Ever wonder what it was like to be in Studio 8H opening night in 1975 on Saturday Night Live?Director Jason Reitman wondered and his new movie, "Saturday Night," is a recreation of the hours leading up to airtime on that historic night. Somebody who was there, however, is my guest this week on brioux.tv the podcast: Lorraine Santoli. No, she was never one of the "Not Ready from Prime Time Players." Lorraine, who worked at NBC, was on the floor, pulling cables for the camera operators during the broadcast. Lorraine went on to a spectacular career in entertainment. When we met 40 years ago in California, she was the main Disneyland publicist. Thanks to Lorraine, I had a backstage pass to a time when it was still possible to interview Roy Disney, animators Ward Kimball, Ken Anderson and Bill Justice and voice artists such as Jimmy Macdonald.Meanwhile, Lorraine became close friends with original Mouseketeers Annette Funicello and Bobby Burgess, among others. She later climbed the corporate ladder and became Head of Corporate Synergy at Disney, managing up to 60 companies during the Michael Eisney era.And wait till you hear her story about Pam Grier! Spend an hour with my friend Lorraine Santoli, this week at brioux.tv: the podcast.
Matthew Syed continues his four-part mini series exploring the ethics of space exploration, by returning to the origins of the space race, which saw America and the USSR battling for supremacy. He takes a hard look into the reasons why we go to space and whether it has really benefited all humankind. When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon in July 1969, humanity as a whole felt like we'd reached a new frontier. The two astronauts left a plaque behind them, at the bottom of their lunar module. It said “we came in peace for all mankind”. But while Armstrong and Aldrin were ambassadors of the entire species, it was an American flag which was planted on the surface of the moon. This was a time of fear of Cold War competition amidst fear of nuclear annihilation. Despite the altruistic ideals encapsulated in NASA's motto "for the benefit of all", the geopolitical stakes of the space race were paramount. Matthew explores how this combined with America's perception of its exceptionalism and how the post-war period was filled with nationalistic ambitions and controversies. With historians Roger Launius and Neil Maher, Science and Religion Professor Catherine Newell, Space Lawyer Michelle Hanlon and retired astronaut John Herrington. This time Jeff is picking what to watch, and the selection is a 1970 short called Dad, Can I Borrow the Car, written by Ted Berman and directed by Ward Kimball. The space race of the late 1950's started not with a "bang", but with the steady "beep beep" of Sputnik, as it spun overhead. At this time, the American public was only just realizing how space travel was not only plausible, but probable, and they weren't really ready to see Russia dominating the world with technology in this manner. So how DID we get so interested in space travel in the first place? And how did that interest spread to the highest levels of the US government? Two words: Ward Kimball. Ward and Walt spoon-fed the public a fantastic primer on space travel, greasing the wheels for the Space Race. We talk about this evolution and more on today's show!
Crystal and Ian take a look at the life of another one of the Nine Old Men. Once described by Walt Disney as a "genius" Ward Kimball defined the style and animation of many of the films that we've come to love today.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Let's go back to 1940 by way of 1971 as we talk Bedknobs and Broomsticks, a Disney live-action/animated feature set in England during World War II. This week on Deep in the Plus, Rob and Jill discuss this often-overlooked Disney classic that lives in the shadow of Mary Poppins. Walt actually had a hand in the making of this film, even though it came out several years after his death. Ward Kimball, one of Disney's Nine Old Men, directed the animated sequences. The Sherman Brothers lent their talents with captivating melodies like "Portobello Road" and "Substitutiary Locomotion." The film features aspiring witch Elgantine Price (Angela Lansbury) who wants to use her supernatural talents to end the war. Set during the Blitz, in which the Germans relentlessly bombed London, Price is asked to take in three children displaced by the bombings. They learn she's a witch and accompany her on her quest to find the final spell that she believes will turn the tide of war. With the help of the instructor of her witchcraft correspondence course, Dr. Emelius Brown (David Tomlinson), Miss Price finally gets her wish. Bedknobs and Broomsticks is a little bit Harry Potter and a little bit Mary Poppins. But is it worth your time to watch? Plus, get bonus recommendations as Rob and Jill present their "Deep Pick of the Week." Hint: Jill's pick is a great watch considering Walt's birthday is December 5th. Also, Jill talks about Aristotle... http://www.attractionchecklist.com - Join John B. deHaas and I as we take the Grand Circle Tour on the Disneyland Railroad! One of Disneyland's opening day attractions! Recorded on December 2, 2018. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. It’s time to take a gran circle tour of Disneyland on the Disneyland Railroad. Disneyland’s website says, “Embark on a relaxing 18-minute scenic journey aboard an authentic steam-powered train around Disneyland Park.” There are no age or height restrictions to ride the train and the Thrill Level describes the attraction as being Slow, dark and loud. Before we climb aboard, here are five fast facts about the Disneyland Railroad. Before we begin our mountain climbing adventure, here are five fast facts about Disneyland’s Matterhorn Bobsleds. 