This episode of Queering The Air, Sasja and Shurthi was joined by Lesley Saddington, the author of “I Don't Want To Talk About It,” a biography of AIDS activist Anthony Carden. In this compelling book, Lesley explores the aftermath of Anthony's experiences with childhood sexual abuse, his ongoing mental health challenges, and the joyful moments he spent studying at the esteemed Lee Strasberg Institute in New York. It also highlights his rising career as a Broadway actor and the profound loss of his best friend to AIDS, as well as the intense discrimination they faced during that period leading up to Tony's death at the age of 33. This powerful narrative captures a mother's love and unwavering support, illustrating how Tony's deepest secret impacted not just his life but the lives of many others—a truth that was startlingly revealed during the 2014 Royal Commission into Child Abuse. We explored Lesley's motivations for writing Anthony's story and discuss why it was important to share this narrative.Purchase Book: I Don't Want To Talk About ItMusic:My Love Don't Cost Thing by Jennifer LopezFind My Way Back by Samuel Gaskin x Kee'ahn

Ours is a fast-paced digital world where technology has become such a personalized part of our daily lives, it's hard to imagine who we are without it. Social media, augmented reality, and AI-driven personalization each contribute to the formation of a digital identity which impacts the way we connect with others and how we present ourselves online. We've grown accustomed to how our smartphones and smartwatches intertwine physical and digital experiences. We've become accustomed to the ways technology influences the way we perceive ourselves and others but what happens when these technologies progress toward a seeming agency of their own? Or what about when our likeness is replicable in a virtual rendering or when the creative works we make are easily emulated by AI? For many artists, these capabilities bring up real concerns about intellectual property and the ethics of what constitutes our identity. Joining us for this discussion today is someone whose creative work intersects the worlds of art, technology and the future in ways that offer a positive look into the influence of emerging technologies on the artist's life. Sam Rad is a lifelong student of humanity, storyteller, performer, and musician. She was trained in anthropology, theatre, and movement/embodiment at New York University, British American Drama Academy at Oxford University, and Lee Strasberg Institute in NYC. She started her career as a theater director -- before founding 4 technology companies. Today, Sam Rad is considered a futurist, one who looks into emerging technologies and helps us understand the coming impacts these tools will have on our lives. When we drill down into the biographies and training histories of the cast of the hit show, "Succession," there's no uniformity of background. Some of them carry the pedigree you might expect: the American conservatories; Yale, Juilliard, Carnegie Mellon, or the London conservatories; RADA, LAMDA, and Central. Some come out of the New York studios; the Neighborhood Playhouse, Stella Adler, the Lee Strasberg Institute. A few have bypassed those training pathways altogether. This episode compares and contrasts the pathways of some of our favorite actors. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/storyofacting/message

“As pessoas me falam: Melissa, você saiu na hora certa. A gente produz teatro interessantíssimo, música e literatura. Existem outras vozes, as vozes do movimento negro, as vozes indígenas.
“As pessoas me falam: Melissa, você saiu na hora certa. A gente produz teatro interessantíssimo, música e literatura. On this episode of ActorSpeak, Austin Basis speaks with actor Goya Robles (Get Shorty, POWER Book III: Raising Kanan, 11:55, Brut Force, Rattled!). In Part 1, we talk about Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman, hip hop, Def Jam Poetry, studying with Elizabeth Kemp, the core wound, shadow work playing Raul in Extremities, almost leaving school, using animal work, making urgent choices, the importance of therapy, the Idiot Workshop, working too hard, living his truth, always learning new things, being in the question, the "fuck it" stage, and his epic audition for Get Shorty. A Stamford, CT native, Goya Robles is a Lifetime Member of The Actors Studio and holds an MFA from The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in New York. A Latino actor of Puerto Rican and Ecuadorian descent, his portrayal of heartbreaking, volatile, vulnerable characters have become a stamp in all of his work. Goya is most recognized for his breakout role as Yago in the critically acclaimed series Get Shorty on EPIX, working alongside Ray Romano and Chris O'Dowd. He has starred in numerous independent films, including a supporting lead role as Teyo in the film 11:55, starring John Leguizamo, David Zayas, and Julia Stiles. He's also executive produced the short film WONDER, which won over 20 national and international film festival awards, including the HBO Shorts Competition at the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival and the Audience Award at Urbanworld. Most recently, he produced and created the art film Who Am I? - a spoken word piece about race and responsibility. You can see him in the upcoming films Brut Force, Rattled! and High Ceilings, and the TV series POWER Book III: Raising Kanan on Starz. Goya's theater credits