Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Canadian social worker Joy Frenkiel can't get two particular sounds out of her head: IDF soldiers hammering wood to build coffins, and the motors of refrigerated containers storing hundreds of still-unidentified bodies at an Israeli military base. Frenkiel moved to Israel from Chomedey, north of Montreal, in 1996; since the horrific murders of at least 1,300 Israelis and foreign nationals earlier this month by Hamas, the Ramat Gan resident has been helping bereaved families go through what is likely the hardest experience of their lives. Frenkiel not only travels with military teams on solemn home visits to break the news to next of kin—she also supports grieving parents, spouses and other relatives when they go in-person to the morgue at the Shura military base at Ramla to officially identify the remains. For Frenkiel, the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, seeing the condition of many of the bodies has been almost beyond description. But, as she tells The CJN Daily‘s host Ellin Bessner in the third episode of our series on “The Helpers” in this war, Frenkiel is honouring those who were murdered to fulfill the mitzvah of giving kindness during the darkest period of Israel's modern history. Ramla didn't stop there. She quit her job at a law firm to become a full-time professional boxer, crushing opponents twice her size with her sleek jab and expert head movement. But she didn't let her success get to her head. Ramla founded the Sisters Club, a safe space for women, including survivors of sexual abuse, to train and build a community.

Ramla Ali doesn't know when her birthday is. Born in Somalia, she and her family became refugees after fleeing during the country's civil war in the early 1990s, leaving all important documents behind. Ali grew up in London where she developed a love for boxing - and she got really, really good at it. Eventually, Ali became the first Somalian woman to box at the Olympics…and outside of the ring, Ali became a model and humanitarian, founding a women's boxing club that exploded in popularity around London. This Saturday, Ali is attempting to make history, where she'd be one of the first women to box professionally in Saudi Arabia. Michael Rothstein shares how Ramla Ali got here, and how she's already made history. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

23 February 2022 This webinar explores the history, archaeology and architecture of this historic city, located in central Israel. Ramla is significant because it was the only new city founded by the Muslim Arabs within Palestine and for a short period functioned as capital. From the eighth to the tenth century Ramla grew to be the most populous city in Palestine extending over a vast area with different quarters for Jews, Christians and Muslims. However, by the end of the eleventh century the city had fallen into decline and when the Crusaders arrived, much of the city was uninhabited. After the expulsion of the Crusaders, the city was rebuilt both as a staging post on the trade route between Cairo and Damascus and also the principal stop-over for Christian pilgrims travelling from Jaffa to Jerusalem. After the creation of Israel in 1948 the city once more fell into decline- a transition which has been captured in the best-selling book The Lemon Tree by Sandy Tolan. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ About the speaker: Andrew Petersen is Director of Research in Islamic Archaeology at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. Last May in Israel, the streets of Arab and shared cities were ablaze. The fabric of shared life in Israel was under an attack, fueled by extremists, locally and nationally. Indeed, most Israelis — Arab and Jewish — oppose the raging violence, as the entwined reality of life is stronger than these destructive forces. Nevertheless, the damage was overwhelming. The wave of anger and violence that swept the country indicates the crucial importance of public action and community organizing, and its urgence in places where it is absent. It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness, said Eleanor Roosvelt. Some people who share this vision are creating a new opportunity for both Jewish and Arab societies living together to set a new path of common life. The Tzedek Centers are working to open many centers across the country, home to any gender, ethnic group or socioeconomic status. For them, establishing centers in Arab and shared cities is an acute and primary goal. Arab and Jewish activists work together at their center in Haifa, and the new center has just opened at Ramla, and is set to be followed by Acre, Jaffa, Lod and Nazareth. I am glad to host Amit Ben Ami, Ahlam Kasim Ali & Lev Littman, of Ajyal & Tzedek Centers to discuss what happened and how we can create an Arab-Jewish alliance, and empower the Arab society in Israel from bottom to top, so that the voice calling for peace, equality and solidarity will be heard. https://merkazim.org/en/  #Israel #Israeliarabs #JewsandArabas

