Brandon Bryant: It's game on for Handcash

CoinGeek Conversations

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 24, 2021 15:49

Today many online games have their own virtual currency. There's V-Bucks on Fortnite or VC (virtual currency) on NBA 2K. The currencies let you buy exclusive content or upgrades for that game. But they can't be used outside of their own game. Supposing there was a virtual currency that could be converted easily to and from regular money and could be used across a wide range of games. It's coming. It's called the Duro and it's going to be marketed by the Bitcoin SV wallet Handcash. So how does the Duro relate to BSV? Simple: one Duro is just the name Handcash is giving to one two hundred thousandth of a BSV. Or, to put it another way: 1 BSV = 200,000 Duros.By giving a name to that size of unit, the numbers involved for very small transactions will be more user-friendly. So, for instance, if 1 BSV = $160 US, then 10 Duros are worth 0.8 of a cent - the kind of money you can throw around buying something in an online game without having to worry too much.On this week's CoinGeek Conversations, Brandon Bryant, a software developer for Handcash, talks about how the Duro ecosystem will evolve and open access to a range of games, thanks to Handcash's partnering with several BSV startups and with Built by Gamers, an existing esports business whose Taylor Searle featured on last week's edition of the show.So how will newbies find their way into the system? Brandon explains:      “You download a Handcash wallet - and soon we will have fiat rails inside of Handcash so you'll be able to use Apple Pay or your preferred payment method to buy some Duros or some Bitcoin SV. “Then it's just a question of picking some games to try out: “You'll be directed to our app store and inside of the app store, you'll find the Haste Arcade, the NFTY Jigs app and all the other apps that are using the Handcash SDK. And you'll be able to connect to those apps, authorise payments - and you're on your way.”The difficulty of onboarding new users into the BSV ecosystem has long been seen as a limiting factor in widespread adoption of the many products and services available. Handcash has tried to make it as simple as possible: “the goal is to have the sign up process in under a few minutes.”And with Taylor Searle's Built by Gamers' users being encouraged to sign up to Handcash, the prospects for many new users have never looked so good:“Handcash is launching a referral programme. So Built By Gamers has a huge firehose of audience and attention. And they're going to point that at Handcash in this ecosystem. And in return, they're earning a percentage of the profit from the top ups that those users that they refer get. So everyone's economically aligned to just drive growth within the ecosystem.”For game players, there's more to the Handcash connection than just currency because they will also be able to trade virtual goods. Handcash is partnering with NFTY Jigs to support RUN tokens, so digital items and NFTs will also be transferable between games.A relatively recent recruit to the Handcash team, Brandon says he's impressed by the relentless focus that its founders Alex Agut and Rafa Seibane bring to the business:“Rafa and Alex are experts at saying no.” But not in this case: “Handcash is really going after the esports industry and gaming and everything that comes along with that.”

The daily work of tracking and and taking shots as an operator took a psychological toll on Bryant & Since he left, he’s also been struggling with the pressures of going public as a whistleblower. The drone program remains highly under wraps, even as the military continues to carry out targeted strikes around the world. Begun during the George W. Our final 2020 episode, focusing on the kafksesque trial of Julian Assange, is one of the most important, informative and compelling programs of the year, if not of the past 4. We discuss everything from A(ssange) to Z(imbabwe). The combo of the dynamic Sam Adams Award recipients Thomas Drake and Jesselyn Radack is a tour de force. Together, the two are the whistleblower community's Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers or William Powell and Myrna Loy. Jesselyn Radack heads the Whistleblower and Source Protection Program (WHISPeR) at ExposeFacts. As National Security & Human Rights Director of WHISPeR, her work focuses on the issues of secrecy, surveillance, torture and drones, where she has been at the forefront of challenging the government's unprecedented war on whistleblowers, which has become a war journalists, hacktivists, and those who reveal information that the public has right to know but the government wants kept secret.Among her clients are national security and intelligence community employees who have been investigated, charged, or prosecuted under the Espionage Act for allegedly mishandling classified information, including drone whistleblower Brandon Bryant, NSA whistleblowers Edward Snowden, Thomas Drake and CIA whistleblower John Kiriakou. She also represents clients bringing whistleblower retaliation complaints in federal court and other administrative bodies. Previously, she headed the National Security and Human Rights program at the Government Accountability Project, a whistleblower protection organization, served on the DC Bar Legal Ethics Committee and worked at the Justice Department for seven years, first as a trial attorney and later as a legal ethics advisor.Thomas Drake is a former senior executive at the National Security Agency, where he blew the whistle on massive multi-billion dollar fraud, the widespread violations of the rights of citizens through secret mass surveillance programs after 9/11, and critical 9/11 intelligence failures. In 2010, he was charged under the draconian Espionage Act for his oath to support and defend the US Constitution. In 2011, the government's case against him collapsed and he went free in a plea deal. He is featured in the “Silenced” documentary as well as the US PBS Frontline special “The United States of Secrets”.In 2017, Drake received his PhD in public policy and administration. His dissertation “Eyewitness to History in Devolution of Democracy and Constitutional Rights Following 9/11” focused on the centrality of the post-9/11 security driven world and the price paid by those who speak truth about the abuse of power and the erosion of our rights and freedoms. He speaks widely on privacy and security issues and the critical need to protect our inalienable human rights. Mr. Drake has a varied career background that includes teaching, information technology, systems and software engineering, code analysis and military and intelligence experience. He is now dedicated to the defense of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

The late Eduardo Galeano's forthcoming book, Hunter of Stories, has five or ten sentences on each page — each page a tiny story, their combination engaging and powerful. Galeano includes the story of a war resister who chose to die rather than kill, and that of an Iraqi who foretold and pre-grieved the 2003 looting of the National Museum, also the story of former drone pilot Brandon Bryant who quit after killing a child and being lied to that the child had been a dog, not to mention the story of the World War I Christmas truces. These are all true stories, some new and some familiar, all well documented elsewhere, but Galeano doesn't bother with the documentation here. He simply tells the stories — extremely simply, he tells the stories. He inspires me to offer the following, and to search for more. If you have ideas for the very best incidents to recount that fit into the following pattern, please let me know. The stories here are meant, not to depict every aspect of war or peace, much less to cover the entire history of war and peace. There's no need to send me the full list of thousands and millions of stories not included here. The stories below are meant to encourage questioning of war-thinking. Send me the best anecdotes that further that project please. http://worldbeyondwar.org/warstories

The United States’ targeted drone killing program is notoriously fraught with controversy. Just a few pointed concerns include the practice of video game-like killing from afar, the inevitable deaths of non-combatants and the constitutionality of extra-judicial murder away from the battlefield with no due process or transparency. In this fascinating and at times disturbing TYT Interview, The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur speaks with former US Air Force drone operator and whistleblower Brandon Bryant and DRONE filmmaker Tonje Hessen Schei about the process of becoming a drone operator, what it’s like to kill someone you’ve never met from thousands of miles away while watching the event unfold on a screen, the impact of the US drone program on terrorist recruiting, and much more.

Brandon Bryant's story provides a rare glimpse into a secret world and raises questions about the nature of 21st Century warfare. He joined the US Air Force straight out of college. He was picked to join one of the United States' most controversial and important military programmes - the deployment of armed unmanned aerial vehicles, better known as drones - to hunt down and kill some of America's most dangerous enemies. The experience has left him haunted and angry. We find out why.
