Getting to the Root of Your Triggers

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 25, 2022 32:37

It feels so good to be back with you after spending the past several months recalibrating and processing the last couple of years.  And last week in a coaching session, my client had a major breakthrough around identifying the root of her trigger and I knew it was the topic to kick off Season 4. See we all get emotionally triggered from time to time, and it can set off a big unexpected and “irrational” reaction inside ourselves. So what do we do? In this short episode, I explore what is really at play when we get triggered. Hint: it's not about what we think it's about. So what is the real root? And how can we come back to a sense of what's true? I believe triggers are our teachers. They help us discover what fear or wound might need some attention, loving and healing.   ON THIS EPISODE WE WILL DISCUSS… - Defining what a trigger is - The 24 roots to your triggers - How triggers highlight your core wound  - Recognizing the theme of our triggers - Using the body as a tool to identify your triggers - The role shame plays in our triggers - How to get back to neutrality - The safest place to go when you're triggered - And more!  — SHOW LINKS:   “Make Peace With Your Body” Embodiment Workshop: http://maryhyatt.com/workshop   Text Me: https://maryhyatt.com/text   Follow Me On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/maryghyatt/    Full List of Episodes & Show Notes: https://www.maryhyatt.com/show   Subscribe to My Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/maryhyatt

#7: Spiritual Bypassing with Lindsley Brooks

Join Mary and her best friend Lindsley Brooks as they dig in deeper to talk about spiritual bypassing. When we experience emotions that feel “too big” or “too painful” we tend to find all kinds of covert ways to avoid “the work”. Many positive things that we incorporate into our lives with good intention can end up being used to help us cope and bring us comfort when life throws hard things at us. Prayer, meditation, astrology, spirituality, and religion are all things we might find ourselves turning to in order to bypass our emotions, pain, and struggles. The intention is good, but these “tools” can often keep us in a place where we avoid or ignore the feelings pointing us to places where we need healing. Part of being human is feeling a full range of emotions, experiencing highs and lows, and having a biological response to whatever is happening in our lives. When we choose to bypass our emotions, we self abandon and break trust with ourselves. When we choose to sit with our emotions and truly heal we create the opportunity to live fully alive!   ON THIS EPISODE WE WILL DISCUSS… - What “spiritual bypassing” is - How we use positive things to bury our pain - How spiritual bypassing can feel like the enlightened choice - Creating space to accept our full range of emotions - Attaching morality to emotions - Giving ourselves permission to be fully human - The addiction of spirituality to escape reality - 3 Steps to avoid spiritual bypassing - And more!    — SEASON 3: In this 8 part series we will be talking about Feeling To Heal in order to Live Fully Alive   ---   Text Me: https://maryhyatt.com/text Follow Me On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/maryghyatt/  Full List of Episodes & Show Notes: https://www.maryhyatt.com/show Subscribe to My Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/maryhyatt

We all learned in our childhoods emotional survival techniques. We learned how to be seen, get love, and gain approval. How do we learn to be in a healthy relationship with another person? When we find ourselves stuck in these patterns it is time to face the hard work of undoing the foundation of our patterning. Listen as Mary and Lindsley candidly talk about how when we notice the roles we played as children showing up in our adult relationships, it is really an invitation to do the work to usher in deeper healing.   ON THIS EPISODE WE WILL DISCUSS… - Identifying the roles you played as a child to get your needs met - The importance of doing relationships well - How and why we self abandon in relationships - Indicators that you might be emotionally codependent - What “Spiritual Bypassing” is and how you might be doing it - The definition of “Gaslighting” and how it shows up in relationships - Why emotional dysregulation is really a cry for safety - Why emotional regulation is really about creating wholeness - And more!    — SEASON 3: In this 8 part series we will be talking about Feeling To Heal in order to Live Fully Alive --- Text Me: https://maryhyatt.com/text Follow Me On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/maryghyatt/  Full List of Episodes & Show Notes: https://www.maryhyatt.com/showSubscribe to My Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/maryhyatt

