Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 108-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 23,084 on turnover of $5.9-billion N-T. Shares closed higher on Monday despite Chinese military drills around Taiwan. Large-cap tech stocks appeared resilient amid optimism toward an investor conference scheduled by TSMC Thursday, where the chipmaker could give positive leads in the current boom of an artificial intelligence era. MAC condemns China's sanctioning of Taiwan businessman, lawmaker The Mainland Affairs Council on Monday condemned China over its sanctioning of Taiwanese businessman Robert Tsao and DPP Legislator Puma Shen, calling the move detrimental to cross-strait relations. In a statement, the MAC said the Republic of China is a sovereign country and that attempts to undermine (破壞) a free and democratic society will only drive the two sides further apart. It made the remarks after China announced earlier in the day the imposition of sanctions including an entry ban on Tsao and Shen for being "Taiwan independence die-hards." The Taiwan Affairs Office in China may have been referring to the Kuma Academy, a war-preparedness organization established by Shen and supported by Tsao, the founder of contract chipmaker United Microelectronics Corp. In 2022, Tsao made aT$1 billion NT donation to the academy, a volunteer civilian training organization with a mission to "prepare a pre-war mentality for civilians and cultivate self-defense capability." UN Concerned as Israel Fires on UN Peacekeepers The U.N. Security Council expressed “strong concern” as Israel has fired on and wounded U.N. peacekeepers in southern Lebanon during intensified fighting. It reiterated its support for their role in supporting security in the region. The statement Monday is the first by the U.N.'s most powerful body since Israel began firing on the positions of the peacekeeping force. The U.N. peacekeeping chief told reporters that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres confirmed Monday that peacekeepers will remain in all their positions even as Israel has urged the peacekeepers to move north. Israel has been escalating its campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon across a U.N.-drawn boundary (邊界) between the two countries. Hurricane Helene clean-up efforts hampered by 'armed militia' groups Hurricane relief workers in the US state of North Carolina have been evacuated following threats from 'armed militia'. This comes as US authorities are trying to stem a flow of false claims circulating (散佈) about the government's response to recent storms - including some made by former president Donald Trump. Sally Patterson reports. Kenya Protests Against Nuclear Plant Dozens have rallied against a proposal to build Kenya's first nuclear power plant in one of the country's top coastal tourist hubs. Muslim for Human Rights led the march Friday in the town of Kilifi to the county governor's office where they handed him a petition (請願書,) opposing the construction of the plant. Kilifi County is also home to Arabuko Sokoke forest, which is on the tentative list of the UNESCO World Heritage sites, as a significant natural habitat for the conservation of rare and endangered species. The construction of the plant is set to begin in 2027 and be operational by 2034, at a cost of about $3.8 billion US dollars. That was the I.C.R.T.

This evening on Africa at A Glance we talk about a new investigation by BBC Africa Eye, for BBC World Service, that has uncovered cases of elderly people being murdered and attacked after being falsely accused of witchcraft along Kenya's Kilifi coast. Violent attacks on supposed witches occur across paths of Africa and beyond, but the estimated 70 deaths reported here every year are about much more than fear of the supernatural. Meeting victims, relatives and even perpetrators, #BBCAfricaEye investigates the real motives fuelling these brutal incidents and the impunity that often enables them, revealing that many elderly victims are targeted not by strangers, but the very people who should be protecting them - their own families. Joining us for this discussion is Julius Wanyama, who works at human rights organisation called Haki Yetu. Julius is featured in the film and his organisation published an extensive report on witchcraft accusations of the elderly in Kenya, and Nicola ‘Nicky' Milne, is the Executive Producer and Director of this film. The film is produced by ‘BBC World Service / BBC Africa Eye: and it's called ‘Cry Witch: Take My Land, Take My Life'.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Is nuclear power a possible answer to the challenge of phasing out fossil fuels in response to global warming? Many African governments say yes – and 18 are now in the feasibility stage of developing nuclear power stations. Currently, South Africa is the only country on the continent which generates electricity from a nuclear power plant. But activists argue there are too many risks – and that Africa lacks the capacity to dispose of the waste nuclear power produces. In Kenya, residents of Uyombo village in Kilifi are opposing the development of a power plant in their area – even though its construction is only due to start in 2027. The government says when – or if – it comes online, it should generate 1000 megawatts of electricity, nearly a third of the energy Kenya currently produces. For the Africa Daily podcast, Alan Kasujja speaks to renowned environmental activist Phyllis Omido, who is leading the campaign against the project. He also speaks to Justus Wabuyabo, the head of Kenya's Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA), the body tasked by the government with developing nuclear energy in the country.

