Ambassador of the USA for Luxembourg, Thomas Barrett joined Tom on the Breakfast Show to talk about the upcoming anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge and why it's important to remember those that lost their lives in what was one of the bloodiest battles of the second world war. Ambassador Barrett is approaching the end of his first year serving in his position here in Luxembourg. Before coming here he served as Mayor of Milwaukee in Wisconsin, a state which has longrunning ties to Luxembourg. Luxembourgish and Belgium settlers arrived and set up communities in Wisconsin in the mid 1800s and today there are towns called Belgium, and Luxemburg, Wisconsin. In fact, Mr Barret's personal connections to Luxembourg run even deeper than that. His mother's first husband fought and died in the battle of the bulge. Upon arriving in Luxembourg one of the Ambassador's first visits was to the grave, to pay tribute. The Battle of the Bulge took place between the 16 of December 1944 and the 28 January 1945 and saw some 90,000 American soldiers lose their lives. The battle can be seen as a turning point in the war when the Allied forces overcame a surprise attack by Hitler's army to spell out eventual defeat for the Axis powers. The front line of the battle ran through the north of Luxembourg, with fighting happening in Clervaux, Wiltz and Echternach amongst other sites. Over the coming weeks there will be commemorative services in these locations. You can find out more about the dates and locations of these services here: https://lu.usembassy.gov/battle-of-the-bulge-commemorations-2022/

His first book "The American St. Nick" chronicles the true story of a handful of soldiers from 28th Infantry Division who brought a unique St. Nicholas Day to the war torn children of Wiltz, Luxembourg just 10 days before the Battle of the Bulge broke out. We also discuss his second book "Merg" written about a fallen GI, George Mergenthaler, who was so beloved by the citizens of Eschweiler, Luxembourg, that they dedicated a church to the memory of him. Tonight we're talking with Chad Wiltz, owner and meadmaker at Garagiste Meadery in Tampa, Florida. Chad has been making mead since 2014, and opened Garagiste in late in 2017, after winning the Home Meadmaker of the Year in early 2017. Chad had a life-altering event (though he didn't realize it at the time) in 2014, when he visited a small meadery in Michigan and tried their meads. And that started a quest for him. He wanted to have more mead that was THAT good, and headed back to Tampa to give it a shot, making home meads Having no local meadmakers to draw from, this gave him the luxury of being unafraid to experiment with flavors and ingredients not associated with meads.  Some experiments failed and others worked great, all had a powerful influence on how he saw mead and what he thought mead could be. Like any hobby he dove face first into meadmaking.  His goal was simple, to create memorable experiences through mead using locally produced ingredients to the extent possible.  Soon he was sharing those meads with friends and they shared them with others. A phenomenon of sorts was born and fast forward another year and he was being invited to pour at local festivals. In early 2016 he decided to make Garagiste Meadery a legitimate business.  The original concept was a side job of sorts, he'd make mead between the other day jobs.  In April 2016 he launched a crowdfunding campaign to get started.  Without much expectations or fanfare they put themselves out there.  The campaign closed a month later making Garagiste Meadery the largest publicly funded Meadery in history. After some soul searching we decided that we'd throw our fate to the winds and let the voice of the people be heard.  Garagiste Meadery would be a full Meadery with a Tasting Room and become the family business.  As the Meadery came together they felt the impetus to get better.  Still making home meads as they worked their way towards opening,  and opened in late 2017. Thankfully, some great meadmakers embraced them and helped refine Garagiste Meadery to where they are today. Join us to talk with Chad! Today we are continuing our conversation with a man who has left an indelible mark on the sport of trials. Wiltz Wagner has been involved in the sport of trials since the 60's. Even before there were dedicated trials bikes.   If you haven't listened yet to Ep 84, I urge you in the strongest of terms to go back to Part 1 of this conversation to get a sense of Wiltz character and accomplishments.   In part 1 we discussed Wiltz's background in the formation of the Rocky Mountain Trials Association, The Ute Cup and the North American Trials Council, what his definition of a spark plug was and how a fractured relationship between the FIM & AMA was put on a path to resolution.   In this equally raw and straight talking episode we discuss Wiltz's riding background, his attitudes around 'Purple' which will make sense when you listen. Because of Wiltz's humility we hear how Wiltz turned down sportsman of the year awards, has been reluctant to give interviews throughout his career.   However I do press him on his AMA hall of fame and we discuss why he felt it was the right time, and that it would be his spiritual home that allowed him to accept it. AMA hall of fame is a rare honour for trials riders; let alone people who had more significant influence outside their riding pursuits.   It's meeting people such as Wiltz that make doing these podcasts all worth it. To have the absolute pleasure of interview such an influential member of our sport was a real honour.   Ladies and Gentleman, I give to a rare glimpse of purple and Part 2 of my 2 part conversation with Wiltz Wagner.   Contact the Podcast: Email: podcast@trials.com.au Facebook Group: Trials Australia Podcast Community Instagram: trialsauspodcast TikTok: @trials_aus_podcast

Of all the consequences of climate change that we know about, one that rarely gets discussed is its affect on the affordable housing crisis. Back in June, President Trump (who has denied the existence of global warming throughout his presidency) signed an executive order aimed at “tearing down red tape in order to build more affordable housing.” But as reported in Teresa Wiltz's article for The Pew Charitable Trusts Statewide blog, “Climate Change Is Making the Affordable Housing Crunch Worse,” the administration's refusal to engage in efforts to reduce carbon emissions is creating larger issues than red tape to contend with. On this week's TrumpWatch, Teresa Wiltz explains why climate change is making the housing crunch even worse.

Welcome to Season Two of The Family Photographer Podcast! The first conversation of season two is with LaShawn Wiltz: a wife, mother, blogger and photographer from Atlanta, Georgia. LaShawn comes from family who is dedicated to keeping memories and giving them to the next generation with photographs. And, she is absolutely keeping her family's tradition alive while also encouraging her community to do the same for their own families. In this conversation, we talk about why parent-photographers hesitate to get into photos (perfectionism!) and why we need to do get over ourselves and do it more. LaShawn and I also talk about our love of daily photo projects and the group projects she does with her Instagram community. LaShawn tells us about the work she does for brands and also why she doesn't photograph other people's families. This season's theme is how photography helps. When I asked LaShawn, she talked about making macro photos when her father was dying. She doesn't take many macro photos these days but making them helped her through those hard days. We even squeezed in a little gear talk! We discuss the camera she uses and I was trying out when we spoke: the Canon 6D Mark II.  Enjoy the show! Sign up for emails about the podcast. Head over to the Family Photographer website to see some of LaShawns work, find past shows and support to the show.