Most of us were taught that there were “good” emotions and “bad” emotions. Some were sanctioned and some were not. And so we walk around thinking that if we feel the “bad” emotions, we are weak or crazy. And so, as we move through life, most of us are chasing happiness but unwilling to feel the discomfort of grief, sadness, loneliness, shame or guilt. But as Brene Brown says, “When we numb the dark, we numb the light.” In order to feel fully alive, we have to give ourselves permission to feel it all. In this episode, Mary walks you through 5 ways to stretch yourself as you relate to your emotions so that you can begin feeling the full rainbow. When we let ourselves be fully human all of life opens up. Because the truth is, we feel all day everyday, and once we learn how to name our emotions and create space for them without judgement we can receive the gift they each individually offer. ON THIS EPISODE WE WILL DISCUSS… - The importance of increasing your emotional vocabulary - How emotions are fluid and always changing  - Experiencing the ebb and flow of emotions - Why the contrast with emotions makes it all sweeter - Emotional seasons of life - The gift of challenging emotions - Approaching emotions as neutral - not good or bad  - Letting yourself feel many emotions at once  - And more!    — SEASON 3: In this 8 part series we will be talking about Feeling To Heal in order to Live Fully Alive   ---   Text Me: https://maryhyatt.com/text Follow Me On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/maryghyatt/  Full List of Episodes & Show Notes: https://www.maryhyatt.com/show

Join Mary as she kicks off the 3rd Season of Living Fully Alive podcast! We are going to spend Season 3 talking about emotions. There are A LOT of emotions right now. All you have to do is hop on social media and you will see that so many of us are feeling heavy emotions, and often those emotions are coming out sideways. Maybe you aren't using social media or other public platforms to let your emotions out, maybe you are stuffing your emotions. Maybe you are using food, alcohol, busyness, or other distractions to avoid feeling your feelings. When we disassociate from our feelings we aren't living a life that is truly fully alive. We need to befriend our emotions in order to process them in a healthy way. When we are afraid of our emotions and our feelings we can't get below the surface to deal with what is really going on. Maybe that fear comes from not understanding what emotions really are or where they come from. 3 Ways to Honor your Body's Wisdom

Join Mary as kicks off this month's topic, Body Wisdom. We are all born with an innate connection to our bodies. Somewhere along the way, most of us lose that connection. As babies we are born with the ability to let our caretakers know when we are hungry, and we know to stop when we are satisfied. As we get older parents or caregivers may self impose their ideas around food. Maybe we grew up in the “clean plate club”. Maybe we experienced food insecurity growing up. Maybe we experienced other things growing up that created shame around food and eating and we stopped listening to our own bodies. As an adult when we get stuck in a reactive place, often caused by stress, it is almost impossible to connect with our inner self to hear what we need. We need to begin to rebuild self trust with our bodies. If you are constantly looking for someone else to tell you what your body needs, or how your body should feel, or how to care for your body, this month is for you! We are going to reconnect with the innate wisdom we came into this world with and come back to being the ultimate authority on our own bodies.    ON THIS EPISODE WE WILL DISCUSS… - Messaging that overrides our innate intuition   - How our stress response disconnects us from our body - Relearning to trust our bodies - You are the ultimate authority on your body - Where you have trusted your body in the past - Honoring your body's wisdom  - Questions you can ask your body to begin to reconnect to it   - Listening to the subtle ways your body speaks to you  - Building and cultivating a relationship with your body for the long term - And More!     — SEASON 2: Each month will be a deep dive into a topic that supports you on your journey to living more fully alive. Join Mary as she wraps up this month's topic of Self Sabotage. We wanted to wrap up the month with some practical ways to get through self sabotage. Self sabotage will likely be a recurring theme throughout our lives. As we grow and heal, our self sabotaging patterns will likely shift and change, but might not disappear. The real goal is to be able to recognize them sooner, and deal with them in a healthy way that meets them with understanding. When we are able to recognize and approach our self sabotaging behaviors with compassion, we can then identify the areas of our life that need understanding and healing. Taking the judgement away helps us see our own patterns much more clearly, and also will help us identify the benefit we get when we sabotage the things we truly desire. We all want to be seen and heard. We need to not only extend this to others, but also ourselves. When we can take the time to address our emotions, give ourselves what we need, create safety, and write a new story we can begin to see lasting change and create the lives we truly desire!    ON THIS EPISODE WE WILL DISCUSS… - We can’t “cure” self sabotage -Recognizing our self sabotage patterns  - How self sabotage can help us identify things we need to address - Finding appreciation for the parts of ourselves that has been coping - Tolerating the emotions that come from our woundedness - The importance of self compassion  - Rewriting our fear stories to a more liberating truth - How micro steps are the key to lasting change - The 6 steps to end self sabotage - And more!   — SEASON 2: Each month will be a deep dive into a topic that supports you on your journey to living more fully alive. Join Mary and her guest and assistant, Liz Eskridge as they discuss how your core wounds can show up in your relationships. There are a lot of things we can avoid in life, relationships are not one of them! Family, partners, friends, co-workers, neighbors… all of these different relationships are sure to bring up our core wounds in various ways. If we aren’t aware of our core wounds we might find ourselves running from relationships, avoiding conflict, shape shifting to please others, downplaying who we are for fear of abandonment, and living lives that are relationally unfulfilling. When we take the time to dig deep and discover our core wounds, we create the opportunity to bring awareness to how we respond and react when those wounds are triggered. This is when true healing begins. When we can bring the subconscious into our conscious awareness, we can step back into the driver's seat. Instead of driven from a place of woundedness, we can move from a place of wholeness. Moving from this space of awareness can impact every relationship we have, including the one with yourself, for the better.   ON THIS EPISODE WE WILL DISCUSS… - How core wounds impact your attachment style - Fear of conflict  - The core wound of “I will be abandoned” - Conscious parenting  - How the same core wound can show up differently for each of us  - Awareness is the ultimate healing - Bringing the unconscious into conscious awareness - How avoiding feelings keeps us from healing   - Learning to move from a place of worthiness - And much more!    Listen on your favorite podcast app or the LINK IN BIO. ➕If you haven’t subscribed, I would be so grateful if you’d take a minute to subscribe on Apple Podcast, Google Podcast, Spotify, Youtube… or wherever you are listening. Identifying Your Core Wounds

