It's the series one finale, and our very special guest is BBC war correspondent, UNICEF Ambassador and former independent MP for Tatton, Martin Bell OBE. Martin takes Jacob and Jordan through his time spent in warzones in Vietnam, Bosnia and the Middle East, his historic election campaign against Neil Hamilton in 1997, and his time in Parliament as the first MP elected as an independent in almost 50 years. Martin is also one of very few people to have written to an insurer about damage caused by a falling cow or to have been protested against in the form of a calypso.Music: Robbie GeorgeRecording Producer: Alex MatthewsOur Linktree: linktr.ee/careersmarepodcast Hosted on Acast. Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio's weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view. This week: Our guest is master musician, UNICEF Ambassador and friend of the show Cobhams Asuquo. In this interview - recorded down the line from his home in Lagos earlier this month - Cobhams shares with us his excitement about the release of his new material. The show features exclusive pre-release snippets of forthcoming single Elephant Man - which marks a radical change in artistic direction for Cobhams. His new sound is a bit more edgy. If you're familiar with Cobhams' work, you may be shocked by the Afrobeat rhythms, lyrics that include mentions of Bentleys and Ferraris and Mr Asuquo boasting of the ‘ice' hanging from his neck. But in his own inimitable way, Cobhams is using this musical vocabulary to put across a positive social message. Just because he's blind doesn't mean that he doesn't like nice things. What's more, he's come by these nice things through determination and hard work. And he's enjoying those things in a totally wholesome way. Responsibly. Who knows, he may even inspire other people living with a vision impairment to be as ambitious and to express themselves As Cobhams says in the interview: “This is not the life that's expected of a blind person in Africa… To get in front of the microphone, to maybe hold a blinged out mic… It's a little daring. ‘How dare you! You're blind! Tell us about how the world should be a better place.'.... I'm going to tell you that, but I also need you to know that when you pay me for telling you how the world should be a better place, sometimes I have a good time and I want you to see that.” What do you think of the message behind Cobhams' new music? Will you be adopting his “wholesome hip-hop” approach to life? Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... Just like THIS one!The year was 1913. The place—Brooklyn, New York. A baby boy was born named David Daniel Kaminsky. Very early in life, Danny, as they called him, wanted to be an entertainer. In fact, his first acting role was to be a watermelon seed in his kindergarten play. And a fine watermelon seed he was! By age 13, he made money by singing in the streets near his home. He later worked for a radio station and began performing comedy at camps and at hotels. By age 20, Danny Kaminsky changed his name to Danny Kaye, and started becoming very successful in show business. Everyone loved Danny Kaye! It's true that all of his life he made people smile with songs, dances, and funny stories, but what really made Danny Kaye a HERO had nothing to do with show business. You see, Danny was very concerned about poor children all over the world who didn't have enough food to eat, clothes to wear, or opportunity for education. So he joined an organization sponsored by the United Nations called UNICEF. That stands for “United Nations Children's Fund.” He believed that it was everyone's responsibility to HELP, and along with making speeches and giving his own money, Danny flew his own airplane all over the world to take things to needy children. Once, he flew to sixty-five different cities in just five days! In 1987, Danny Kaye was honored by the United Nations as the man who first “heightened global awareness of the plight of unfortunate children throughout the world.” Those are big words to say, simply, that Danny Kaye became a very special HERO. That's what I know about the beginning of This Hero, and I know that YOU Can Be a Hero TOO!Dear Parents, After years of development, trial, and revision, we are so excited to now share with you the most effective version yet of our Proactive Bully Prevention Program that has proven to "change the culture" at hundreds of campuses across America in profound ways. Research has shown the TCN Method™ to be the single most effective school based Violence and Bully Prevention Intervention of its entire genre. We have hundreds of testimonials from educators describing the results they have gotten, and you can view many of these at http://www.thecharacternetwork.org/Testimonials (www.TheCharacterNetwork.org/Testimonials) This program, The Beginning of a Famous Hero™ is used in conjunction with a companion program called Bully Alert!™ in schools played over the intercom during morning announcements twice or more each school week, and backed up by a common culture which reinforces the principles taught, at every turn, and incorporates the phrases of the academic language during any teachable moment. These two sets of stories work together to convey a common academic language which says, “A bully is a person who hurts others on purpose (even if it's just hurting their feelings) but a HERO is a person who HELPS others. So CHOOSE to be a HERO by HELPING instead of... Support this podcast
