Uptown FUNK When you think Jamaican rum, you think funk. Funny thing is, most Jamaican rum by both volume and number of distillers is not funky. BTW - funky is the unscientific way of saying ester content. All those fruity, dark, tropical, funky notes are esters, the interactions and transformations of acids and alcohols and aldehydes into the familiar flavor compounds we love. Hampden Estate, however, is the funkiest of them all. Originally built in 1753, Hampden has been producing Trelawney-style rum (named for its province in Jamaica) continuously for closer to three centuries than two. For nearly that entire history, though, they produced rum and rum extracts for other bottlers, lending their flavors to everything from blended rum to confectionary to perfumes. Had rum cake? Hampden. Rum-flavored anything? Chances are, Hampden. After the Hussey family bought Hampden in 2009, they made the massive decision to bottle their own rum for the first time. Most of their production is still dedicated to blends and rectifiers - they're phasing out independent bottlers - and the results so far have been spectacular. In 2023, they gave the rum world a love letter with their 8 Marks Collection, to be repeated in 2024. Nerdiness abounds, with everything you could want to know about every mark in the Hampden lineup. This was a hell of an episode, and I can't wait to do the follow-up.
In this episode, we went deep on the eight marks of Jamaica's Hampden Estate and the making of the recently released 8 Marks Collection with Peppie Grant (Tour Manager at Hampden), Daniele Biondi (Export Manager at La Maison & Velier), and Howard McCalla (Production Manager at Hampden).Speaking with people from both Hampden and La Maison & Velier allowed us to get the full story behind the 8 Marks Collection, from the rum itself to how the release came together in the first place. We discussed:How the idea for the 8 Marks Collection came aboutChallenges in creating a unique product like thisThe best ways to taste through Hampden's marksHow to approach blending marks togetherWhy higher ester level does not automatically make a rum more complexWhat exactly is cane juice vinegar?Whether certain marks are only made on certain stills or notHampden's rumored 3,000 (or even 7,000!) ester level rumsWhy Jamaica limits ester levels in rumThe perils of the "high ester" descriptorThe upcoming aged version of the 8 Marks CollectionHampden's futureAnd much more!P.S.
At long last, we speak to our first rum producer from Réunion Island! In this episode, we welcomed Marie Ferrand (Cellar Master) and Yann Auberval (Director of Marketing) to take us inside Isautier Distillery's traditions of both cane juice and molasses-based rums. We discuss:The differences between the rhum agricoles of the Caribbean and RéunionWhy Isautier has long focused on both rhum agricole and rhum traditionnel (molasses-based rum)The approach to aging that contributes to the rum's unique profileHow the recent partnership with La Maison & Velier came aboutThe differences between the LM&V bottlings and Isautier's typical releasesMarie's philosophy on rum blendingA walkthrough of their production process (and some experiments they're currently working on)The story behind Rhum Charrette — the best-selling rum on Réunion that features distillate from all of the island's distilleriesAnd much more! You can learn more about Isautier on their website: https://www.isautier.com/en/This episode is sponsored by independent bottler Raising Glasses.

LFE was lucky enough to catch Johann Jobello, Rum Product Manager for La Maison & Velier, while he was in town briefly to debut an incredible assortment of products to the Twin Cities. Johann is an absolute force in his sprawling knowledge of rum distilling, and came heavily equipped with an absolute onslaught of goodies from the Transcontinental Rum Line, Papalin and Hampden families of rum (and friends Kate Perry of La Maison & Velier, and Jon Olson of Libation Project!) to share with Ben & Charles, as they discussed each of those offerings, in addition to recommendations of food and beverages to seek out in the Caribbean, what other locales can impart from French craftsmanship, favorite off the radar rum cocktails, friendliest cities to travel to, and more. In this episode, we sat down with Steffen Mayer, who spent the last five years writing the ultimate book on Caroni (Caroni: 100% Trinidad Rum). Caroni, of course, is the legendary Trinidad distillery that closed around 2003, leaving behind a cache of aged rum that subsequently became some of the most sought-after rum in the world after bottlers like Velier built up its legend. And that's before getting to the rum's entirely unique flavor profile.Steffen took us through his journey of writing the book and shared insight after insight that he learned from the 100+ interviews he conducted, including:Why Caroni closedThe truth about Caroni using Jamaican rum in some of their blendsWhich distilleries around the world have used Caroni rum in their blendsWhy the value of Caroni's aged rum was so heavily disputed following its closureCaroni's use of neutral spirit in its blendsThe differences in Caroni's rum marks (and which ones are more worth seeking out)Where Caroni's "dirty" notes come fromThe most memorable interviews and tasting sessions he had while writing the bookAnd much more! Here are links to some of the retailers carrying Steffen's book:https://www.spiritacademy.it/en/libri/caroni-book-100-trinidad-rum-5030.htmlhttps://www.whisky.fr/en/steffen-mayer-caroni-100-trinidad-rum.htmlhttps://www.armagnac.de/products/caroni-bookhttps://www.whiskyboeken.nl/en_GB/a-72158467/library/steffen-mayer-caroni-100-trinidad-rum/https://www.whiskytempel.de/shop/caroni-100-trinidad-rum-volumne-1-2-book-by-steffen-mayer.htmlP.S. In this episode, we caught up with Kate Perry and Johann Jobello of La Maison & Velier to learn about Arhumatic—a French brand that's quite different from anything else in the LM&V portfolio. Arhumatic specializes in rhum arrangé, a traditional preparation of rum in islands with French ties like Réunion, Martinique, and Guadeloupe. Rhum arrangé involves macerating rum (either rhum agricole or molasses-based rum, depending on the island) in fresh fruits and/or botanicals, typically for months at a time. While commercial brands are common in France, Arhumatic is possibly the first to become available in the United States. In the interview we discuss...The history and origins of rhum arrangéHow rhum arrangé varies between the French Caribbean and RéunionHow Arhumatic produces their rhum arrangé and develops new ideasThe perils of the term "flavored rum" (and why it doesn't feel fitting for products like this)Why La Maison & Velier decided to partner with a brand that's so different from the rest of their rum portfolioHow Arhumatic going beyond rhum agricole in their rhum arrangés with Jamaican rum, clairin, and moreThe challenges of bringing unfamiliar types of rum to new placesThe best ways to use rhum arrangéAnd more!Additional Resources on Arhumatic:Arhumatic websiteP.S. Over the last few years, Knud has worked closely with founder Robert Greaves to guide Mhoba's development, bring the rum to new markets, and get it on the radar of rum enthusiasts around the world. If you've been exploring the rum world, you may have heard of how incredibly different Haitian rum is, Clairin specifically, the name for the native rum of Haiti. That being said, we felt Clairin was more akin to mezcal and other agave spirits, with over 500 micro distilleries operating on the island creating a wildly unique local spirit that remains relatively unexplored in the world of cane distillate. Natural, uncut, unfiltered and different from everything you've ever had before, it's time to explore the world of Clairin with one of the most knowledgeable rum experts we've ever encountered: Kate Perry from La Maison & Velier. Kate Perry grew up in Maine, and earned degrees in Anthropology/Archaeology & Geography/Geology from the University of Denver. She was invited to Haiti with the Velier spirits company, where she fell in love with Haiti and fell in love with Velier. After returning to the states, she moved to NYC to work for Velier, the Indiana Jones of rum -- so she's using her degrees and still drinking a lot of rum. The Speakeasy is powered by Simplecast
