Dr. Matt Markel, Business Leader, Radar & Autonomy Expert with experience at Waymo and in the defense industry joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss the NHTSA mandate requiring AEB (automatic emergency braking) systems in all new light vehicles by 2029 and what impact this mandate will have on the development of autonomous vehicles. While the mandate doesn't specifically require LiDAR, Dr. Markel believes a radar+camera sensor fusion approach will likely be the dominant solution that automakers implement to meet this new regulation. He sees the mandate as a positive for wider adoption of radar, but doubts it will spur major radar technology breakthroughs since full autonomy (SAE Level 4) remains the real driver of sensor advancement.During the conversation, Dr. Markel raised concerns about the potential unintended consequences that the mandate could cause, such an increase in "false alarm" brake activations from the AEB systems detecting non-threats because of interference. If a driver finds the system not to be functioning correctly, the regulation restricts automakers from allowing drivers to disable the AEB system, which could create towing/repair headaches if the system suffers a failure. While the mandate aims to save lives, Dr. Markel argues the safety benefits will be small compared to the potential of full autonomy. He advises autonomy companies to "run their own race" and not be distracted by this regulation from their core SAE L4 missions which offer vastly greater safety upsides.Recorded on Tuesday, June 11, 2024Episode Chapters0:00 NHTSA AEB Mandate4:24 Radar Data Generation9:09 AEB Battery Draw12:49 Integrating Radar into a Vehicle Design 15:15 L3 vs L4 Debate24:26 Is the AEB Mandate a Distraction to L4 Goals?31:59 Unintended Consequences of AEB Mandate41:49 Impact of Slowing EV Sales on AEB Mandate42:57 Key Takeaways --------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy® is a leading source of data, insight and commentary on autonomous vehicles/trucks and the emerging autonomy economy™. The jellyfish-like Nanomia bijuga is found throughout the ocean, including off the coast of Oregon and Washington. It's not much to look at, but the unusual way it moves could help humans design better underwater vehicles. Nanomia moves by jet propulsion — pumping water through its body to push itself forward. University of Oregon researchers found that the animal can control these jets based on its needs, either synching them up for speed or pumping each individually for more efficient swimming. Researchers concluded that the feature could help inform how humans can build more efficient underwater vehicles.Kelly Sutherland is an associate professor of biology at the University of Oregon. She joins us to talk about jet propulsion and bio-inspired design.

VIDEO VERSION OF THIS: https://youtu.be/nGOYnZYY8Sghttps://youtu.be/VYCKfqi3AV8 FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM FOR MORE CONTEXT ON MY GUESTS: https://www.instagram.com/crownunfiltered/ ABOUT JORDAN: We have an absolute legend on the show this week and if he's slipped through your radar, it's because he's too busy executing in the shadows and not putting any energy into self-promotion, like the rest of us on IG! Jordan was a key member of the design team that did the 2015 Ford Mustang. Prior to this, he was a Design Manager at Mazda in California during an insane period in the mid to late 2000's where the brand was producing by far the coolest concepts in the industry. These included the Furai, Taiki, and Nagare. Jordan's team produced the latter. Prior to this, Jordan was a team leader at VW's Advanced Design Center in Potsdam. This was in the studio's legendary heyday where you would find people like Daniel Simon, Christian Felske, Achim Anscheidt, and, for a brief period, Anders Warming, walking the halls. As a designer, Jordan was one of the pioneers in developing complete volumes in Alias. It has become commonplace now, but it certainly was not standard practice then. To the best of my knowledge, there were only a couple of people in the world doing this at the time and he had a profound influence on many designers. Jordan's thinking is incredibly unique and there are many reasons for this, including his origins at the Rhode Island School of Design. He also did a brief stint at CCS and eventually went on to do the Vehicle Design program at the Royal College of Art. Last, but not least, Jordan is a faculty member of the prestigious Art Center in California and has also published a book titled: ‘Vehicle Design: Aesthetic Principles in Transportation Design', which can be found on Amazon (This is not a paid partnership, promise!!!