include The Actors Studio West production of THE MOTHERF*CKER WITH THE HAT by Stephen Adly Guirgis in LA, EXTREMITIES by William Mastrosimone, and CRYSTAL CLEAR by Phil Young, both at Dance New Amsterdam Theater in NYC. He also starred in the LAByrinth Theater Barn Series of Mark Borkowski's play, VALENTINO'S WING, starring Michael Shannon, Annabella Sciorra, and directed by Ellen Burstyn. Goya is also the creator of Paint The Mic, a performing and visual arts collaboration which brings attention to local organizations whose mission is to support under-served communities. As a spoken word artist himself, Goya created a way for artists of diverse disciplines to use their craft as a way to directly impact communities in need. Goya also taught slam poetry at The Lee Strasberg Institute in West Hollywood and his first compilation of poems was called Spit My Soul and released at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. What strikes me most about Goya's work besides his talent are his heart and authenticity. But it's his artistry that really shines through in everything he does- whether on stage, on screen or as a poet and producer. As both an actor and an advocate he is able to speak the truth, taking his pain and perspective and channeling them into his art. That's what The Actors Studio is all about, and Goya is one of the members that best exemplifies that. On this episode of ActorSpeak, Austin Basis continues to speak with actor Goya Robles (Get Shorty, POWER Book III: Raising Kanan, 11:55, Brut Force, Rattled!) In Part 2, we discuss the crossroads of abuse and trauma, his mentor Ellen Burstyn, not being killed off on Get Shorty, working with director Adam Arkin, his self-critical nature, rehearsing more to reduce the "noise," working with Javier Molina, chemistry as a willingness to receive, experiencing truth, going towards the uncomfortable, LatinX buying power and representation, humanizing "villains," feeding his acting compulsion, and his dream of opening an acting school for inner city youth. A Stamford, CT native, Goya Robles is a Lifetime Member of The Actors Studio and holds an MFA from The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in New York. Award-winning California native actor Robert Chestnut was born in Los Angeles but grew up in the Redwood Forest of California. Although his family had a clothing business, Chestnut knew from a young age that acting was his calling. Having the full support of his parents, Chestnut was professionally trained at the Lee Strasberg Institute. He first gained notoriety for his role as Ken in the Daytime Series Days of Our Lives, but found himself soon owning a business and having to make the tough decision between pursuing his dreams and keeping the business going. Chestnut's hiatus was not in vain, and he is back in the film industry, having already won Best Actor for his role in the short Sunny Na film, Carma. Chestnut is an empath, and with the skills he has learned from greats such as Stella Adler, he is able to pull out raw emotions and go to depths in a way that is untouched by his peers.http://www.confessionalmagazine.com*25% of all income made by Confessional Magazine via donations and elsewhere goes directly to Felicia Merritt's fight against Multiple Sclerosis.Support the show (https://paypal.com/ConfessionalMagazine)
David Bernstein, Elisabeth Bloxam & Caroline Mirkes were all recent Fulbright alumnae to / from Luxembourg. They share their transformative experiences. If you go through the who's who of Luxembourg's heavy-hitters and glitterati, there will be a number who were Fulbright Scholars to America. This cultural and educational scholarship offers strong candidates an outstanding opportunity to live and study in America at any point in life after a Bachelor's degree. And it's not just for Luxembourg passport holders (although your statistical chances of getting a place with one may be higher); the Fulbright programme operates between 160 countries. Fulbrighters talk of the life-long relationships they build both personally and professionally in this evermore interconnected world. You will hear in this conversation the ‘high value return on investment', as David likes to put it, and believes it might be the greatest form of local citizen diplomacy. My guests Elisabeth Bloxam, herself a Fulbright alumna, is the Director of Programs at the Commission for Educational Exchange between the United States, Belgium and Luxembourg, the Fulbright Commission in Brussels - your go-to person if you're interested in this scholarship. Elisabeth spent her Fulbright year in Luxembourg as an English Teaching Assistant, and has been with the Fulbright Commission in Brussels since 2016. Prior to that she studied European Studies and French & Francophone Studies from the College of William & Mary in Virginia (2015). William Fulbright, introduced a bill in the U.S. Congress that called for the use of proceeds from the sales of surplus war property to fund the “promotion of international good will through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture and science.” One year later, President Harry S. Truman signed the Fulbright Act into law. Senator Fulbright saw an opportunity for good in the wake of the Second World War and proposed a program whose aim was to create the kind of mutual understanding and people-to-people relationships that would prevent such global conflict from happening again. The Fulbright Program has blossomed to become the flagship