Jeannette is joined by Kerry Healy, Chief Commercial Officer for Accor Hotels in the APAC region, who shares her inspiring journey in the hospitality industry. From her early days in hotel school to navigating the complexities of a major global organisation, Kerry discusses the importance of emotional intelligence, mentorship, and the courage to ask for what you want. She reflects on her experiences with imposter syndrome, the value of failure as a learning opportunity, and the significance of setting boundaries for personal well-being KEY TAKEAWAYS Understanding the values and dynamics of a large organisation is crucial. Building relationships with mentors and advocates can significantly impact career growth. It's important to have a voice and advocate for oneself in a corporate environment. Many individuals, especially women, struggle with imposter syndrome. To combat this, it's essential to focus on self-validation, seek help from mentors, and recognise that no subject is too complex to learn about. Failure is a part of growth. It's important to analyse what went wrong, learn from mistakes, and avoid repeating them. Recognising what is within one's control can help in managing setbacks effectively. Protecting personal time and mental space is vital for maintaining well-being and effectiveness as a leader. Establishing clear boundaries with both oneself and the team fosters a healthier work environment. BEST MOMENTS "Brave for me is doing exactly what I said before. It is asking for what you want. It is putting yourself in uncomfortable situations." "If I don't put my hand up for this role, I'm staring at another three years reporting to someone else. I know I can do this role." "Obsessing about what you can't do won't help you grow or get there." "You have to deliver what you say you're going to do, right? You are your own brand in a big organisation." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It’s never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANT. Joining me today is Tash Menon - CEO & Co-Founder of global creative technology company, Mash. Founded in 2018, Mash's foundational belief is that there's a more creative way to do creative services. Having flipped the traditional agency model on its head — by curating bespoke creative teams from referral-only freelancers — Mash has cultivated a global community of creatives working across 28 countries, with global brands such as Netflix, Breitling, Accor Hotels and some of Asia Pacific's fastest growing scale-up businesses. The Mash of today has evolved into something almost unrecognisable from when it was started on a kitchen dining table. With the focus of redefining the future of work and continually building a culture that empowers and encourages both brands and creatives to benefit from remote work structures, Tash's direct and transparent approach has led her to now build a global business that has been recognised in almost every industry and business publication in Australia. Dubbed the ‘Mighty Mouse' of the advertising industry by Forbes USA and proudly named one of Campaign Asia's ‘Women to Watch', it's safe to say Tash's impact on the industry has spread far and wide, changing the way brands and creatives view their work for the unforeseeable future — and for the better. Mash is also listed in Saari Collective's 101 South Asian Australian Startup Founders List (which you can check out here: https://saaricollective.com.au/south-asian-australian-startup-founder-list/?v=1). Tash so naturally embodies the qualities of a textbook founder with a twist – living and breathing inclusive leadership without rhetoric. I hope you enjoy the conversation and all of Tash's stories of the ups and downs of the startup game.

In this episode, Jeannette talks to Steven Daines who is the Chief Talent & Culture Officer and a member of Accor's Executive Committee. He trained as a banker but decided to take a different direction and joined Carnival Cruise Lines which gave him the travel and hospitality bug. They discuss diversity in-depth. How it benefits companies and the challenges that need to be overcome to achieve true diversity. As well as talking about managing a range of hotels that cover the entire spectrum from budget to luxury and the future of the industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS From the start, Accor decentralised, recruited locally, and empowered those people. Because of recruiting locally, the Accor group has always had good diversity. But has had to work harder on gender diversity. Decision-making is of a higher quality if you represent the diversity of your customers. Cultural differences still present challenges, but it is a learning curve. Social mobility is a big part of true diversity. Achieving true diversity means different things in different places. Companies need to learn to provide services that work for a far more diverse demographic. Any industry that needs people to work unsociable hours is struggling to attract staff. You learn fastest when you are challenged. If you are given an opportunity, take it. Accor values experience and passion combined with empathy with guests. BEST MOMENTS ‘It is still ridiculous that there should be less than half of the leaders of any company anywhere who are ladies. ´ ‘What I would like, really, is for Accor to be known within the next five years as the most culturally diverse company on Earth.' ‘I think all of us want to experience professional service, but we don't want it to be stiff. We don't want it to be passively formal, it suddenly feels very 19th-century.' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. Maaike Coppens is the author of the new book Design Conversationnel published in French by Eyrolles with a forthcoming English edition. Maaike and I first met at an event in 2018 in Paris, and that provided a springboard to discuss how the priorities and expectations around conversation design have changed. One important topic we discuss is the rising focus on task completion for voice assistant applications as opposed to likeability and building affective trust. Much of this is driven by changing consumer behaviors and preferences. Coppens is the vice president of design at OpenDialog AI, the developer of the open source conversation management framework. Previously, she was a senior user experience and conversation design consultant for Accor Hotels, Applause, and XAPPmedia. She also worked as a conversation designer at voice-first game maker labworks.io and is an Alexa Champion.