‘Unique' is often overused as a word, but host Cathy Booth's guests on this wonderful episode, John, and Debbie, can certainly claim it for their ringing experience. That's because they ring at St Thomas's Church, Kilifi in Kenya which is one of the remotest rings of bells in the world, with the nearest bells hung for change ringing being at Harare in Zimbabwe over 1,000 miles away.Cathy learns about the fascinating history of the church and the bells, as well as hearing how John and Debbie became ringers, their learning experience, and their amazing ringing trips to the UK.Although much will be familiar to other ringers, such as the ringing room with its set of handbells, cabinet of ringing books and bottomless sweet tin, there are also some eye-opening challenges of ringing in a tower that is, well, unique! If you are beginning to take ringing a little bit for granted, this podcast will stop you in your tracks and possibly rekindle your romance.Top takeawaysRead all about the Kilifi ringers 2015 adventures in the UK The Whiting Society of Ringers - KilifiCheck out the bells on DOVE Tower details (cccbr.org.uk)Struggling to ring or explain plain hunt to a learner? Today's episode was recorded live at the fabulous Distant Relatives Ecolodge & Backpackers in Kilifi, Kenya. With numerous awards and accolades to it's name, I was keen to visit Distant Relatives after meeting up with today's guest at the Sustainable Africa Tourism Summit recently. We hear so many examples of high end luxury properties being super sustainable and regenerative and I'm mindful that there are far more travellers and indeed properties without high end budgets yet dedicated to more eco options. After a full tour of the property and a wonderful 2 night stay, I sat down with Distant Relatives' CEO, Mwanase, to learn more about the property, their ethos and their journey. As you can probably tell, I was absolutely in love with what they have created here in this beautiful part of Kenya and I will absolutely return one day. If you'd like to learn more about Distant Relatives, then I would encourage you to visithttps://www.kilifibackpackers.com And you can join Mwanase, Distant Relatives and hundreds more like-minded people and organisations by joining Climate Friendly Travel and indeed become an ambassador by signing up to join The SunX Registry at , climatefriendly.travel or email us at info@thesunprogram.com That's our show for this week.

Today we head over to Kenya where I recently provided the keynote talk at the Sustainable Africa Tourism Summit. After a week of meetings I took the opportunity to visit Tsavo National Park which is the largest national park in Kenya and also happens to be in its lowe season right now. Located just a 2 hour drive from Mombasa, Tsavo in the low season months has everything which you would expect to find of a major national park in East Africa with just one exception – crowds. In this episode recorded live at Voi Wildlife Lodge in Tsavo East, I talk through my experience of the low season here in Kenya and, as you will hear, got a little too close to the wildlife for my liking, in the process! And you can learn more Kenya during the low season months in a forthcoming article in Low Season Traveller Magazine as well as a new guide which we will be producing at a later date. To learn more about Voi Wildlife Lodge, please visit https://voiwildlifelodge.com Next time, we head over to Kilifi in Kenya to visit one of the most eco-conscious properties I have ever stayed in, Distant Relatives. But That's our show for this week. Thanks as always, for your company, and if you enjoyed this podcast, please do leave us a positive rating and review on your podcast app and also don't forget to follow us on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to be the first to hear our latest low season stories, articles and guides. Have a great week wherever you are and remember that travel is always better and fairer for the planet, the local communities and you the travellers, when it's without the crowds…

We know how important it is to be inspired by both big businesses and individuals, which is why we are excited to present Talking Leaders, a bi-monthly initiative from the AHDB which will see a series of inspirational speakers share their life experiences and deliver impactful stories to the AgriLeader community. In our August broadcast, Hampshire pig farmer and Young National Pig Association (YNPA) vice-chair, Flavian Obiero, will be joining us to share his passion for getting people from a non-traditional background interested in agriculture. Flavian grew up in the coastal town of Kilifi, Kenya, and it had never crossed his mind that pig farming, especially in the UK, would become such an important part of his life. But after an accidental weeks' work experience, the rest, as they say is history! Flavian now has twelve years of expertise in the pig industry and is based on a pig unit near Basingstoke. He is particularly interested in marketing and adding value to pork. He is also passionate about increasing diversity in British agriculture. Knowing what it entails to break through in such a long-established industry, Flavian is passionate about increasing diversity in British agriculture and believes it is a win-win for everyone. Flavian believes building a brand to market and showcase the sector as progressive and professional is the only way to get the public onside and to extract the value from the market. To achieve this, you need to be able to identify with your customer. Join us to explore this topic in more detail and to hear about Flavian's own experiences and challenges, as well why diversity in agriculture is so important.

