week. Her poetry evokes life on Earth and in the universe in such a beautiful, thoughtful and inclusive way. We are in the process of sharing our favorite episodes from the past and felt it was fitting to bring you back our QueerSpace episode featuring Nikki among other futurist artists.  When researching QueerSpace, we repeatedly saw creators blending themes of space and themes of queerness in their art. Many of these artists use their art to envision new futures. Futurist thinking uses the experience of the past and present to contextualize and reimagine what the future could be, often creating a future that's more equitable and radically different than what we have now. Thanks to our guests in this Episode: Nikki Giovanni, Futurist Artist Lola Flash, Futurist Artist Stamatina Gregory, Chief Curator and Director of Exhibitions and Collections at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art AirSpace Season 10 is just around the corner! When Eliza Gazett came out as transgender, she felt energized in a way she didn't expect.“My initial plan was to question myself until I felt comfortable enough to be seen by the world,” she said. “But once I was fully out, I didn't want to hide myself anymore.”She felt called to channel that energy into something positive, something that would help other trans people, specifically trans kids. “There's so much working against them right now that any amount of support is huge for them,” said Gazett, who is 31 and lives in Roseville. Her therapist told her about a local program called QUEERSPACE collective where she could be a mentor to a young LGBTQ person. It seemed like a perfect fit.The free program matches Twin Cities area LGBTQ youth with LGBTQ adults for connection and support through meetups two to three times per month. Many queer and trans kids have very few or no LGBTQ adults in their life, which can be isolating and discouraging. QUEERSPACE seeks to fill that gap. What started out as an MBA project idea for founder and executive director Nicki Hangsleben turned into a full-fledged operation. QUEERSPACE collective turns two next month, and will soon expand its reach to St. Cloud.“I was seeing a lot of statistics around mental health challenges that the LGBTQ youth in our community are facing,” she said. “I started looking around to see what type of mentorship programs explicitly existed for our community and found that of 5,000 mentorship programs across the country, there were maybe five that focused on LGBTQ youth.”In an annual survey on LGBTQ youth mental health released in 2022, The Trevor Project found that 45 percent of LGBTQ youth had seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. It also found that young LGBTQ people who have accepting community, affirming spaces or social support from family or friends reported significantly lower rates of attempting suicide in the last year. Advocates and experts say these struggles aren't inherent to being queer or trans — they're the effect of widespread mistreatment and stigma, compounded with anti-LGBTQ legislation passing in an increasing number of states, much of which is targeted at trans youth.“Creating these networks of support reduces anxiety, depression and helps the young person feel like they have an outlet and a place to show up where they can be their authentic self,” Hangsleben said. “Anytime we can show up to be ourselves and our whole selves… it feels good.”Gazett applied and got matched with 15-year old Lily Mouw, a ninth-grader at Mounds View High School in Arden Hills who is also trans. Over the course of a year the two have developed a tight friendship through weekly outings like visiting the zoo, playing board games or just chatting on walks in the park. “They can talk about queer identity and queer experiences and journeys, but for the most part, the mentees are just looking to hang out with a queer and trans adult who is living their life,” said Soua Thao, who manages the Twin Cities mentoring program. “Just having an adult who they can ask questions to and see someone who's thriving and living — that they can someday become someone like them, too.”It turned out Gazett and Mouw had a lot in common — they both love nature, animals, conservation, video games and hockey. Gazett said she sees her younger self in Mouw.Earlier this month the two cheered on the Minnesota Wild along with a group of mentor-mentee pairs at the team's Pride night. And Mouw has gotten to see Gazett on the ice as part of Team Trans, the only ice hockey team in Minnesota made up solely of transgender and nonbinary players.“Eliza has helped me through a lot,” said Mouw. “Whenever I just need to talk, I usually talk to Eliza about it.”Mouw, like Gazett, came out as trans relatively recently and felt depressed and unsupported at her middle school. Then she found QUEERSPACE. Mouw said getting connected with Gazett turned things around for her. She now has an adult in her life who truly understands what she's going through and is available to talk and encourage her through it. “I feel more safe around Eliza than most people,” said Mouw. The benefits go both ways.