What if the emotional baggage from your childhood could influence your financial decisions as an adult? Join us this week as we uncover this connection with Dave Won, certified money coach and founder of Budget Captain. It is MY Lightning & Thunder: A Miracle Love Story by Albert ClarkThis is the miracle filled love story. As outlandish as some of this is, it is true. I was told by Mayo Clinic that I had Turner Syndrome and could never have children. I finished high school at an Episcopal Girl's School in another state than where my parents lived. i then went to a girl's college in Saint Louis. I didn't think any man would want me. I tried to join the military but was turned down because of my ailment. I then tried to become a nun and was turned down for the same reason. I decided I was going to live out my life alone as an old maid. No, I didn't like other girls, I just had not and did not expect to ever find a husband. My parents did not approve of any boy they ever met. Then the first miracle happened when I was 26. We met during a thunderstorm. He was a young Air Force Captain. The first words out of his mouth were, "We both like thunderstorms, let's get married." I did not take him seriously, but he kept hanging around and I was attracted to him. I had girlfriends in the same apartment building that were single, the same age and prettier. Why was he pursuing me? I decided I might as well go along with him and see where it went. My parents liked him and pushed me to go after him. I agreed to marry him when it looked like the military might separate us. I could not stand to lose him after our year of dating. We had a series of miracles throughout our life. For the next 45 years I could not have been happier. Some of the things that happened during these years when we were married were beyond belief except they happened. Some are funny but special memories. Albert Lynn Clark was with the U.S. Air Force for 39 years working in munitions, research and development.  He wrote one book in 1987, several books in 2012 after retirement and this book in 2017after his wife died.https://www.amazon.com/MY-Lightning-Thunder-Miracle-Story/dp/1545172331http://www.albertlynnclark.comhttps://www.ecpublishingllc.com/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/112124acec.mp3

The 27-year-old Air Force Captain had decided to make a surprise trip to visit his family and friends, and hadn't really told anyone of his intention before flying back home from Texas. However, late that evening, Gary's parents would receive a series of strange phone calls addressed directly to Gary. The caller on the other end spoke in a strange, mechanical voice and made a number of weird statements, alluding to Gary being impersonated by someone else... If there is one law that all of us have experienced at some point it is Murphy's Law. In 1949, Air Force Captain, Edward Murphy brought this law into existence when he stated, “whatever can go wrong, will go wrong”. While he was talking about an experiment the Air Force was doing, this totally applies to our finances. When everything is going great, it just doesn't seem like anything can hold us back from hitting all of our financial goals. Then all of a sudden, BOOM!!, everything goes wrong, and we have a major setback. The great part is, that with a properly funded emergency fund, you can easily weather this financial setback and start working toward your goals again. The question remains though, how much money is in a properly funded emergency fund? Well, that's what we discuss today, at the end of this episode I want you to know you will walk away knowing exactly how much you need to work toward saving to be ready for any financial emergency situation you face. Niki talks to Colin Slade, Air Force Captain, about physical requirements, physical training, and physical fitness tests for the Air Force, Space Force, air crews, and pilots.  The demands for Airmen and Guardians differ greatly between jobs and from day-to-day. While people tend to think of pilots when they think about the Air Force, pilots represent a relatively small percentage of people who serve in the Air Force. Pilots--especially fighter pilots--face extreme physical requirements from the speeds and demands of “pulling Gs.” The Air Force has created technology to help pilots meet those demands, but physical readiness can help the service member meet the demands. There is a growing recognition that the “industrialized PT model” isn’t working, and many services are bringing in license physical trainers to help plan and lead physical training programs.  And, what is the 1 MED change Colin would make to the Air Force PT program? But when the regular, in-person meetings of her beloved writers group were suspended due to the pandemic, and group leaders suggested moving to Zoom for the group's weekly meetings, she quickly mastered the online videoconferencing platform.  "Wendy lit a fire under me," joked Huang, referring to Wendy Bradford of Mystic, the group's Zoom leader and chief motivator. Huang, a Stonington resident and retired financial services professional who these days "focuses on re-exploring her world through writing," along with other members of The Westerly Writers Group has used their quarantine time to publish their second book entitled: Homeland: An Anthology. Huang told us that "It was a Herculean effort and like Keystone Cops… But it worked out and it was a very interesting experiment." Homeland is a rich and fascinating 145-page collection of short fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction centered on the theme of "homeland" from the writers group, a sort of artistic response to the pandemic. From the Westerly Writers Group's perspective, they hope that it reminds readers of the "commonality of life experience and the importance of togetherness," Dyann Boudreau of Naragansett, who was a member of the book's content committee said "It's our collection of love, humor, sadness and a bit of intrigue that we hope will resonate with the readers," Bradford told us that “We didn't want COVID and social distancing to rob us of writing or community… Publishing another anthology seemed more important than ever, as our country was being torn apart by the pandemic, political stress and fears of an uncertain economic future." Sixteen writers from a variety of backgrounds have contributed to "Homeland," including Jane Barstow, a published author and retired professor of English and women's studies who taught in Greece and Bulgaria as a Fulbright Scholar; Weekapaug resident Mel Jolly, a retired U.S. Air Force Captain; Al Clemence of Westerly, a retired airline pilot who served in the U.S. Army as a pilot; Andy Rosenzweig, a retired policeman from the Bronx; Bernard "Bing" Bartick of North Stonington, a retired history teacher; Donna Vaillancourt of Westerly, a Boston native who is retired from a career in human resources; Donna Ursillo of Westerly, a semi-retired freelance writer and several others. In 1985, the family of an Air Force Captain (his wife and two of his three daughters) were found brutally murdered in their home in Fayetteville, NC. But the Eastburn Family Murders case would be riddled with various errors that would ultimately lead to Tim’s acquittal. The case went cold, until 2005, when the case was reinvigorated by the cold case team. A DNA hit was made, but who was the perpetrator? This case will have you on the edge of your seat. He worked on multiple cases representing both company and lender side helping recoup lent capital or helping companies secure DIP financing. In early 2015, Paul founded LunaCap Ventures, a Venture Debt  firm focused on hybrid growth capital investing. As Managing Partner of LunaCap, he has led and executed a number of investments and distributed capital to LP’s within the first year.   Paul Capon – Leveraging Your Network Paul sits on the board of one portfolio company as vice chairman and helped guide it out of distress to its first profitable year and subsequent sale.  He is also the CEO of Wessex Press, a LunaCap Ventures portfolio company.  Most importantly, Paul increased LunaCap Venture's revenue four times and turned the company to its first profitable year since inception within in his first three years.   Paul holds a B.S from the United  States Air Force Academy, and MBAs from Columbia Business School and London Business School. He is a founding member of the New York City Military Officers Club, and also sits on the advisory boards of Comply First and the Joint Service Academy Network. “We invest in US based Military, Women, and Minority (MWM) owned companies through venture debt and warrants. As investors, we facilitate and help our companies by leveraging our network and expertise as entrepreneurs ourselves.”– Paul Capon Transitioning to Civilian Sector The transition from the Air Force to business school was relatively easy for Paul.  He always knew that he would go into the civilian sector and finally go to business school. Business school gave Paul the foundation that he didn’t get in the military.  As a result, quickly learned that there was an established pipeline and most hire from the pool of business school graduates. Paul knew leadership, team building and soft skills from the military. Hence, Paul wanted to learn the numbers. “We want to serve, we love leadership, we love camaraderie, we love building things and I think it lends itself very much and translates into the civilian world.” – Paul Capon Don’t forget to leave us a 5-star rating and review if you enjoyed the show. "I like to say I ditched a promising military career to write books, run a profitless press, and build blanket forts with my daughter..." People become poets for many reasons, but stage fright is not usually at the top of the list. When Josh Gaines was an Air Force Captain he had terrible stage fright. Horrendous. "I would almost be sick and I had to give generals reports on weapons. So, I thought of the most embarrassing thing I could do. I had these 3 poems. I began reading them several times a week in front of open mike audiences, and, one day, I thought, I could do better. I can write better poetry." So, Josh became a poet and a regular at the open mike he started attending in Oklahoma, and, then, once he left the military he helped organize and run more readings in North Carolina and, then, Chicago, culminating in a graduate degree from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a partnership and daughter, and a press, ThoughtCrime, where he supports the work of other writers and is supporting his desire for a better country. "I like to say I ditched a promising military career to write books, run a profitless press, and build blanket forts with my daughter. My biggest challenge in making work since having a kid has to do with alone time at the right time. I get up, make her lunch, make her breakfast, and my wife takes her to school on the way to work. Then it's my time to write, but even getting into that head space takes a couple of alone hours for me. Then I start to stress and by the time I get to writing, I only have an hour or two before I have to run by the post office to mail books out and then go pick up my daughter. I admit I kinda quit here and there, and then I'll get to a point where I become a far less happy human and a few hours of writing brings everything back in line."

