The Hidden Impact of College Major Selection on Admissions with Rick Clark

College and Career Clarity

In this episode, Lisa and Rick discuss:How a student's choice of future intended major impacts their college admissions chancesThe role of holistic review in determining “Fit To Major” (FTM)The challenges students face when trying to change majors after admissionWhy flexibility is essential in the college application processKey Takeaways: Colleges often evaluate whether a student's academic choices and extracurricular activities align with their intended major, so applying without evidence of interest in that field can weaken an application, even at schools that do not directly admit by major. Some universities, particularly for highly competitive majors like computer science and business, have strict policies that prevent or limit students from switching into these programs after enrollment, making initial major selection a critical decision.Admissions officers look for patterns of demonstrated interest, expecting engineering applicants to take advanced math and science courses or business applicants to show entrepreneurial involvement, which helps determine if a student is truly prepared for their chosen major.Students who remain open to alternative entry pathways—such as summer admissions, starting at a different campus, or transferring later—increase their chances of reaching their academic and career goals, even if they don't initially get into their first-choice program.“The more kids can put themselves in a position where they have choices and options, the better off they're going to be.” – Rick ClarkAbout Rick Clark: Rick Clark is Georgia Tech's inaugural Executive Director for Strategic Student Access, leading efforts to expand enrollment, access, and affordability through key partnerships. Previously, he spent 15 years as AVP and Executive Director of Undergraduate Admission, strengthening Tech's brand, academic profile, and enrollment. He serves on national councils, including NACAC's Committee on Leadership in College Admission, and speaks at U.S. embassies on higher education. Rick is the creator of the GT Admissions blog, co-author of The Truth About College Admission, and co-host of its podcast. A native of Atlanta, he holds degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill and Georgia State and has worked at Georgia State, The McCallie School, and Wake Forest University.Episode References:Blueprint to Understanding Admissions by Major: https://flourishcoachingco.com/majorsThe Truth about College Admission by Brennan Barnard & Rick Clark: https://www.amazon.com/Truth-about-College-Admission-Together/dp/142143637XThe College Admissions Process Podcast by John Durante: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-college-admissions-process-podcast/id1608682810Get Lisa's Free on-demand video: How-to guide for your teen to choose the right major, college, & career...(without painting themselves into a corner, missing crucial deadlines, or risking choices you both regret). flourishcoachingco.com/video Connect with Rick:Twitter: https://x.com/Clark2CollegeLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/raclarkatl/The Truth about College Admission Podcast: Connect with Lisa:Website: https://www.flourishcoachingco.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@flourishcoachingcoInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/flourishcoachingco/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/flourish-coaching-co

Mission Admissions
Ep. 60: Strategies For Creating Meaningful Interactions With Parents

Mission Admissions

Parents and guardians are the most influential external voices in a student's college search. Yet, many colleges still struggle to engage them effectively. In episode 60 of the Mission Admissions podcast, Jeremy Tiers sits down with Derek Faasse from Capital University to discuss how their admissions team has transformed its approach to parent-specific engagement. From tailored communications to reimagined events, Faasse shares strategies that have increased event attendance, improved family conversations, and strengthened enrollment outcomes.Guest Name: Derek Faasse, Director of Undergraduate Admission, Capital UniversityGuest Social: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derekfaasse/Guest Bio: Derek Faasse is currently the Director of Undergraduate Admission at Capital University, located in Columbus, Ohio. He has previously worked regionally for Lake Superior State University, The University of Alabama, and the University of Toledo. Derek also currently serves as the Treasurer of the Ohio ACAC organization, and outside of the admissions world he's a composer for marching bands, and a dad to four young children.Key TakeawaysParents need their own communication strategy. Simply CC'ing them on student emails isn't enough—Capital University sends separate, targeted messages tailored to parents' concerns.Financial investment messaging resonates with parents. While students focus on campus life and academics, parents want to know about long-term return on investment, career outcomes, and affordability.Event attendance improves with proactive parent outreach. By directly involving parents in event reminders and follow-ups, Capital University has dramatically increased their show rates.Parents ask different questions than students. Concerns about safety, internships, and career readiness often come from parents, making it essential to provide clear and proactive answers.Segmentation and personalization make a difference. Capital has refined its approach by tailoring outreach based on geographic location, program interest, and demonstrated engagement. How Capital University Enhanced Parent Engagement in AdmissionsRecognizing the Tipping Point: Why Parent Engagement Had to ChangeLike many colleges, Capital University initially focused most of its communications on students. However, repeated questions from their Vice President of Enrollment Management made it clear—parents weren't getting the information they needed. Instead of treating parents as secondary recipients, the