»Wir müssen wissen, was uns wirklich bewegt!

In this episode, artist and writer Harry Dodge reads from My Meteorite, or Without the Random There Can Be No New Thing (Penguin Press, 2020). Perhaps best known as a sculptor, Dodge writes from inside the artist's life and the sometimes inchoate density of a studio practice. Tracking us through cosmic patterns and material grapplings as they intersect with family, work, and grief, this first book gives us a genre-defying memoir that succeeds, as well, as art writing. Harry Dodge is an American visual artist and writer. He was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2017, and his sculpture, drawing, and video work has been exhibited at many venues nationally and internationally, including JOAN (LA, 2018),  Tufts University Art Gallery (2019), Grand Army Collective (Brookyn, 2017), and the Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena (2016). His first book, My Meteorite, was published by Penguin Press in 2020. He reads from “Mileage from Here: Nine Narratives," published in Todd Webb in Africa (Thames & Hudson, 2021), an exceptional presentation of Webb's previously lost photographic work, in which Iduma chose a selection of photographs and wrote directly and imaginatively both to and of them. Iduma insists on his genre-bending approach to narrative art writing as presenting “a third, or shared, space between images and text.” Emmanuel Iduma is the author of A Stranger's Pose, a travel memoir. Sort of.   In the first of a two-parter, I take a look at how 3D printing may affect GW's business model and why, look at why people think it "isn't a problem" and why they're wrong, and what GW could and should do to adapt their business model to 3D printing.   In the second part, I'll look at the wider world of miniatures wargaming, where the impact is, I suspect, going to felt much more keenly.

All miniatures wargames seem to go through multiple editions, one way or another, but why?   Why are new editions of miniatures games so different to new editions of other games and/or books? Why do we get so many, so often? Is it bad for the community or bad for the hobby? How often is *too* often for a new edition?   I try to answer these and other questions in this week's episode of the podcast.

So, earlier this week I accidentally deleted, just... hundreds of files.   OK, so technically I had intended to delete the vast majority of them, but a mis-click ended up with me basically deleting my entire archive of podcasts and videos.   For most purposes, no biggie. They're all uploaded to the Interwebz if I need them and, to be honest, I mostly don't. However, I kept them around because it makes it easier to copy and paste elements from earlier shows into later ones, like intros and suchlike. Yeah, well... those were some of the things I managed to delete.   But part of the challenge of running a business is taking setbacks and turning them to one's advantage. So I spent a large chunk of a day this week creating brand new intros for podcasts and videos, so you get a brand new intro and outro from Bernard, with awesome brand new music and - to top it off - an whole hour-long interview with Five Parsecs from Home author, Ivan Sorensen.   (And, for the record, it's EE-van, technically; but since he moved to the US he answers to EYE-van as well.)

9th August was the arbitrary date I set for getting back to social wargaming and, with no sign on the horizon yet of anything radically apocalyptic to change that plan, it is time to make plans about what I'm going to play. Other than Horizon Wars games, obviously.   So, with that in mind, how can I choose from the plethora of excellent games out there which ones I'm going to focus on for the next 12 months? I think there's room for a maximum of three, but which three? Well, after a lot of thinking, I whittled it down to a long list of:   Infinity the Game  Aristeia  Kill Team (the new one) Deadzone  Warcaster: Neo-Mechanika  Bushido  Necromunda  Spectre: Operations  The Silver Bayonet  WarCry  and Star Breach    In this episode I rate each of these based on how much fun I think it will be, how innovative I think it is, how much money I would have to spend to play it, how good the local scene is and how easy it will be to find tournaments to play in around the UK. And, based on that, I make some qualified assessments of what I'm going to try out.