1. The Disneyland Railroad began operation on Disneyland’s opening day on July 17, 1955. In fact, Walt Disney himself pulled the train into Main Street Station that morning on his way to give the park’s opening dedication. 2. The Railroad features five restored steam locomotives named C.K. Holliday, E.P. Ripley, Ernest Marsh, Fred Gurley and the Ward Kimball, The first four are named after American locomotive legends, the fifth, the Ward Kimball, is named after the Disney animator who is credited for inspiring Walt Disney’s love of trains. The older locomotive, the Fred Gurly, was built in August of 1894. 3. One of the most anticipated parts of the Grand Circle Tour is the journey through the Grand Canyon and Primeval World Dioramas. The Grand Canyon diorama debuted in 1958 and features an amazing background mural painted by Delmer J. Yoakum that is 306 feet long and 34 feet tall. The Primeval world diorama opened in 1966 and features audio animatronic dinosaurs that were build for the Ford’s Magic Skyway attraction in the 1964 New York World’s Fair. 4. The Railroad features a special train car, the Lilly Belle, named after Walt Disney’s wife Lillian. It is the last remaining ‘opening day’ car that is still in service, albeit only occasionally. Guests can pay to ride in the car as part of the separately ticketed Gran Circle Tour. Sometimes the first 14 guests in line at Main Street Station when the park opens in the morning will get a chance to ride in it as well. 5. On January 11, 2016, the Disneyland Railroad closed for over a year to accommodate construction of Disneyland newest land, Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge. When the train resumed operation on July 29, 2017, the new line line had the trains making a left turn for the first time in the attraction’s history. Now let’s ride the Disneyland Railroad for a Grand Circle Tour of Disneyland. Along for the ride is John B. deHaas and after we ride we’ll give you our thoughts on this opening day attraction. This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones, put them on now as we take a ride on the Disneyland Railroad. Trivia, fascinating facts and great conversation. Including an interview from the archives with Walt Disney animator Ward Kimball. Learn what was it like to work for the world's most famous movie studio, when it was a scrappy little start up.
The Disney Family Album was an original documentary series produced by The Disney Channel in the mid 1980’s. Episodes aired from June 1984 until January 1986 with each episode running about 30 minutes. They were produced by Michael Bonifer along with Carden Walker, the son of Card Walker (The third Disney Company leader after Walt and Roy Disney). The series lasted just 20 episodes and was designed to take a look at the artist and performance that shaped Disney Studios and Disney Parks, most of whom worked directly with Walt. The people featured created some of the most iconic Disney characters, movies and attractions ever developed. Narrated by Buddy Ebsen, the series is a true history lesson and provides the perfect time capsule with incredible insight and behind the scenes stories. In the greater scheme of things, the timing of these 20 episodes was perfect; any earlier or later in Disney History, and they may not have happened. Of the 20 episodes produced, 7 showcased one of Walt’s Nine Old Men: Marc Davis, Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Eric Larson, Wolfgang (or Woolie) Rytherman, Milt Kahl and Ward Kimball – all featuring stories directly from them! Only Les Clark and John Lounsbery, who both passed away in the 1970’s, are missing from Walt’s Nine Old Men. Other episodes featured Disney Legends like The Sherman Brothers, Ken Anderson, Annette Funicello, and Jim Macdonald to name just a few. One episode focused on Voice Actors, while another Disneyland Designers and WED Imagineers including interviews with Herb Ryman, Bill Evans, John Hench, and a very young Tony Baxter. Disney Family Album was produced by MICA. The master tapes were given to Disney sometime after the series was cancelled in 1986. Most of the original footage was lost in the Disney tape vault, which was not digitized. While some has been found, most of the original footage and the finished first episode, “Clarence Ducky Nash”, was not found. The remainder of the episodes come from Disney Vault replays captured on VHS in the 1990’s. The Clarence Nash episode was not replayed in the 1990’s. Brian McEntee and John Lasseter are credited with the “Title Design”, which of course, was computer generated; the timing is very interesting. Shortly after the production of the title design in early 1984, John was fired from Disney for promoting computer animation making this title design one of his last Disney credits. Of course, he joined Lucasfilms Computer Graphic Group which was later sold to Steve Jobs and became Pixar in 1986 – we all know the story from there. For this episode of SamsDisneyDiary, I’m highlighting the second episode in the series, Ward Kimball. From a tour of Ward’s full size train in his backyard, stories of vacationing with Walt, reminiscing about the Firehouse 5 Plus 2, or his amazing toy collection, Ward covers his thoughts behind animating the Three Caballeros and the creating of Jiminy Cricket. It’s an amazing 30 minute journey into the mind of a remarkable man. Look for all 19 Episodes of The Disney Family Album at www.SamsDisneyDiary.com and www.youtube.com/samsdisneydiary
One of Disney's “Nine Old Men,” Ward Kimball was already a Disney Legend by the time he was in his late 20's. He'd worked on classic animated films like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and many more. But it was his hobby away from work that may have made his biggest contribution to Disney history. Check out the Word of the Week – Kimball. Disney Legend Ward Kimball's biggest contribution to the history of the Disney Company just might have been a hobby that he worked on in his backyard.
