Jeannette is joined by Don Welsh, the CEO and President of Destinations International. They explore the evolution of the travel and tourism industry, discussing how Destinations International has expanded from a U.S.-centric organisation to serving over 760 destination organisations in 31 countries. Don shares insights into the challenges of cultural diversity in global business, the importance of collaboration within the tourism ecosystem, and the pressing issues of over-tourism and sustainability. He also reflects on his own career journey, emphasising the value of authenticity, the importance of aligning personal values with professional opportunities, and the necessity of embracing failure as a part of growth. KEY TAKEAWAYS The transition from a U.S.-centric organisation to one that operates in over 31 countries highlights the importance of understanding and adapting to diverse cultural needs and business practices. Building strong relationships within the industry is crucial. Collaborating with other organisations, such as the World Travel and Tourism Council, enhances the ability to address common challenges and share best practices. The need for alignment between destination organisations, local communities, and political leaders is essential for sustainable tourism. Engaging stakeholders in discussions about responsible tourism can help mitigate issues like over-tourism. The journey through various roles in the travel and hospitality industry emphasises the importance of being open to learning and adapting to new challenges, which can lead to personal and professional growth. BEST MOMENTS "The complexity of these jobs have never been greater... how you're going to convene a group of people to deal with maybe over tourism or responsible or sustainable tourism." "I think when you work with different cultures, you have a much higher sense of emotional intelligence because if you want to succeed in different parts of the world, you cannot go in and expect to do business in the way that we do in the U.S." "We believe in the point of collaboration... at the end of the day, our focus is 100% on how the destination can do the best in serving, whether it's a leisure guest, a meeting attendee, or whatever it may be." "It's OK to question yourself. It's OK to say, how did I come across in that meeting? How did I deal with a colleague?" "Let's not reinvent the wheel. Let's learn from each other and grow together." Jeannette talks to Julia Simpson, the president and CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). Julia shares her unique journey to her current role, highlighting her extensive experience in both government and the corporate sector, including her time as an advisor to former Prime Minister Tony Blair. They also talk about the importance of understanding the interplay between government and business, especially in the volatile travel and tourism industry. Julia discusses the WTTC's significant impact on the global economy, representing one in ten jobs worldwide, and emphasises the need for a unified voice for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the sector. Together with Finn Partners, WTTC is launching in October a community for the global SME market called Together in Travel. As the voice of the global travel private sector WTTC wants to make sure the voice of the SME is heard loud and clear. This will be a dynamic and free-to-subscribe community with lots of useful content and will focus on empowering these businesses by facilitating meaningful connections, providing valuable insights, and offering tailored learning programs to help them thrive in a competitive market. Together in Travel Pre-registration form: https://form.typeform.com/to/eVF3u89X KEY TAKEAWAYS Resilience is crucial in both government and corporate sectors, as leaders often face numerous challenges and setbacks. Embracing failures and learning from them can lead to stronger leadership. Understanding the dynamics between government and the private sector is essential for effective advocacy in travel and tourism. Leaders must navigate the differing timeframes and priorities of both sectors to create meaningful partnerships. The travel and tourism industry must leverage data and AI to enhance operations and customer experiences. Leaders should take ownership of AI initiatives to drive innovation and efficiency within their organisations. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are vital to the travel and tourism sector, representing 80% of the industry. Initiatives like "Together in Travel" aim to amplify their voices and provide resources for growth and resilience. As the travel and tourism sector grows, it is essential to prioritise sustainability and responsible growth. Leaders should advocate for practices that protect the environment and support local communities, ensuring a positive impact on society. BEST MOMENTS "You have to make your luck, you have to push a lot of doors, but then suddenly one will flip open and it's not always the one you're expecting." "I think one of my expertise is, if you like, is dealing with crisis... you never quite know how you're going to deal with crisis until you're in it for the first time." "Travel and tourism represents one in 10 jobs that are created on this planet... we're also one of the biggest employers of women." "It's really important that the big boys and girls really support that, and it's also where a lot of the young innovations are coming from."   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Sintra, Portugal faces challenges due to overtourism, as residents report significant issues with increased tourist numbers during the summer of 2024. The influx, reaching 5,000 daily visitors, strains local infrastructure and disrupts daily life, leading to heavy traffic and long wait times at attractions. Factors such as post-pandemic pent-up travel demand, digital nomad programs, and foreign investment drive this surge, contributing to rising housing costs. Protests arise as local communities demand better tourism management to protect their living conditions. In response, city officials in Sintra implement measures to reduce visitor numbers and manage traffic. Other regions, including Barcelona and parts of Japan, also engage in efforts to control tourism impact. The World Travel and Tourism Council predicts continued growth in Portugal's tourism sector, raising concerns about sustaining community integrity. Discussions on sustainable tourism practices emphasize the need to balance economic benefits with residents' rights to ensure coexistence.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/ Hosted on Acast. Danny Guerrero, the vice president of North America Strategy at MMGY Global, always knew he was different. But despite facing tremendous odds in his childhood — including years spent watching his father struggle with substance abuse and feeling out of place as a Latino at an all-white school in San Diego — Guerrero pushed forward on his journey of self-discovery and has since turned many of life's lemons into lemonade.  