In this episode, Jeannette talks to Duncan O´Rourke who is the Chief Executive Officer of Northern Europe at Accor. He talks about his early life, living in South Africa, and then being educated in an English boarding school. How these things shaped the man he became and the career path he chose to follow. Duncan explains what it is like to run a brand that serves multiple sectors of the travel business. They also talk about how to build a strong team even though there is a severe shortage of talented people, at the moment. Dealing with the challenge of climbing the corporate ladder. As well as learning to switch gears and stop being the CEO when you are at home. KEY TAKEAWAYS What luxury is and means to people is constantly changing. Personalised service is a key component of what people expect from a luxury brand. You can't manage the IBIS brand the same way you manage the Raffles Hotel brand. But attention to detail is essential at all levels of the hotel industry. Climbing the corporate ladder is stressful. For every new role, you will have holes in your knowledge. Being honest about what you don't know is important. Stress is a part of respecting the challenge that you are facing. Surround yourself with people who are better than you. Employ self-starters who have sound values. There is a massive shortage of talented staff within the travel industry. Duncan estimates between 10 and 15%. During times of crisis, clear and regular communication is vital. Diversifying your team must not be about quotas. You just need to be genuinely open to hiring the right person for the job. BEST MOMENTS ‘For me, luxury is limited by definition, it is personalised. ´ ‘During those times when you have those sleepless nights, remind yourself what is going right.' ‘Our clients are diverse, so we embrace diversity and think it's important.' ‘Pretty good is not good enough. You always want to deliver your best.' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. Hi, I am Bette Hochberger, CPA, CGMA, and on today's #FinanceFriday, we have the fabulous Diana Moss from Mini Melanie joining us. Diana is going to teach us all about bootstrapping a business. Mini Melanie is a bakery owned by two sisters, Melanie and Diana Moss, who are our clients. Considering they started from nothing (with no investors) to now being recognized by huge brands like Beat Bobby Flay, Chopped, Guide Michelin, Forbes, and more, we are thrilled to have Diana on to discuss how they bootstrapped their business. A little background on Diana is that she is a human rights lawyer turned entrepreneur; Diana brings a passion for flawless operations and delivering superior service to Mini Melanie's customers. Before Mini Melanie, Diana ran various sales and operations teams for eight years at Onefinestay, a hospitality startup now part of Accor Hotels. She graduated from Emory University and lived and worked in London. Some of Diana's challenges with bootstrapping a business was running out of money; she avoided this pitfall by being extremely focused on their objectives, being aware of quarterly goals, and reinvesting their profit into the business. She attributes her success to her relationship with her sister and their ability to be nimble and make quick decisions. Mini Melanie has had a crazy year of pivoting due to COVID-19. The pandemic helped them accelerate the creation of their e-commerce site. She also cites spending money on marketing and crafting an epic newsletter, but she also credits luck as being a factor due to their loyal customer base. By keeping those loyal customers in mind, they can deliver fantastic new goods and are always looking for ways to provide more products and bring joy to as many of those customers as possible. Watch the video to discover how Diana and Melanie navigate working so closely together and find out Diana's unique talent! As always, stay safe, and we will see you next time! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bettehochbergercpa/support