international educational exchange program of the U.S. Department of State. International educational and cultural exchange In Luxembourg, the Fulbright Program provides scholarships for Luxembourgish citizens who wish to conduct research or pursue graduate study in the USA and for American citizens to come study and teach in Luxembourg. The Fulbright Commission in Brussels administers the Fulbright Program for citizens of Belgium and Luxembourg as well as participants in the Fulbright Schuman Program, but the program operates in over 160 countries worldwide and awards approximately 8,000 grants annually. Roughly 1,900 U.S. students, 4,000 foreign students, 1,200 U.S. scholars, and 900 visiting scholars receive awards, in addition to several hundred teachers and professionals. She’s probably best known for her Emmy-Nominated performance as FBI secretary Martha Hanson on FX’s critically acclaimed series “The Americans,” and now Alison Wright has breathed life into another complex character in yet another hit series—Ruth Wardle on TNT’s “Snowpiercer.” In this hour, she gives us a peek under the hood of her craft and we get closer to understanding how she’s able to bring such naturalism and depth to all her performances. She talks about her early fascination with “The Method” that led her to the Lee Strasberg Institute, her “thought-linked” approach to the text which she developed over the years (that just might be a big part of the secret to her greatness), and I ask her about taking the challenge of playing Emilia in “Othello” for the Public Theater’s legendary Shakespeare in the Park, having never touched the Bard before, and possibly redefining and revolutionizing the role forever. SIENNA MILLER, star of American Sniper, Foxcatcher and new film WANDER DARKLYABOUT SIENNA'S NEW FILM WANDER DARKLY, IN THEATERS AND STREAMING DECEMBER 11thIn WANDER DARKLY, a traumatic accident leaves a couple, Adrienne (Sienna Miller) and Matteo (Diego Luna), in a surreal state of being that takes them on a disorienting journey through the duality of their shared moments. By reliving fond recollections from the beginning of their romance while also navigating the overwhelming truths of their present, they must rediscover the love that truly binds them together. Writer-director Tara Miele offers a profound new perspective on the delicate nature of relationships with this emotionally moving story about a couple who must reflect on their past in order to face their uncertain future.ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY ARTICLE ON WANDER DARKLY FROM OCTOBER 2020"What do you think happens when you die?"It's a question we've all asked ourselves, but in Wander Darkly, Sienna Miller's Adrienne must literally confront the great beyond if she wants to move forward from a traumatic accident.Dolphins and lush landscapes abound in EW's exclusive trailer for the film, before darkness and horror begin to descend. Wander Darkly finds Adrienne and her partner Matteo (Diego Luna) after a car crash, which leaves them in a disorienting, surreal state in which they relive their history together - from their fond beginnings to the hard truths in their present. They can't face their uncertain future, with their newborn daughter's wellbeing at stake, until they reflect on their past. Director Tara Miele, whose own car accident inspired her to write the film, told EW at SCAD that it was "quite cathartic" to share her story with the world. For her, the film's themes surrounding the value of life were amplified following Kobe Bryant's unexpected death, which happened the day after they screened the film at Sundance. "I was in my head - you're at Sundance, it's quite noisy, and there's all this craziness going on," Miele said. "When that happened, I just remember thinking, 'Right, that's why you made this movie, because [life] is so delicate. It's so precious. And none of this is really 'the thing,' right? The thing is your family and the people you love and the time you have.'"Miller's recent performances - in Wander Darkly as well as in 2018's American Woman, another complex indie centered around a woman dealing with tragedy - have earned her career-high reviews. The veteran performer spoke to EW about roles for women in 2020 and what she looks for in a film."I'm always looking to be challenged. I think the roles are a little better, I think people are more focused on more fully-fledged female characters in cinema," Miller said. "I was just fortunate to find two really rich people to play. I also think being a woman is messy and complicated and hard and emotional. And they felt very real to me, very grounded in a sense of reality. And that's what I'm always looking for is, 'Does this tell the truth about the human experience from a female perspective?'"Wander Darkly arrives in select theaters and on-demand Dec. 11. It also stars Beth Grant, Aimee Carrero, Tory Kittles, Brett Rice, and Vanessa Bayer. The trailer is here: https://ew.com/movies/trailers/sienna-miller-confronts-life-death-wander-darkly-trailer/SIENNA MILLER BIOSienna Miller was born in New York, educated in England, and studied drama at the Lee Strasberg Institute. Breaking Distance – Mental Health Awareness Episode – A Candid Discussion with Loan Chabanol and Sabah Cheraiet Our Breaking Distance team connected with Global Artists and Passionate Buddhists Loan Chabanol and Sabah Cheraiet for a candid discussion in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month and featuring