In this episode, Alan and Robin discuss his path from Wall Street to citizenM, their focus on affordable luxury, the innovations they are bringing to the hospitality industry, and who they are working to serve. Robin also tells us about their unique citizensOf campaign and how it is helping them integrate into communities, as well as their partnership with World Bicycle Relief and how they encourage their guests to participate in impactful ESG initiatives. Robin Chadha is the Amsterdam-based Chief Marketing Officer of citizenM, where he leads the Brand & Communications team. Robin is half Indian, half Dutch, and was educated in American schools his entire life, giving him a deep understanding and appreciation for different cultures from a young age. He spent his first year after graduation on the floor of the NYSE and did another year in the offices, but knew it wasn't the place for him. He made the move into fashion by joining Tommy Hilfiger in New York, where he fell in love with the industry. He then moved back to the Netherlands to join his father's fashion company, Mexx, but left shortly after it was sold to Liz Claiborne. In 2005, Robin entered hospitality by launching Rain, a unique design-led food and drink experience venue in Amsterdam. Robin has always had a passion for travel, so he sold Rain in 2008 to join the budding citizenM team, where he has since been responsible for growing citizenM into the worldwide, distinctly recognizable hotel and lifestyle brand it is today.citizenM was founded by Robin's father, Rattan Chadha, and opened its first hotel at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in 2008. When Rattan ran Mexx, he saw his designers traveling the world unable to find affordable luxury hotels to stay in, so they became the pioneers in affordable luxury with a focus on emotional connections, efficiencies, and experiences. Today, citizenM owns and operates 30 hotels in most major cities across the world. They focus on Bleisure travelers that are blending business and leisure, leverage their citizenOf campaign to overcome issues when integrating into new cities, and maintain impressive ESG and charity initiatives to encourage their guests to improve the world citizenM is helping them experience. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this episode we hear from Marion. She was born into hospitality, quite literally. Her earliest memories are from the restaurant her family ran and they used to live above. She went onto have an extensive career in hospitality at many of the brands that I have grown to love and admire - Relais Chateaux, Laduree, Ping Pong, Harvey Nichols, citizenM and more. Each time she took on a new role, the business scaled with her. International expansions allowed her to experience new cultures and understand how business models needed to be adapted according to your location. She talks about how being a woman in business we need to speak up more, which takes courage and comes with maturity. Taking care of yourself and making yourself a priority, while its hard sometimes makes a big difference in her mental wellbeing. Have the courage to say no and ask yourself what do you want?
From Wall Street to luxury fashion to the wild world of nightclub ownership and now to Chief Brand Officer of citizenM, Robin Chadha's career has been a vibrant one. As he and Anant talk everything innovation, tech and a shared, permanent fascination with hospitality, Robin reveals the story of citizenM, the lightbulb moment behind the concept and the brand's distinctive take on luxury.
As we celebrate one year of recording together, the subject matters take more of a informal, personal turn. We totally wing it and touch on the subjects below: The King Coronation brought many memes, AI takes, drama and discussion around attendance and the performance and monarchy overall. Mo came back from his holiday and rated his hotel stay a little less than 10/10. When the hotel team checked back, insider hospitality chat ensued. The Oura ring is serving Emma well, key findings about health following the monitoring of sleep in particular lead to more talk on what really matters to us as humans when it comes to happiness. "Skill stacking" and so much more has stuck in Mo's mind following his latest book read. Something valuable and important to consider in both work and personal life. Mo talks about his career progression and different skills and experiences along the way that lead him to where he is now at citizenM in branding. On this episode we hear from Sara. She came into hospitality because of love, whilst the romance fizzled out, her relationship with hospitality stayed. She has worked in sales in the middle east and now in Denmark with CitizenM. We talked about the culture differences of working in the middle east vs Denmark, what had to be learnt and unlearnt each time she moved. ME is very fast paced, whereas in Denmark is more relaxed. Working long hours is not seen as a badge of honour and there is a greater respect for your personal life. We shared how we have both worn 'fake' wedding rings in different circumstances. How women make great leaders and we should celebrate that empathy makes us powerful. When it comes to confidence she emulates the abundance of confidence her male colleagues demonstrate and the way they promote themselves. Women need to get better at advocating for themselves. Outside of her work life she does theatre and she gets to bring that in with her into her work life too. Being authentic is key to being one with ourselves.