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 15, 2021 47:46

Join Mary as she kicks off this month’s topic of Core Wounds. Our first core wound is the originating moment when we stop believing we are whole and deserving of unconditional love, and we start believing that there is something wrong with us. This usually takes place in early childhood when we don’t have the tools to recognize that we are not the problem. This ends up creating our personal reality. The person many of us become is often constructed based on wounding and not wholeness. Because of these core wounds we often walk around in life unaware that we are in defense mode. We will go to great lengths to protect ourselves from experiencing that same wound again, and in doing so we keep ourselves from living from a place of wholeness. It is crucial for us to up our level of awareness in order to pinpoint what traumas we have experienced and to be able to see how those traumas have played a role in who we have become. When we do this, we create an opportunity for deep healing, which then frees us up to become our truest self.    ON THIS EPISODE WE WILL DISCUSS… - Where core wounds originate  - The 6 top core wounds people experience  - How our beliefs are shaped by our core wounds  - How we compensate for our core wounds - The illusion of working for unconditional love - How common core wounds show up in our lives - Finding your true authentic self - How core wounds impact limiting beliefs  - Steps to heal your core wound - And much more!   — SEASON 2: Each month will be a deep dive into a topic that supports you on your journey to living more fully alive. You can’t create anything good in your life without becoming aware of how you got to where you are right now. We need to bring awareness to where we are in the present moment without judgement. Mindfulness takes the focus off of the external world and places our focus on our internal. This is key because everything that is happening outside of us first starts internally by our thinking. 95% of our thoughts are unconscious. When we choose to become aware of these thoughts we can take our power back and begin to change our external world and our future. Then when we can investigate what we are longing for without judgement, but instead with curiosity, we can pinpoint the limiting views of what is possible for our lives. The opportunity to become mindful is available to us all day everyday. Join Mary as she kicks off this month’s topic of Body Confidence! Despite what culture tells us, most people will tell you the thing they find the most attractive about a woman is confidence. Confidence can often feel elusive. Either you have it, or you don’t. But true confidence comes when you walk in the knowledge that you are lovable. That even in your flaws you are enough. No matter what you look like, how you age, how your body changes, you are loved. Feeling confident in this means that you know that your lovability isn’t ever on the line. Confidence is knowing that you are unconditionally loved. For most of us, coming to this place is a journey. It is a journey that has nothing to do with your body and has everything to do with your mind. The good news is that this kind of confidence can be learned! Once you learn it, everything in your life will work for the better. But it takes practice. When you move forward even when you are scared to be seen, you will begin to flex your confidence muscle. Little by little you will come into your power more. You will know that you can show up, even with all your flaws, and know that you are fully loved.    ON THIS EPISODE WE WILL DISCUSS… - The essence of confidence - The problem with your ego dictating confidence - Embracing your lovability - The ever changing standards of beauty - How to define confidence for yourself - Seeing confidence as a skill set - Your unique recipe for confidence - Mary’s 5 step process to feeling more confident - And much more!   — SEASON 2: Each month will be a deep dive into a topic that supports you on your journey to living more fully alive. Join Mary as she wraps up this month by talking about creating a blueprint to help you fulfill your purpose. We were all  uniquely created for a reason. Once we understand who we are at our core, it is much easier to craft the life we were meant to live. This allows us to show up for our purpose. It frees us from comparing our purpose to others. It frees us from allowing others to tell us who we should be. It allows us to see the value in who we are and the gift we have to offer the world. We have to believe that no one person’s purpose holds more weight or value than someone else’s. Each of our individual purposes, though different, are of equal value and are deeply needed. When we have this deep understanding of our purpose we can create a blueprint to help keep us on track and focused on our mission in this world. As we grow and change our blueprint will move and grow with us. We can stop and evaluate our blueprint at any time and make any adjustments needed. What we value in our lives will stand the test of time and show up in our blueprint in every season of life. The Essence Of Femininity