“There have been days where I haven't been feeling 100 percent myself when we've been hanging out,” Gazett said. “It helps me find a best version of myself through helping her.”QUEERSPACE welcomes youth 12-17 and mentors over 25. The program has brought together 34 pairs so far — its longest standing duo has been meeting weekly for over a year and a half. Mentors complete an extensive application including an interview and are required to complete training and commit to the mentorship for a year. Demand is high. QUEERSPACE currently has a growing waitlist of LGBTQ kids hoping to be paired with mentors. Pairs are matched based on what the mentee is looking for in a mentor. Thao tries to find overlap in identity and interests and “then I go off of vibes and make sure that's right, too.” The mentor and mentee don't need to share the same identities, but mentees often request mentors with similar backgrounds.Thao said QUEERSPACE is looking for more mentors of color and trans mentors of color, as well as mentors who are into the same activities as the mentees — notably, indoorsy ones.“We have a good group of mentors who love the outdoors, and a lot of our mentees love video games and love punk rock and thrifting and all that,” Thao said. “I'm trying to find mentors who have those interests.”To serve those waiting for a mentor of their own, QUEERSPACE is starting to offer group mentoring, beginning this spring. For six weeks, 12 mentees and three to four mentors will take part in group activities, discussions, art projects and more. Thao compares the concept to a community class, except it will be free. QUEERSPACE requires mentees get permission from a parent or caregiver to be part of their programs because they're spending one-on-one time with an adult out in the community. That means LGBTQ youth without family support can't access the programming, and Thao said that those are the young people who probably need this type of support the most. The organization is looking for a building to rent in Minneapolis to open an LGBTQ youth center, where even queer and trans youth without that family support could drop-in. Hangsleben also wants QUEERSPACE to be a resource for families who might relocate to Minnesota seeking a better environment and community for their LGBTQ child.“We hear from our mentors all the time, ‘I wish I had this growing up,' or ‘I want to support this person because I didn't have that growing up,'” said Thao. That's the case for Gazett, who said it's one of the reasons she wanted to participate.“Something like this wasn't around when I was young,” said Gazett. “I think if I had that amount of visibility and support, I would have been more comfortable coming out at a younger age.”Resources for LGBTQ youth and familiesQUEERSPACE collectiveRECLAIMFamily Tree Clinic's youth drop-in programTransforming FamiliesThe Trevor Project: 1-866-488-7386, or text 678-678This story is part of In Focus, an MPR News initiative exploring solutions to issues impacting Minnesotans.

Happy Pride Month! Today, we're bringing you a special installment of QueerSpace, our limited series featuring stories and people at the intersection of aviation, space, and LGBTQ+ history and culture. Seven years ago this month, the Supreme Court ruled in Obergefell v Hodges that same-sex couples have the fundamental right to marry under the constitution. If you dig into an amicus brief for Obergefell, you'll see mention of another case, Norton v Macy. This case set the first precedent ruling that the federal government can't fire an employee for being gay. We talk a lot about pilots and astronauts who've made history, but today's aerospace trailblazer was a humble NASA civil servant and petitioner named Clifford Norton. In this episode of QueerSpace, attorney Paul Thompson, lawyer for the Mattachine Society of Washington, DC, and writer of that Obergefell amicus brief, walks us through Norton's case and explains how its impacts are still seen in our legal system today. “Sometimes a kiss can make you feel free.” This beautiful line by Prof GerShun Avilez (University of Maryland) was one of the many, many reasons I wanted to learn more about his book Black Queer Freedom. In addition to the freeing potential of queer kisses, GerShun talks about how literature can help us better understand the ways in which Black queer bodies are harmed every day. He also explains what memoirs of gender-nonconforming and trans people of colour can teach us about how history is written and how movement through institutions like hospitals or prisons is affected by race and sexuality. Along with brilliant reflections on spaces of injury and spaces of pleasure, GerShun shares examples of artworks and books from his past and present research and generally dazzles me with all his clever insights on Black queer spaces and history. Anyone who's observed the Milky Way or has seen a beautiful Hubble image can understand how space and space imagery can be a source of creative inspiration. In this episode of QueerSpace, Stamatina Gregory from the Leslie-Lohman Museum helps to contextualize the origins of this intersection of space, queerness, and futurism in art. And we hear from photographer Lola Flash and poet Nikki Giovanni on their art, inspiration, and visions of the future. QueerSpace is made possible by the generous support of Olay. Historically, queer-identifying people in the U.S. military have been forced out or forced to hide who they are. It wasn't until 2011 that gay, lesbian, and bisexual servicemembers could serve openly, and only in the last few years that trans servicemembers could serve at all. And while there's still a ways to go, last year the Air Force and Space Force formed a working group specifically for LGBTQ+ issues. We're working on the next season of AirSpace as we speak, but today, we're excited to bring you QueerSpace — a limited series from the creators of AirSpace, featuring stories and people at the intersection of aviation, space, and LGBTQ+ history and culture. For the next two months, we're highlighting the scope and diversity of queer experiences found across human flight and space science. The first episode spotlights the history and community built by male flight attendants. You may think that the role of flight attendant has always been a women-dominated profession. But that wasn't always the case. Very early on in commercial aviation, all flight attendants (or stewards as they were then known) were men.  