There are no answers here, just thoughts on the consequences of war. To forget that there are victims on both sides of conflict is to think in binaries and further fuel an us-versus-them environment that got us into this mess to begin with. People from different countries often have different positions. We come from different doctrines, with different histories, have had different experiences, heard different media, and hold different prejudices, and yet we all have the same basic human needs; shelter, safety, and sense of connection. War is anathema to these things. War is an obliteration of individuality, an eradication of reason, a genocide of culture and, in a world where superpowers have means to launch world-ending weapons on hair-trigger notices, any war is one against all of humankind. Countdown to Zero is a great documentary from the makers of An Inconvenient Truth all about why we must abolish nuclear weapons. Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator is also very good. Filmed during World War II, Charlie plays both a persecuted Jewish barber and a ruthless dictator. I've been thinking a lot about his closing speech this month… The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die and the power they took from the people will return to the people. Unplugging not just from news bulletins but from just about everything else too, I squirrelled myself away for some rest and relaxation last week. It was my first real break in almost six months and was very welcome. Elsewhere, I've moved all of my freelance, personal, and work stuff over to the ever awesome Basecamp (I already use their email service, HEY) and ditched Tresorit for Backblaze B2 where I'm storing a decade worth of data for less than £2 a month. Meanwhile, LikeWar is all about the weaponisation of social media. It was published in 2018 but there's plenty about Ukraine's conflict in the context of Crimea's annexation. We are never tired, so long as we can see far enough – Ralph Waldo Emerson When news broke 36 days ago that the next prolonged bad news story was finally here, it perhaps wasn't surprising I felt bummed out – a small, personal consequence of war. I've found the news distressing and appalling and I've found myself doing what I did when the COVID 19 crisis first hit and scheduling breaks away from rolling news coverage. The link between doom-scrolling and poor mental health is both scientific and anecdotal fact; it's in these moments that news organisations like Delayed Gratification, Tortoise, and Positive News come in handy. When we look out into the world, we can see the horizon. It's where each day begins and ends but it's also in the headlines we consume and the stories we tell ourselves of the way the world works. Einer, der sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat, dies zu ändern, ist István Lám, CEO des IT-Unternehmens Tresorit. Er will, dass Fotos, Terminkalender und viele andere Daten nicht nur sicher sind, sondern auch privat bleiben. Tresorit bietet eine sichere Cloud-Lösung für Privatpersonen und Unternehmen. Was das Unternehmen von anderen Anbietern unterscheidet? Nicht einmal Tresorit hat Zugang zum kryptographischen Schlüssel. Das Unternehmen kennt den Inhalt der Dateien genauso wenig wie eine Bank den Inhalt ihrer Kundenschliessfächer. Daher kommt auch der Name: Tresorit, Informationen sicher einschliessen. Smile Identity received a $7 million Series A investment from Costanoa Ventures and CRE Venture Capital. Smile Identity intends to utilize the extra funds to strengthen its services, expand into new locations, and serve a larger range of ID kinds. John Cowgill, a Costanoa partner, will join Smile Identity's board of directors. Although it won't happen for another two years, my family are gearing up to move house and I am systematically scanning then permanently destroying every bit of paper I have. Family albums, polaroids and film photos, flyers, brochures, tickets and clippings, certificates, contracts, payslips, receipts, insurance documents, medical records – everything but my passport and birth certificate – all slipping through the slither of scanner light and into a literal shredder. Photos are being loaded into Apple Photos; the face identification, location and date search suddenly making them much more browsable and sharable. Sensitive documents are being loaded into end-to-end encrypted Tresorit; I always have access to a copy of everything no matter where I am in the world. Physical paper ribbons, recycled. The process takes me a couple of days, costs me next to nothing and saves me a heck load of physical room. I can now access everything instantly, anywhere. Flash forward to the present-day and I've managed to keep my paper stash relatively small. I actually use the amount of paper waste I generate and keep as a self-check mechanism to ensure I'm following my values. My only vice is that I'm still fond of a physical notebook although I am slowly warming to Apple Notes and am also a sucker for a physical book and magazine though I am slowly transitioning to audiobooks and digital editions. Unsurprisingly, I've been cash-free for a lot longer than I've been truly paper-free. With the exception of paying my hairdresser (the last cash-only person I interact with although I'm sure I could do a bank transfer if I really wanted to), I haven't touched physical money since the middle of 2019. Rishi Sunak has launched a taskforce exploring the possibility of a digital pound and I'm betting the UK's new polymer bank notes will probably be the last printed. I wouldn't even know what to do if you handed me a cheque… None of my banks have branches. Post it? Possibly frame it as a relic of a bygone era? Perhaps the only saving grace of the coronavirus pandemic might be that it sped the transition to a cashless economy up. This desire to eradicate paper (and clutter in general) from my life has become somewhat fervent. Of course, there are still bits of paper here-and-there that creep into my life, mainly thanks to the supposedly mandatory statements from legacy institutions like banks, councils, and insurance companies. For your sake, this is a kind reminder that you don't need your insurance certificate to hold valid insurance (you just need to be able to produce one within seven days when requested), you've never needed your polling card to vote (you just need to be registered and know which polling station corresponds to the address you're registered at), and you do not need to keep your receipt to get a refund on faulty items. Shred them. As for what's left of my physical mail, I'd gladly pay Royal Mail a per-page fee to scan, shred and send that to me electronically. I can't think of any form of paper communication that can't exist that way. You don't even need to post me a debit card – I already use Apple Pay and my primary current account surfaces the card details in the app! Not only is this conciderably more secure – mail lives and dies entirely within Royal Mail's network – but it's also