Peymon Mottahedeh - Founder of Freedom Law SchoolPeymon Mottahedeh, an Iranian-born Jewish immigrant, moved to the United States in 1977 and soon after became disillusioned with what he saw as discrepancies between America's ideals and its realities, especially within its financial and governance systems. This prompted him to delve deeper into American law and governance, ultimately leading him to establish the Freedom Law School in 1996, which aims to educate U.S. citizens about tax law and their related obligations. Holding a degree in Business/Marketing from the University of Long Beach, Peymon's earlier professional experiences in the mortgage industry and financial planning gave him unique insights into the financial mechanisms that underpin federal systems. Today, he is a prominent speaker and educator, especially known for his discovery and understanding of the history of the Federal Reserve and the IRS, and he actively promotes a better understanding of tax law through his numerous educational campaigns and seminars, empowering thousands to better understand tax law.Joe Banister:Joe Banister - Former IRS Agent and Tax Reform AdvocateJoe Banister, who began his IRS career in 1993 after earning an accounting degree from San Jose State University and working as a Certified Public Accountant, is now a leading critic of the Federal Income Tax. His transformation from an IRS enforcement officer to whistleblower was sparked by his discovery of systemic issues he perceived within the agency, leading to his resignation in 1999. Since leaving the IRS, Banister has made significant contributions to the public's understanding of the U.S. tax system through his book, "Investigating The Federal Income Tax: A Report To The American People." He remains actively engaged in the debate over tax reform, frequently appearing on radio shows and documentaries to share his insights and advocate for change.DESCRIPTION:Alfredo Luna Jr., a decorated Marine Combat Veteran and awarded the Law Enforcement Medal of Valor and survived 4 shootings as a cop. Conklin recommended that Banister reach out to Peymon Mottahedeh for guidance and support. Mottahedeh then became a crucial ally, providing Banister with essential information and a network of trusted contacts, including experts, activists, and former officials like G Edward Griffin, Ron Paul, Attorney Larry Becraft, and Ted Gunderson. With expertise in constitutional and tax law, Becraft and Gunderson, a former FBI agent, were particularly instrumental in helping Banister gain credibility and navigate his new role within a community skeptical of his former IRS position. Resources: Running Light Ministry Setting Captives Free Fellowship of Suffering Rooted in Sin, Rescued by Love Sabastian Junger: Tribe The Terminal List JRR Tolken/Lord of the Rings/Trauma Peter Martin's Perspective on Afghanistan Withdrawl A Reason 4 Hope” Podcast: Live Bible Podcast  Cavalry Christian Fellowship Episode Notes: Peter's testimony and background: Parents were strong Christians but Peter fell away from God due to sexual sin. Enlisted in Marines at 18. Disconnected from world on combat deployment and started reading Bible. Faced challenges from military alcohol and sexual culture during 2 combat deployments to Afghanistan and at back at home. Peter struggled with sexual sin: legalistic foundation, feeling of failure, desire to earn worth, envy of friends' hedonisic lifestyle. Started Running Light ministry and Setting Captives Free to break struggles with lust and pornography. Realized God wants to give us better pleasure, not deprive us. But higher pleasures require discipline and sacrifice What are the biggest struggles you've experienced while serving as a Christian? Military alcohol culture, sexual sin culture, life and death situations in combat. Struggled with suicidal thoughts and concepts of death since he was 3 years old and while deployed in combat zones. Recognition of PTSD behavior helped Peter feel responsible, not like a victim.   How have you seen God working through your successes and failures in your military career? Met wife while recovering from PTSD and she exhibited PTSD behavior from toxic family environment. Wife encouraged Peter to write his first book the "Fellowship of Suffering." Contrary to what American culture teaches, we can grow in relationship with someone through trauma. Although we understand neurology and psychology behind trauma, cultural factors impact recovery. Tribal cultures tend to have lower PTSD rate: Israel ~1% whereas America ~20%.  How do you apply your faith as a pastor and family man? Make time for veterans because of PTSD experiences. Seek long term relationships. Opening counseling facility. Writing books: "Rooted in Sin Rescued by Love" and "Fellowship of Suffering." Using Christianity and the Arts to express inner person. What book of the Bible do you go to in times of difficulty? Jeremiah and Lamentations: how to express honest emotions to God and see beyond life circumstances. How do you make spiritual growth a daily priority? Get in God's word every day and surround yourself with positivee community. What advice would you give to other believers in the military who are struggling? Get and stay involved in a church community, and invest in positive long-term relationships that will hold you accountable. Contact Peter REFLECT: What does this episode reveal about God's character? We're building a platform to help as many veterans as possible. Veterans taking their life due to PTSD, depression, and mental illness is a serious problem, and we need to spread awareness. Please, talk to someone. There's absolutely NO SHAME in getting help and support. Some of the toughest men and women we've interviewed were huge advocates of support and treatment for mental illness. If you'd like our help to get you the help you need, again, please just reach out to Josh at josh@urbanvalor.com for a private discussion, help, or just if you're looking for a friend. You're important and as Cassandra said, YOU MATTER!  You're a brother or sister to your military family, beyond being a son, daughter, wife, husband, brother, sister, father,  mother, please reach out

