Today, we are welcoming Jeanette Metzler and Lisa Cummings to the show, where they open their hearts about what made them decide that their life mission was to help our communities feel well. Jeanette is the Community Benefit Manager at AdventHealth in Kansas City, and Lisa is the Wellness Manager at AdventHealth in Kansas City – both roles that immerse themselves in community outreach programs all over the metro. We invite you to listen in as they reveal what inspired them to start helping people find that higher quality of life, which goes beyond just regular doctor's visits and instead propels each person forward into their best lives. They share heartwarming stories of moments they've encountered within the Kansas City communities that have impacted their own roles and purpose on earth – everything from the simple act of listening to the community to watching kids bloom when the resources and support are provided for them. Three Takeaways: People typically feel frustrated after their wellness check-ups. They find out the problem but are not always sure what to do next. AdventHealth is doing something to end that cycle for its patients. We may not always get to see the seeds we plant in someone's life come to fruition, but we can trust that good will come from it - even from the smallest of seeds. AdventHealth chooses to focus on two Kansas City neighborhoods at a time, and the impact they have seen happen by simply making resources more available in these neighborhoods is both moving and inspiring for other healthcare companies to follow. Having great skin is about more than just great skin care products. If your diet isn't right, if you're not moving your body enough, even if your mental health is not in great shape, then that's all likely going to show up on your skin. But sexual wellness might be a free (and fun) contributor to getting your glow on – so why aren't more skincare brands pushing this agenda? Studies have shown that sexual encounters (with a partner or on our own) have long-term skin benefits beyond causing that immediate glow. Self-pleasure can lead to a release of oxytocin, which lowers cortisol levels, leads to better sleep, and helps the skin repair itself. We speak to Erika Schwass, Science and Wellness Manager for clean-beauty brand Consonant Wellness, about:The science behind how our sexual release can improve our skin health by releasing estrogen, oxytocin, and other skin-enhancing hormones. How we can overcome the stigma of self-pleasure.Surprising facts: The anatomy of the female clitoris wasn't fully discovered until the 2000s.Consonant skincare's new “Come and Glow” kit.

Elizabeth Ross Holmstrom “We are on the cusp of a major shift in business management and leadership practices; moving from boss leadership to service leadership, and employers are hustling hard to catch up. I serve CEOs who are invested in improving the employee experience and their business.” Elizabeth is a natural entrepreneur, connector and systems change architect. She has over 20 years of experience in leadership engagement and wellness program implementation, has managed national account relationships and served as VP, Senior Health and Wellness Manager at a national bank with 26,000 employees. She left the corporate world after realizing that her efforts were not addressing the root cause of the problems she saw every day: stress, burnout, overwhelm. After years of research and a successful pilot program, Elizabeth was committed to focusing full time on bringing powerful pauses into the workplace. Knowing that not every company can hire a Chief Mindfulness Officer like Google or Aetna, Elizabeth launched BreakTogether to help even the smallest businesses thrive. Through that work, she observed a growing field of professionals focused on improving the employee experience in the workplace through mindfulness and leadership development programs; howver, there were very few people helping employers connect the dots – across different service deliveries, departments, or line items. She saw a need to work on this more systemically, and architect a way for small and medium size businesses to access resources collaboratively, affordably, and strategically. This need is the foundation for the Mindful Employer Designation and Collaborative. Outside of work, Elizabeth finds balance through spending time with family and community, mountain biking, cooking, singing, and quarry swimming along the coast of Maine. https://www.breaktogether.net/about/ https://www.breaktogether.net/break-together-podcasts/ Listen to another #12minconvo

Today I'm joined by Natalie Boehm, the Health and Wellness Manager at Snowy Hydro, Australia's largest hydro-electricity generator, supplying almost 40% of Australia's renewable electricity. With operations spanning three states and some pretty remote areas, Snowy is a pretty unique kind of business. Nat will be speaking at the 2018 OHS Leaders Summit which is being held on the 7th and 8th March in the Gold Coast on the topic of health and wellness and the all important question of how to decide what to focus on. The OHS Leaders Summit is the only event in Australia specifically designed for the Group Heads of health, safety and wellbeing. It offers a unique combination of standout speakers, industry thought leaders, networking and personalised meetings with the leading suppliers of products and services, meaning you can leverage the best of what's out there to help your health, safety and wellbeing programs succeed. Visit ohsleaders.com.au to find out more and get your seat - spots are limited. Here's Natalie: Some people suggest I don't ask tough enough questions. I dug deeper on that today, did I create some discomfort for you? I'd love to hear what you thought. Before my takeaways, I wanted to talk about name calling. Some people recently have started calling me names, but in a good way. Two of them are innovative, and pioneering. I'm not big on fancy adjectives, but it does give me some insight into how people perceive my mission and how I go about it. One of the things I like to do, is break the pattern, to help people see what new & different might look like when it comes to you and your teams performance. If you have an annual strategy session, planning days, internal conferences, professional development workshops, or if you have none of these but want some help to boost the effectiveness of your team, I've got plenty of value to offer, and guarantee it will not be your standard boring presentation, training or workshop. If you are ready to move away from your status quo to something better, send me an email, andrew@safetyontap.com and let's see what we can do together. Here's my takeaways from that chat with Nat Boehm: Takeaway #1: Where's the H in your health and safety practice? I might have sounded critical when we were discussing the absent H, believe me I'm not, I am one of those health and safety people who has been traditionally biased towards safety, because that’s what I was more familiar, more confident, and more competent in. The role of a leader is not to do everything yourself, but to lead the people who can do what they are best at. So if health is not your strong point, and it needs a boost in your organisation, be a leader by working on executive support, and either delegating the doing to specialists, or developing that capability internally. Takeaway #2: Are the humans at the centre of what you do? Traditional health and safety, and arguably traditional approaches to work, try and standardise & systematise everything, which means the humans aren't seen, heard, and treated as individuals. It's a bit of a paradox that we need standardising and systematising, but your job as a leader is to preserve the focus on individuals humans too. Takeaway #3: Data helps decisions. Again this might seem like a paradox when we talk about preserving focus on individuals, but having qualitative and quantitative data about the health of the workforce overall helps you identify your priorities, to engage your organisations leaders and to get the resources required to make a measurable impact on the health of your workforce. I still see well meaning fruit bowls and stock-standard EAP programs all over the place, which help us feel like we’re doing something, but are usually as effective as painting everything at your workplace in safety yellow or orange. We can do better than that. Data helps decisions. Until next time, what's the one thing you'll do to take positive, effective or rewarding action, to grow yourself, and drastically improve health and safety along the way. Seeya! Kelly Hogan is the Clinical Nutrition and Wellness Manager at the Dubin Breast Center at Mountain Sinai in New York City. It’s a long title—but it basically means she’s a super smart registered dietitian who wants to help people establish non-diet lifestyles. On this episode, she talks about what that means and how that idea helped her figure out her own food philosophy. Kelly also talks about how she became an R.D.—including how she made a major career change and went back to school while working full-time—and she shares a day in the life of her own diet. We play a game [I made up] called Wellness World Word Association, where Kelly offers up her take on everything from #cleaneats, cheat days, and the new documentary What the Health to Goop and apple cider vinegar, and Kelly breaks down the difference between an R.D., a nutritionist, and a health coach—plus what you should understand about each. Kelly is a also many-time marathoner, so we talk about where she’s at with running right now, how her relationship with running has evolved over time, and how adopting a puppy—Peanut!—changed the game.