Mental-health researcher Mary Bitta uses art and artistic performance to tackle public mistrust in science across communities in Kilifi, Kenya. This distrust can extend to procedures such as taking blood and saliva samples, and also to mental-health problems, which many people think are caused by witchcraft — evil spirits or curses from parents or grandparents, she says.Such beliefs account for mental health not being prioritized by policymakers, she adds. But change is afoot.“In the last five years alone, we've had policy documents specifically for mental health. There's also been progress in amending legislation. For example, there has been a recent lobby to decriminalize suicide because, as we speak, suicide is illegal in Kenya,” she says.Bitta tells Akin Jimoh, chief editor of Nature Africa, how she uses a form of participatory action research — in which communities are involved in song, dance, video and radio productions — to change attitudes to mental health. This is the final episode of an eight-part podcast series on science in Africa. Lisa A.Tuaitanu currently lives in Pleasant Grove Utah with her husband Kilifi. They are the parents of 5 children and 3 grandchildren and anxiously awaiting the arrival of number 4 this spring. I will be sharing events that took place October 2011- April 2012 Ashley, a healthy college student was hospitalized with a rare condition called Lemierre's Syndrome. In this mortal journey we are called to do difficult things that try our faith. Sometimes small and other times life consuming. So thankful for our amazing family and friends. Through kindness, patience, faith, and sometimes just determination we all strengthened each other. So thankful for Heaven's hands on earth. Folded hands that prayed. Working hands that served with love. Comforting hands that held our trembling hands. But most of all thankful for the pierced hands of our Lord and Savior, who has suffered for us all that we can be free of our pain, suffering, and find comfort and peace in Him.

In Africa, in children hospitalised with severe pneumonia with oxygen saturations between 80 and 91% who did not receive oxygen, mortality assessed at 48 h (1.4%) was comparable to the usual method of oxygen delivery (low-flow oxygen; LFO (2.5%)) and in those receiving high-flow nasal therapy (HFNT, 1.1%). The potential impact of HFNT on patient-centred outcomes and on resources, particularly oxygen supplies, should stimulate further exploration particularly in children with severe pneumonia managed in low resource settings. Kilifi county in Kenya has three practicing mental health specialists against a population of about 1.4 million. Mental health is allocated less than 0.5% of the general health budget. In Kenya, out of 47 counties, only 22 have a mental health specialist. “Understanding your mental health, gives you a better standard of life. But though Mental health is part of the general health system, very little funding is made available compared to fields like maternal and child health, reproductive issues, TB, and HIV, including funds for specialist training. Mental health is neglected right from the policy level,” says Leonard Nasoro, a mental health specialist from Kilifi, Kenya. Late diagnosis heavily impacts service delivery and dealing with mental health. But why are there very few experts? Elias Fondo, the Kilifi County Mental Health Clinical officerwarns that with the rising mental illness burden, the institutional-based form of managing mental health will not work “but rather investing in community psychiatry to help identify early symptoms of mental illnesses among their communities to and advise them to seek help on time.”
This week's episode takes you to Kilifi, Kenya - home to Watamu and Malindi's sandy beaches. The only permanent river - River Sabaki - emanating from Kenya's Aberdare Ranges west of Central Kenya floods each time it heavily rains upstream. Now, the 2018 Kilifi County Drought contingency plan notes that the drought return period has reduced to two to three years from every five to seven years in the last decade. Between 2016 to 2020, Kilifi County experienced a devastating drought that leads to massive pasture loss and cattle deaths, with nearly half a million people affected. With the county alternating between droughts and flash floods, what impacts does this have on communities? Listen to their voices.

