In a segregated US, black audiences, entertainers and entrepreneurs established their own network of live performance venues known as the Chitlin' Circuit. Concentrated primarily in the Deep South, it provided many pioneers of modern music with the platform to hone their craft and perfect their style as they travelled the country. Virtually every notable African-American performer from the '30s to the '60s graced the circuit. From famous urban institutions like The Apollo Theater in New York or The Howard Theatre in Washington D.C, to a run-down barn on a country back-road. It was in these settings, amidst a backdrop of segregation, that the sounds of rhythm and blues and rock'n'roll emerged and evolved, long before they captivated the world. Bobby Rush shines a light on a hugely influential network of venues that paved the way for rock'n'roll and shaped music history.

First Giving Honor To God

In this episode, Whitney sits down with Kendall Isadore, one of the first friends she made during her college years at Howard University. Together, they talk about Kendall’s powerful trio, The String Queens — a soulful and authentic strings trio that creates stimulating musical experiences that inspire diverse audiences to love, hope, feel, and imagine! Kendall shares the story of how The String Queens came to be; a story that is clearly orchestrated by God and full of right place, right time moments. But a moment that almost didn’t happen. Kendall talks about a brief moment after college where, mad at God for not delivering on his promise to use her sound to inspire people, she stopped playing her violin altogether. But God spoke a word that would change everything.  “Before that year was up, God had a word for me. He said, ‘It’s actually not about you.’” - Kendall Isadore   And with that, she picked her instrument back up. Kendall agreeing to trust God at that moment and saying yes to doing it His way opened up the entire world to her. Leading her to some of the world's greatest stages such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center.  The duo discusses Kendall’s mission as a Black woman orchestra teacher; an experience neither of them had growing up in music education programs. Kendall then shares that her goal is to give her students a world-class education because that’s what they deserve no matter their background and even if they don’t aspire to become professional musicians.  And in true Howard woman fashion, they end their conversation talking about social justice.  In 2018 Kendall launched a social impact movement called Black Kings/Queens Matter, and with the events of 2020, she knew it was the perfect time to relaunch and inspire Black Kings and Queens.  Kendall is truly making an impact. Robert Gordon is an American musician and actor, best known as a neo-rockabillysinger. Robert Gordon grew up in Bethesda, Maryland. At the age of nine, he was greatly inspired by the Elvis Presleysong "Heartbreak Hotel" playing on radio and decided to pursue a career as a Rock & Roll musician at that young age. His influences included Gene Vincent, Jack Scott, Billy Lee Riley, Eddie Cochran and other notable rock 'n roll music artists of the period. He made his recording debut at age 17 in 1964 with a group called the Confidentials. The Confidentials, with Robert (called Bob at the time) as the singer, recorded the songs "Summertime," "Money," and "There is Something on Your Mind," among others on acetate phonograph discs. When asked how he related to the 1960s, Robert replied "I didn't." He didn't care much for the British Invasionbut he identified with soul singers such as James Brown and Otis Redding whom he saw, among other great R&B acts, performing at Washington DC's famous Howard Theatre. During the turbulent times of the late 1960s, with the rioting and antiwar protests of the period, Robert served in the National Guard in Washington, D.C. "I didn't want to be sent to Vietnam," he recalls.Gordon moved to New York City in 1970 and a few years later joined a punk rock band there known as the Tuff Darts. During 1976, the Tuff Darts recorded "All for the Love of Rock and Roll", "Head over Heels", and "Slash" for a compilation album called Live at CBGB's, which included a number of other local New York City bands. That same year, Robert appeared in a punk/New Wave style film entitled Unmade Beds, an homage to Jean-Luc Godard by underground filmmaker Amos Poe. Blondie lead singer Deborah Harry also appeared in the film. Robert Gordon is currentally on tour ...

We are talking with The Coolots about their sophomore project REBIRTH. The CooLots are intersectionality personified. The Washington, D.C.-based band embodies a sound that the RAW community describes as a “melting pot of different styles and talents [that] come together to create feelings never experienced before.” The talented individuals that form this eclectic band each carry a style all their own; however, they come together to form a synergetic group that appeals to the eccentric in us all. The CooLots effortlessly move across a spectrum of genres including rock, alternative, indie, soul, and rhythm and blues, just to name a few. Their unbridled musicality is something akin to the sounds of No Doubt, M.I.A. Paramore, Sade, Staind, System of a Down, Jimi Hendrix, and N.E.R.D. Their head-bopping, hip-rocking, alternative style has given us high-energy and infectious anthems, such as America, N.U.N. and Doors. In addition to playing at prominent D.C. venues including the Howard Theatre and the Rock and Roll Hotel, The CooLots have brought their sound to the Brooklyn Museum, Rhinestone Steel in Pittsburgh, P.A. and various venues in the Northeast, earning them a national fanbase in the process. The CooLots are not here to fit in. They refuse to be bound by industry standards and societal expectations; rather, they use their platform to inspire personal evolution and growth. They are here to indulge the hip grinders, the lyrically inclined, the head bangers, the soul sisters, the punk kids and the afrofuturists. After listening to The CooLots, you will imagine yourself unlimited.