topics such as Ego, Compassion for Self, Spirituality and Creating during the Pandemic. Topics all relevant to the human condition and connecting us all. Ego is who you tell yourself you are. ... Buddhist scholars agree that the ego is a mental construct we need to navigate the world. While in the Buddhist context you may more often run into the phrase “the sense of separate self,” its core meaning is very similar to the Western concept of ego. Self-compassion is extending compassion to one's self in instances of perceived inadequacy, failure, or general suffering. Kristin Neff has defined self-compassion as being composed of three main components – self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness. (Sources Wikipedia and selfawareness.blog) More About Sabah: Sabah Cheraiet was born in Paris, March 1965, in a family of six children. At 22, she met one of the greatest Buddhist masters of our time and travelled the world with him for more than 10 years. Her spiritual path is at the heart of her life and she is very committed to the Tibetan cause. Her love for painting and writing took root during her adolescence. At the age of 10, she marvelled at a jewellery box she was given, on which was painted “the blue-eyed woman”, from Modigliani. She started admiring the painter, and became certain she had met him in a past life.Today she lives in Montmartre, a few steps away from where he once resided. As an autodidact, she has been drawing and painting but never showed her work to anyone. But her secret garden slowly got uncovered: she started to reveal her canvases to her friends, who encouraged her to show them more. Her meeting with Stéphane Corréard (curator) was a turning point for her. Convinced that she has “a thread to pull”, he encouraged her to exhibit. She painted more than 100 canvases in less than 2 years.Very quickly she got an opportunity to hold an exhibition in a house Rainer Maria Rilke used to spend time in, near Munich. The show was a real success. One of her paintings was selected and exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris, in November 2015. https://www.instagram.com/sabah_drolkar/ More About Loan: Loan Chabanol --- Actress, Author, Painter, Director and Activist Loan was born in Paris, France, and is of Vietnamese, German, and Italian descent. A lot of people know how to do something, but don't know how to teach it. Like when my Dad taught me how to drive. He knew how to do it, but I don't think he knew how to teach it! That probably explains all of my accidents and speeding tickets! I just hope I can help people avoid the car wrecks that come with learning our craft. Paul Calderon is New York acting royalty. A list of his collaborators and co-stars, in numerous plays, films and television, reads like a who's who of legends: Pacino, De Niro, Scorsese, Lumet, Burstyn, Tarantino, to name a few. Not to mention Abel Ferrara, whose many films he’s graced (he also co-wrote Bad Lieutenant). He was made a member of the Actors Studio in 1984, and eight years later was one of the founding members of LAByrinth Theater Co., where as writer/director he helped mentor such talent as Philip Seymour Hoffman, David Zayas, and Sam Rockwell. For many years he's been on the faculty of NYU, The Lee Strasberg Institute, and SVA. He’s now the co-artistic director of the Primitive Grace theater ensemble, and can currently be seen in the Amazon series “Bosch.” He sat with me in the mezzanine overlooking the noisy (sorry!) lobby of the Public Theater in New York, a place that has benefited from his talents, to talk about what he’s gathered from 40+ years in the craft.

Our special guest is Margie Haber, author of How to Get the Part Without Falling Apart. This book is the answer to every actor’s audition prayers. Acting coach Margie Haber has created a revolutionary phrase technique to get actors through readings without stumbling over the script. The book helps actors break through the psychological roadblocks to auditioning with a specific, 10-step method for breaking down the scene. Actors learn to prepare thoroughly, whether they have twenty minutes or two weeks. With a client list that includes Halle Berry, Brad Pitt, Kelly Preston, Heather Locklear, Vince Vaughn, Téa Leoni, Josie Bissett, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Laura Innes, and Tom Arnold, among others, Haber encourages and leads the reader through the audition process with helpful and oftentimes humorous examples. Includes script excerpts, audition stories from today’s hottest stars, and tips from top industry professionals. Margie Haber is known as Hollywood’s top audition coach. She began her career as an actor before becoming a coach. Margie’s philosophy empowers actors to create strong ‘characters’ for both auditions and booked roles. And whether that is on TV, film or stage. It’s about finding your own power in the lives you create. For more than twenty years, she has taught many of Hollywood’s rising stars at her own Margie Haber Cold Reading Workshops in Los Angeles. Ms. Haber also holds ongoing workshops in San Francisco and New York, as well as seminars in other cities nationally and worldwide. Margie Haber has always given her all to her students. It was while teaching at the Lee Strasberg Institute in the 1970’s that she noticed actors were confident at scene study but struggling with the audition process. Using her past experience as a speech therapist combined with her acting experience Margie developed