This is an out of the ordinary episode of the Construction Record Podcast for a couple of reasons. For one, right after Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce national managing editor Vince Versace, digital media editor Warren Frey and staff writer Russell Hixson recorded the episode, new broke that Carpetners' Local 27 in Toronto has sought and received resignation by one of its members in the wake of several disturbing incidents where nooses were placed on worksites. Vince has recorded a special introduction to address the issue and keep you as up to date as possible on the situation. We also cover a new report from the Conference Board of Canada funded by the Canadian LNG Alliance looking at the economic benefits of liquified natural gas and the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association's recent set of site tours in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Bird Construction and Stuart Olson also announced that Bird is purchasing the Calgary-based firm for $95 million and we go into the deal and its effects on the industry. Vince also has an interview with Noah Dolgoy, the CEO and founder of Tread, Inc. a firm that's bringing technology to managing construction equipment services for both large and small companies. One other note, we're releasing this episode a week early as Warren is on vacation next week and we also wanted to be as current as possible regarding the Toronto noose incidents. We'll have another episode for you on August 21st and some bonus content next week. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to continuing to chat about the industry! This week on the Construction Record Podcast, digital media editor Warren Frey and staff writer Russell Hixson take a look at some of the stories that came out of Buildex Vancouver, including an article Russell wrote about the construction industry's vulnerability to hacking and the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association's CEO breakfast where ICBA president Chris Gardner called the B.C. construction industry the “unsung hero” of the province's economy. Warren also recently attended CanBIM's Vancouver session and conducted an interview with University of British Columbia professor of civil engineering and associate dean of equity, diversity and inclusion Sheryl Staub-French, who moderated a panel about moving BIM past buildings and out of silos into further integration.

This week on the Construction Record podcast, national managing editor Vince Versace gives an update on the continued labour unrest in Ontario as ICI sector plumbers and steamfitters and sheet metal workers recently went on strike ending 30 years of labour peace with the Mechanical Contractors Association of Ontario.  Vince also looks at how the provincial government will handle skilled trades training in Ontario with the elimination of the Ontario College of Trades. Vince also discusses open vs. closed tendering in Toronto and how the time for a decision is drawing near. He also requests listeners and readers vote for the podcast in Constructionjunkie.com's “Best Construction Podcast of 2019” contest. You can vote here. Journal of Commerce staff writer Russell Hixson and digital media editor Warren Frey take a deep dive into the recently concluded case between J. Cote and Son Excavating and the City of Burnaby which resulted in “reprisal clauses” being upheld, which Russell said could have a chilling effect as companies opt not to do business with municipalities for fear of being put on a blacklist if they take that municipality to court. Warren discussed a recent panel he attended put on by the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association of B.C. and Procore on construction and technology, and we also have a post-panel roundtable with Procore CEO Tooey Courtemanche, Scott Construction president Darin Hughes and Pitt Meadows Plumbing owner Steve Robinson. Provided courtesy of TheOrca.ca.   Proportional representation was soundly defeated last month, but a court challenge of the entire process – a process the Globe and Mail called “Canada’s least honest attempt at electoral reform” – is still on the schedule to be heard in BC Supreme Court.   And a second court challenge against the BC Government, this one opposing an order that all workers of the Pattullo Bridge must join a government-approved union, is also underway.   The common denominator is the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association, who is leading both challenges.   Chris Gardner is the president of ICBA and joined Rick Cluff in studio.

In the debut of the ICBA Cast, Chris Gardner and Jordan Bateman talk BC politics and the 2017 election "result" from a free enterprise perspective. They look at the winners, the losers and what could happen next in BC's first minority government since 1952. Also, some musings on a system that doesn't count 10% of the votes until weeks after election day. Chris is the president of the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association, a longtime private sector company builder, successful election campaign manager and (once upon a time) the principal secretary to the Premier of BC. Jordan is ICBA's Director of Communications, a former Langley Township Councillor, leader of the successful No TransLink Tax referendum campaign, and a noted troublemaking taxfighter (formerly with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation).
