Paralympic cyclist Alexandre Hayward (BScEng'23) had a big year in 2024: he opened the season with gold in the C3 time trial and bronze in the road race at World Cup in Australia and added a time trial bronze at a second stop in Belgium. At the track worlds in Rio, he took silver in the men's C3 scratch race. Then came the big one – the Paralympics in Paris last August, where he won the bronze medal in the men's C3 3,000-metre Individual Pursuit at the Paris velodrome. Alex burst onto the national and international Para cycling stage in 2022, after playing wheelchair basketball for New Brunswick at the Canada Winter Games and the Canadian junior team. In 2012, at the age of 16, Alex suffered an incomplete spinal cord injury, and his aspirations to pursue professional-level hockey ended. His everyday became about discovering if he'd walk and have normal body function again. Eventually, basketball, and then cycling, became a passion. Alex also graduated UNB in 2023 from the bachelor of engineering program, and spent a summer at UNB's Institute of Biomedical Engineering as an intern, and has a burgeoning interest in biomedical research. Hosts Kayla Ossachuk (BA'15) and Andrew Martel (BCS'15) chat with Alex about his story and lessons he learned, as well as how he stays motivated and mentally and physically fit. In this episode: Alex's accident and his recovery How he got into wheelchair basketball, and then cycling The experience of Paris 2024 and other world-class competitions Alex's experience in biomedical engineering at UNB and his future plans How he says motivated and fit. Carolina Hiller (Lina) is a world champion long track speed skater from Prince George. The 26-year-old Prince George Blizzard Speed Skating Club alumnus recently won the women's team sprint earlier at the ISU World Speed Skating Championships in Heerenveen, Netherlands. After graduating from high school she moved from Prince George, BC, to Calgary, AB, where she spent four years on Canada's 'Next Gen' national team program from 2017 to 2021. She was dropped from the team in 2021 and lost her national team funding, then began training at the Olympic Oval in Calgary and used this setback as a stepping stone to an eventual world championship. Having already set Canada's fastest 500-metre time this year (37.85 seconds), Carolina first arrived on the national scene as a multi-medalist in long track at the 2015 Canada Winter Games, hosted in Prince George. She spent four years on the NextGen national squad. Carolina has many competitions coming up, but her long-term goal is to represent Team Canada at the 2026 Olympics in Italy. Carolina's mom is a rider with Wheelin' Warriors of the north, so athletics runs in her family. Her twin brother Nicolas Hiller has also competed in speed skating and has been a member of Canada's national team program. Dr. Laura hosts a special episode to highlight The LiLoHia Project. She's joined by Gerald Auger and Sass Jordan, co-collaborators on The LiLoHia Project, for a conversation on exactly what the project is about, what it aims to do, and who can get involved. LiLoHia - light, love, and gratitude - is about spirituality and the rise of human consciousness, and includes episodes, concerts and healing events curated by Gerald and Sass, centered around the solstice dates (March 21, June 21, September 21, December 21).Sass Jordan explains LiLoHia was created because there is such a demand by people to understand what's happening in the world, to sort out underlying confusion and connect to oneself. Gerald Auger says “We're just fulfilling our commitment that we made to our higher power to help our fellow human beings”. Dr. Laura and her guests discuss the journey Gerald and Sass are on, the different paths people find themselves on when seeking spirituality, and what spirituality is and can be. The conversation sheds light on how all these insights weave into The LiLoHia Project. “... because we have the opportunity to have public platforms, we're just sharing our journey with anyone who's interested ... I think it's a collective growth that we're all going through. And, you know, when you can lean on each other, someone else has a question and maybe you have an answer… but beyond anything that you say, it's [that] you got to walk your talk.” - Sass JordanAbout Gerald Auger:Gerald Auger is an actor, producer, writer, entrepreneur and motivational speaker from Alberta, Canada, of Woodland Cree descent. He graduated from Grande Prairie Regional College in 1995 with a Marketing Management diploma and a Small Business Management certificate. In 1996 and 1997 Auger was awarded the National Native Role Model by the Governor General of Canada and spent the next two years visiting more than 30 communities across Canada, inspiring his aboriginal peers, relating