We're back with another episode of Adaptation Good or Adaptation Bad?! Hayley had suggested two different books to cover for Pride and we decided to cover both! In this episode, we also discuss out thoughts on Robert Downey Jr. as Dr. Doom, Hayley's thoughts after finally seeing Longlegs, weirdly, the Love, Victor tv show, and largely how our opinions on this book and movie had really diminished with time. Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn't play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone's business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he's been emailing, will be compromised. With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon's junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he's pushed out -- without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he's never met. This title is intended for teens, however, it may contain language or themes that some readers may find offensive. Recorded with permission of Balzer + Bray, an imprint of HarperCollins. Love, Simon (2018) premiered to mixed reviews from the queer community and critics alike. Supporters of the film (like Kevin's mother-in-law) praised the boldness of the first major studio-released gay teen romance, while its detractors criticized the film's aim at universality of a queer experience. This week, Jake and Kevin talk about where this movie hits and misses, particularly compared to one of its coming-out-predecessors, Edge of Seventeen (1998). This charming movie was written and directed by actual gay people and feels ahead of its time in dealing with the sensitivities of coming out. How did Love, Simon get things wrong that Edge of Seventeen got right 20 years earlier? Is everything Lea DeLaria touches gold? What the hell is going on at Simon's high school? Come speculate wildly with us! Our miniseries on our favorite cinematic sissies sails onward with a deep dive into Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Drink up me hearties, yo-ho!

Thanks for tuning into another brand new episode of Read Watch Talk! This week, we're diving into the Simonverse talking about Becky Albertalli's novel "Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda," which has gone on to inspire the film "Love, Simon" and Hulu's latest series "Love, Victor." We answer your questions, discuss our favorite moments and get mad at Lindsey for not 100% loving Michael Cimino as Victor. (To be fair, she's maybe at like an 80% of loving him). Tune into our next episode where we’ll be discussing our next novel, "Little Fires Everywhere" by Celeste Ng and the series on Hulu. Wow there are a lot of soap boxes in this episode! woops! Join Haley and Kayla as they rant, rave, and recap Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda is a 2015 young adult novel and the debut book by American author Becky Albertalli. The coming-of-age story focuses on its titular protagonist Simon Spier, a closeted gay high-school-aged boy who is forced to come out after a blackmailer discovers Simon's e-mails written to another closeted classmate with whom he has fallen in love.
Join Chris and Kaylia to discuss the grossness of the added VP character, how the book dealt with race, the double standard of the default position (straight, white), the importance of Leah, “the tumbler,” and how this light fluffy book dealt with some big serious issues in such a delightful realistic way. Hooray for a joyful gay teen romance! Plus all the ways you can celebrate pride and be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community.
Together, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel formed one of the most popular and critically acclaimed duos in rock history, producing classic songs like "Mrs. Robinson" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." But from the time they met as children, they were also competing with each other — for credit, for attention, and even for money. As the years went on, and they continued to reunite and then swiftly fall apart, their initial gripes never seemed to go away. Paul thought Artie never worked hard enough, and Artie thought Paul had a "Napoleon complex." In the end, their gentle music masked a lot of interpersonal aggression. On this very LGBTQIA+ centric episode, Dexter leads the discussion on Becky Albertalli's gay coming of age novel Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda, the book behind 2018's Love, Simon.