The term ‘inspirational' can be overused when it comes to describing public figures. But in the case of today's guest, it couldn't be more fitting. Ramla Ali is a professional sportswoman who became the first-ever boxer to compete for Somalia in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Her incredible story is told in her new book Not Without A Fight: Ten Steps To Becoming Your Own Champion, and I'm honoured to hear it from her first hand.Ramla is a former refugee whose family fled from Somalia to Kenya after the civil war. After settling in the UK, she describes a pivotal moment in her teenage years when she was attacked by a group of boys for wearing a hijab. This, together with advice from her GP that she was obese, proved an incentive for Ramla to begin boxing. But it was a secret she kept hidden from her traditional, religious family. We talk about the range of feelings these events gave rise to, sharing our thoughts on the immigrant experience, and on being the subject of parental disapproval as well as pride. And we discuss Ramla's journey to the Olympics and how much the African experience differs to that of Western athletes. Until she found sponsorship, modelling helped to pay Ramla's way in sport. Yet she talks with touching honesty about struggles with confidence, self-esteem and finding her identity as a Somali woman in the public eye. Today, Ramla's confidence comes from the knowledge she has achieved all this against the odds – and that her fight helps women and girls of all backgrounds, races and religions to be seen. She's giving back not just through this platform and as a Unicef Ambassador, but through her Sisters Club, a free boxing club that provides a safe space for women in London to access the sport. Ramla is a true role model and living proof that we can all be our own champions. Martin Bell, is a British UNICEF Ambassador, a former broadcast war reporter and former independent politician who became the Member of Parliament for Tatton from 1997 to 2001. He is known throughout the UK as "the man in the white suit". Martin is someone I've wished to interview for a number years, someone who unbeknownst to him has influenced my own political thinking. Martin is the true example of an Independent politician, we discuss his own journey. From working for the BBC in some of the worlds worst conflicts and his learnings from those days, to his dramatic entry into British politics and taking the safe Conservative seat of Tatton in dramatic fashion. Hear the background of how 24 days before the 1997 Election both the Liberal Democrats and Labour stood aside for Martin. Hear reflections of how he was received and his own personal achievements. We also discuss how Journalism in the UK now does a disservice to reporting, especially on the plight of many in places such as sub-Saharan Africa. Martin now uses his platform as a UNICEF Ambassador and raises funds to tackle the victims of War and Conflict around the world. A truly remarkable man!

Sue Matthewsâ??a CPA, wife, and mother of threeâ??was living a normal life fifteen years ago until the day came when her middle child, daughter Taylor, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of eleven. In her forthcoming book, Paint Your Hair Blue (Morgan James, June 2018), Matthews and her sister Andrea Cohane take you through the heartwarming tale of heroic courage and devastating blows that characterized Taylor's odyssey through the underfunded world of pediatric cancer. It is an inspiring story of the power of love and determination, as well as a cautionary tale that provides support and specific advice for other parents confronting cancer and for anyone going through a cancer diagnosis, or caring for someone who is. Please let me know if you would like to interview the authors or a review copy of the book. Sue and Andrea are available to discuss: · Life lessons gleaned from Taylorâ??s battle with cancer. · How a family continued to experience life and have fun, sometimes thumbing their noses at the medical world, so that their daughter could live as a kid with cancer, rather than a â??cancer kid.â?? · How a mother and father divided and conquered responsibilities, creating a synergistic team to help their daughter beat the odds. · How a mom was able to stay strong while her daughter remained in the hospital for five weeks following a 14-hour surgery to save her life. · Advice for parents and family members who are navigating the world of pediatric oncology. · What can be done to fund pediatric cancer and greatly improve access to adult treatments for children. · How the Taylor Matthews Foundation (TMF) has raised $1.4 million and funded research at several leading institutions, including Memorial Sloan Kettering, The National Institute of Health, Childrenâ??s Hospital at Columbia University Medical Center and MD Anderson Cancer Center. Praise for the book: â??A triumph of the human spirit! This book will make you laugh and cry as you cheer Taylor on in her fight against childhood cancer.â?? -JEFF GORDON, Founder of Jeff Gordon's Children Foundation; Retired NASCAR Champion â??A heartbreaking yet heartwarming story of how Taylor and her family navigated pediatric cancer with love, laughter, and tears. Beautifully written, it feels as if youâ??re going through the journey with Taylor and her family. Paint Your Hair Blue will make you hug your children tighter and fight harder to find a cure for pediatric cancer.â?? -ANGIE HARMON, Mother, Actress, Director, UNICEF Ambassador

I'm sure those of you that came up in the '90's know all about this! Poor, poor Lark Voorhies...so fine, but yet so troubled! Former "Saved by the Bell" star is divorcing her so-called, gangbanger husband. She drops some stuff on Instagam that wasn't too nice. Check out verbatim what she said! Pop star "Pink" is now the UNICEF Ambassador. Congrats to her for doing this. She's always been a big advocate for children. Did ya'll happen to see the "2015 Soul Train Awards"? A tribute was done for Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, and Fantasia came out to sing one of the songs that he wrote for '80's/'90's singer "Karen White". The problem was, no one told Karen about it? Check out what the crew has to say about this one! KING Cyrus has also been more vocal lately. He has some game to share on these topics as well. But as usual, he kept us in pocket to keep you turned up! Until next week...