stories about his experiences and bonding with locals through cultural events and ceremonies. After being spotted at the opening ceremonies of the 1995 Canada Winter Games, Auger was given a supporting role in the 1998 film Il mio West (later dubbed Gunslinger's Revenge), also starring David Bowie and Harvey Keitel. Filmed in Italy for Pacific Pictures, it was the first spaghetti western to use First Nations actors in aboriginal roles. In 1999 Auger became the first aboriginal recipient of the Rotary International Integrity Award for the Avenue of Nations in Alberta. Auger had a lead role in the 2002 National Geographic IMAX-production Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West, and the next year he played Crow Hunter in an episode of the four-part Hallmark Entertainment TV miniseries Dreamkeeper. In addition to being in the opening and closing ceremonies for the Arctic Winter Games as Anook the Rockman for The Heroes Journey in 2010, Auger had a role in the cult classic FUBAR 2 and played a Native guide and interpreter in Western Confidential (starring FUBAR's Paul Spence) as well as a Native policeman in The Plateau.Auger produced, wrote and directed the 2007 short film Walking Alone about the life of rapper Shawn Bernard, and the 2008 National Film Board of Canada documentary Honour Thy Father that tells the story of his conflict with the Anglican Church (which refused his late father to have a traditional native funeral), and won Best Film Representing Cultural Diversity at the Alberta Motion Picture Industry Awards in 2009.As owner and Chief Executing Officer of the business Black Eagle Entertainment, Auger plans to produce films, television series and documentaries aiming to advance the status and expose the stereotyping of his people. Auger is currently (spring 2013) working on his latest film project The Forgotten Truth of the Wilderness where he explores the idea that the Son of God was one of the greatest Sundancer's that ever lived for he was one of the first men to give his flesh to a tree.About Sass Jordan:The roots that grew Canada's Queen of Rock, Sass Jordan, started in Europe and edged across the pond to the veins of metal pulsing in the musical metallurgy of Montreal in the 70's. Montreal's burgeoning '70's scene included a ‘no holds barred' approach to glam, punk, blues, prog, metal, country, jazz, folk, with the added attraction of a homegrown sound created by the Quebecois artists of the decade, unique to the landscape and pertinent to the denizens of the period. There was no better musical place to be in the '70's- and this was the backdrop that nurtured one of the pioneers of female fronted rock – Sass Jordan. In the years since these auspicious beginnings, Sass has found herself working with and in the company of many of the people that inspired her to do what she does, amongst them the incomparable Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Steve Miller Band, Van Halen, The Foo Fighters, Cheap Trick, Santana, Joe Cocker, Styx, Rodger Hodgson, April Wine, Jeff Healy, and countless others. She has won various awards, including Juno and Billboard, and has sold over a million records world wide.Sass was a feature actor in the episodic tv show “Sisters”, and from 2003 to 2008 starred as one of the four judges on the hugely popular television series, Canadian Idol. Her songs and performances have been featured on numerous television shows, including the iconic 90's ‘Baywatch' and ‘Knight Rider', The Dennis Miller Show, and SyFy's ‘Defiance'.There are very few female singers out there that are used as an example to describe a sound/style, but Sass is one of them.Resources:Gerald Auger websiteGerald Auger on FacebookSass Jordan websiteSass Jordan on InstagramThe LiLoHia Project on YouTubeThe LiLoHia Project on InstagramThe LiLoHia Project on TwitterLearn more about Dr. Laura on her website: https://drlaura.liveFor more resources, look into Dr. Laura's organizations: Canada Career CounsellingCalgary Career CounsellingSynthesis Psychology

In this podcast, we speak with Sports Dietitian Jennifer Gibson who has worked with Olympic and Professional athletes about specific markers that are a critical part of the assessment process of her job. We discuss which markers are most commonly deficient or elevated in athletes along with specific blood work that can influence and athlete's recovery, strength, and level of inflammation. Meryeta is an Olympic champion from Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. Four years after missing her first chance to compete at the Olympic Games due to injury, in 2018 (South Korea Winter Olympics), Meryeta O'Dine was a double medallist at the Beijing 2022 Olympics. She won bronze in the women's snowboard cross event and then teamed with Eliot Grondin to win bronze in the first