On this episode: We have a special guest from our sister podcast, Nikki of the “Psychology of the Hustle Podcast” (Link Below). We had an in depth discussion about the legacy of trauma many former soldiers face, tragically denoted by an Army vet's murder suicide in Georgia. A police officer claims she was desensitized to the “N” word by rap music and therefore shouldn't be held accountable for using it on her body cam. In Greece, a young man lost his head taking a selfie by a helicopter. Kevin Hart had an interesting conversation, bought a goat for Chris Rock, and Will Smith finally apologized to Chris audibly. A young lady auctioned off her Nigerian husband. Money's in Japan are running rampant, snatching up toddlers, and choosing violence. We dissected a list of the top 10 diss songs of all time, then observed a few block or charge calls in an apartment weight room and on a Hong Kong stage. Show Prolog:Brothers Breaking Bread, or the “Triple B Pod”, is a collection of African American professionals, friends, and family that attempt to tackle the important issues of the day. We bring our unique brand of humor, sensitivity, and oftentimes anger to the analysis. The show features Rodger (@KcStork); “The Brothers of Doom” James and Joe; Anthony (10 Meters); Zeb (Da Soulja) Ada (Lady Lavender) Adrian (Slim AC) Kim (Ms. Honey Bunz) and extended #3BPod family. Shirley Hogsett is the Founder and CEO of Destiny Speaks, and she shares a number of gems in this podcast episode.  She has a wealth of experience.  Shirley is the youngest of 10 children born to a butcher and seamstress in Goodman, Mississippi.  It was there that the importance of a tight knit family and a solid extended community was instilled in her.  She and her family were diligent about service to God and to others, and it was through the vehicle of church that this philosophy was practiced.  Additionally, the family would visit other churches in order to be in fellowship and service outside their environs. Her parents had a staunch work ethic and were entrepreneurs before they even understood the word.  In addition to his full time job, Shirley's father was a jack of all trades -- carpentry, repairs, etc.  Her. mother was a very talented seamstress.  These "side hustles" brought  in extra income, but this showed how you could be multi-talented and multi-skilled and make money. Even the words of a mentor still resonate today -- "You are in business to solve a problem." Shirley shares that growing up reading was her greatest joy, and when the family started getting issues of Black Enterprise Magazine this was the highlight of her month.  She was amazed by reading about the phenomenal things that countless Black people were accomplishing in business.  Shirley has held some very interesting positions prior to starting Destiny Speaks. In one of them, she had a career in Professional Events and Meeting Planning, which laid the foundation for the very thing she is doing currently.  One of the responsibilities she had in this role was to identify speakers for these events; one of the things she noticed was that some of the very best speakers were not getting paid. Out of this revelation, Destiny Speaks was born. In working with Destiny Speaks clients, Shirley assists emerging speakers with honing in on their expertise and their passion, which ultimately leads them to targeting the organizations that have audiences that want and need to hear their messages. Additionally, other services are provided -- creation of the client's bio and marketing strategies.  Shirley, who formerly served  as an Empowerment Director and Chicago Chapter Leader for EBW2020, is now serving on the Global level.  In this role she and EBW are charged with empowering women in building sustainable businesses.   INC. If you're looking to build a second career, Kelly Hoey's networking tips will change your mindset and your approach to networking. __________________________ We discuss: Her journey from a legal career in Toronto and New York to what she's  doing today How economic downturns created opportunities How we should think differently about networking - beyond networking events The most important word to remember about networking Where specificity can give you an edge The Do's & Don'ts of networking approaches - from the receiver's point of view The advantages introverts bring to networking that they may not realize How she thinks of the social media platforms she uses What can be learned from networking in the pandemic How to leverage your network in creating a second career _________________________ Bio Kelly Hoey is obsessed with changing the way we understand and approach networking. EBW 2020 included her on their list of the “100 Most Influential Global Leaders Empowering Women Worldwide”. __________________________ Wise Quotes On Why It's Not About Networking Events "I think what people need to think about networking is you need to ditch the schmooze. You need to ditch the notion. When you need something like a job lead or a career lead, you need to think about it more in the sense of How do I interact with people every day? And well before the events of 2020, things we were doing every day - we're texting and tweeting and maybe posting on Facebook, maybe we're sending a birthday note or an anniversary wish. All that is part of your networking arsenal if you're someone who has been or had been in the workforce a long time. When I think about your networking, how have you shown up every day for your colleagues and co-workers? Were you a good mentor? Were you someone who was a good project manager? All of those activities to me are part of our networking reputation - and network building - that we have done throughout our lives. So for the listeners who may be thinking about a change or some evolution in their career, this is where I'd say sit back and think about how you've been showing up for your network every single day." On Generosity "Well, I think there's this underlying notion with networking: Give before you get. And I think there is this notion that people hold on with sort of an outdated version of networking reciprocity you feel as transactional in the sense of,...
