The status quo of tech today is untenable: we're addicted to our devices, we've become increasingly polarized, our mental health is suffering and our personal data is sold to the highest bidder. This situation feels entrenched, propped up by a system of broken incentives beyond our control. So how do you shift an immovable status quo? Our guest today, Srdja Popovic, has been working to answer this question his whole life. As a young activist, Popovic helped overthrow Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic by turning creative resistance into an art form. His tactics didn't just challenge authority, they transformed how people saw their own power to create change. Since then, he's dedicated his life to supporting peaceful movements around the globe, developing innovative strategies that expose the fragility of seemingly untouchable systems. In this episode, Popovic sits down with CHT's Executive Director Daniel Barcay to explore how these same principles of creative resistance might help us address the challenges we face with tech today. I had the honor of speaking with award-winning Palestinian-American producer, content creator, and storyteller Jenan Matari back in June. Jenan has been harnessing the power of her voice and her social media platform to shine light on Palestine's history and present reality amidst this genocide. We spoke about the ways that social media has been used for Palestine -- from combating propaganda to raising funds for evacuations to mobilizing students and protestors across the world. In Jenan's words, "Palestine is proof that when we connect with each other through applications like this, it can move the needle towards whatever world we're working towards outside of colonialism and capitalism."We also touched on Jenan's Palestinian roots and her work to make PR affordable for minority owned and operated brands through ZAYTOUN Publicity. Life in America often times feels like something is wrong, that something is going on, but we just can't see it. From this feeling people draw conspiracy theories to try to make sense of it, to give it some meaning. The question of how we reshape democracy, walking the fine line between stagnation and populist rage - is the defining problem of our time - with a coherent strategy, we can shape anything. In its absence, we're going to end up spinning in pointless circles, arguing about trivia while the world burns. We set this podcast up months ago, thinking we'd talk about the example Scotland sets for the UK and the rest of the world as a way *maybe) to shape democracy. And then Nicola Sturgeon stepped down and Scotland fell into the kind of turmoil I thought only impacted England. And then the turmoil in England sparked a general election. So now we're talking about how we can use this moment to affect the digital, distributed democracy that we need with two of the smartest people in our eco-system - people who give their entire lives to thinking about this question: Indra Adnan and Pat Kane of The Alternative. This week's guests are Indra Adnan and Pat Kane. Indra is the author of The Politics of Waking up: Power and Possibility in the Fractal Age and Pat is a musician, writer, curator, consultant, activist and futurist and his substack is absolutely essential reading for anyone who wants to keep up to date with the ideas in our eco-system. The reason we're here, they're, Co-Initiators of The Alternative, which is a socio-political platform hosting #PlanetA: new ground to stand on for a flourishing future - and a daily blog and a forum, or perhaps a melting pot - for new ideas and new ways being. Acknowledging that the systems we are embedded in - media, economic, political - take our power away. The Alternative and Planet A ask us how we achieve the world we know deep down is possible. You have to experience The Alternative really to understand what it is to explore ideas at the leading edge of our emergent inter-becoming, to think through the lens of cosmo-localism, to hold new truths of who and how we are and to frame radical new political options in this age of cardboard cut-out politicians spouting ever more stale lines that were out of date in the 80s and are certainly not fit for purpose in the third decade of the twenty first century. So this conversation takes us deep into this territory. Recorded on the day after the EU elections, as France heads to the polls and the UK's general election descends ever further into infantile name-calling and political posturing that no longer even pretends to be the adults in the room, it was - and is - really refreshing to explore ideas of what's possible with people whose entire lives revolve around the concepts of emergent change. With Palestine Action racking up the victories, it was high time that I spoke with veteran actionist Shibby about the network's mind blowing direct action successes. We discuss the recent shutdown of a facility in Tamworth, the viral action that just took place in Scotland, and the high-level, low-level, and covert strategies that have been used by these brave activists. We also touch on the ongoing efforts to ban Palestine Action in the UK, and why such a ban will fail to prevent this network from continuing its righteous work. In addition to hosting Revolutionary Lumpen Radio, Shibby is a veteran activist with Palestine Action. Too few understand the genocide that is raging in the Congo. Human rights activist Gaëtan-Dauphin Nzowo of Friends of the Congo joins me to examine the country's