conciderably less costly for the company and less cumbersome for me, the consumer. Royal Mail should have become either a package courier or newsletter company a decade ago. As far as products go, some of the greatest in the world come with next to no paperwork. You should take it as a sign of brilliant product design if the thing you've purchased comes with no manual. Apple products come only with legal info and the bare minimum in the form of a manual, as do Dyson, who alongside their legal obligations include just a QR code for an online product walkthrough. Receipts, warranties, and insurance documents for these companies and the majority of their stockists are also all digital. Even for the most sensitive things, we're moving toward digital solutions. The 2021 Census was carried out digitally, my prescriptions are dealt with electronically, and my paycheques are delivered via email. In 2017, Natwest launched paper-free mortgages – a process that was previously very paper-heavy. We are on the edge of a new era. Paperless-everything is quickly becoming the norm and whilst a time where paper doesn't exist at all may sound like one of those futuristic ideals, I think we'll see it for everything but books, newspapers, and magazines this decade. When I began I was studying Radio Production at the University of Gloucestershire. I've worked for a couple of radio stations since then including the UK's children's radio station Fun Kids where I currently produce podcasts including The Week Junior Show and Activity Quest. During university I would record voice memos on my iPhone and email those to a Tumblr account. I'm not sure I was fully aware of what a podcast was at the time but I suppose that's essentially what I was making; a hyper-deconstructed, voicemail-esque, far-too-frequent podcast. After university I downloaded all of the voice memos and binned the account but I carried on logging my thoughts and capturing sound. These voice memos feature friends old and new, relationships past and present, and places that no longer exist. One of the earliest is my then-girlfriend and I walking around the since-demolished Beechwood Arcade in Cheltenham. Others are filled with the sounds of buskers and church bells, lecturers and concerts. If you listen to the podcast version of this blog post you'll be able to hear some of the things I mention. Soon I realised a lot of creatives do the same thing, especially musicians and others who work in audio, but keeping an audio diary isn't something that's just for people who work in audio. The average person can also benefit from becoming an audio diarist. My setup today isn't that much more complex than the one from 2015. I occationally use a dedicated audio recorder (a Zoom H1 with a pair of Apple Earpods plugged in) but otherwise I still whip out my iPhone to record birdsong, to blab some passing thought into the record, or conduct impromptu interviews with my friends and family (‘where are we off to?', ‘tell us what you can see', ‘what are you doing?') – much to their annoyance, I'm sure. I catalogue and regularly back these recordings up to both Tresorit, my cloud hosting provider of choice, and external drives to make them both safe and highly searchable. Here's how you can become an audio diarist: The best microphone is the one you have. Your iPhone is as good as any studio microphone. It's what I record all of my podcasts on! Introduce each clip with the date, time, and where you are. If there are other people nearby get them to say hello and introduce them too. You don't have to talk. Audio diaries can just be sounds from somewhere. The trickle of a nearby stream, the sound of applause at a stand-up gig, the rowdiness of a central London pub pre-COVID and post-9pm. No written diary is a diary if you burn every page after writing it; no audio diary is an audio diary without audio. Back up your recordings (via iCloud for iPhones) and back them up again. Label them something sensible so you can find what you're after. Let's take my last entry as an example: 141020 (the date) 1856 (the time) at Home (the location) talking about lockdown rule changes (the subject) The key with any diary whether it's written or recorded is both quantity and quality. Record often – I make three entries a day on average – and – for added emphasis – keep what you record safe. The more you add to it, the more valuble it becomes to your future-self (or whoever you might be making your diary for). Cloud storage is one of the most game-changing products in recent decades.  We have seen the cost of storage drop on a regular basis, and these tools are amazingly affordable.  These applications combine with high-speed connections to make it almost invisible to store data on the cloud instead of your device. Many Cloud Storage Options The product landscape for these tools is full of players.  However, a few have distinguished themselves from the pack.  Nevertheless, we have found a more extensive list of examples in case you want to learn more or find other options.  You can see those options here: https://beebom.com/dropbox-altenatives-cloud-storage-services. The Features At first glance, you might not care what differentiates these products outside of price.  Space is space, right?  Well, not exactly.  I want to make it clear that all of these options have browser-based solutions and generally available clients.  Thus, these applications are all available across desktop operating systems and mobile devices as well.  The functionality varies a little among the client types, but any of these are candidates no matter your primary OS. Security and speed are going to be the two most important ways to score these options.  Then close behind those is the collaboration feature.  The good news is that these features are still affordable and the providers make them an excellent deal.  The client applications, in particular, are being updated on a regular basis so your mileage may vary in speed comparisons.  The security in many cases is at a higher level than you likely have on your own.  Likewise, some of these may be better than keeping your files on a local network as far as security is concerned. Trials are available, and many have free forever storage options at 5GB or more.  Thus, they are more than worth a look and may help you never have to use a "sneaker net" again. Tresorit's end-to-end encryption protects user files from data breaches and government surveillance alike. The Swiss-Hungarian company was founded in 2011 by Istvan Lam, Szilveszter Szebeni, and Gyorgy Szilagy. They are providing secure, yet easy-to-use file sync for more than 10,000 businesses globally, and getting high recognition in the tech industry. Earlier this year Apple announced its CareKit development framework, designed to create apps that let healthcare professionals continue followup care with patients, is now integrated with Tresorit's ZeroKit, which provides end-to-end encryption of users' account credentials and their health data to the cloud.