But in the mid-20th century, that changed as airlines began exclusively hiring women for the role. When, in the 1970s, a court case forced airlines to hire men and women on equal terms and more men became flight attendants, gay men created a community within the industry that was uniquely supportive and welcoming. The next few decades would test that community, first with changes to how airlines were allowed to operate, and then by the AIDS crisis. In this episode, we talk to Plane Queer author Phil Tiemeyer and former flight attendant David Hinson to explore that community. QueerSpace is made possible by the generous support of Olay. We're continuing our conversations about the findings of the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System. These findings will reshape mental health services, not just in Victoria but potentially across Australia.  The focus of this episode is on the recommendations for reform specific to LGBTQ+ mental health services. For the LGBTQ+ community, there's “diversity within diversity” – also called intersectionality – for example First Nations queer people, queer people with a disability, and those from culturally diverse backgrounds. To provide genuine help, services need to understand and support this diversity. Reform is even more pressing with the COVID-19 pandemic further highlighting the urgent need for a redesign of Victoria's mental health system that is co-designed by the people who use it.  We invited Karen Field, CEO Drummond Street Services, which also incorporates Stepfamilies Australia and Queerspace and Carolyn Gillespie, Director of Clinical Services at Thorne Harbour Health (formerly the Victorian AIDS Council) to talk about what reform means for mental health care for the LGBTIQ+ community.  Services like Drummond Street Services and Thorne Harbour Health see firsthand that LGBTIQ+ people experience higher rates than the general population of mental health issues like anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation, and that the mental health service system currently in place is not always a system that's safe for them.   In fact, Karen Field says that during the past 12 months there was a trebling of the acute mental health and suicidal ideation presentations at Drummond Street Services compared to the previous financial year – an experience that has been seen across LGBTQ+ health care providers. The co-host for this episode is Karenza Louis-Smith, CEO of ermha365.  CONTENT NOTE: If you've been affected by anything you've heard in this episode you can phone Qlife on 1800184 527 (3pm to midnight 7 days) or Lifeline on 13 11 14.  For more info on LGBTQ+ services:   Queerspace - supports focused on relationships, families, parenting and young people Thorne Harbour Health - a community-controlled organisation, governed by its members, and working for sex, sexuality and gender diverse communities.Rainbow Door - a free service for the LGBTQ+ community, you do not need a referral to use this service.  ermha365 provides a range of mental health services designed to help people experiencing mental health challenges to thrive in the community.

GRL PWR, a Baltimore-based collective run by Amy Reid and Pangelica, creates platforms for women and LGBTQ identifying people and elevates visibility for underrepresented artists and talent. GRL PWR collaborates with installation, projection and performance artists, transforming environments as a way to grapple with the lack of queer spaces in Baltimore. In today’s episode, Ami chats with Amy Reid and Pangelica, the artists behind GRL PWR, about creating inclusive space, dismantling white male supremacy, and the dissonance between institutions and artists.Pangelica is a songwriter and music producer with a background in classical viola. While her composition process began with arranging classical works for viola and string quartets, she exchanged pencil and staff paper for creating music with a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), Virtual Studio Technologies (VSTs) and synthesizers. This shift of mediums is what eventually gave birth to the hyper-romantic synthpop sound of Pangelica. Amy Reid is a queer electronic musician, producer, sound, visual artist and curator striving to transform spaces sonically, socially, and visually. Inspired by her experiences as a musician, visual and community artist, her lifelong goal is to explore the environments in which all three worlds intersect.

In light of the recent killing of 49 people at Pulse, a gay night club in Orlando known to many as a center for Queer and Latinx culture, our focus for this week’s podcast is the role and significance of queer spaces in creating community and culture. We wanted to use this time to encourage constructive discussion of why recognizing, and preserving (in some way), these 'third spaces' is so important. Not just for those who identify as queer or the Latinx community, but for creating diverse, welcoming urban spaces for all. We’re joined by two guests, Susan Surface: a queer designer, curator, organizer, and the program director at Design in Public in Seattle, and James Rojas: an urban planner trained at MIT and specializing in cultural landscapes, who has written extensively about Latino urbanism.
