The Ezra Klein Show

This episode is about a seemingly simple question: Was there a Joe Biden cover-up?Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson's new book argues there was. “Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again” details how Biden's top advisers closed the circle around him and tried to conceal the extent of his decline. But I think the story here is more complicated. If Biden's top advisers were misleading the public, I think they were also lying to themselves. And if there was a cover-up, it had a lot of holes; voters had been telling pollsters they were worried about Biden's age for years. So I wanted to have Tapper on the show to talk about the discoveries in his book, but also about some of the bigger questions raised by the Democratic Party's decision to almost renominate Biden: How do you see what is right in front of your eyes? How do you avoid letting loyalty to a person or a party blind you? This episode contains strong language.Mentioned:“Democrats Have a Better Option Than Biden” by Ezra Klein“Behind Closed Doors, Biden Shows Signs of Slipping” by Annie Linskey and Siobhan HughesBook Recommendations:Lorne by Susan MorrisonHitler's People by Richard EvansThe Holy Roller by Andy Samberg, Joe Trohman and Rick RemenderThoughts? Nick takes a hilarious stroll down memory lane to the night Peyton Manning traded his helmet for a hosting gig on Saturday Night Live. From Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler dishing it out as the "Bronx Beat" ladies, to Andy Samberg's wild take on Sanjaya and a surprise visit from Dan Aykroyd, the show was packed with standout moments. Things get especially weird (and wonderful) when Manning joins Kristin Wiig for a late-night sketch that goes completely off the rails. But the real showstoppers? That infamous United Way spoof where Manning's tough love with a bunch of kids turns into comic gold, and Will Forte's unforgettable dance-floor meltdown in the Locker Room sketch—one he still calls a personal favorite. With clips, commentary, and memories from both Manning and Forte, this one's a winning highlight reel from a surprisingly game host. [EP 123]

Andrew Buss has carved out a niche for himself as a pop culture expert, with a heavy emphasis on comedy. He has written for publications like Vanity Fair, New York Magazine's Vulture, The Daily Beast, Consequence of Sound, and The Laugh Button, where he served as editor for five years. As a journalist, Andrew has conducted interviews with some of the most prominent names in entertainment, including Mel Brooks, Seth Rogen, Nikki Glaser, Conan O'Brien, Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Emma Stone, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Brendan Fraser, Jonah Hill, Bo Burnham, and countless others. In this interview, we talk about his writing and journalism journey, his new book I AM MCLOVIN, the legacy of SUPERBAD. When Superbad was released on August 17th in 2007, it proved itself to be a massive success right out of the gate, especially for those in the film's target millennial demographic. The film wound up dominating at the box office, bringing in $170 million dollars worldwide, against a $20 million dollar budget. It also launched the careers of Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Emma Stone, Bill Hader, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Seth Rogen whose careers are all thriving to this day. It further proved that Judd Apatow is now one of the most successful film producers of his generation, bringing the world hit after hit. Superbad remains, to this day, a beloved comedy film for millennials who grew up with it. This is because, unlike other comedies of that era, it embraced the awkwardness of the characters, particularly with someone like Michael Cera. Unlike the cartoonish representations of an 80s comedy like Revenge of the Nerds, Superbad presented itself with depth to the characters that enabled millennials (and other generations) to bond with the movie in a more meaningful way. Our second discussion is with Academy Award winning actress Kate Winslet who was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for her turn as photographer Elizabeth 'Lee' Miller in Ellen Kuras' Lee. We first meet Lee in the months before WW2 commences, where Lee worked as a fashion model before forging a path for women journalists in wartime as she became a war correspondent for Vogue magazine.Lee's photography from that era is some of the finest work you will see focused on WW2, yet after the war, she sought to hide much of the work she did, with her son eventually finding many of her photos after she had passed away. Kuras and Winslet choose to frame Lee's story with an impossible conversation that sees Josh O'Connor's Antony Penrose sitting down with Lee Miller to talk through her life and her work in a haze of cigarette smoke. There's an emotional truth here that resonates strongly throughout the film that is keenly felt by the original writing by Penrose himself, otherwise known as the son of Sir Roland Penrose and Lee Miller. In the following conversation, Kate talks about the journey of bringing Lee's story to life, including the importance of engaging in era-specific photography, as well as the need to be able to tell these kinds of stories in todays day and age. This conversation is pulled from two separate discussions, one from a panel discussion, and the second as a one on one interview with Kate. In the first discussion, I was briefly interrupted, which is what you will hear in the following chat.Lee is now available to view on demand in Australia. It is as good as any wartime biopic that you'll see, with Winslet giving a powerful and impactful performance which is deftly supported by a rare dramatic turn from Andy Samberg, who equally deserves recognition and accolades for his work. They're both supported by a cast that includes Oscar nominee Andrea Riseborough, Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, and Alexander Skarsgard. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits

In the latest That Show..., Nick revisits a standout episode of Saturday Night Live that aired on November 21, 2009, when actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt hosted for the first time. This episode is legendary for containing what many consider one of the best opening monologues in SNL history. Gordon-Levitt wowed audiences by recreating Donald O'Connor's iconic "Make 'Em Laugh" number from the classic musical Singin' in the Rain, delivering the routine with incredible skill and energy. It's breathtaking to watch and remains one of the all-time greatest monologues. Alongside this unforgettable performance, Nick highlights some of the best sketches from that night, including a riotous edition of What's Up With That?, the debut of Secret Word featuring Kristen Wiig's hilarious Mindy Grayson, and a talk show parody with Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, Gordon-Levitt, and a spot-on David Matthews as Ozzy Osbourne. All of this fantastic comedy leads up to that unbelievable opening monologue that left audiences speechless. [Ep98]

It's August 1944: the Liberation of Paris is underway, and France appears to slowly be extricating herself from Nazi control. But, on the French western shores, in Saint-Malo, the deafening sounds of artillery fire continue to punctuate daily life, with the Germans making a last-ditch attempt to hold the coastal town. And when the U.S. Army arrive to lay siege to the German positions, the last person expected to be among the Allied forces is a photographer, let alone a female one… Until the publication of The Lives of Lee Miller in 1985 by her son, Antony Penrose, very little was known of the woman who forced her way into occupied Europe, and documented the true horrors of the Nazi campaign. Her photographs capturing Nazi evil went around the world, exposing the atrocities of the Holocaust and the harrowing aftermath of the death of Hitler. Now, her incredible story is being told in a new film, LEE, with Kate Winslet taking on the role of the formidable title character. From a marriage to a man famed for dying himself blue, to a staged photoshoot in Hitler's bathtub, Join Tom and Dominic as they explore the extraordinary story of Lee Miller. This is part 2 of our Totally Todd series. Fall TV premieres are back baby! Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg returns to Comedy Bean Bag along with Scott's nephew Todd to talk all things Hollywood, Todd & Scott's potential sitcom, the new season of B-99, and eating pee popsicles. Then, a game of What Am I Thinking? is played before attempting to memorize the classic Hollywood Facts theme song. Later, Andy embodies Fallon as he gives Scott the complete Tonight Show experience and fun times are had during a game of Would You Rather!