Book Vs Movie (Replay) “Love, Simon” The 2015 novel Vs the 2018 movie The Margos are back in high school with this super-charming story of a teenager, Simon Spier, who is hiding a big secret from his friends and family. Well, except for one person whom he emails daily but has no idea who he is as they use fake names to communicate. You see, Simon (who identifies as “Jacques” in his emails with “Blue”) is gay and struggling with his growing sexual interest. Simon is loved by his parents and friends and feels mostly safe in his Atlanta-adjacent home but he still worries about being bullied in high school by not well-meaning jocks and bullies. Plus, he worries about disappointing his parents (though they come across as being very open-minded in both the novel and film.) After several weeks of...challenging texts, Brenna and Joe dive into the warm comfort of Becky Albertalli's 2015 Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda and Greg Berlanti's 2018 adaptation Love, Simon. The pair break down the book's great writing, problematize the film's depiction of Leah and Ethan and praise what may be the best, most supportive parents in YA. It's a bit of a gush fest, honestly. Plus: Brenna doubles down on Albertalli with a discussion of Simon's sequel/spin-off, Leah On The Offbeat while Joe softly recommends the new Sick Kid film, Five Feet Apart, starring Haley Lu Richardson and Riverdale's Cole Sprouse. Book Vs Movie podcast “Love, Simon” The 2015 novel Vs the 2018 movie The Margos are back in high school with this super-charming story of a teenager, Simon Spier, who is hiding a big secret from his friends and family. Plus, he worries about disappointing his parents (though they come across as being very open-minded in both the novel and film.) In fact, everything seems to be going well for Simon until fellow student Martin finds out his secret and blackmails him into setting him up with Abby (who is the first person Simon comes out to and that causes a problem with his best friend Leah. Lots of “friend” drama here!) Welcome to the YA Cafe, where you’ll find conversations and reviews about Young Adult books for teachers, readers, and caffeine addicts everywhere. We’ll be talking about Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli and its new movie adaptation, Love, Simon. Our guest today is Jeimy Gonzalez, a 6th grade English teacher joining us from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Jeimy is actually the person who handed us a copy of this book when we lived in Puerto Rico, and we want to give a special shout out to The Bookmark, the independent bookstore where it all went down. When we came up for the concept of this show, we were really thinking of sitting in The Bookmark and chatting about YA Lit with Jeimy. In today’s episode… This is our first Book vs. […] The post Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda appeared first on Nouvelle ELA Teaching Resources.
This week we are joined by two guests — Martha's roommate Zach and MJ's brother Marc — to chat about 'Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda,' A.K.A. the book that inspired the movie 'Love, Simon.'Then, inspired by Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda, we talk about books we wish we had growing up, including The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi, Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman, and The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chobosky. And as always, we close the show with recommendations: Zach, Martha's roommate, recommends the Netflix show The Words Most Extraordinary Homes. "The show is perfect because one: it is British. There are two British co-hosts and they are just lovely people, because they are absolutely the most genuine. They just go around and look at beautiful homes and talk about the architecture. It's so simple and so perfect." Marc recommends Bravo's reality TV show Vanderpump Rules. "It is pop culture junk food. It's an awful, awful show. But you see yourself in it, in a strange way." He also recommends Scaachi Cole's essay on Buzzfeed “'Vanderpump Rules' Is The Worst Show On TV That You Should Be Watching." "It's super, super funny read, and it's just a super well written essay." Martha recommends Vince Staple's Go Fund Me project "Get Off My D*ck or Fund My Lifestyle," which was a response to critics saying that Vince Staples raps over low quality robot beats. "I love the song first of all and I love him. But it made me think about the larger cultural conversation about people's critiques about black art, and how a lot of people who write online, or talk about hip hop, don't get it." MJ recommends "I wore Adidas tracksuits for week like Armie Hammer," a first person story where Elle writer Estelle Tang, well, wore Adidas tracksuits for a week like Armie Hammer. "The story she wrote is phenomenal, it's so funny. It's just this really great hilarious article about someone doing this ridiculous stunt." Also mentioned on this podcast: our interview with Tomi Adeyemi, author of Children of Blood and Bone and Alim Kheraj's article for GQ "The Bright Future of Queer Literature Is the Young-Adult Novel." And be sure to check out MJ's review of Love, Simon here.Next week, we're reading A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle. We hope you'll join us. If you're looking for more books coverage, be sure to follow MashReads on Facebook and Twitter.
