The profession of optometry in Canada is at cross-roads. Down one path, we see governments reducing fees, other professions encroaching on our territory, and corporate entities lowering the value of the services we provide. Down another path, we have the opportunity to fight for increased scope, the opportunity to provide better access to care to our patients, and generally improve the public perception of what optometry stands for. This week's episode is the second in a two-part series on scope expansion in optometry. In this episode, Dr. Evelyn Lo (President of the BCDO) and Dr. Sarah MacIver (Chair of Continuing Education Committee at UW Optometry) discuss why scope expansion is an integral part of creating a positive outlook for optometry in Canada. If you haven't already, be sure to check out the first part of this series with Dr. Sophia Leung (President of AOA) and Dr. Shaina Nensi (President of the OAO). And don't forget to share your thoughts about scope expansion to help push this conversation (and the profession forward).Connect/leave comments:Instagram.com/HarbirSian.ODYouTube.com/HarbirSianODLinkedIn.com/in/HarbirSianODLove the show?

In this episode of the podcast, Ari Meisel is on to talk about making work more efficient. He helps companies work faster, cheaper, and easier by optimizing, automating, and outsourcing. Ari talks about the benefits of automation and how it can help enhance the human connection, as well as the importance of managing expectations to ensure a quality customer experience. Key Takeaways: In trying to identify his own overwhelm, Ari learned to help himself by focusing on making processes work better. In trying to fix his own problems, he found that the resources available to him weren't enough. He had to learn how to fit a normal day's work into only an hour, and this is where his strategy OAO was born: optimize, automate, outsource. This has been the genesis of his career: helping get businesses to a place where they can run and grow without too much intervention. There is often not enough attention given to the space between a customer wanting something, and that being fulfilled. Exceptional customer service is about the quality of that space; the customer journey can still be fulfilling even that space is large, and vice versa. Automation can and should be used to enhance the human connection. Automation can save you money, help you expand and scale, and help to reduce errors. This gives companies more time to focus on a direct connection with their customers. Automation needs to be the second step after optimization — looking at the how and why we do processes the way that we do will help identify inefficiencies that need to be improved before they are automated. One of the big keys to customer service is managing expectations proactively, if possible. Be realistic with your customers and your employees about timelines, product, etc. Getting consistency across multiple branches of a company can be challenging. Creating core values, especially those around the customer experience, is a great way to start this. A company's mission needs to be realistic and something that makes sense to customers and employees. With a consistent mission, new employees can learn and be trained from day one on how to be an ambassador of that mission. Ari teaches four mindsets of employees: inventor, engineer, engine, and cog. An individual employee can be any one of those. When it comes down to it, customer service is about making your customers feel understood where they are, in whatever situation they are. Libby Znaimer is joined by Dr. Sheldon Salaba, President of the Ontario Association of Optometrists. The OAO has been continuing its advocacy efforts and its call for greater support from the Ford government on behalf of the province's optometrists. Dr. Salaba details these efforts and explains how these health care practitioners have been struggling to cover costs, and treat patients amid COVID-19. We can get locked on the need to be needed, to feel important and indispensable… and without even realizing it. How about challenging that mindset? Moving to the notion that you seek to make yourself replaceable. That there can be an even better way of doing things, one that saves you time, energy, and ultimately grows your business even with your absence. Ari Meisel helps entrepreneurs become replaceable so their business can grow without them. In this episode, Ari challenges our conventional way of thinking. That there is always a different way of doing things that work and that you just have to be willing to do and try it. What you will learn from this episode: Learn how to create a documented system and process within the organization that allows for transparency to avoid disruptions Find out the whole methodology of less doing which is about optimization, automation, and outsourcing Find out the tactics you are already using in your personal lives that works just as well in your business to keep on winning every time "The whole methodology of less doing is based on OAO. It's optimize, automate, outsource, in that order." - Ari Meisel Topics Covered: 01:07 - What makes his bio unique, brief, and concise? 01:44 - Get out of your way! 02:47 - Teaching the mindset of a leader that is replaceable 04:47 - Many companies are not doing communication effectively 05:37 - What is an asynchronous communication 07:19 - The sub-areas of communication that one needs to be dealing within the organization 10:05 - How the methodology of less doing works 11:48 - What it means to go automated and what are the basics of automation 12:54 - The value in outsourcing and delegation 14:29 - How to do things better? Get your FREE resource at less.do/facebook 15:05 - Are there any situations where you're not replaceable? 