economic & geopolitical significance and how this genocide has been driven by extractive capitalism. As Gaëtan points out, “most Congolese don't have a smartphone to document the atrocities” committed against them, but the labor and blood of the Congolese people continues to supply the materials needed for our smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles. We honor the legacy of independence leader Patrice Lumumba, who was assassinated for daring to speak out against the plundering of his nation by foreign powers. We also discuss how the Congolese struggle for independence is intricately connected with the struggles of folks in Sudan, Haiti, and Palestine. Gaëtan-Dauphin Nzowo works with Friends of the Congo, an organization dedicated to raising awareness MD bringing lasting change to this conflict-plagued region. He is a construction inspector & civil engineering designer, and he currently serves as the president of the National Society of Black Engineers in Portland, Oregon. Gaëtan is the co-founder of New Young Congolese Scholars, and a board member at the Understanding Racism Foundation. I spoke with activist and veteran Greg Stoker about the recent campus protests in solidarity with Palestine, police repression, and imperialism. We explore the concept of the “imperialist boomerang” and how it relates to the brutal crackdowns we're seeing on college campuses.“APD, KKK, IOF, they're all the same!” and “There's no riot here. Why are you in riot gear?” were among the chants heard at the UT Austin Gaza Solidarity encampment. Greg witnessed droves of state troopers in riot gear cracking down on Palestine supporters and arresting over 100. In the face of state repression, UT protestors kettled the cops and even succeeded in pushing the police off campus. He tells me these officers were “tactically outmaneuvered by arts majors,” adding that “as a roided-out cop, that's kind of embarassing.”Greg Stoker served in the US Army special Operations Command during the war in Afghanistan. More recently, he launched Colonial Outcasts, an “anti-imperialist, anti-war, and anti-establishment” podcast that I highly recommend.Follow Greg on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Check out Colonial Outcasts, and watch on YouTube Colonial Outcast Cocktail Crafted by bartender Jesse Torres-45 ml Gin -15 ml Select Aperitivo, other red aperitivo, or Campari-8 ml Simple Syrup-15 ml Lemon Juice -22 ml Grapefruit Juice -Small pinch of salt -Miineral water Combine all ingredients except mineral water in a mixing tin and shake with cubed ice until properly diluted and chilled. This exclusive interview with an A15 comrade explores the historic global economic blockade that took place on April 15th in solidarity with Palestine. Recognizing the global economy's complicity in genocide, folks in 82 cities across 19 countries took action to block the arteries of capitalism. These protestors targeted major economic choke points to maximize impact, resulting in millions if not billions of dollars in lost profits for the capitalist class. As forces mobilized to attack Rafah, the A15 call to escalate resonated with so many people. This global coordinated economic blockade was a complete departure from symbolic acts of protest, as A15 activists directly impacted the material economic system that profits off of genocide. The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Episode 127 Leftism, including Marxism, is operational. It is strategic. It knows what it's doing and how to do it. It might look crazy, but that's deliberate. In fact, Leftists proudly publish and disseminate activist guides for their agenda like the book Beautiful Trouble that spell out for anyone how to do "transformative" activism through deliberate and strategic troublemaking. In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay ties together three activist principles from Beautiful Trouble with a large number of relevant contemporary examples to make clear how Marxist Leftism works and is working in our current American Cultural Revolution. He starts by laying out that "Your Target's Reaction Is Your Real Action," explains how that progresses through "Put Your Target in a Decision Dilemma," and illustrates how the program is accelerated with "Escalate Strategically." He also takes pains to point out that all of their activism contains a performative element, like theater, to sway public or political opinion (e.g., see "Do the Media's Work for Them"), to offer a way not just to understand this activism but to counter it. Join him to learn how Leftists fight and how to fight back, strategically. In this eye-opening discussion, U.S. Presidential Candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and cultural critic James Lindsay delve into the tactics and strategies used by the left in the ongoing culture war. They discuss the challenges within the current political landscape, the rise of the ESG movement, and the strategic maneuvers used to demoralize and exhaust creative problem-solving. Together, they expose the hidden playbook of their opponents and emphasize the need to address the root causes of cultural and political issues. The conversation provides valuable insights into the long-term strategies employed by activist groups to infiltrate and subvert institutions.James Lindsay is a renowned cultural critic, author, and speaker, best known for his incisive analysis of critical theory, social justice ideologies, and the culture wars. Holding a Ph.D. in mathematics, Lindsay