On this episode we hear from Virginie. Throughout this conversation she shared her learnings from each stage of her career and there is a lot we can be inspired from this conversation. A chance prize win for a holiday at club med, introduced her to the world of hospitality and she never looked back. Throughout her education she worked part time, like an apprenticeship, which meant she had a good amount of work experience to get her first jobs. The relationships you build this way are different to those on internship. Learning and getting support from your peers was the key to her success in one of her sales roles. She joined CitizenM just when they entered into France, she was the first person to apply for the sales role when it opened up and she instrumental to the success of the launch in France, which is not an easy market to enter into as a new brand. She learnt that once you become a manager and start leading a team, your role becomes more internal focused than externally. She also learnt to build her confidence, which came with time and maturity, learning to say no, which protects your priorities and the service you give.
On this episode we hear from MariaPia. From a small town in Italy, it was her early age of summer camps in England that gave her a taste for travel and how she choose tourism and hospitality as her career. She started her career in an architectural firm in London where she discovered her passion lies in hotels specifically. Through her networking she wanted to be a developer for hotels and then realised that it was the investment side that she was most interested in. Went to do a masters in Cornell, which then brought her back to London with roles in Colliers and DTZ to do advisory, feasibility and valuations. She then had an opportunity with CitizenM in investment, which she could not pass on, even though she had just signed the paperwork for her own flat in London. The lesson here is that be prepared for life throwing you curveballs and have faith that you know how to adapt. MariaPia being curious in nature is a master networker and we discussed the importance of it. Her family have always played an important supportive role in her life.
Building a strong hotel brand is so much more than just having nice colours, logos and fonts. It goes beyond the website and into the guest experience on-site but what does that mean, and how do you know if your brand needs work? Good morning from Skift. It's Friday, March 17, 2023 For daily updates in your inbox, subscribe to the Skift Daily newsletter at skift.com/daily. And now, here's what you need to know about the business of travel today. The Asia-Pacific region's travel rebound has gotten an enormous boost from China recently easing Covid-era restrictions. Skift Research's newly released Travel Health Index for February reveals the region's recovery has surpassed that of Europe. Research Analyst Saniya Zanpure reports that travel across most regions is flourishing, including Asia-Pacific. The Index's average global health score hit 93 percent of pre-Covid levels, a 4 percentage point jump from January. Skift Research attributes that growth to the Asia-Pacific region's recovery. Zanpure writes the area had been considered the “black sheep” of the global travel industry due to its struggles to recover to pre-pandemic levels. Skift Research also found that cancellations after February's massive earthquake in Turkey drove the decline in Europe's travel performance. Next, Dutch-based hotel company CitizenM has obtained a $500 million loan based on its ability to hit sustainability targets, writes Contributor Sherry Sun. Sun reports that CitizenM is one of the first European hospitality companies to adopt a financing structure tied to sustainability goals. CitizenM, which obtained funding from four banks, joins a list of hotel companies that have established emissions reduction goals. Finally, Skift has covered dozens of innovations poised to significantly alter the travel industry upon their launch. So have they really been groundbreaking? Associate Editor Rashaad Jorden examines the impact of six tech advances Skift featured in a newsletter named the Corporate Travel Innovation Report. Jorden reports that while virtual and augmented reality may not have lived up to expectations yet, both forms of technology are expected to become more prevalent in the travel industry. Dutch carrier KLM has already used them to help train employees coming out of the pandemic. In addition, some tourism boards have incorporated virtual and augmented reality into their marketing efforts. Meanwhile, Jorden writes that artificial intelligence has had a massive impact on the travel industry. He adds its importance is poised to grow due to the emergence of generative AI, the technology that includes the creation of images, audio and video. A growing number of online travel agencies are exploring how to utilize generative AI to boost bookings. For more travel stories and deep dives into the latest trends, head to skift.com. The drama around Ye's brand partnership downfall and Elon's new take on Twitter continues, and so do we. Ye is ousted by Sketchers before a partnership even started & Elon had fun with a sink on his first day in the new workplace. We couldn't resist commenting. Other than that, we took on two Q&A responses we had from people within the same industry: Our friend and colleague at citizenM, Sikko Baltus was interested to know our take on Taylor Swift's backlash following her new music video portrayal of "Fat" when stepping onto a bathroom scale. There was divided opinion on this from her fanbase, we took a swift look into her main audience and how this will have impacted them - the divide in support and backlash and ask maybe how this could have been done differently to still raise awareness and tell her personal story, but with less potential damage overall. Secondly, Paddy Smith from a social media agency we work together with at citizenM, Born Social asked "Is high fashion (Balenciaga in particular focus) a social experiment? From this suggestion, we share our own perceptions of high fashion, trends & societal shifts in "what is luxury" overall. Balenciaga at main focus, mentions of Vetements in a similar vein and if we are part of the loyal following these brands have gathered.

