Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep Brendon Ayanbadejo relentlessly pursued his NFL dream through eight different teams in four different leagues over a four-year period before finally earning his seat at the table with the Miami Dolphins in 2003, joining a roster that also featured his brother, Obafemi. The chase was worth it as Ayanbadejo became one of the top special teams players in the league, was selected to three Pro Bowls, named All-Pro twice, and appeared in two Super Bowls, capturing a championship with the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII. His impact has been felt far beyond the gridiron, however, through his staunch advocacy for LGBTQ rights. Contributors to this episode include Sean “DJ Prec” Todd and Dolphins Productions. Brendon Ayanbadejo — 3x NFL Pro Bowler turned PE Investor Grew Orangetheory Franchises to Multi-$100M Exit

The Game Plan

While it's not uncommon to see two brothers make it to the NFL one after each other, this is a first for The Game Plan. We're thrilled to have Brendon Ayanbadejo, the younger brother of Season 2 Game Plan guest Femi Ayanbadejo. Which brother brought more energy and enthusiasm to the show, it's really hard to say so we'll let you make that call! Brendon knew the NFL stands for "not for long" and started preparing for life after the game much sooner than a lot of his peers. Despite this, he still had a pretty epic 10-year career in the NFL, going from undrafted FA to making the Pro Bowl 3x as a Special Teams maven and winning Super Bowl XLVII. As he transitioned from the NFL and got his MBA, Brendon helped bring Orangetheory Fitness to his home state of California as a franchisee and developer. He invested a few million as a founding partner of West Coast Fitness which now has over 55+ franchises at the time of a successful exit to a private equity backer a few years ago. As he jokes "Sports is just competitive fitness" and Brendon shares his Pea-Pod Theory that helped him find a problem, passion, and purpose to be dedicated to in his post-NFL career. Beyond that, Brendon's interests are as varied as the roles he played on the football field. He's passionate about health & fitness tech of course but he pairs that with his love of EV & Battery tech, FinTech across Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other Crypto assets. A few companies he's directly invested in include Tonal, Pathwater, Impossible Foods, Hyperice, aXiomatic, and Rubric and we discuss how he enjoys investing both as a VC as well as a PE investor As Brendon likes to say "Through the grief and strife, we have the choice to adapt & innovate, or succumb to the powers that be. The underdog that I am, I choose to adapt & innovate." This was an uplifting and inspirational conversation with a former NFLer thriving in his second act. Born into an interracial family, Brendon Ayanbadejo’s early first years were spent in Lagos, Nigeria. After his parents had decided to go their separate ways, he and his siblings moved back to the U.S. with their mom. “Growing up with a brother only 18 months older than me gave me my competitive edge or a bit of a ‘chip on my shoulder’ sort-of-speak. I felt like I always had something to prove. I had a little bit of talent with a whole lot of hard work.” Speaking with someone as driven and as disciplined as Brendon today gave me immense inspiration and motivation to continue bettering myself from the inside out. “I knew by the age of 10 years old that I wanted to be a professional athlete so my body was going to be that vessel along with my discipline and mentality of sacrifice and hard work.” Taking us back down memory lane to where it all began for him, Brendon shares a tragic story of his childhood best friend, which was one of his earliest reasons behind staying drug-free and 100% focused for his future pro-athlete years that were to come. He mentions how his upbringing in a very open household allowed him to be free with both his thinking and his actions, instead of feeling the need to sneak around and “experiment.” This also led him to his decision to remain focused on his long-term goals. “I think it’s a mixture of nature and nurture that got both my brother and I to the professional level. It started with nature, the DNA to run fast, build muscle mass and the durability, but it’s like having a beautiful piece of wood that you must carve into something special with nurture. That’s the discipline, handwork and strategizing.” From a professional athlete to a franchise owner and huge advocate of serving his community and giving back, Brendon’s interview today covers all angles. He is proof that being unapologetically wealthy doesn’t equal greed. With his hands in helping those with diabetes, The American Heart Association, and helping feed the hungry, it’s safe to say that the world needs more Brendon Ayanbadejo’s. “It’s not about how much money you make – do what you love. If your love turns into dollars and cents than that’s even more amazing.” In This Episode You Will Hear About: Helping Community Serving Impact Entrepreneurship Giving back Success Wealth Business Self-help Interracial Relationships Drive Discipline Pro-Athletes Resources: Orange Theory Fitness Brentwood, Los Angeles Location Instagram @brendon310

Great Caesar is a Brooklyn-based collaborative that aims to create music about things that really matter: love, legacy, and the complexity of human relationships. They started as a high school jazz trio in Madison, CT, and kept their musical friendship alive through six years of college, including Berklee College of Music for saxophonist Stephen Chen ’10. In 2010, the band moved to New York City, in the tide of stories and humanity of the Big Apple, they crafted "Don't Ask Me Why." Given audiences’ positive reaction to the song, they approached filmmaker Alex Colby, who created a bold video juxtaposing the civil rights movement of the 1960s with today’s fight for LGBT equality. With big ideas for set pieces, a large cast and sweeping visuals, the video was an undertaking far beyond anything the band had previously attempted, and when an investor dropped out after the project had already begun rolling, the band turned to Kickstarter to and raised over $50,000–far past their goal of $35,000–to complete the project. Upworthy.com premiered the video on MLK day 2014, and it was quickly shared by supporters including Russell Simmons, Deepak Chopra, Wyclef Jean, Arsenio Hall, Superbowl champion Brendon Ayanbadejo, and countless others, and has amassed over 230,000 views on Youtube. Great Caesar has been gearing up for the release of a self-titled EP produced by Griffin Rodriguez (Beirut, Modest Mouse, A Hawk and a Hacksaw). The EP is set to release at the Daybreaker morning dance party (recently profiled in the NY Times, WSJ, and others) on June 17, just before the band flies to LA to perform at the TEDx Hollywood conference in search of the next big break.

Which House of Congress better represents the people? And how does winning an Oscar affect your health? Some surprising answers today. Why is there so much dysfunction in Congress? Constitutional scholar Ian Millhiser says, simply, it is “deeply baked into the legislative system.” Author and demographer Phillip Longman has some surprising data about how your job determines how long you live, and how winning an Oscar affects health in Hollywood. And Bill Press talks with Brendon Ayanbadejo of the world champion Baltimore Ravens about safety on the gridiron … and gay rights.