Olympic mixed team snowboard cross event. In the latter, O'Dine was lauded for her effort to get up and finish the final after an Italian competitor landed on her coming off a jump. O'Dine says she experienced the most difficult year of her life in 2020. Just as the world was shutting down because of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, her brother Brandon lost his battle with cancer. She struggled with anxiety and depression but with lot of self-reflection and sessions with psychologists, she re-learned how to be an Olympic-level athlete. During the 2017-18 season, O'Dine recorded eight top-10 finishes on the World Cup circuit, which included making one big final and three small finals. She also won two medals with Zoe Bergermann in the women's team snowboard cross. Named to her first Olympic team, O'Dine unfortunately didn't get the chance to compete at PyeongChang 2018 when she suffered another concussion during training just two days before her event. She still ended the season ranked a career-best 11th in the World Cup SBX standings. Having last competed in January 2020, she returned to the World Cup circuit in January 2021. She achieved a personal highlight at the 2021 World Championships where she was fourth-fastest during the qualification round, a sign that she was back to being the athlete she knows she can be. O'Dine won the overall snowboard cross title on the Nor-Am Cup circuit in 2015-16, posting three victories in nine events. She finished a personal best fourth at the 2016 Junior World Championships. A year earlier O'Dine had enjoyed one of the greatest moments of her career when she won snowboard cross gold at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George. Having turned 18 just days earlier, she had to deal with the pressure of representing her hometown on her home mountain after more than two years of buildup. Her family had put in a lot of labour to prepare the course at Tabor Mountain, which was a great learning experience as she still uses the course to train and develop. A Little More About Meryeta: Getting into the Sport: Started snowboard lessons at age 12 but really disliked it; took a full season of twice-a-week lessons to learn to love it… In that first year she only snowboarded at night because she was so embarrassed she didn't want to be at the hill when it was busy… Slowly introduced to racing in heats, her father suggested competing in the U14 category at national championships; snowboard cross was familiar to her from a background in BMX racing… At 15 won the overall title on the BC provincial tour… Outside Interests: Enjoys drawing, reading sports science books, yoga… In the off-season enjoys playing beach volleyball, swimming, biking, wakeboarding, and rock climbing… Started her own landscaping company… Supports Prince George Hospice House, which helped her brother as he neared the end of his life and gave her a place to train in their gym… Odds and Ends: Favourite quote: “Appreciate what you have before time makes you appreciate what you had”… Has a pair of lucky socks… When she first started to travel she collected snow globes from every country she visited; keeps up the habit so that when she's older she can lay them all out at Christmas… If you'd like to learn more about Meryeta or purchase some of his amazing apparel, please visit https://www.meryeta.com/

In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I chatted with Olympic Silver Medalist Laurent Dupreuil. We talked about Laurent's athletics environment growing up, his training and recovery practices, and his nutrition strategy for optimizing performance. Laurent also talked about how he has fine-tuned and improved his training practices over the years to become one of the top skating athletes in the world. Laurent Dubreuil, the current world champion in the 500m, continues to dominate on the international stage and has become Canada's most successful sprinter in the last decade. He was named the Speed Skating Canada's long track Rising Star in 2011 and received the Jeremy Wotherspoon Award for Male Long Track Athlete of the Year in 2015 and 2021. The son of Canadian long track Olympians Robert Dubreuil and Ariane Loignon, Laurent had early success, running in three World Junior Championships from 2010 to 2012 and winning four medals, including 500m gold in 2012. He finished on the podium five times for Team Quebec in the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax. The Lévis native made his World Cup debut during the 2011-2012 season and has since won a remarkable 29 medals. Despite only skating a few times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dubreuil finished his 2020-2021 season with four World Cup medals and two podium positions at the World Championships, including gold in the 500m. He became only