Jas Boothe is a Chicago Native, Disabled Army Veteran, Cancer Survivor, and Speaker who gave over 17 years of service to this great nation. She deployed during the Operation Iraq Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom campaigns. Her entire military career was dedicated to working with and advocating for Soldiers and their family members. In 2005, she was a single parent in the Army Reserves living in New Orleans. That spring, she learned she would soon be deploying to Iraq. During her mobilization, Boothe's life was torn apart by two significant events. In August of that year, she lost everything she owned due to Hurricane Katrina. She tried to shift her focus to her platoon that counted on her for leadership through the deployment. However, in September, she received a devastating diagnosis of aggressive head, neck, and throat cancer and could not deploy. Boothe's options were limited and posed some tough choices for her. Because of her illness, she was facing discharge from the military. But she needed complex full-time medical care, a job, and a place to live with her young son. When searching for assistance, she found there were no existing programs for female Veterans with children. Her military told her to explore welfare and social services as an option, just like every other single mother. Jas then realized that America had forgotten about the women who have served, fought, bled, and died alongside their male counterparts. She found these options unacceptable for a woman who had honorably served her country. After extensive cancer treatment, including radiation therapy that would leave life-long side effects, she was able to stay in the Reserves and immediately began looking for full-time employment and a place for her and her son to live. In 2006, she relocated to Missouri with her aunt, where she had subsequently accepted a job offer from the Army National Guard. Later in the year, she received an opportunity to return to full-time duty in Washington, DC.; nonetheless, Boothe never forgot what she and her son had been through. She became determined to ensure her fellow sister Veterans had a resource in their time of need. Jas founded Final Salute Inc in November 2010 as part of her commitment to "Never Leave a Fallen Comrade."Final Salute Inc has assisted over 7000 women Veterans and children in over 30 States and Territories. Boothe holds a BA in Mass Communications from Mississippi Valley State University and dual MAs in Human Resource Management and Management and Leadership from Webster University.Jas also features in the 2017 documentary "Served Like a Girl" (http://servedlikeagirl.com/), produced by Lysa Heslov, which follows several American women wounded in action transitioning from soldier to civilian after serving their country in Iraq and Afghanistan. Boothe is the mother of two wonderful boys, Brandon (currently serving in the United States Air Force) and Jammel Jr., and wife to a Marine Combat Veteran, Jammel R. Marine Corps combat Veteran Jonathan Hancock came by the show to share his story that was documented for a feature film called Bastards' Road. Bastards' Road is an award winning documentary recounting Jon's 6,000 mile walk around the country. Jon decided to take this journey in 2016, after he had attempted suicide and was struggling with PTSD and his new role as a college student. During his walk, Jon met with Gold Star Families, an act that was healing both for Jon and the families of the fallen. Jon's journey helped him reclaim values that were important to him as a Marine, like loyalty and self accountability. Jon and Joe discuss the importance of listening to our Nation's combat Veterans and respecting their experiences and the stories of those who didn't return home.  Are you a Veteran who is transitioning to Entrepreneurship? About Our Guest Back in 2016 a Marine Combat Veteran, battling PTSD and looking to reclaim his life after a suicide attempt landed him in the hospital Jon Hancock walked nearly 6,000 miles around the country visiting Gold Star families (those who had lost one of his fellow Marines in combat) and he ended that journey in a grand fashion at Camp Pendleton in southern California... Marines stood at attention every 50 ft for a mile as Jon completed the last steps of his walk with hundreds of people behind him. Jon Hancocks advocacy has strengthened since after the walk with the formation of his non-profit organization, Bastards Road Project. He has been featured on national interviews in Forbes.com, CNN, Cheddar, Military.com, as well as across the country in the OC Register, Florida Today, and Baltimore Sun, among others. His remarkable honesty, insight and humor encourage strength to face down trauma and the self-loathing, depression and isolation that follows it. The documentary feature film Bastards Road directed by Brian Morrison (who also lensed & produced the film) chronicling Jons epic walk is the winner of seven festivals in 2020 and true a journey of the heart and soul across our country. This week on the podcast we're joined by my old and close friend Michael J. Penney.  Penney is a Marine Combat Veteran with combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.  He served as a foreign weapons instructor, a Police Advisor to the Afghan National Police and was trained as a designated marksman.  Since leaving the Marines, Penney has been a serial entrepreneur - or "Vetrepreneur" - and has become a published author of the Five Paragraph Business Plan.  He is also a Co-Host of one of my favorite podcasts Cigars and Sea Stories. Penney is also an avid outdoorsman, hunter and lover of all things venison.  Penney shared the first deer he killed in North Carolina with me.  He is, in many ways, responsible for my obsession with deer and deer hunting (Thanks, Mike!) In this episode we discuss how his season is going, "extreme" tactics for calling in Whitetail Deer and many other topics - from pooping in the woods to, well, just tune in to find out!