When Swiss beatmaker FlexFab was doing a set in the coastal town of Kilifi, Kenya, a young Kenyan rapper Ziller Bas grabbed the mike and delivered his "Swengflow". The chemistry was immediate and six months later the two artists are set to release their debut EP Mugogo! A dancefloor must. Pablo Fernandez, who's been working under the moniker FlexFab for a decade or so, likes to work outside his comfort zone. He's lent his beatmaking skills to Kenya's Muthoni Drummer Queen, Batuk from South Africa, rapper Rozzma from Egypt, Malaysian singer The Venopian Solitude... In August 2019, a Swiss music non-profit, Flee, invited him to East Africa for a series of exchanges with local musicians. During a gig in Kilifi, some 70kms north of Mombasa, Baraka Shujaa, an MC going under the name Ziller Bas couldn't resist joining in. "The beats were so good, I was so excited I had to jump in," the 25-year old rapper said on the line from Kilifi. "This freestyle session with Ziller Bas was magic, the kind of moment that only happens a few times in your life," FlexFab said. He found a way to return to Kilifi in January this year with a mobile studio. In just two weeks they recorded 14 tracks, a documentary about their story and three videos. Their EP Mugogo part 1 has four tracks for hot club nights. Ziller Bas lays down his vocals in his very own Swengflow: a mix of Swahili, English and his native Giriama. The title track Mugogo has a hypnotic beat, with traditional percussion from shakers known locally as kayamba which Flexfab recorded live when doing the final mix. "I didn't sample music, all the songs are original," he said. "There's some synthesizer, a lot of electronic things but a big part of the job I did at the end of the project was to add some live percussion." "Mugogo means great, like the king, someone magical, noble, with dignity," Ziller Bas explained. "It's derived from a leader here in Mijikenda called Karissa Maita." Maita was a former tourism minister and an MP from Mombasa's kisauni area known affectionately as "Mugogo, wa pwani": Mijikenda for "Big Man of the Coast". He was a popular politician who defended the interests of coastal peoples, encouraging them to speak out about the politics of exclusion. The track Sawa Sawa means OK in Swahili: an upbeat, positive song "about feeling good," Ziller Bas said. Vituko meanwhile is "very poetic and more political. It talks about challenges in the hood, in the ghetto here, how people live. It's giving people hope, talking about difficulties and telling them they shouldn't give up." Due to the coronavirus the duo are releasing this first EP with four rather than the initial seven tracks and Mugogo part 2 should be out in the Autumn. "When the crisis is over I hope Ziller Bas can come to Europe to do festivals with me and spread the project live. It has to be live, to be enjoyed with the people." Mugogo part 1 is out on 12 June. Kenya has named two popular tourism destinations among regions at high risk of coronavirus outbreak. According to local media reports, the coastal towns of Mombasa and Kilifi, which have a high influx of tourists, have been placed on high alert. The country's capital, Nairobi, is also listed as a high risk area because of its main airport. Kenya's head of disease surveillance, Dr Daniel Lang'at, is quoted as saying the border regions in the western and north-eastern parts of the country are also at risk. The country is yet to record any confirmed case of coronavirus. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/newscast-africa/support Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
So. On one of Kevin Marsh's regular visits to Oxford, the historian Conrad Keating caught up with the world-renowned malariologist and asked him what initially drew him to tropical medicine... Africa is the world's most malarious continent, and the east coast of Kenya has been particularly debilitated by the disease. In 1987 Kevin Marsh visited the area and recognised that the region offered great possibilities for an integrated programme of research on malaria that linked basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological approaches. In collaboration with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and Oxford University, and supported by the Wellcome Trust, a small, dedicated team began work in 1989. From modest beginnings in Kilifi, the Wellcome Research Programme has grown under Kevin Marsh's direction to become the most prestigious research programme in Africa. Its state-of-the-art laboratory houses 800 staff who produce over 100 peer review papers a year, working on major causes of ill health in Kenya and other countries in east Africa.
Dr Simon Ndirangu, Bioanalytical Laboratory at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI)/Wellcome Trust Research Programme in Kilifi, Kenya discusses the importance of implementing occupational health and safety standards in research settings. Effective occupational health and safety programmes reduce work related injuries and illnesses, improve morale and productivity and reduce workers' compensation costs. The success of these programmes relies on committed management, adequate risk assessment, hazard prevention and control and appropriate health and safety training.
Dr Roma Chilengi, Head of Clinical Trials at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI)/Wellcome Trust Research Programme in Kilifi, Kenya gives an introduction to research ethics. This overview covers the historical origins and landmark events that have influenced current understanding of research ethics. Some of the major ethical codes and fundamental ethical principles are identified and their application in research is discussed. Finally, there is an overview of the role of ethics committees.