team at Capital began viewing them as essential partners in the admissions process. The first step was to reconsider what content was reaching households. While students received updates on student life and campus experiences, parents needed different messaging—something that spoke to their role in financing and supporting their child's education. How Capital Transformed Its Parent Outreach StrategyRather than launching an overwhelming, year-long plan all at once, Capital University took an incremental approach. They started by adjusting their event communication strategy, recognizing that parents often decide whether or not a student will visit campus. One major change was creating parent-specific emails instead of simply copying them on student messages. This not only resolved an issue where parents unsubscribing also removed students from communications, but it also allowed for more tailored messaging. Instead of campus events and student organizations, parents received emails focusing on investment value, career preparation, and financial aid clarity.By refining their strategy, Capital University found that parents became more engaged, asked more questions, and felt more confident in their family's decision-making process. The ROI of Parent Engagement: Increased Event Attendance and Stronger ConversationsThe results of Capital's efforts have been undeniable. Their admitted student events now see nearly perfect attendance, a testament to the power of direct parent communication. By ensuring that parents receive weekly event updates, personalized outreach, and detailed logistical information, Capital has significantly improved both registration and attendance rates.Beyond just numbers, the shift in parent engagement has led to richer conversations. Parents are now asking more in-depth questions about career readiness, internships, and post-graduate success—topics that students may not always think to explore on their own.How Capital Structures Parent Engagement at EventsOne of Capital's most successful initiatives has been dedicated parent programming at admitted student events. Rather than simply accompanying their students, parents are given the opportunity to meet with current faculty, alumni, and other parents who have already navigated the college investment process. This approach serves multiple purposes:Encouraging open conversations. Without their students present, parents feel more comfortable asking direct questions about safety, finances, and student support services.Building trust through peer-to-peer connections. Hearing from current parents reassures prospective families about their decision.Providing clear post-graduate outcomes. Parents want to know how a college will prepare their child for life after graduation, making career services and alumni success a focal point.Segmentation and Personalization: The Key to Meaningful EngagementCapital University's ability to refine their parent communication strategy is largely due to their emphasis on segmentation. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, they tailor messaging based on factors such as:Academic interest – Parents of nursing students, for example, receive information about clinical experiences, while business parents get details on internships and networking.Geographic location – Given that students within 100 miles are more likely to enroll, Capital prioritizes outreach differently based on distance.Demonstrated interest – Parents whose students have visited campus or engaged with emails receive more personalized follow-ups.By breaking down their communications into more targeted segments, Capital has been able to make their outreach more relevant, engaging, and actionable.Lessons for Other Institutions: Small Steps Lead to Big ChangesFor colleges looking to improve their parent engagement strategy, the key takeaway is this: start small and build from there. Schools don't need to overhaul their entire process overnight. Instead, they can begin by making simple adjustments:Introduce a parent-specific email campaign.Enhance event communication with personalized reminders.Create opportunities for parent-to-parent conversations.Segment messaging based on student interests and family needs.By taking an incremental approach, institutions can gradually refine their strategies and create a more inclusive, informed admissions process for families.Final ThoughtsEngaging parents isn't just a nice-to-have—it's a must. Schools that prioritize meaningful, transparent communication with families will stand out in an increasingly competitive admissions landscape. Capital University's success proves that when parents feel informed and valued, they become active partners in the enrollment journey. - - - -Connect With Our Host:Jeremy Tiershttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jeremytiers/https://twitter.com/CoachTiersAbout The Enrollify Podcast Network:Mission Admissions is a part of the Enrollify Podcast Network. Finding your best fit school requires a lot of smart research, so don't overlook one of the best sources of institutional information available. Amy and Mike invited independent counselor Jane Gabin to discuss how the common data set can help interpret what colleges tell you. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What is the Common Data Set? How can studying the CDS help with judging the value of a school? What does a school's graduation rate tell us about the school? How can the CDS be accessed and can anyone look at it? Are there schools that try to hide their data? MEET OUR GUEST Jane S. Gabin has been publishing articles on colleges' over-hiring of adjunct faculty since 2015, when she wrote about the problem in “Ask the College Counselor,” her regular column for InsideSchools.com. Her writing on this subject has also appeared in Inside Higher Ed (June 24, 2019), the Academe Blog (July 2, 2019 and May 21, 2020), and The College Prep Guide (college-prep-guide.com). A member of NACAC, SACAC, and the International ACAC, as well as the Higher Education Consultants Association (HECA), she currently works as an independent counselor, addressing groups such as the local NAACP Youth Council about educational opportunities, and speaking to parents and students at local public libraries.  