Roger Moore, Actor and UNICEF Ambassador “I've always said if you've nothing nice to say about someone, then you should say nothing.” When you trash somebody, what actual good does it do? There is an effect, but what does it tell others about that person? Better yet, what does it tell others about you? Imagine if you will, that what you are telling is the exact, and honest truth. There is absolutely no chance that what you are telling is in anyway of dubious origin. That established, there are times when you may want to tell someone something negative. An example. If you have personal knowledge that a certain young man is a habitual date rapist and you see him getting interested in your friend’s daughter, this would be an excellent time to inform your friend of the danger. If on the other hand, you don’t like the way this young man dresses or you don’t like his attitude, or his piercings, tattoos or even his bow tie, looking at your friend and saying, “I’ll bet he’s a date rapist. You can tell by looking at him.” All you are doing is letting your biases and prejudices make huge leaps in what you are thinking. Find out the facts before you speak, and sometimes don’t even speak then. A real life example: When my daughter was in school there was a boy who made some unwelcome and shocking comments about what he wanted to do to her. He got in trouble for it and the situation was taken care of through the appropriate channels. A few months later, the principal approached me and told me of an incident of exactly the same nature involving the same boy. He was shocked by my first question. “Is this a new incident, or is it just recycled gossip?” His experience with fathers was that normally the death of the boy in questions would be imminent if the father was allowed to go and do what he felt like doing. My first inclination was find out if this was actually factual, or just the old story making the rounds again. I explained that if he was going along and being honorable and they came down on him again when he had done nothing, it could create a condition where he would begin to believe that there was no benefit at all in correct behavior, and he would revert and become worse than before. Once we knew the truth of it, action could be taken, or not, according to the outcome. It turned out to be a recycled rumor told by someone who wanted something to shock her friends with. The boy never knew what had happened as far as I know. It was best that way. I don’t know how his life turned out, but I know at least I didn’t contribute to his downfall if he indeed ever had one. Elvis said to me, "You don't want to stay here. This is not a town you should be in." And I don't think if that would've come from anybody but Elvis, I would've done it.” We have to be selective when we take advice. There are basically three criteria we should consider before doing so. 1. Do you trust this person? A basic trust is necessary to even begin to consider taking advice. How long have you known them? Have they ever lied to you or have they taken advantage of you? Many who are so called friends are those users that are trying to get all they can. They will treat you well until there is some advantage they can gain by tossing you over the side. Make sure this is a real friend. 2. What will that person stand to gain if you follow their advice? This is a back up check on the trust issue. If they will gain an enormous amount of advantage, money or fame because of your actions, you had better give point number one a closer look. Sometimes your welfare and theirs can coincide, but if the biggest advantage is theirs, look a little deeper. 3. Does this person know anything about the area they are advising you on? After the first two are all taken care of and you are sure there is no reason for the person to deceive you, you may realize that, in spite of being totally trustworthy, they have absolutely no idea what is going on in the subject area under discussion. Some well meaning people will give you an answer just to feel smart. They probably don’t mean you ill, they just need to feel important. All this investigation can be completed in a second or two if you know your friends well. Advice is a valuable commodity. The easiest way to get a regular supply of good advice is to surround yourself with people you like and respect. It doesn’t hurt at all for them to be diverse as well, since diversity brings different experiences that work well for the entire group to learn and benefit from. Humans are really good at learning from the experiences of others, but unfortunately, many are not inclined to do so. The quality of advice many times comes down to the quality of the friend who is giving it. Please don’t surround yourself with users. And don’t be a user yourself. There is no reason we have to know everything when there are so many of us around to share knowledge. It works so much better that way. When Ishmael Beah’s A Long Way Gone was published in 2007, it soared to the top of bestseller lists, becoming an instant classic: a harrowing account of Sierra Leone’s civil war and the fate of child soldiers that “everyone in the world should read” (The Washington Post). Beah’s first novel, Radiance of Tomorrow, is a tender parable about postwar life in Sierra Leone. It features Benjamin and Bockarie, two longtime friends who return to their hometown after the civil war. They try to forge a new community by taking up their former posts as teachers, but they’re beset by obstacles. Radiance of Tomorrow is a powerful novel about preserving what means the most to us, even in uncertain times.Ishmael Beah is a UNICEF Ambassador and advocate for Children Affected by War; a member of the Human Rights Watch Children’s Advisory Committee; visiting senior research fellow at the Center for the Study of Genocide, Conflict Resolution and Human Rights, Rutgers University; and president of The Ishmael Beah Foundation.Writers LIVE programs are supported in part by a generous grant from PNC Bank.