Matt and Erin were supposed to be in Savannah, GA for a soybean symposium this week. But due to Hurricane Irma, the conference was canceled and they created a bonus episode of random topics. Soybean is quickly maturing throughout Iowa and insects are making preparations for the winter. Matt summarized a last-minute soybean research symposium recapping some of the presentations planned for the Georgia gathering. Both Matt and Erin noticed a lot of wasp activity around human structures and Matt explained they lose their social structure this time of year. Erin thinks she might have Lyme disease and will update listeners on her progress the next episode (teaser!). ISU faculty member, Ryan Smith, shared the blacklegged tick is expanding range in Iowa and the proportion of infected ticks is increasing in Iowa (see this survey summary for more details). Dr. Smith also said there are 195 confirmed cases of Lyme disease in Iowa so far this year. Finally, Matt talks about another great F.I.T. of Ward Kimball, creator of Jiminy Cricket.

Also, Disneyland Railroad conductor David Wilcox returns to the show to share his personal stories about Disney Legend Ward Kimball, and his opportunity to spend time with Ward, talk about his relationship with Walt Disney, and see some of Ward's railroad collection. Wilcox also tells the story of how he once derailed the Disneyland Railroad. Two weeks ago in the Lounge, Tim began a two-part conversation with Steve Hulett. In the 1970s and 80s, Steve was a story man at Disney Animation, following in the footsteps of his father, longtime Disney artist Ralph Hulett. In part one, Steve shared how he started his career at Disney—working for writer Larry Clemmons—and ten years later, how his Disney career ended. Today, in part two, Steve tells more behind-the-scenes stories about some of the Nine Old Men including Woolie Reithermann, Ward Kimball, Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas. Steve talks candidly about the departure of Don Bluth and a group of other Disney animators to form their own studio in 1979, the challenge of working for animator and future Disney Legend Ken Anderson, the arrival of Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg in the mid 1980s, and finally, the notorious internal memo that incited the wrath of Disney Feature Animation president Peter Schneider. Steve Hulett is Tim's guest today in The Mouse Castle Lounge. The Mouse Castle Lounge Podcast: Disney News and Interviews, Cocktails and Conversations
We're celebrating the holidays at Walt's Barn in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, with Tim's guests Carolwood Foundation president Bill Barbe, author Sam Gennawey and Margaret Kerry, the live-action model for Tinker Bell in Walt Disney's "Peter Pan." The Carolwood Foundation operates Walt's Barn, which originally stood next to Disney's sprawling 1/8 scale train layout in the backyard of his Holmby Hills home in the 1950s. Today, the barn is a museum with numerous train artifacts, many used by Walt himself. Other items are from the collections of train enthusiasts including Disney animators Ward Kimball and Ollie Johnston. Next to the barn, the Carolwood Foundation has restored an original combine car from the Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad and is working on other restoration projects including original buildings from Disneyland's Storybook Land Canal Boats and a train from the Mine Train Thru Nature's Wonderland. www.TheMouseCastle.com

(((HEADPHONES STRONGLY RECOMMENDED))) From the Disney Archives: In 1949 Disney was hard at work on another princess film which could make or break the studio, Cinderella. Ilene Woods, who provided the singing and speaking voice of Cinderella, and Eleanor Audley, famous as the step mother and later nine years later, Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty take on the roles of Snow White and the Wicked Queen in this RCA Victor Little Nipper storybook album, narrated by Dennis Day. In those days before the existence of Disneyland Records, it was common for other labels to license the songs, score, and narration of a Disney film. Some, like this one were brilliant, utilizing talent from the Disney canon and top notch bandleaders, Paul Smith in this case. This is a version of Snow White like you’ve never heard it before… but no less enjoyable! From Vault Disney: Familiar clips have been excerpted and featured in several DVDs and television specials, but in reality were part of a ½ hour interview conducted by Fletcher Markle who directed The Incredible Journey for Walt. It aired on the CBC in 1963 and has seldom been seen nor heard in its entirety since. Until now. From the Studio Morgue: This episode we unearth the now legendary soup eating sequence from Snow White. It was supervised by one of Disney’s legendary nine old men, Ward Kimball. Each show we present a high definition ride-through from Disneyland, DCA, or Walt Disney World. This week, with the recent closure of one of the Magic Kingdom’s original attractions, it’s time to do a compare and contrast of the two versions of Snow White’s Scary Adventures. We’ll take in first the Disneyland version, then fly off to the East Coast for one of the last performances of the same attraction, recorded in April of last year. We'll close this week’s show with a grab bag of cover tunes from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Who you’re hearing will be in the show notes on Mouselounge.com.