the internationally recognized Haber Phrasing™. A 10-step instinctual approach to cold reading and auditions. The Margie Haber Studio opened in 1986 and just a few years later, two of Margie’s clients, Brad Pitt and Michael Easton, wound up testing for the same role in the film “Thelma & Louise“. That was Pitt’s career breakthrough role and she’s helped thousands of other actors do the same ever since. (See her client list here.) Margie Haber recently evolved her teaching to empower actors beyond the audition to life on the set and the stage. She hand-picks and trains all her teachers, therefore, ensuring a studio filled with caring, passionate educators who encourage students to grow as a person as well as an actor. For over three decades, students have attended her Stop Acting and Start Living the Life workshop in cities across the globe. Including Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Atlanta, and New York City. In 2015, she coached and associate produced the feature film, Bravetown, (starring Josh Duhamel, Lucas Till, Laura Dern, and Maria Bello). She also recently produced and starred in Hollywood Trials, a Docu/Reality TV series about Margie starring Emmett Scanlan for RTE network in Ireland. Margie Haber’s book, How to Get the Part Without Falling Apart, is used throughout the world in drama schools and colleges. Her interactive app, Stop Acting, has over 120 minutes of videos that help actors build creativity and confidence. The free Actors Connect With Margie app is a handy way for actors to keep up with exciting studio news. Visit her website at www.margiehaber.com
Tony Award winner Kelli O'Hara is one of Broadway’s most celebrated leading ladies. Born and raised in Oklahoma, Kelli spent most of her childhood on her family’s cattle farm. A serendipitous move to another town while in high school offered Kelli a new beginning, one in which she immersed herself in the arts. She never looked back. An interest in opera began her lifelong relationship with vocal teacher Florence Birdwell. (Ms. Birdwell had taught another actress from Oklahoma, Kristin Chenoweth. Indeed it was Kristin Chenoweth who introduced Kelli to her first agent in New York City.) Small parts led to bigger ones; eventually a leading role in the national tour of "Jekyll and Hyde" followed. Kelli then made her Broadway debut as a replacement in the musical horror-drama loosely based on the novella by Robert Louis Stevenson. In her conversation with Ilana, Kelli discusses how there were times when she thought perhaps she had landed the role that would be her big break, but it was not to be. Ironically, it was a bit of luck that found her in California when the workshop of a new musical called "Light in the Piazza" was being cast. It was that workshop that led to the Lincoln Center production that made Kelli O’Hara a Broadway star. From farm girl to Tony Award winning actress, Kelli O'Hara shares her amazing story with Ilana on this episode of "Little Known Facts!" Kelli O’Hara has unequivocally established herself as one of Broadway’s great leading ladies. Her portrayal of Anna Leonowens in the critically acclaimed revival of "The King and I" recently garnered her a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, along with Drama League and Outer Critics nominations. In 2014, her performance as Francesca in the musical adaptation of "The Bridges of Madison County" earned her Tony, Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle nominations. Also that year, she starred as Mrs. Darling in NBC’s live telecast of “Peter Pan” alongside Allison Williams and Christian Borle, and on New Year’s Eve, Kelli made her Metropolitan Opera debut in the production of "The Merry Widow" with Renee Fleming. A native of Oklahoma, Kelli received a degree in opera, and after winning the State Metropolitan Opera Competition, moved to New York and enrolled in the Lee Strasberg Institute. She made her Broadway debut in "Jekyll & Hyde" and followed it with Sondheim’s "Follies," "Sweet Smell of Success" opposite John Lithgow, and "Dracula." In 2003 Kelli committed to a production of "The Light in the Piazza" at Seattle’s Intiman Theatre. The show landed on Broadway in 2005 and earned Kelli her first Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations. She moved from one critical and commercial success to another when she joined Harry Connick on Broadway in the 2006 Tony award-winning production of "The Pajama Game," for which Kelli received Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Award nominations. Kelli starred in the Tony Award-winning revival of "South Pacific" at Lincoln Center, enrapturing audiences and critics alike with her soulful and complex interpretation of Nellie Forbush, and garnering Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Award nominations. She later teamed up with Matthew Broderick in Broadway's musical comedy "Nice Work if You Can Get it," earning Tony, Drama Desk, Drama League and Outer Critics Circle nominations, as well as the Fred Astaire Nomination for dance. Among her film and television credits are "Sex & The City 2," Martin Scorsese’s short "The Key to Reserva" opposite Simon Baker; "The Dying Gaul," "Blue Bloods" (NBC pilot), "All Rise" (NBC pilot), "Alexander Hamilton" (Maria Reynolds) starring Brian F. O’Byrne (PBS), "NUMB3RS" (CBS), "All My Children," the animated series "Car Talk," and numerous live performances on national television shows. Kelli currently resides in New York City.