Guerrero's interests and experiences in public relations, multicultural marketing and brand strategy have propelled him to prominence in the travel industry. He's active in the Diversity, Inclusion and Equity (DEI) space, (winning an Outstanding Achievement Award from the World Travel & Tourism Council for Advancing Diversity and Inclusion in the Travel Industry earlier this year), and he's pioneered research for MMGY that places a lens on the needs of underrepresented groups — most recently, Black and Latinx travelers.  In this episode of Humans of Travel, Guerrero dives into his journey of cultural connection and self-acceptance. He opens up about being the first person in his family to go to a four-year university, the moment he confronted his sexuality, and how he used his interests in politics and tourism to propel his career forward.  He also talks about what's needed in the travel industry to make it a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all.  RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE Inroads: inroads.org MMGY Travel Intelligence: www.mmgyglobal.com  Future Leaders in Travel Retreat: www.futureleadersintravel.com Latinx Study: www.mmgyintel.com Danny's LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com  ABOUT YOUR HOST  Emma Weissmann is the Digital Managing Editor of TravelAge West, a print and online magazine for travel advisors based in the Western U.S. She is also the co-host of Trade Secrets, a podcast created with sister publication Travel Weekly. TravelAge West also produces national trade publications Explorer and Family Getaways, as well as events including the Future Leaders in Travel Retreat, Global Travel Marketplace West, the WAVE Awards gala and the Napa Valley Leadership Forum.  ABOUT THE SHOW  TravelAge West's podcast, “Humans of Travel,” features conversations with exceptional people who have compelling stories to tell. In Episode 87 we speak with Danny Guerrero,  Founder, The Culturist Group (TCG). His accomplishments are astounding and driving change. In this episode we hear Danny's meaningful travel stories from his first international trip to Korea, his experience interning for San Diego Tourism Board and the special trip to Paris with his mom. Also sharing about the work his doing now and how it all began.   It was Danny's connection and commitment to local communities throughout his twenty plus years in travel marketing that inspired him to launch his own company, The Culturist Group (TCG). TCG is  a 100% minority-owned travel marketing company. As a thought leader for multicultural and diversity in travel Danny has been an active proponent of culture-forward thinking for travel brands and destinations as a means to help increase equity and inclusion in the travel industry. TCG was established at a time when shifting cultural identities and the need for more diversity, equity and inclusion in the travel industry finally became a priority. TCG believes that the travel industry and the brands, and destinations that participate in it can be a force for good. CULTURIST as a concept and consultancy practice, bridges cultural values with multicultural travel strategies to support clients to sustain better connections who consider where and with whom they travel as an extension of who they are. As social justice and diversity in travel became transparent during the uprising of Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, many travel brands struggled to find ways to bridge and connect with multicultural and underrepresented markets. Beginning in 2018 Danny forward thinking advocated for and led the delivery of key programs for destinations and far-reaching industry research on emerging and underrepresented travelers.  Danny championed industry-wide groundbreaking research supporting prolific travel brands such as Hilton, Choice Hotels International, Tripadvisor, NYC & Company, Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board on Black and Hispanic travelers, revealing these two segments alone representing nearly 30% of all U.S. travel spend, reaching in excess of $280M annually. His work has led to the bestowing of grants and funds to Black and diversity in travel organizations in excess of $100,000 to empower underrepresented voices in the travel marketing. He has been at the helm of multiple award-winning brand marketing and communications programs for destinations, hospitality and travel brands on nearly every continent. Prior to founding The Culturist Group, he spent a decade of his career building and leading agency teams at two well-respected firms, MMGY Global and DCI.  Prior to spent a decade in destination marketing with in house roles for hotel management and tour operators. His career portfolio includes research and public relations leadership for Visit California, Viceroy Hotel Group, Hilton, Sensei Retreats, Fiji Airways, Tourism Chile, The Travel Corporation, Visit West Hollywood, Los Cabos Tourism, Sonoma County Tourism, Destination Cleveland to name a few.   Danny is a frequent guest speaker at travel and tourism conferences advocating for underrepresented travelers and illuminating how shifting demographics, travel sentiment and culture represent opportunities for the travel industry. Dedicated to advocating underrepresented travelers and promoting travel for diverse youth and volunteers with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, INROADS (and Mrs. Obando's 8th grade class).  Danny graduated with a B.A. in Political Science and Marketing from the University of California, Riverside with Chancellor's Honors. He is an Executive MBA Candidate at the UCLA Anderson School of Management (Class of 2024), where he was awarded a Dean's Fellowship. Early in his career Danny served as an intern for President Bill Clinton serving in the White House Visitors Office and was a career intern at the San Diego Tourism Authority.  He is a recipient of the ‘Outstanding Contribution Award' granted by the World Travel and Tourism Council for his work advancing diversity and equity in the industry in 2021, and the Chairman's Award granted by the National Association of Black Meeting Professionals. Danny and his husband Jaime reside in Los Angeles, California.

The chairman and co-founder of Intrepid Travel has said there was too much “rhetorical flourish” from travel companies when it comes to discussing sustainability. Speaking at the Skift Sustainable Tourism Summit, Darrell Wade bemoaned how organizations were touting a “build back better” ethos, while failing to take action. “It's disappointing, embedded into marketing, or even worse the boardroom,” he said during the online event. “Half of the companies, probably more, will have done nothing. At the World Travel & Tourism Council, a good number of companies are talking the right way, and committing, but not enough are putting the rubber on the road.” While some companies had managed to go beyond what he described rhetorical flourish, he said travel companies needed to ensure there was”company engagement” from the top, and they needed to commit measurable action, including science based targets. “You need to sign up to have that line in the sand,” Wade told moderator Rafat Ali, Skift CEO and co-founder. “Sustainability is not easy, it's heavy lifting. Even one aspect like climate change, to work out a pathway to zero emissions, is a lot of work,” he added.