16:41 - One thing he does with his business that proves his idea of a replaceable founder that works Key Takeaways: "The truth is that being irreplaceable makes you stuck. If you can't be replaced, you can't be promoted, and the entrepreneurs that I work with, have the freedom to leave the business if they so choose, go out, explore, learn, and then contribute those back into the business and the business doesn't crumble in their absence." "A lot of it is a mindset. I don't mean mindset in terms of like, you are important, and you are special. No, it's really just about like the way that we approach the ownership that we have over the work that we do. And ultimately, how much we can empower the people that we work with." "Unfortunately, you have so many people who work in, whether or not they work in an industry that has a history, but it's worse when people are in an industry that has a culture -- generational way of doing things. And then they can't see that there might be another way. It's just we do it because that's how we've always done it." "The majority of communication nowadays should be done asynchronously. So, I say something when I want, whether it's voice, pictures, text, doesn't matter. And you receive it when you want and responding, 'Hi.' Now that could be using WhatsApp or Slack or even email, but truly treating it as an asynchronous means of communication." "And to do that [documenting systems and processes] is not to devalue the person who was holding on to them, it is to release them to be replaced up, not out of business." Libby Znaimer is joined by Dr. Sheldon Salaba, President of the Ontario Association of Optometrists. Throughout the pandemic, we have been bringing you periodic updates on the state of eyecare and how to access it. At its height, optometrists had to close their practises and were only seeing emergency cases even though they were not paid for tele-health services the way doctors are. Since reopening they have been focussing on providing regular exams and eyecare. They have been running a campaign to tell people that their practises are in jeopardy because the fees paid by the government do not cover the costs, which are subsidized by non-insured services. Ari Meisel (@arimeisel) created a productivity system out of necessity. He was suffering from a chronic and life-threatening illness that was so severe, he had no choice but to make the most out of every ounce of energy he had. He took everything in his life and he applied what he now calls “OAO.” He Optimized, Automated, and Outsourced everything he could. Through his own system, which is now called Less Doing, he was able to track the symptoms of his illness, and what triggered those symptoms. This helped Ari work his way to a clean bill of health. He eventually competed in an Ironman competition. I talked to Ari several years ago, after I first discovered the Less Doing system. That webinar conversation is available to Patreon backers of certain levels. Now, as I am working on my next book, Mind Management, Not Time Management, I wanted to talk to Ari again. I realize that so much of what I’ve learned and developed over the past several years is built upon what I learned from Ari’s Less Doing system. If you’re going to love your work, you have to do less of what doesn’t matter, and more of what does matter. In this conversation, you’ll learn: Why does OAO – Optimize, Automate, and Outsource – have to be done in order. Avoid the common mistakes people make when they try to “scale up” broken systems? Ari says there are deep-seated psychological reasons behind why we procrastinate. What are some of those reasons? You might learn something surprising about yourself. You’ve heard me talk about weekly routines instead of daily routines on the podcast before. We’ll dig deep into how Ari organizes his three-day, fifteen-hour work week. For example, why is Thursday his content day? Photo: TechCrunch My Weekly Newsletter: Love Mondays Start off each week with a dose of inspiration to help you make it as a creative. Ari Meisel is an entrepreneur, author, CEO, TED speaker, real estate developer, green building consultant, and productivity expert. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business, he was diagnosed with Crohn's disease while building his prpoerty development business in 2007. Crohn's is an incurable disease of the digestive tract. Ari's case was severe, and required over a dozen daily medications and several hospital visits. After reaching a personal low point in hospital, Ari decided he would do everything in his power to strengthen his by then weak body. Through a combination of yoga, nutrition, natural supplements and rigorous exercise (Triathon and Crossfit) he was able to fight back the symptoms of Crohns until he was finally able to suspend his medication. Eventually Ari was declared free of all traces of the 'incurable' disease, and competed in Ironman France in June of 2011. Ari has since spoken at seminars and at a regional TED Talk about his struggle against a seemingly insurmountable opponent. Through the process of data collection, self tracking, and analysis, Ari helped develop Less Doing. This was a way of dealing with the daily stresses of life by optimizing, automating, and outsourcing all of his tasks in life and business. Each episode of Optimize Automate Outsource is aimed at helping you find the tools you need to be more effective in the things that matter to your life. This episode features articles, practices Ari and Nick are applying in their own lives, and a few services. Listen in to the conversation to hear how job flexibility/workplace flexibility is becoming more of a draw for talent, how the presence of your smartphone in the room can lead to cognitive limitations, how email can be used as a task manager, and more. Job flexibility is becoming more and more important to job seekers If you’re trying to build a company you know how competitive the job market is right now. People with the talent and attitude you need are in high demand - so you need every advantage you can get. Surveys