transitioned from academia to focus on examining the philosophical underpinnings and real-world implications of postmodern thought and identity politics. Is it possible and good to eliminate violence from social conflicts and what does it mean nonviolence? These are questions we explore with our colleague and friend Nadine Bloch - an activist, facilitator and trainer, a woman who lives the nonviolent methods of social change through her career. She is a member of the organization Beautiful Trouble that collects wisdom and experience with positive change by nonviolent methods.Conflict is often related to violence. Violence is something we usually avoid so desperately that we even refuse to talk about it. And yet, the media, literature, computer games are full of violence that is shown to us and fascinates us. When mentioning violence, we usually think about “a punch in someone's face”, or blood on the streets somewhere far away from us. And yet, there is violence present in our social conflicts, which is not so visible. It may be incorporated in our laws and regulations, in our habits and language…In the podcast we refer to the study on effectiveness of nonviolent movements. In her book, “Why Civil Resistance Works: The Strategic Logic of Nonviolent Conflict,” Harvard Professor Erica Chenoweth explains why civil resistance campaigns attract more people and why they are more effective in changing the regimes as well as in bringing more sustainable change. Podcast moderator: Zuza Fialová Director: Ľubica Stanek Editing and production: Marek Vaňous This podcast series is supported by The Rights Equality and Citizenship Programme of the European Union funded project European Observatory of Online Hate.
New Discourses Bullets, Ep. 35 What if I told you the Woke have a manual for their direct action and you could read it online for free today and learn how to spot their operations and call them out in real time? Well, they do. It's called Beautiful Trouble (https://beautifultrouble.org), and you need to know about it. It's the twenty-first century update to Rules for Radicals (Saul Alinksy), as they shamelessly report for themselves, and fighting the Woke when they engage in direct action (a Marxist tactical term, by the way) is almost impossible without understanding these tactics. In this episode of New Discourses Bullets, host James Lindsay introduces Beautiful Trouble by sharing one of its "principles": "The real action is your target's reaction" (https://beautifultrouble.org/toolbox/tool/the-real-action-is-your-targets-reaction/ ). Join him to learn about this so we can all stop falling for Woke tricks. Stephanie and Michael welcome three guests this week on Nonviolence Radio. First, they talk to Katherine Hughes-Fraitekh and Steve Chase about their work together in Solidarity 2020 and Beyond. Responding to the isolation and suffering caused by COVID, Solidarity 2020 and Beyond offers hope and support to grassroots activists and organizations, providing them opportunities to network, to learn from each other and to collaborate through webinars and trainings. Solidarity 2020 and Beyond draws on the power inherent in sharing experiences and using them to educate and increase solidarity amongst all those who are striving — nonviolently — to bring about change for good, wherever in the world they may be. …what we’re trying to do is to be driven by the grassroots activists, extremely flexible to respond to their needs, and not create an organization but realize there are amazing groups out there – Beautiful Trouble, ICNC, the Einstein Institute, Nonviolent Peaceforce, Metta Center, Waging Nonviolence, all the groups that are working on these issues. And African Youth Movement, Africans Rising – we’re very closely connected with them. And just trying to help bring groups together and find ways to do critical learning, research, and really spread the knowledge both to people that are doing the work on the ground as people learn from each other. …for the vast majority of people in the world that are not directly involved, but may be very hopeless right now, letting them know these amazing things are happening, and these amazing courageous people are out there changing the world for the better. It's not time to give up hope, but really to have a vision for a better future. And that is possible. Katherine Hughes-Fraitekh The inspiring conversation with Katherine and Steve is followed by an equally powerful discussion with Mubarak Elamin, a Sudanese activist supporting the movement in Sudan. Mubarak talks about the astounding strength and courage of the Sudanes people, their determination to stand up for what they need, often risking their lives, working for peace and change: We’re actually learning from the streets of Sudan. It's amazing, the creativity and how people are committed to – first, they're committed to nonviolence and peaceful protest – peaceful actions. And the second thing they are doing also, organizing. And the third thing they are doing is also being really media savvy… And they just demonstrate that day in and day out. They're speaking about, “We’re not out for bread. We're not out for lower prices of gas. We’re out for our own freedom and to bring about some other high-level values to our life and to our people.” And they're so determined to do that. So, it's just really like when you see these, read these stories, it's just heartfelt. The stories that all of these kids – I will call them heroes and warriors in a way or the other.