the second Canadian male to win the 500m world title, following three-time winner Jeremy Wotherspoon. In addition, he made history by winning silver at the 2020 World Sprint Championships, becoming one of only four Canadians to reach the men's podium in the event's 50-year history. It's been a long journey for Roland Vandal, from suicide attempts and drug addiction to mentoring young Manitoba boxers at the Canada Winter Games. The coach of the Team Manitoba squad travels the country giving talks to young people about his recovery from addiction, and makes the case that boxing can rescue teens who might follow his path. He says he dropped out of his sport at 13 years of age and descended into a life of drug addiction. Vandal recalls reaching a personal low in May 15, 2002, the day he went into a violent seizure after drinking a bottle of methadone and woke up barely breathing on a dirty bathroom floor in a cheap hotel. “That was the wake-up call. I haven't touched a drop of drugs or alcohol since,” he said during a training session at the Games in Halifax. After treatment at a Winnipeg detoxification centre, he returned to the sport at 31 and has since become a coach, motivational speaker, foster parent and guide to “kids at risk.” “I always had the yearning to go back to boxing. It was in my blood,” he said. “It's changed my life. It gives me focus and direction and a sense of commitment and accountability to the boys.” Vandal's website, breakingthechain.ca, says he's given hundreds of motivational talks. “Our ultimate goal is to inspire people to make the right choices,” says the site. Matt Bonne said Vandal's blunt words help keep him off the streets. The 15-year-old Manitoba boxer said he's gone from selling drugs to other teenagers to competing for his province at the Games. “I turned my life around and I realized this is the life for me. This is the life I'd rather have,” Bonne said. While the sport may not be genteel, Vandal argues it's often a bridge from street life to success. Bonne said being asked to try out for the Canada Winter Games helped him avoid a return to using drugs last year. “The Canada Games came along as an opportunity and my coach asked me to be in that…I started training again and here I am,” he said. The young athlete was eliminated in the early rounds of the 56-kilogram weight class but was pleased with his personal improvement in his sport. “Compared to how I was before I just changed around to a brighter side.” Julien Carneiro, a 15-year-old boxer from Winnipeg, also argues that boxing pulls teenagers out of street life. “A lot of the kids on the street get into street life…So boxing is a good way out of that because you get to still fight, which brings out the animal in you,” he said. Vandal chimes in: “Boxing takes the fight out of the kid. It doesn't put the fight into the kid.” Vandal's body is covered with tattoos, including images of his son and of his website. It's a reminder his life of addiction is over, he says. “I got too much to lose these days,” he said. When a moment of doubt enters his mind, he recalls the turning point, lying on that filthy floor wondering if he would live another day. “I remember when I was dying on that bathroom floor. I thought of those coaches and those principals and all of those people who helped me,” he said. “Now I really believe it's my duty to pay it forward.” You can follow the show over on Instagram @depthsofdarkside or email to inquire about being on the show at depthsofdarkside@gmail.com The intro is provided by good friend John Maksym and you can follow his journey on IG @johnmaksymusic --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lightofsuccess/message

Alison Goring likes to be around people. Socializing was also a form of sports psychology. She couldn't face the alternative of quiet solitude in a hotel room the night before a big game. Marilyn Bodogh may have appeared brash, opinionated, outspoken or a little unfiltered. But behind the newsworthy quotes and smiles for the camera was a competitive drive to rival any of her contemporaries. Learning the game in St. Catherines, Marilyn and her older sister Christine had early junior success, reaching the Canada Winter Games in 1971. In 1980 the sisters appeared in the Canadian Ladies Curling Association Championship (two years before Scott Paper took over sponsorship). Marilyn eventually moved to skipping and in 1986 she led Christine, Kathy McEdwards and Jan Augustyn to victory at the Scott Tournament of Hearts in London, Ontario. Gold would follow at the Worlds in Kelowna, but it would be another 10 years before Marilyn captured another Scotties, then teamed with Kim Gellard, Corie Beveridge and Jane Hooper-Perroud. In Part 1 we'll cover the early years, the major victories, and teach listeners how to curl in kilts.
