On this week's show, the hosts begin by diving head-first into The Fall Guy, director David Leitch's love letter to stunts and stunt people. It's a rom-com starring action set pieces, in which stuntman Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) falls for his director and ex-flame, Jody (Emily Blunt). The film is very telling about the work that goes into making an action flick… but does The Fall Guy ever achieve liftoff? Then, they debate I Saw the TV Glow, Jane Schoenbrun's impressive second feature that chronicles the friendship between Owen and Maddy, and their fascination with the fictional show The Pink Opaque. I Saw the TV Glow obsesses over what's real and not real–and is said to be an allegory for being trans–in a way that's brave and admirable, but often depressing to watch. Finally, the panel is joined by Lydia Polgreen, Opinion columnist for The New York Times and co-host of the Matter of Opinion podcast, to discuss her reporting on the student protests unfolding in New York City. A few of the media mentioned: “Columbia, Free Speech and the Coddling of the American Right” and “The Student-Led Protests Aren't Perfect. That Doesn't Mean They're Not Right.” by Polgreen; “The Takeover,” an on-the-ground report by the staff of the Columbia Daily Spectator for New York Magazine; the Columbia Revolt documentary. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discusses the question that's been roiling TikTok: For women, would you rather be alone in the woods with a man or a bear? I decided to compete in this sport (despite it being extremely masculine) because I wanted to challenge myself to implement flow-state. Let's say, I wanted to prove to myself I could do hard things and harness flow while doing them! Knowing what I know about what happens when we're in flow- I knew there was no other way to do this competition other than to do it in FLOW. If flow is 'optimal state' then I wanted to make this comp experience as enjoyable and ease-ful as possible! So here's how I did it... Key lessons in this episode: The 4 stages of the flow cycle How I hacked my own flow to calm my central nervous system in the preparation & day of a powerlifting competition The things that I did specifically to help me ride the optimal state of mind I've been teaching flow-state in the business setting these days but I thought it would be fun to share a personal/ life experience where I've applied this exact same framework. The difference between businesses and entrepreneurs that last is not HOW HARD they work or HOW FAST they create a result… it's HOW WELL THEY BUILD FOR LONGEVITY. But what does longevity actually mean? Longevity is about building your business from a place of sufficiency, security & sustainability. What so many beginner entrepreneurs do is lose themselves in the ‘beginner's high' and therefore hustle way too hard to the point of burn out. This leads to insecure foundations, and imbalance (although not obvious in the beginning… becomes the reason for exhaustion later down the line). What I know to be true is that although it feels better to get quick wins, the more sustainable path to take is the one that focuses on building a stable pathway (not just aggressively trying to get to a goal). The struggle I had for many years was having no balance or rhythm and this led me to feel exhausted by the business I was building! Enjoy the episode! Stop #21: Ginger's. When we left on our road trip to visit every lesbian bar in the U.S. last fall, our own neighborhood lesbian bar sat shuttered. Like all bars and restaurants in New York, Ginger's closed due to the pandemic in March of 2020. In September of 2021, we still had no idea if or when it would ever re-open. But a few weeks after we returned home from our trip, it was announced on Instagram; Ginger's was coming back! In our final episode of season 1, we're honored to share the stories of two women who are absolutely essential to the Ginger's community. There's Shiela Frayne, who opened Ginger's bar in 2000. She was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States in her early 20s. She never for a second doubted Ginger's would re-open after the pandemic. And then there's Ruthie. If you've ever been to Ginger's, you have probably met Ruthie. Or maybe you know her from her barbershop, which sits about a mile north of the bar. She's a bit of a local celebrity...though she might tell you otherwise.Thank you for listening to Cruising Podcast!-Want to support Cruising? This is our full interview with Shirley J. Ever since visiting Nobody's Darling in Chicago, it was clear we had to get an interview with Shirley. Not only is she a regular there, but everyone refers to her as The Mayor of Nobody's Darling. It a fair amount of tracking down and persuading, but we finally got Shirley on the phone. We started by talking about her life as a young queer person in 1970s Chicago. Thank you for listening to Cruising Podcast! -Reviews help other listeners find Cruising! We have so many queer stories that don't make it into the main episodes. So, on our off weeks, we're going to start releasing some of our full interview tapes. This is the full interview with Deb Greenberg, the bartender from Cubbyhole. This was back in April, Cubbyhole had just reopened, and we actually weren't allowed to hang out inside because of COVID. That's why you're going to hear some traffic and construction. We're sitting outside, on the wooden floor of Cubbyhole's new, outdoor patio.