Sometimes, a pandemic is not the worst thing that can happen to a company. When Covid-19 hit, the pandemic did interrupt MellowVans' global rollout plans, but it also prompted the Stellenbosch-based manufacturer to revisit the design of its electric three-wheel delivery vehicle, as well as its operating model. “We realised just before lockdown in 2020 that we would like to improve our product by rather working to a European standard for our vehicles, which is aimed at the last-mile market,” says founder and CEO Neil du Preez. He adds that the global marketplace saw an explosion in online shopping because of Covid-19 and, subsequently, also in last-mile deliveries in sectors such as e-commerce, retail and food. “South Africa is still trailing these global growth numbers, but we are catching up,” notes Du Preez. MellowVans' redesign ended up being more of a remanufacturing process than a mere facelift, with everything on the electric vehicle (EV) upgraded, with the exception of the fibreglass composite outer shell. “We sourced the best of everything we could find, made the vehicle lose some weight, and ensured that it would fully satisfy European standards,” says Du Preez. “The result is a comfortable new vehicle that is a premium product built for Africa and Europe – in fact, it exceeds European safety standards.” Production of the new-look vehicle started in January. Operating costs of the new vehicle are at around 13c/km, with the 2.5 m3 cargo bay able to carry more, and larger items than competitor vehicles, says Du Preez. “There is nothing on the road that can come close to our costs per cubed meter.” He adds that the MellowVans' number compares favourably with the AA rate for a small internal combustion engine delivery vehicle, at around R5.50/km, as well as an electric motorbike, which would have to make numerous trips to carry the same load volume. The MellowVans vehicle is also feature-rich compared with a motorcycle, with a comfortable, lumbar support seat, safety belt, rollover cage, weather protection, as well as Bluetooth. The top speed is electronically limited to 60 km/h, as the vehicle is designed to operate only on urban roads. The range of the 10.7 kWh battery pack is around 100 km, with recharging through a standard wall plug, provided by an on-board charger. Charging from empty to full takes around four hours. The cargo area can also be customised to customer requirements, such as rails for a laundry business, or shelving for a retailer. “We are currently looking at options around cooling the cargo area,” says Du Preez. He also notes that around 70% of the vehicle is produced locally, by value. MellowVans buys the battery from a South African company, which imports the cells to build the batteries. “We make use of our own battery management system,” says Du Preez. He adds that MellowVans is set to receive some benefits from government's Automotive Production and Development Programme, as it is currently being revised to accommodate smaller manufacturers. “Government did engage us, and we are participating in the process,” says Du Preez. MellowVans employs around 35 people. “We are looking at growing our production capacity, with exports in mind,” says Du Preez. The MellowVan is currently undergoing testing in The Netherlands. Locally, Takealot, Spar and DHL are all MellowVans customers. “Our order book looks good, with a decent production pipeline,” says Du Preez. EVs-as-a-service Covid-19 not only prompted a change in MellowVans' vehicles, but also in its operating model, with the vans no longer on sale, but leased to customers in what is known as EVs-as-a-service. “We offer a three-year lease that includes everything – insurance, maintenance and training,” explains Du Preez. One other, additional clause on the table is an advertising component. “Either we brand the vehicle ourselves, or the client finds someone to advertise on the vehicle to reduce the price tag on the lease contract – by how much depend...

The future of mobility is electric, connected, autonomous and shared. With an estimated $100B invested in autonomous driving globally, autonomous driving technology was pitched as the biggest change in mobility since we stopped using horses. Yet in the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic, where is this autonomous driving (AD) future we were promised? This episode features a radically open conversation between World Economic Forum’s Head of Automotive and Autonomous Mobility Michelle Avary, Professor and Director of Duke University's Humans and Autonomy Laboratory Mary Missy Cummings, and Bryn Balcombe Founder of Roborace, as they discuss how COVID has altered our path to the future of mobility. The discussion twists and turns as Michelle, Missy and Bryn talk through the differences between how AI learns how to drive and how a human learns how to drive, cybersecurity in automated driving, why aftermarket AD tech is a no-go, and what a world with universal basic mobility for everyone could look like. Professor Mary (Missy) Cummings received her B.S. in Mathematics from the US Naval Academy in 1988, her M.S. in Space Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1994, and her Ph.D. in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia in 2004. A naval officer and military pilot from 1988-1999, she was one of the U.S. Navy's first female fighter pilots. She is currently a Professor in the Duke University Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, and the Director of the Humans and Autonomy Laboratory. She is an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Fellow and a member of the Defense Innovation Board. Her research interests include human supervisory control, explainable artificial intelligence, human-autonomous system collaboration, human-robot interaction, human-systems engineering, and the ethical and social impact of technology.Michelle leads the automotive and autonomous platform at the World Economic Forum, dedicated to identifying and closing critical governance gaps through multi-stakeholder co-designing, piloting, and scaling solutions. As a leader in automotive technologies, Ms. Avary has been at the forefront of revolutionizing the mobility space and has devoted her career in establishing better infrastructures for automotive, autonomous, IoT, and connectivity platforms.Prior to joining the World Economic Forum, Ms. Avary was Vice President of Products and Strategy, Global Automotive Io(m)T at Aeris, led a team that developed and operated telematics services for Toyota Motor Sales, and scouted technologies for leading automotive supplier Harman. An endless pioneer in developing automotive technologies, Ms. Avary co-founded Drive Time Metrics, an automotive data monetization startup, is the founder and President of Women in Automotive Technology (WAT), an advocacy group, and an advisor to several start-ups including DeepScale and Sfara.Ms. Avary holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Pennsylvania State University, a Masters of Art in Economics from the University of San Francisco, and studied international law and economics at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. She is a certified yoga instructor and holds several automotive technology related patents.Bryn Balcombe is a Founder of the Autonomous Drivers Alliance (ADA) and the Chief Strategy Officer for Roborace, a motorsport competition for human and AI drivers, designed to accelerate the research and development of Vehicle Intelligence and human machine interfaces required for transportation of the future. His previous experience comes from Formula One where he architected and patented vehicle to infrastructure communication systems and developed the F1 Group’s first global media network.
