Life (UN)Closeted: LGBTQ & Heterosexual Coming Out Stories & Advice for coming out of life's closets!

You have to be hiding under a rock and not listening to not know that Trans voices are under attack which only means, the entire queer community is under attack. Giving voice to the Trans community, TJ Billard shares their new book Voices For Transgender Equality: Making Change In The Network Public Sphere. This is great episode to learn about why and how to support our trans brothers and sisters. About TJ TJ Billard is an Assistant Professor and William T. Grant Scholar in the School of Communication and, by courtesy, the Department of Sociology at Northwestern University, where they are affiliated with the Institute for Policy Research and the Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing. Outside of Northwestern, they are the founding Executive Director of the Center for Applied Transgender Studies in Chicago—the leading academic organization dedicated to scholarship on the social, cultural, and political conditions of transgender life—and Editor-in-Chief of the Center's flagship journal, the Bulletin of Applied Transgender Studies. Billard's research spans political communication, the sociology of social movements, and transgender studies, with a primary focus on the relationship between media and transgender politics in the United States and United Kingdom. They also conduct research on typography and graphic design, with an emphasis on the role of design in political branding. Billard is the author of Voices for Transgender Equality: Making Change in the Networked Public Sphere (Oxford University Press, 2024). The book offers an insider's view into transgender activism during the first two years of the Trump administration, during which trans people were thrust onto the center stage of US politics. Drawing on extensive on-the-ground observation at the National Center for Transgender Equality, Voices for Transgender Equality shows how these activists developed an unlikely blend of online and offline strategies to saturate a diverse ecology of national news outlets, local and community media outlets across the country, and both public and private conversations across multiple social media platforms with voices in support of their cause. Billard is also co-editor (with Silvio Waisbord) of Public Scholarship in Communication Studies (University of Illinois Press, 2024). Taking the position that “public scholarship” should not prioritize publicity for scholars and their ideas, but rather should prioritize serving the public good in ways that go beyond conventional scholarly work, the volume brings together an all-star cast of public scholars to offer both critical meditations on the role and importance of public scholarship in communication studies' various subfields and “how-to” guides for enacting public scholarship. Billard's current research project, tentatively titled Cisinformed: Disinformation and the Media War on Transgender Rights, focuses on the central role of misinformation in anti-transgender movements' political strategies in both the US and UK, why these strategies work, and what can be done to curb misinformation's influence on policy and public opinion. This research is supported by a five-year award from the William T. Grant Foundation's Scholars program. Billard's research has appeared in a number of prominent academic publications spanning several fields, including Communication Monographs, Digital Journalism, Frontiers in Psychology, the International Journal of Communication, The International Journal of Press/Politics, JCMS: Journal of Cinema and Media Studies, the Journal of Social History, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Marketing Theory, Mass Communication and Society, Media, Culture & Society, and Politics, Groups, and Identities, as well as in venues such as the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Politics and the SAGE Encyclopedia of Trans Studies. Billard received their PhD from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the...

(0:07:16) - The Emotional Toll of Being Misgendered Gender socialization, gaslighting, misalignment of identity, media sensationalism, and trans suicide rate are discussed to explore mental health impacts. (0:16:30) - Advocating for Trans Voices in Society Trans and intersex experiences, gender socialization's impact on mental health, and transitioning as a positive step towards happiness are discussed. Ever paused to consider how your everyday choices, from your morning routine to the clothes you put on, are a reflection of your social identity? Just as we make these daily decisions, imagine the plight of our transgender friends, faced with the relentless challenge of aligning their physical appearance with their inner identity. As we peel back the layers of gender socialization and its impact on mental health, our special guest, an individual who identifies as transgender, brings their personal journey into the lime light. Through their experiences, we dig into the torment of being misgendered and gaslighting, two harsh realities that are a part of their daily narrative. As we journey deeper, there's no shying away from the alarming statistics. The suicide rate within the transgender community is disconcertingly high, a bitter fact that highlights the urgent need for acceptance and understanding. So, what can we do about it? It's about amplifying trans voices in our society and fostering inclusive conversations. We explore the much-needed space for these narratives in our societal discourse, signaling a call to action for each one of us. The change begins with understanding. Hi Plant Friends and welcome to another episode of the PBN Podcast. I am your host Robbie Lockie. On this weeks episode we meet the bubbly and colourful vegan Jasmin Singer. At the age of twenty-four, Jasmin Singer turned to veganism after watching a film about factory farming. Learning about the horrors of the dairy and egg production led her to incorporate animal rights into her LGBTQ+ and feminist activism. Jasmin then began volunteering at PETA's headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia, and began steering her career toward animal rights activism. As well as being a leading expert, Jasmin Singer is now a hugely visible presence within the vegan community. She is a coveted speaker on topics including radical body positivity, personal narrative as a means of social justice, and how to change the world for animals. She is also the author of The VegNews Guide to Being a Fabulous Vegan and Always Too Much and Never Enough: A Memoir. Along with her co-host Mariann Sullivan, Jasmin and her team continue to “change the world for animals” on the long-running, award-winning podcast, Our Hen House. I was fortunate to feature on one of their episodes, I will link it down in the show notes. Jasmin's incredible contribution to animal rights does not stop there. She is the former Senior Editor for VegNews Magazine and the longtime love columnist and celebrity interviewer. In 2020, Jasmin had the enviable job of interviewing actor Joaquin Phoenix, who had used his prominence to not only effectively veganize the menu at the Academy Awards, but also treat his acceptance speech as a way of sharing his concerns for animal rights issues. You may well have seen Jasmin appearing in various documentaries such as The Ghosts In Our Machine and Vegucated. She has also contributed to many anthologies such as Running Eating Thinking; Defiant Daughters; Voices for Animal Liberation; Queer & Trans Voices; and Circles of Compassion. As an actor, Jasmin starred in the film The Bra Mitzvah and has appeared in television commercials. She holds a BFA in Acting from Pace University, and is a certified holistic health counsellor. Jasmin is a long-time activist across many realms, including animal activism, LGBTQ activism, and antiracism. As always if you love this episode please don't forget to comment, like and share and if you are on Apple Podcasts please do leave us a review it really helps get the message out there. Don't forget: Patreons who support with just $3 per month and above get exclusive weekly bonus content, too. Literally, every pledge sends me into an excited squeal of delight. patreon.com/sgrpodcast Zena Sharman, editor of "The Remedy: Queer and Trans Voices on Health and Health Care," is here talking about queer and trans health issues, community-based care, and oppression within the medical community. We geek out about trauma-informed care and talk about why cis straight men are really suffering inside these systems, too, based on the statistics. What does it look like to have healthcare informed by community, disability justice, racial justice, fat justice, and trauma? Zena has some stories and amazing ideas to get the activist in all of us going. How do we start asking, "Who are you and what's important to you?" instead of assuming what kinds of care and cures someone might want? Change is on the horizon, but we need to start looking at different possibilities that include kinky folks and poly folks and people of color among so many other intersections of oppression. When this happens, our sexual health and our mental health would improve drastically. Ready to dive in? Me too! Follow Sex Gets Real on Twitter and Facebook. It's true. Oh! And Dawn is on Instagram.
