We make no apology for having based several of our episodes around the person that many student teachers report is the single most important person in their teacher education journey: the mentor. They're the school-based colleague who looks after the student teacher on placement, gives them advice, feedback and support, and assesses their teaching. It just so happens that one of Emma's many jobs is to be on the team that supports those all-important mentors, and today we're joined by Sian Wickersham, who's another member of that mentor support group. In this episode, we chew over some of the difficult issues that arise in trying to define the role of mentor, how the university can support them, and what research tells us about some of the tricky contradictions that sit at the heart of the job. --------------------------------Recorded in Studio B2.15 at Cardiff Metropolitan University's Cyncoed Campus on 12th February 2025.

JONATHAN KANTER This episode was recorded on November 18, 2024,  the day when it was reported that Senior antitrust officials at the Justice Department plan to ask a judge to order Google to divest its Chrome web browser, Bloomberg reported citing anonymous sources. The department also intends to ask federal judge Amit Mehta, who declared Google's search engine a monopoly in August, to mandate actions concerning artificial intelligence and the Android mobile operating system. The enforcement actions are the product of the Justice Department's multiyear case against Google which sought to prove that the tech giant has a web search monopoly in the U.S. The Justice Department won its case  federal judge Amit Mehta ruled that Google broke antitrust laws in both online search and search text ads markets. The remedies are yet to be decided and will likely be fought in federal courts. Many parallels exist between this case and  US v Standard Oil in the early 20th century and US v Microsoft in the early 21st century. The remarkable person leading this effort which at its root goes to the heart of free markets, power and competition is Assistant Attorney General of the United States' Department of Justice Antitrust Division. He is deeply thoughtful and his mind is expansive, especially at the intersection of the law, free markets. Prior to this, Kanter worked as an antitrust attorney at the FTC and in private practice. AAG Kanter is considered a critic of “big tech” and DOJ has worked to block  a record number of mergers on antitrust  grounds. During his tenure, the DOJ won its first conviction in a criminal monopolization suit in four decades Jonathan has a very humble beginning in a working class neighborhood of Queens and  graduated from SUNY Albany and Washington University School of Law.  After graduating from law school, Kanter first worked as an antitrust lawyer at the FTC. He later worked in private practice, where he represented clients including Microsoft and Yelp as an  associate at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson. Kanter was later a partner at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft followed by  Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.  Two other notable cases he has led include an antitrust suit related to JetBlue's attempted acquisition of Spirit, and one against Ticketmaster's parent company Live Nation Entertainment. Upon filing the lawsuit, Kanter stated that "Live music should not be available only to those who can afford to pay the Ticketmaster tax". Much of his work, as was his confirmation by the United States Senate, has broad support across party lines, a rare thing in today's Washington.  RELATED LINKS NYT Article CNBC Segment Wikipedia Bloomberg Article Stanford Graduate School of Business Talk GENERAL INFO| TOP OF THE GAME: Official website: https://topofthegame-thepod.com/ RSS Feed: https://feed.podbean.com/topofthegame-thepod/feed.xml Hosting service show website: https://topofthegame-thepod.podbean.com/ Javier's LinkTree: https://linktr.ee/javiersaade  SUPPORT & CONNECT: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/96934564 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61551086203755 Twitter: https://twitter.com/TOPOFGAMEpod Subscribe on Podbean: https://www.podbean.com/site/podcatcher/index/blog/vLKLE1SKjf6G Email us: info@topofthegame-thepod.com   THANK YOU FOR LISTENING – AVAILABLE ON ALL MAJOR PLATFORMS

Class is in session! Our guest this week is Dr. Tryon Wickersham, an associate professor of animal nutrition at Texas A&M University. In this episode, Dr. Wickersham is sharing his expertise to help us understand whether raising and consuming beef is a sustainable practice. Whether you're an avid meat eater or you're more of a plant-based protein person, you will learn some really cool information from this conversation. Thank you to Kevin's Natural Foods for sponsoring this episode! Go to https://www.kevinsnaturalfoods.com/ and use the code “TMN” at checkout for 10% off your first purchase!   Links mentioned: Slate: Yellowstone's Beefy Fantasy Yellowstone Clip: Vegan Protesters vs. John Dutton Yellowstone Clip: Summer is a Vegan   Just a few of the key takeaways from this episode include: One component of the sustainability of beef is that we can feed cattle some byproducts from the production of crops like corn and cotton that humans can't eat. Otherwise, those byproducts would be burned (not great for the air) or go to waste (not good for the environment). When it comes to buying organic, grass-fed beef, you're going to get a much leaner protein than if you spring for prime cuts of beef, which are delicious because they have a much higher fat content. Sustainability is a balancing act. Grass-fed beef is perceived as a healthier, more eco-friendly process of producing beef, but it actually requires more resources and produces more methane, making it less sustainable overall.   Hi! We give you the true "3 Geeks" experience on this week's show as we are joined by an OG (original geek) Toby Brown. Toby, Marlene, and Greg talk with Litify's President and COO, Ari Treuhaft, and Pam Wickersham, the VP of Product and Engineer there at Litify. One of the taglines at Litify is that they #BreakLegalSilos. Treuhaft and Wickersham explain what that means, and how they focus on providing an operating system, built on Salesforce, that creates transparency between Corporate Counsel and their law firms. Both Ari and Pam got their start in Financial and Professional services, so they come at these business problems with a different approach. With Pam's engineering background, and experiences at Google, she brings in a unique perspective on how to build the technology through the lens of the customer. Ari's experiences with the Financial Services industry going to the cloud over a decade ago also positions him to better understand the naysayers in the legal industry who are still resistant to placing data in the cloud. It's a great conversation. We want to thank the great folks at City Acre Brewery in Houston, Texas for letting us record this episode there. And, for not laughing too hard as Greg destroyed his laptop by spilling an entire Maple Porter into his brand-new laptop. We hope this is a semi-regular event! (Recording at City Acre… not pouring a beer into laptops!!) Crystal Ball Question Toby Brown takes on our question this week by talking about the fact that attorneys are resistant to changing behaviors, not because they are unwilling to adapt to new technology, but because this is an industry that is very reputational based.