Join Mary as she kicks off this month's topic of Femininity. We get a lot of unconscious messaging around what it means to be a woman. A lot of “shoulds.” A lot of rules. And often a lot of pressure. We are put in a box with very limiting ideas of what it means to be a woman. Depending on where we grew up, our family of origin, and religious upbringing these ideas will differ. It is so important for us to begin to recognize how these outside influences have affected how we show up as women. Once we identify these “rules” we have been living by, we can then begin to define femininity for ourselves. We want to be able to create a definition of femininity that is empowering, expansive, grounded, and solid. Only we can individually choose what femininity is for ourselves. When we free ourselves from the cues of diet culture, of porn, of family, of religion, of region… we are free to take our cues from our own experiences and create our own definition of femininity that takes into account the unique way that we each show up in the world.  ON THIS EPISODE WE WILL DISCUSS... -How our culture impacts our definition of femininity -The difference between traditional femininity and modern femininity  -How location, family of origin, and religion inform how we see ourselves as women    -Creating a new blueprint of femininity  -Stepping into femininity from a place of power -Multifaceted femininity -Tapping into your feminine wisdom -And much more!   — SEASON 2: Each month will be a deep dive into a topic that supports you on your journey to living more fully alive. Everything going on in the world right now, and for many of us even our personal lives, seem to be mimicking exactly what we are seeing in nature. We are in a season of letting things die in order to make space for something new. Something better. When we allow a release,  enter into the flow, face the things we are ready to let go of, and we put down the heavy things we will experience massive relief. In order to move forward and live our lives fully alive we have to routinely pause and reevaluate what we are choosing to carry and what we might need to end. The thought of endings can bring so much fear and anxiety. But endings are necessary. In order to grow internally and to live aligned lives we have to begin to recognize when it is time to let go. The longer we hold onto things that we need to let go of, the more suffering we will experience. When we choose our necessary endings, when we release, we are creating space for new life.    ON THIS EPISODE WE WILL DISCUSS... -How nature is inviting us into a season of release -Clearing out the old to make space for the new -How our belief must be stronger than our fear -The difference between grief and suffering -Why believing life will only get better is essential for letting go  -Slowing down to ask yourself what is ready to be released -The cost of holding on too long -And much more!   — SEASON 2: Each month will be a deep dive into a topic that supports you on your journey to living more fully alive. On this episode, join Mary as she kicks off this month’s theme of Soul Rest. As we move through the next few months, the election, the holidays, whatever else 2020 wants to throw at us… we need to pause, replenish, recharge, and regroup. Most of us have spent much of this year in fight or flight. And now that state of survival has become normal. All of this is having an effect on our physical bodies. We need rest. We need to create space to give our bodies the opportunity to come out of that state of defense where our nervous system is over functioning. We need a serious pause in order to be able to take on the rest of this year. Our bodies are talking to us and we have got to listen. We are in a marathon, and this is the time for rest and recovery. In order to provide for ourselves, our families, and to pursue the things we are called to, we can not afford to not rest. We need to plan and prioritize our rest so we can take on the rest of this year from a place that is more stable, more empowered, and more focused.   ON THIS EPISODE WE WILL DISCUSS... -The effect that fight or flight has on our physical body -Moving from surviving to thriving -Making rest a nonnegotiable   -The importance of rest in other cultures   -The history of Sabbath -Top 9 reasons why we don’t allow ourselves to rest   -And much more! — SEASON 2: Each month will be a deep dive into a topic that supports you on your journey to living more fully alive.