David Dylan Thomas David Dylan Thomas can help you tame the unconscious biases that can undermine your design decision-making. These biases are strong. You may never conquer them all. But recognizing them and accounting for them in your content strategy and design work can mitigate the hazards they present. You need to be on your toes at every turn to account for these cognitive biases. They can affect the products and experiences you design, your collaborations with your team, and your own behavior. Dave's new book shows you how to deal with each of these challenges. Dave and I talked about: the importance of understanding how people make decisions and how much of that process is unconscious and irrational how his Cognitive Bias Podcast led to the insights that inform his book an example of using anonymized resumes to remove bias from hiring processes how to re-introduce friction into design processes to slow down your thinking so that you have chance to make less-biased decisions the importance of adopting design practices that check your biases - e.g., "Red Team, Blue Team" or speculative design the hazards of focusing on the positive outcomes of our design work and ignoring the many possible negatives outcome the story of Abraham Wald and how he brilliantly figured out where to put armor on warplanes, leading to insight about "survivorship bias" how cognitive biases manifest in general, in end-user designs, in internal design processes, and in your own personal behavior how the fear of loss is twice as powerful as the prospect of gain, illustrating the bias of "loss aversion" how the design of real-life and virtual spaces prime people for different behaviors the three key biases to consider when looking at your personal behavior: notational bias confirmation bias déformation professionnelle, the bias of seeing the world through the lens of your job Dave's Bio David Dylan Thomas, author of the book Design for Cognitive Bias from A Book Apart, serves as Content Strategy Advocate at Think Company and is the creator and host of the Cognitive Bias Podcast. Mark Des Cotes is a podcast design specialist and the owner of Podcast Branding. He's an award-winning graphic designer with over 30 years in the design industry. He designs for both print and web. He started podcasting in 2013 doing television fan podcasts. He launched his Resourceful Designer podcast in 2015. It's a weekly podcast that helps graphic and web designers start and run their own design business.  Mark has worked with over 200 podcasters to enhance their shows appearance and help them stand out among the growing sea of podcasts through his professional designs. He designs podcast websites, cover artwork, and more. Mark is also the graphic designer that we use as part of our team here at Pro Podcast Solutions. He and I were both at Podfest Orlando a couple of weeks ago.  During this face-to-face sit down we talk about what podcast branding is, what makes great cover art, common mistakes people make and more. We also tackle the question of whether you should put your photo on the cover, looking at the camera, and who should actually have a microphone on their cover art. Mark also shares advice to create a cohesive brand for all of your platforms.  Mark's passion for design and podcast branding really shine through in this interview. He shares how even moving a design element a couple of pixels makes a difference. He strives for perfection and making everything look right. He also shares the elements of cohesive branding. We talk about having a color palette to make your brand easily identifiable across platforms.  Mark shares the difference between a logo and cover art and why both are so important. We also talk about social media. Why it’s important to simplify and mistakes beginners often make. We also discuss why a professional design across all of your platforms can complete your brand and make you stand out.  Show Notes: [02:50] This is our fourth or fifth time meeting in person. We've become really good friends over the years. [03:01] Mark owns a business called Podcast Branding and we'll be discussing podcast artwork, branding and more.  [03:47] Mark wanted to go into television advertising. He never intended to become a graphic designer.  [04:54] In high school, he won the equivalent of a college scholarship for one year. His guidance counselor suggested he go to graphic design school. He tried it for a year and decided to finish the program. He hasn't looked back since. [06:06] He discovered podcasting in 2012 and got into it in 2013. Our mutual friend, Wayne Henderson, had the worst podcast art Mark had ever seen. Mark designed something for Wayne and then Wayne started spreading the word.  [08:48] Mark also worked for a commercial printer and then dabbled in web design.  [09:36] Mark started a web design business at home.  [11:57] Be honest with your current employer and make sure your contract doesn't forbid side work. [15:03] Mark wanted to be the podcast branding expert. He has a video chat with every client.  [17:38] He never would have designed Melissa Radke's artwork the way it is without talking to her first.  [19:14] The first thing most people see is the podcast cover when they are looking for podcasts. If they like the cover, then they'll read the description. [21:17] Your artwork needs to be simple. Taking something away from a design will always make it cleaner. Overcomplicated artwork becomes amateurish. All you need on your podcast cover is the title of your show and possibly your name. [22:08] You can put your tagline in the description. [22:37] Your text needs to be readable on a small piece of artwork. Also, keep it down to one or two fonts. Don't overcomplicate it. [23:41] Microphones and headphones should only be included if your podcast is about microphones in headphones. The word podcast also doesn't need to be on your cover.  [24:31] The word show sounds more professional. [25:00] When it comes to using your photo ask if you are recognized in your space or if you are trying to build a personal brand.  [29:21] You have to be comfortable to have your image on your podcast cover. [30:50] Think about how your target audience is going to perceive your artwork. [34:43] Make sure your text is readable in a 125 X 125 pixel image. [35:53] Podcast logos and artwork are two different things. Have a logo and include it on your artwork. Think of an album cover. The band name is the logo.  [37:24] Carry over your branding to your social media accounts. Have a separate account for your podcast unless you are using it to create a personal brand. You can also rotate through your color pallet.  [44:21] A brand encompasses every touchpoint of your design system.  [46:47] Many of us have skills, but it's better to hire a true professional.  [51:49] Mark shares things that he has noticed that differ between the US and Canada. Hint: it has to do with restaurants and manners.  [54:35] He is a huge fan of fantasy books and science fiction. He loves The Expanse book series. He is also a fan of Building a StoryBrand.  [57:43] Darrell's takeaways: Mark gave a presentation about this very topic at Podfest. Your art is the first impression people get. They often use it to decide if they want to listen or not. Great cover art can get your show chosen above others. Make sure it looks good at 125 pixels. Think through using your own photo. Have a color palette and podcast logo to reinforce your brand across all venues.  Links and Resources: Pro Podcast Solutions Resourceful Designer Resourceful Designer - A Graphic Design Podcast Resourceful Designer on Instagram Mark Des Cotes on LinkedIn Solo Talk Media Podcast Branding Podfest Orlando Wayne Henderson Being Authentic and Sharing Your Real Self With Your Audience with Melissa Radke Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen The Expanse Book Series

Aga recently spent a few days in Viborg Denmark where she met and interviewed an extraordinary friend of ours. Jerrica Cleland is a wire, director, filmmaker and teacher - a real artist. She's a partner in the Danish studio Noerlum, but before that, she honed her skills in, amongst others, Pixar where she worked on Finding Nemo and Toy Story 2. However, if you speak to her, she would probably tell you that she's a storyteller. I urge you to listen to the full interview Aga recorded where they deep dive Jerrica's experience and focus on the importance of narrative and storytelling. It was also during the interview, that Aga asked Jerrica how we could apply narrative to the production of your Podcast. It is interesting to listen to how Jerrica applies her Narrative structure to our project. Even though it did not make the final cut we thought it was refreshing and applied some of what she suggested to the season we are producing. It's always refreshing to hear an alternative perspective and we thought we'd share it with our friends.

Estudar cultura é estudar as diferenças culturais.