Dr. Gabin has over 20 years in the college admissions profession. She worked for 10 years for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at UNC-Chapel Hill, where she was in charge of all international admissions and counselor relations. She followed this with 11 years in college advising at independent schools in the NYC area, primarily at the United Nations International School (UNIS).  She gave a talk at the SACAC 2020 conference on “Another Way of Looking at What Makes a College ‘Good'” when she addressed this issue (in addition to suggesting a close look at colleges' admission rate, retention rate, class size, and graduation rate).  Additionally, she has given or led sessions (primarily on the essay process) at the New Jersey ACAC, the New York State ACAC, NACAC, and for KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) in NYC. In last week's episode, I shared my interview with Lisa Marker-Robbins, who has helped nearly 4,000 high school students and young adults gain the insight, experiences, and confidence they need to embark on their post-high school path. In that conversation, we discussed why strong GPAs and high test scores may not be enough for your student to gain admittance to their dream college. Today, Lisa was kind enough to let me share an episode of her College and Career Clarity Podcast. At many schools, like the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, prospective students must apply to a specific major when applying to college during the high school senior year. Since this is not standard at all colleges, it can be a confusing hurdle for many high schoolers and their families – but it doesn't have to be. What does this mean for your teen? In this episode of the College and Career Clarity Podcast, Lisa Marker-Robbins speaks with Andy Borst, UIUC's Director of Undergraduate Admissions, you'll learn how college major-based admissions works and how to set your teen up to successfully navigate the process. Although it can sometimes seem like it, admissions officers aren't in the business of crushing your teen's dreams. In fact, they want to make things possible for as many students as they can, and that's where a college major-based admissions process can come into play. Each university can only accommodate a certain number of students in each program, so this type of application can help admissions staff focus on the students that are truly interested in the major and most likely to thrive. When it comes to schools that admit by major, you might be surprised to learn that certain majors at these schools might be restricted to your student applying only as a 12th grader. For instance, if your child wants to study Computer Science at UIUC, they can only be admitted as a freshman or a transfer from another school. This means it's crucial that your student does the work in high school to identify a college major that aligns to their wiring.  Andy warns not to try to take a shortcut into these highly competitive majors by applying for a different major in the hopes of transferring into your student's desired field later. Trying to game the system isn't wise. In these cases, your teen will be better off attending a different university where they have an assured start in their top choice major. In this special episode recorded live at NACAC, we chat with Derek Faasse, Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Capital University, about the evolving pathways to leadership in higher education. As a presenter and planning committee member for next year's NACAC conference in Columbus, Derek shares insights on how aspiring leaders can navigate their careers, the challenges facing admissions professionals today, and the opportunities that come with leadership in higher education.Key TakeawaysPathways to Leadership Vary: There are many different routes to leadership, whether through staying at the same institution or relocating across the country to find new opportunities.Leadership in Higher Ed Faces Unique Challenges: Enrollment cliffs, the Supreme Court's decisions, and industry changes are driving many admissions professionals to explore roles outside of higher ed.Mentorship and Lifelong Learning Matter: Seeking mentorship from both inside and outside of your institution, and committing to continuous learning, are key to progressing into leadership roles. What leadership pathways exist in higher education admissions?Derek Faasse's presentation at NACAC focuses on the many ways admissions professionals can step into leadership roles. From those who move across the country for new opportunities to others who work their way up at their alma mater, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to career growth in higher education. In fact, Fossey noted that director positions in admissions are on the rise, but there's a gap in leadership readiness that aspiring directors must be prepared to fill. Why are there so many open director positions in higher education admissions?Derek attributes the increase in job openings to several factors, including the ongoing brain drain in higher education. Many professionals are leaving for roles in the ed-tech space or outside the sector altogether due to the pressures of enrollment declines and legislative changes. This shift, however, creates opportunities for rising professionals to step into leadership roles, offering a chance to reshape the field. How can aspiring leaders prepare for the next step in their careers?Faasse emphasizes the importance of mentorship and continuous learning. Aspiring leaders need to actively seek out guidance from current directors and industry professionals, including those on the vendor side of higher ed. It's also essential to cultivate skills and confidence along the way. According to Derek, aspiring leaders should embrace a mindset of lifelong learning, consistency, and growth to move ahead in their careers. - - - -Connect With Our Co-Hosts:Mallory Willsea https://www.linkedin.com/in/mallorywillsea/https://twitter.com/mallorywillseaSeth Odell https://www.linkedin.com/in/sethodell/https://twitter.com/sethodellAbout The Enrollify Podcast Network:The Higher Ed Pulse is a part of the Enrollify Podcast Network. When Ralph Waldo Emerson suggested that it's the journey, not the destination, that matters, he may not have had higher education in mind. That said, applicants often overlook what really matters on the road to college. Amy and Mike invited college consultant Arthur Smith to explore the intrinsic value of the college admissions process. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What does the college admissions process entail in general? What is actually involved when you focus on “the process” instead of the outcome? How can focusing on “the process” lead to more satisfying outcomes in the admissions process? What roles do ambition and authenticity play in the college admissions process? In what ways does learning how to focus on the process set students up with a valuable life lesson that goes beyond the college applications? MEET OUR GUEST With 25 years of experience working with students and their parents at Cornell and Duke Universities as an advising dean, admissions chair, and Division I head coach, Dr. Arthur Smith is intimately familiar with what it takes to be successful in the selective admissions process. Dr. Smith, known as Artie to his colleagues and students, studied history and Africana Studies as an undergraduate in the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University, where he graduated cum laude and with distinction in all subjects. He continued his education at Duke University, where he earned his MA and Ph.D. in history. Returning to Cornell, Artie served as an assistant director of admissions in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and was the athletics liaison between the seven different admissions offices at Cornell and the university's 36 varsity teams. He then spent nine years as an admissions and advising dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, where he chaired admissions committees and guided hundreds of students through the college's curriculum. His unique journey in higher education has also been defined by a highly successful 23 years of coaching track and field and cross country at the Division I level. A nationally recognized distance coach who worked with 19 All-Americans, 31 Ivy League champions, and 12 Eastern champions while coaching 19 Ivy League Championship teams, Artie was Cornell's head women's track and field and cross country coach. During his time in the Ivy League, Artie chaired admissions committees and evaluated over 20,000 applications, served as a faculty advisor and advising dean, managed the TransAtlantic Series, an Exchange between Cornell University and Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the United Kingdom, and mentored hundreds of student-athletes. Artie's teams and athletes were outstanding in the classroom, with six of his students earning CoSIDA Academic All-American honors, two students earning NCAA Elite 89/90 honors, and three going on to win Marshall and Goldwater Scholarships. Notably, every student he coached who applied for medical school, veterinary school, or law school gained admission. Artie is here to listen and work with each student's goals. His two decades of mentoring experiences contribute to his firm belief that success in college—and beyond—comes from a person's creativity, authenticity, and concern for others. He can help you tell your story. Artie can be reached at https://www.arthursmithadvising.com. We've been sold a story by industry leaders that STEM jobs are the future; we lionize tech and math nerds; we push kids to take the highest possible math classes. Why?Looking at some of our biggest problems that humanity faces – – climate change, sectarian violence, political paralysis, authoritarianism— and it's clear that while technology can, has, and always will play a vital role, it's foolish to think that technology will save us. We can't simply tech our way out of our problems. This isn't an anti-STEM rant. It's a call for a more balanced approach. Mentioned in the episode:Math Anxiety Is Real. College and Career Clarity

Although it can sometimes seem like it, admissions officers aren't in the business of crushing your teen's dreams. They want to make things possible for as many students as possible, and that's where a college major-based admissions process can come into play. Your student must work in high school to identify a college major that aligns with their wiring. Andy warns not to try to take a shortcut into these highly competitive majors by applying for a different major in the hopes of transferring into your student's desired field later. Trying to game the system isn't wise. In these cases, your teen will be better off attending a different university where they have an assured start in their top choice major.Of course, this kind of application process can feel unfair to your high schooler who is just on the cusp of adulthood. That's where the Flourish Coaching course Launch Career Clarity comes in. Our online course with live support aims to help your teen discover the right college major, so your teen finds the right college and has more favorable outcomes. Highlights What is college admission by majorWhat majors are among the most popular and, therefore most competitiveHow do restricted majors eliminate options for many high school studentsWhen can your teen choose a second college majorQuestion to ask colleges about admission by majorAbout Andy Borst:Andy Borst is the Director of Undergraduate Admissions with responsibility for recruiting, admitting, and enrolling new freshmen and new transfer students to the university. Prior to joining the University of Illinois, he served in the same position at Western Illinois University from 2011 to 2016. Andy serves on the Admissions Practices committee for the Illinois Association of College Admissions Counseling, which reviews and enforces ethical standards for college admissions in the State of Illinois.
