The Last Vladimir Konstantinov Interview June 11, 1997

As far as I know, this is the last longform interview with Vladimir Konstatntinov before the limo accident on Friday June 13th, 1997. Many outside the Motor City are unfamiliar with or too young to remember the timeline, but the Detroit Red Wings had just ended a 42 year title drought by winning the Stanley Cup Finals vs. Philadelphia on Saturday June 7th. On Tuesday June 10th the city held a Stanley Cup parade that was attended by 1.3 million people of which I was one. The next day, Wednesday June 11th I conducted this interview with Vlady on 102-7 The Bear. I'd actually forgotten that I even did this interview after the subsequent events overshadowed the joy of winning the Cup. Upon hearing it again after 25 years I cried hearing Vlady talk about enjoying his upcoming summer with his wife and daughter with the weight of knowing all their lives would be changed a mere two days later. Imagine your favorite team wins a championship only to have some of its stars critically injured less than a week after winning the title. I remember hearing a young fan of 8 or 9 years call a local radio station to express that he'd gladly give the championship back if only his heroes could be healthy again...When I found this audio, I knew I had to share it but that I'd also have to write something that at least began to articulate how profound the experience was for me personally and to try and properly express the community-wide grief felt by the people of Detroit at the time and how everyone was affected by the limo accident. Red Wings fans camped out at the hospital. It dominated the news cycle all summer when a collective celebration would have if the accident hadn't happened.

Goldschmidt, Dickerson and Tommy Edman collected three hits apiece as the NL Central-leading Cardinals won for the 10th time in their last 12 games. The Cubs lost for the fourth time in six games. The Cardinals collected 16 hits. Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina did not play but were presented with scoreboard panels before their last game at Wrigley Field. Orioles 4, White Sox 3 – F/11 – Stowers’ HR in 9th ties it, Orioles top White Sox 4-3 in 11         Kyle Stowers hit his first major league homer to tie the game with Baltimore down to its last strike, and the Orioles ended up beating the Chicago White Sox 4-3 in 11 innings. Anthony Santander won it with an RBI single. But it was Stowers who saved the game for Baltimore in the ninth. The 24-year-old outfielder sent an 0-2 pitch from Liam Hendriks over the wall in right-center field. Hendriks had converted 19 save chances in a row before that. Rodriguez made an immediate impression on the coaching staff back in May. Linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard called Rodriguez one of the smartest young players he’s ever been around. Rodriguez’s star has only risen since. Though he started training camp with the second and third-team defenses, by last week’s joint practices with the Indianapolis Colts, the majority of his reps were coming with the starters. NFL – Bears guard Teven Jenkins looks to secure starting role Teven Jenkins has gone from left tackle to right tackle backup to rumors that he’s being traded. Now he’s playing right guard for the Chicago Bears with hopes of securing a starting spot. The Bears face the Browns this weekend in Cleveland in their preseason finale. Jenkins says he still can’t be sure if he’ll be traded, though it will be the second straight start for the team’s 2021 second-round draft pick. The Oklahoma State product has replaced veteran Michael Schofield at right guard. Jenkins, quarterback Justin Fields and starters will play a half in Saturday’s game. NCAAFB – College Football – Week 1 – Big Ten Saturday Nebraska vs. Northwestern, 12:30 p.m.                   at Dublin Ireland Wyoming at Illinois, 4:00 p.m. NCAA – Supreme Court paved way for shifting college TV landscape The Big Ten sent shockwaves in late June with the additions of Southern California and UCLA in 2024. That led to last week’s announcement of a seven-year rights deal with Fox, NBC and CBS that will see the conference receiving at least $1 billion a year. In 2020, the SEC sold the second package of football and basketball to the Walt Disney Company, making ESPN/ABC the home of SEC Football. The 10-year deal, starting in 2024, is worth at least $3 billion and is an addition to the original 20-year, $2.25-billion agreement that began in 2014. The increased revenues led to the additions of Texas and Oklahoma in 2025. NHL – Long-term victims of car crashes win key Michigan decision The Michigan appeals court has issued a major ruling affecting long-term victims of car crashes. The court says changes in auto insurance law can’t be applied retroactively to people who were severely injured before summer 2019. It’s a victory for people who are still recovering and their care providers. For decades, people injured in crashes were entitled to payment for “all reasonable charges” related to care and rehabilitation. But the new law sets a fee schedule and a cap on reimbursements not covered by Medicare. It had sudden, drastic consequences for people needing long-term care for crashes before June 11, 2019, and the providers of those services.  Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov was among the people who could have lost that care.  Konstantinov was critically injured in a limousine accident days after the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup in 1997.  Tennis – US Open – Unvaccinated Djokovic out of US Open; can’t travel to States Novak Djokovic will not play in the U.S. Open, as expected, because he is not vaccinated against COVID-19 and thus is not allowed to travel to the United States. Djokovic has won the U.S. Open three times and was the runner-up last year. He has 21 major titles. Play is scheduled to begin at Flushing Meadows on Monday. Golf – PGA – Scheffler starts with Tour Championship lead and expands it Masters champion Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy can each claim a roller coaster day in the Tour Championship. Only one of them was aware of it. Scheffler started with a two-shot lead as the No. 1 seed in the FedEx Cup. He led by six, it was down to two and he finished five ahead of Xander Schauffele. He wasn’t aware of this because he wasn’t looking at leaderboards. Scheffler had a 65. McIlroy knew full well what he was doing. He his his opening shot out-of-bounds for triple bogey. Djokovic announced his withdrawal from the year’s last Grand Slam tournament on Twitter on Thursday, hours before the draw for the event was revealed. He made only four pars and salvaged a 67. Jeff hasn't seen the trailer yet and attempts to watch it but has to stop 15 seconds in as he starts to tear up. The two make a surprise phone call to Jeff's lifelong buddy Mike who breaks down the playoffs and compares it to NHL players of the past and why he hates the Western Conference Finals. If you are a Detroit Red Wings fan, then this edition of the We Live Hockey Podcast is a must listen. Heck, I'm not even a Red Wings fan and I enjoyed the heck out of this particular podcast. In this very special and unique podcast, Lee and Travis interview Joshua Riehl and Jenny Feterovich, the producers of The Russian Five. Wings' fans, you know who these guys are as they all made a significant impact to your team. For those that may be too young to remember who these guys were, they were Vladimir Konstantinov, Sergei Fedorov, Slava Fetisov, Igor Larionov, and Slava Kozlov. If you ask me, these five ov's were dominant for the Wings for several seasons. In listening to the podcast, you will learn the following just like I did: - Both Lee and Travis are Flyer fans. Unfortunately for them, the Russian Five and the rest of their Wings' teammates swept their club in the 1997 Cup Final in route to their first Cup in 42 years. Sorry guys! - While Lee is a Flyer fan, he does tell us how he came to appreciate the Russian Five. Lee mentions that they did a lot for the game, especially in terms of how they showed the rest of the league that players from other countries could work together with the rest of their teammates to accomplish the ultimate goal. For me at least, this is a very interesting point because it really set the tone for clubs bringing in more Russians and other Europeans to their respective hockey clubs and helping to make the sport more inclusive. - As the podcast began, we learned that Jenny came from the Soviet Union and like the Russian Five, ended up coming over to North America for a better life. - Speaking of having a better life, Jenny and Joshua spoke about how rigid the Russian Five's lives were over in Russia. Could you imagine life being so bad in your country that you feel the need to get out and do so under the radar? I can't! - Joshua told us how his love for the Red Wings and the way their Russians played drew him to the game and make him turn away from baseball. You made the right choice, Joshua. Thank you, Russians! - If you're a Wings' fan or even a die hard hockey fan, than you probably remember the horrific limo accident that Konstantinov, team masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov, and driver Richard Gnida got into just a few nights after the team won the Cup. It made Joshua realize just how fragile life was and that despite everything that happened on that awful night, these guys persevered in the biggest way. - As someone who is not a Red Wings fan, I did not know how much Wings' fans loved Konstantiov. Joshua mentioned that while fans loved their captain in Stevie Yzerman as well as the "perfect person" Nicklas Lidstrom, they really, really loved what Konstantinov brought to the table every night. - It was interesting to hear how much Joshua and Jenny risked to do this. It cost a lot of money to make, it was hard to conduct the interviews because of heavy government interference in Moscow, but you'll have to listen to hear more about this (Hint: 23:43 into the podcast) - In listening to this podcast, I really appreciated just how much effort and passion Joshua and Jennifer put in to get this documentary done. These two believed in the story and wanted to convey to everyone, not just hockey fans, how important the Russian Five were to both the hockey world and sports world in general.