Daniel is the former Director of Wellbeing for Accor Hotels and led the company's diversity and inclusion planning. Unfortunately, like so many in hospitality, the pandemic caused him to be laid off but he's still deeply entrenched in the space. We're diving into Diversity, Inclusion and Wellbeing on this episode. These are topics that are getting much more discussion in the hospitality space and as we look to re-open the industry after the pandemic, there is no better time to be talking about how we want it to look going forward. When initially talking with Daniel about being on the show, I learned that Diversity, Inclusion and Wellbeing are all related topics that each need to be a part of any organizations' efforts in their overall D&I goals. Daniel shares insight on his efforts within Accor on their D&I actions, where individuals can start in on their own efforts about education and actions, and where he sees the office of the future taking shape. It was a fascinating discussion that could have gone of for hours but I think in this first episode, we touch on several important points and have established a good foundation for future episodes. On this episode we discuss: Starting the discussion about diversity, inclusivity & wellbeing (4:11) Why is can this topic be uncomfortable to talk about? (9:04) The genesis of Accor's efforts about D&I planning (11:12) How to start the internal conversation and create buy-in about diversity & inclusivity efforts (15:51) How to start on inclusivity efforts (28:07) Where does wellbeing fit in? (34:22) About Daniel Leading Wellbeing for the Accor's portfolio in the North & Central America's region from 2014 to 2020, Daniel is no stranger to hospitality with a career in the fitness and spa industry that spans over 30 years taking him from Canada to Asia and the Middle East. Daniel also played an instrumental role is developing Diversity and Inclusion at Accor where he co-championed the LGBTQ+ pillar along with being a member of the broader D&I Committee for the region. Daniel holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and a Master of Science degree in Nutrition with a specialization on exercise and breast cancer. His extensive academic background and years of experience in the wellbeing space provide a level of expertise to the benefit of employees and guests that go beyond the trends. As such, Daniel is often recognized as an innovator and “trends detangler” in the wellness industry. His hands-on experimental approach allows for real life skills that go beyond theories and concepts. While the foodservice and hospitality industry is home to a diverse workforce, barriers to equality continue to exist in restaurants and hotels alike. On August 11, 2020 KML in partnership with Easton’s Group of Hotels, assembled a group of industry leaders to discuss what the industry needs to do in order to dismantle those barriers to ensure discrimination is eradicated, true equality is achieved and that everyone is treated with the respect they deserve. Last week, five months after that webinar, we once again assembled a panel of leaders culled from that first roundtable to determine what kind of progress has been made on this front, to examine the initiatives being introduced by various leading hospitality companies to ensure a discrimination-free environment and to introduce goals and directives for the industry so that it can become home to a diverse and inclusive workforce that is welcoming and hospitable to all.

Agility has been a key word for Accor for many years and has even greater relevance during the current crisis, explains Patrick Basset,Chief Operating Officer AccorHotels Upper Southeast & Northeast Asia. Talking to David and Catherine on the latest episode of The Future of Travel, Patrick says Accor is committed to being a nimble, flexible organisation close to the market, in-touch with different trends and changing consumer behaviours. In his region, this has included re-examining the adaptability of different spaces within a hotel, as well as proactively engaging with local suppliers to consider alternative food and beverage solutions. Most importantly, however, he stressed the need to look after your people during this unprecedent time. With 27,000 employees in the region, Patrick said a huge part of his work right now has been about working with their partners and owners to ensure every single employee is being supported.

Wellness … However you define it, we all want it. The hospitality industry is one of the business sectors where consumers of wellness seek it. The Global Wellness Institute reports wellness tourism is a $640 billion industry. In North America alone, travelers made 204 million trips and spent $242 billion on wellness in 2017. In today's episode, Lodging Leaders explores the business of wellness in hospitality. We talk to Kristen Intress, a hospitality industry leader and founder of Fit Farm in Tennessee. We hear from Adam Glickman who helped InterContinental Hotels Group launch its wellness brand, EVEN Hotels, and now heads his own wellness-consulting venture called Parallax Hospitality. Also featured is Emlyn Brown, vice president of well-being for Accor Hotels, and Andrew Gibson, chairman of the Wellness Tourism Association. If you think wellness is a high-falutin', hoity-toity amenity only the rich can afford to seek out and enjoy, think again. Wellness is an emerging sector in hospitality, growing at 6.5 percent a year. The growth is spread across hotels of all price segments and guest demographics. Wellness-minded travelers seek a path that not only introduces them to healthy concepts and choices, but allows them to return home feeling better than when they left. If your hotel can live up to that promise, you can build a healthy bottom line.
It is only fitting that Michelle Heston is featured on our 30th episode as we celebrated with one of her amazing one-of-a-kind cake creations. Michelle calls baking her passion project, a way she can combine her love for baking and her generous spirit to friends and family by "letting them eat cake". Our conversation moves around from Michelle's upbringing in the restaurant business, the family tradition of big Sunday dinners, how she found her passion for baking and a bit about working public relations and marketing for luxury hotels. Sondra unabashedly ate 2 pieces of Michelle's special Whiskey & Honey Cake. (Daisy chocolate sponge cake with Irish-whiskey scented and Sonoma honey vanilla buttercream. Naked frosting of the same recipe, topped with homemade burnt chocolate hard candies dusted with gold sprinkles (to look like figs), local wildflower honeycomb and chocolate shavings). Michelle's real life job is as the Executive Director of Public Relations for Accor Hotels, which includes the Fairmont Hotel Brand. You can salivate over Michelle's cakes on Instagram @hestoncakes and if you ever have a chance to taste one of her cakes you will taste the love with every bite.