045 – Michael Silver: Learn to Drive Fast in Less Than a Year

Michael Silver and I talk about how he got to be so good a driver in a short period of time – less than a year. And it’s not just seat time, but how he applied the seat time that made the difference, as he shares here. Oh, and we also talk about astronauts and how Michael communicated with them in space, as well as his incredibly varied background. Michael started track driving less than a year ago, and to say he’s become addicted to it is an understatement - he’s had about 40 days on track since he began! With a background – education and experience – in computer science, human factors, linguistics, genetics, music, molecular biology, color science, photography, business, and teaching, he brings an interesting perspective to learning how to be an even better driver. Michael has worked for Apple (where he developed the technology for astronauts to email from space); wrote and directed music for Shakespeare Santa Cruz; was made an honorary Air Force Captain; hung out with Carlos Santana and Keith Richards (after helping set up their studios); been a disc jockey for a large classical music station; and he and his wife, Claire, founded Audio High to help raise money for a number of charities and eventually went on to found a separate non-profit organization (Silver Linings). Pretty boring stuff, right? Michael’s main business is Audio High (AudioHigh.com), and you can contact him by email at Michael@audiohigh.com. And you’re bound to run into him at a track, somewhere, sometime. And be sure to check out "Ask Ross" at SpeedSecrets.com/Ask-Ross/, and email your questions to me.

Mongol Derby Racer Tim Finley A few weeks ago I interviewed Keith Swenson of Stone Horse Expeditions, a horseback adventure company operating in Mongolia.  Keith talks about the wonders of Mongolia and how you see them on horseback.  It's a good show, you can listen here: Play Stone Horse Podcast.  I received several emails from people telling me how much they enjoyed hearing about Mongolia.  One listener and friend, John Zeliff, emailed to suggest I interview Tim Finley who competed in something called the Mongol Derby.  While I hadn't heard of Tim or the Derby, I headed to the interweb for a little research. The Derby Wow!  The Mongol Derby is the longest horse race in the world.  One thousand kilometers or 621 miles across Mongolia.  A group called Adventurists, who raise money to help environmental issues organizes the event and want to have fun doing it.  While about 40-50 riders start the race, only a little more than half finish.  They are riding Mongolian horses.  Each horse rides 25 miles.  Each rider picks one of the horses from a string.  We learn the mechanics of the race from Tim Finley. Tim Finley Tim Finley had a career as an Air Force Captain with a tour in Iraq and was part of the Honor Guard.  As with many servicemen, Tim struggled with PTSD from his experiences.  Because the Air Force is unlike the other armed forces, getting help is more difficult.  Horses turned out to be a great outlet for him, particularly when he found a horse at a killers sale.  Tim worked with apparel maker Nine Line bringing awareness to returning veterans committing suicide after returning home. Tim is out of the Air Force now and wrote a book he hopes to publish soon about his experience with horses.  And, now he's working on another about the Mongol Derby.  This year he plans to ride in several endurance competitions. If you're looking to try endurance riding, Tim recommends checking out the American Endurance Riding Conference on Facebook and the AERC Website Get Free Helpful Horse Tips There is a "Join Our Email" list at the top of this page.  Signup.  Each week I'll send you something useful you can use to build a better relationship with your horse. Gene and Chris present Robert Salas, a former Air Force Captain, who will discuss his new book, "Unidentified: The UFO Phenomenon: How World Governments Have Conspired to Conceal Humanity's Biggest Secret." The subtitle of the book reflects the essence of Salas' position on the topic. In a classic case, Salas was on duty at Malmstrom Air Force Base on March 17, 1967 when two UFOs were seen flying near the base's nuclear missile sites. "Over the next half-minute, all ten of their missiles reported a 'No-Go' condition. One by one across the board, each missile had became inoperable." During this interview, Salas will also reveal details of his own UFO abduction experience.