[TW: discussion around suicide] This week's guest, Ramla Ali, is the first Somali boxer ever to compete at the Olympic Games. Ramla was born in Mogadishu, shortly before the outbreak of a brutal civil war. After her eldest brother was killed by a grenade while playing in the garden, the family embarked on a perilous journey to leave - first to Kenya, where they survived on Unicef food rations, and later to the UK where they claimed asylum.  In London, Ramla first took up boxing to lose weight while a teenager, and tried to keep it a secret from her Muslim relatives. But her love of boxing was stronger than any family disapproval, and she kept at it, winning her first fight in 2011.  Since then she's graduated with a First in Law from SOAS University in London, become an Elle covergirl (she models part-time to make enough money to support her boxing career) and written her first book: Not Without A Fight, which is out tomorrow. Ramla joins me to talk about her failures as a bullied teenager at school, her failure to win an Olympic medal and her failure to be there for her best friend Danika when she was going through severe mental health issues. It's a brave and honest discussion that reflects Ramla's courage in the ring as well as out of it. -- Not Without A Fight: Ten Steps to Becoming Your Own Champion by Ramla Ali is out tomorrow and available to preorder here. -- My new novel, Magpie, is out now. The term ‘inspirational' can be overused when it comes to describing public figures. But in the case of today's guest, it couldn't be more fitting. Ramla Ali is a professional sportswoman who became the first-ever boxer to compete for Somalia in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Her incredible story is told in her new book Not Without A Fight: Ten Steps To Becoming Your Own Champion, and I'm honoured to hear it from her first hand.Ramla is a former refugee whose family fled from Somalia to Kenya after the civil war. After settling in the UK, she describes a pivotal moment in her teenage years when she was attacked by a group of boys for wearing a hijab. This, together with advice from her GP that she was obese, proved an incentive for Ramla to begin boxing. But it was a secret she kept hidden from her traditional, religious family. We talk about the range of feelings these events gave rise to, sharing our thoughts on the immigrant experience, and on being the subject of parental disapproval as well as pride. And we discuss Ramla's journey to the Olympics and how much the African experience differs to that of Western athletes. Until she found sponsorship, modelling helped to pay Ramla's way in sport. Yet she talks with touching honesty about struggles with confidence, self-esteem and finding her identity as a Somali woman in the public eye. Today, Ramla's confidence comes from the knowledge she has achieved all this against the odds – and that her fight helps women and girls of all backgrounds, races and religions to be seen. She's giving back not just through this platform and as a Unicef Ambassador, but through her Sisters Club, a free boxing club that provides a safe space for women in London to access the sport. Ramla is a true role model and living proof that we can all be our own champions. I really think you are going to enjoy listening. Thanks to our sponsors:https://www.vivobarefoot.com/uk/livemorehttps://www.blublox.com/livemorehttp://www.athleticgreens.com/livemoreShow notes available at https://drchatterjee.com/202Support the podcast: Members get ad-free episodes and exclusive content including my take on the topics most requested by the FBLM community https://drchatterjee.com/membershipFollow me on instagram.com/drchatterjee/Follow me on facebook.com/DrChatterjee/Follow me on twitter.com/drchatterjeeukDISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Dr. Ramla Kasozi is a board certified family medicine physician and advocate. Having lived in three different parts of the world (Canada, Uganda, and USA) and worked in the health sector in two different countries (Uganda and USA), Dr. Kasozi has had the privilege of seeing healthcare in different settings. As a former refugee child, she recalls the many frustrations and disappointments her parents had experienced while navigating the health care system. Dr. Kasozi's keen interest in refugee health has been life long with particular interest in tackling health disparities through health equity initiatives. Working as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Global Complex Humanitarian Emergencies (CHE) Fellow at Emory University's Center for Humanitarian Emergencies, Dr. Kasozi conducted research with the Emergency Response and Recovery Branch (ERRB) on refugee health and participated in projects to offer primary healthcare to the uninsured, refugee population in Atlanta. As a former refugee, it was such an honor for Dr. Kasozi to give back and help the migrant refugee population in the community. Consequently, her experience at Emory has given her working knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research.    Witnessing the impact of racial bias and the various microaggressions her parents experienced as Ugandan refugees, really sparked her interest in becoming a doctor. Dr. Kasozi completed her Family Medicine Residency at the University of Minnesota's St. John's Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program. During her residency training, she was involved in scholarly and community work addressing health equity and race-based medicine. As a Board-Certified Family Medicine Physician, Dr. Kasozi plans on continuing her scholarly work in improving medical education to be more relevant to communities. She practices full-scope Family Medicine while also working in academic medicine. She plans on bridging comprehensive clinical care with community public health in an effort to reduce health disparities by creating community-oriented primary health care initiatives. In the long-term, Dr. Kasozi hopes to pursue translational research and establish domestic and global health collaborations dealing with refugee health.

Es ist wieder so weit. An diesem geschichtsträchtigen 2. Ach, keine Ahnung. Hört einfach selbst!

David Ben Gurion announced Israel's independence on May 14, 1948—73 years ago today. (Although this year the event was marked in April, according to the Hebrew calendar.) The anniversary comes as Israel is in an eerily familiar situation, heading into another weekend with Arab fighters launching a barrage of rockets from Gaza. Meanwhile, violence between Jews, Palestinians and Israeli Arabs has broken out across Jerusalem, Acco, Lod and Ramla and elsewhere. While Canadian Jews prepare to observe the religious festival of Shavuout on Monday, which marks the giving of the Torah to Moses on Mount Sinai, Israelis are seeking shelter in safe rooms and bunkers. In this episode of The CJN Daily, we're joined by David Matlow, a Canadian who has amassed the world's largest collection of Theodor Herzl memorabilia and Zionism artifacts. In the second part of this virtual bus tour we will learn about Abu Ghosh, also called the 'humus capital' and named after the Abu Ghosh family that originates from the Caucasus. There are two important churches in Abu Ghosh, one connected to the Bible story of the Ark of the Covenant that stayed in Kiriyat Jearim for 20 years. The other one connected to the Bible story of the two people that walked to Emmaus and met Jesus after his crucifixion and resurrection. The town also has the second largest mosque in Palestine. Then we continue to Lod, the city that had one of the oldest first airports in Palestine, the Lod airport was later named Ben Gurion airport. Lod is famous for the resting place of Saint George, known in Palestine also as Al Khader. An interesting mix of Christian and Muslim traditions. Many Palestinians are named George and Khader. Lod was the capital of Jund Falastin, one of the provinces under the Muslim dynasties. But it had to give this title to Ramla when it was built by Suleiman ibn AbdelMalik who built a city in the sandy coastal area, where nobody had settled before, hence the name Ramle, meaning 'sand' in Arabic.

In this briefing at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, Dr. Mordechai Kedar explores the effects that radical Islamic groups have had on Arab-Israeli relations, with the Akko Riots as a case study. He explains how in the mixed city of Acre in October 2008, a car driven by an Arab went into a Jewish neighborhood on the night of Yom Kippur. This triggered five days of violence, demonstrations, breaking into shops, and burning apartments and houses. At the time of the riots, Islamic Jihad and Hamas called on the Arabs in Israel to do the same thing in all the other mixed cities like Jaffa, Ramla and Lod. They tried to inflame the whole situation, but it didn't work. The calls to spread the riots to other places in Israel were not answered. Why didn't the riots spread to other cities? Because at the end of the day, both Jews and Arabs realize that coexistence is better than fighting.