CitizenM is renowned not only for its design-forward aesthetic and affordable luxury ethos, but also tools such as in-room MoodPad tablets that control the temperature and blinds and lights that serve as TV remote controls. But digitization will never replace human connection, CEO Klaas van Lookeren Campagne said on March 24, 2022 at Skift Forum Europe in a discussion with Skift Senior Travel Tech Editor Sean O'Neill. “Digital is the salt and pepper on the table,” van Lookeren Campagne said. “It enables much better service and much more interaction with our guests.” Join us for our next event focused on hotels and short-term rentals, the Future of Lodging Forum.

Robin Chadha is a true brand enthusiast, who has always been surrounded by design and amazing concepts while growing up. Having watched his father set up a very successful fashion brand, Robin was always clear that he wanted to make his own choices and never be stamped “the son of the owner.” In this episode, we reminisce about his past wedding, drinking a glass or two of Ruinart blanc de blancs and listening to him sharing the path he took from growing up in a multicultural home to becoming a true brand evangelist. He tells stories of working at the New York Stock exchange right out of university, and how he started his career in branding landing a job at Tommy Hilfiger. It was just a matter of time before Robin would make the move back to The Netherlands and join his father at Mexx, but one thing was clear, he had to come in to learn and not as the “son of..” Join us as we get to know what branding really means to Robin and how his job at Mexx was just the start of a fun and exciting journey into the Amsterdam restaurant and club scene, finally culminating in his current role as CMO and brand father of the hotel brand citizenM. This is a conversation between friends and colleagues that truly love building brands!
In the first episode of QUO's The Future of Travel series, David and Catherine speak with citizenM COO Michael Levie about how much the travel industry is likely change as a function of COVID-19. Michael ponders the ramifications of social distancing for a brand like citizenM, which has staked so much of its identity on communal spaces. And he considers the need to stand by the core of citizenM even as they adapt to what he anticipates to be a ‘new normal'.
Nik Ranger with Jason Barnard at Digital Elite Day 2019 Sitting in CitizenM in Shoreditch, we start talking about pizza parties. Then onto horses – should we run like a blinkered horse, and concentrate on what we are doing and focus on the finish line? Or should we look left and right at our competitors? Nik argues the latter, plus think about context and perhaps we should open our horizons by exchanging with other people. We should now be taking into account the rich elements and perhaps look at the opportunities to rank on those and leapfrog the competition (coming back yet again to the explanation Gary Illyes gave me). That means having a very good look at your competitors' content strategy, but also prioritising the pages you are aiming to rank, especially when you are working on a tight budget. We get carried away with mentions of tools: Screaming Frog, Ahrefs, SEMrush, Accuranker, Majestic, Sitebulb. Then get back on track. It turns out that when you have budget, you can perhaps be a blinkered horse. If you have limited resources, you need to pick your battles. SEMrush is great for competitor analysis and perfect for picking your battles.

What a €750m investment from Singapore will mean to CitizenM; why Ireland's hotel market still has room to grow, despite some fearing parts of the Irish property market are overheating; and what Google is up to, as it adds home rental search to its hotel listings
Think St. George home values are high? Wait until you see what it costs to live in Manhattan. As you can see in the video above, I am halfway up the citizenM hotel in the heart of Times Square in Manhattan, and this is the perfect spot to talk a little bit about real estate prices back in St. George. About four or five weeks ago, St. George was named as the fastest-growing metro in the entire country. Two weeks after that, The Daily Spectrum published an article stating that southern Utah homeowners were being priced out of the St. George real estate market. That is not untrue—the average home price in St. George has increased $110,000 since 2013. However, take this into consideration: I learned today that here in Manhattan there’s a brand-new building right next to the World Trade Center Observatory whose available penthouses are listed at $4 million. Learning this, I decided to do some further research about Manhattan real estate prices on Trulia. A 500- to 600-square foot studio apartment costs around $750,000 here. A 5-bedroom, 3,800 square foot apartment costs about $9.5 million. “We have it pretty darn good in Utah’s Dixie.” My point is this: Real estate values are relative to your market. In every market right now, the tide is high. When the tide is high, all boats float. If you thought the situation was bad in St. George, imagine what you would have to pay to live here in Manhattan. The average sale price in St. George is $300,000 right now, which is still within reasonable range. We still need our wages to go up, but remember—we have it pretty darn good in Utah’s Dixie. Get a computerized estimate of what your home might sell for in about 60 seconds right here. If you’d like us to create a detailed market analysis for you we’d be happy to! Free of charge of course. Just give us a ring at 435-215-4533 or send me an email. As always, if you have any questions about our St. George market or you’re thinking of buying or selling a home soon, please reach out to me. I would love to help you.

Apologies for this show being later than usual - we always try and go live on a Sunday. However, illness got in the way and now we aren't so nasally and full of phlegm we are able to get behind microphones and record this weeks show, episode 10. We talk about living for today, our trademark hotel penis makes a re-appearance (yes you read that correctly and if you haven't tuned in before all will be revealed). Come back next week for episode 11.
Yinka Ilori is a London based designer. He specialises in up-cycling vintage furniture, inspired by the traditional Nigerian parables and African fabrics that surrounded him as child. This past September, he create a colourful playground outside the CitizenM hotel in Shoreditch, the hotel group of which Robin Chadha is the Chief Marketing Officer. Together, they discuss what India and Nigeria have in common when it comes to design, and why it's so rare for adults to think about ‘play.'

Against the backdrop of Airbnb, citizenM has come to the fore as a boutique hotel for the modern mobile citizen. Born out of the frustration of the fashion traveller, this startup hotel deploys user centered design to solve for modern luxury. 12 hotels later, 40% repeat business and artwork such as Andy Warhol casually placed around the sites, citizenM is a fresh burst in the hotel industry.