are showing that one of the things job seekers are looking for is job or workplace flexibility. Is there any way you can provide that? If so, you might have the edge in getting the talent you need. Ari and Nick talk about an article that reveals the findings of the survey and discuss situations in which it may not apply, so be sure you listen. Could your own stem cells be used to help you when you’re older? There is still a lot of debate and theory about the usefulness of stem cells. But the prevailing scientific belief is that stem cells could be the key to all kinds of genetic therapies and treatments. In this episode of OAO Ari and Nick discuss one company that is offering to be your stem cell “bank” (for lack of a better term) so that, should the science catch up with the theory you may be able to treat some of the health issues you face as you age with your own stem cells. It’s an interesting idea. Find out more on this episode. Could your email function as a task manager, reminder, and more? Would it be helpful for you if you could schedule reminders, send follow-ups and create calendar events with just a few keystrokes, directly in your email? Gopher is a new service discussed on this episode of OAO that is entirely based on native email. There are far too many features to be listed in this paragraph and the applications for its use are far-reaching, so take a few minutes to listen to Ari and Nick discussing the app. Nick’s learning Italian - for a very interesting reason. One of the things Nick has long felt he needs to work on is what he calls his monotone way of speaking. He feels he’s a good communicator but would benefit greatly from learning better voice inflection and expression. What’s he doing to correct the issue? He’s taking Italian lessons. So much of the language is dependent on tone of voice and inflection, he’s finding it very helpful. Hear the entire story on this episode and maybe you’ll discover a solution to YOUR monotone voice. :) Featured Resources Mentioned On This Episode [0:06] Ari’s travel schedule and events over the next few weeks. Be sure you listen to hear some of the latest services and apps that can make your life more effective. Robotic furniture - really? Yes, and it’s very cool. Pulsed Electromagnetic Stimulation (PEMS) has nearly 50 years of medical/neurological applications and scientifically-proven health benefits and on today’s episode of OAO, we discuss a new device - the Elf Emmit that has come on the scene to help you align your body with your mind. It sounds a bit odd and requires that you wear a funky headband with a cable running to your smartphone, but if it works, it’s really cool. Pulsed Electromagnetic Stimulation devices may be something you should put on your radar, and you can check out one such device on this episode. A travel adapter you won’t mind using. Most travel adapters are bulky and don’t always work like you expect. But those days are gone with the advent of Micro, a mini-travel adaptor that’s got Ari very excited. On this episode of OAO, the guys talk about this new device and why it’s an extreme upgrade from the traditional travel adapters that have been around for years. And this one has a surge protector fuse to keep your devices safe. If you travel internationally you’ll want to see this. Get the money your health insurance company owes you. This episode of OAO is a bit different because we have some observations to share about the lessons we learned at our recent Leverage team retreat. It was great to be eyeball to eyeball with each other. We discovered many things that could make our relationships and workflow better. Now that we’re back we’re seeing great results, already. We hope the insights we learned can help you as you build your own optimized, automated, and outsourced empire. The power of being “in person” is huge. Don’t underestimate it. Here at Leverage, we pride ourselves on moving quickly. We make fast decisions and take action rapidly. But at our recent team retreat, we saw how much faster things go in-person. Simple things - like the time it takes to give input and receive feedback are dramatically impacted in positive ways when you can be face to face, even for a short amount of time. So yes, you can and should build and effective remote team, but do what you can to get together in person as you are able. You’ll find the benefits are bigger than you think. The goal of making yourself replaceable can force you to do very good things for your business. Neither Nick or Ari have any intention of building the company so that it can run without them entirely - in other words, they don’t plan on replacing themselves through the automation they’ve put in place. BUT, thinking as if you DO want to replace yourself can help you put some incredible time-saving systems and automation in place that will benefit your company. The guys chat a bit about that concept and how it can improve your workflow and increase effectiveness, on this episode of Optimize, Automate, Outsource. Need to do some cleanup around your house? Here’s an affordable way to do it. You’ve seen those construction dumpsters outside your local construction site, right? Those are usually expensive and you pay for them according to the time you have them. But there’s a new option that is very inexpensive ($29 each) and you can keep them as long as you like. When you’re ready, you call to have it picked up for a one-time fee. And these bags (yes, bags) are the size of a regular construction dumpster. Seriously. Find out more on this episode. Need a new eyeglass subscription? There’s an app for that. It was only a matter of time - and it sounds unbelievable, but you can now get your eyes checked via an app, have it write your prescription, and order your glasses. Amazing. You never have to go see the eye Doc if you don’t want to. Surely there are limitations depending on the condition of your eyes but this is truly revolutionary.
