In this week's episode, host Bob Traynor is joined by Dr. Frank Musiek to discuss the upcoming second annual "Pathways: Quest for the Best in CAPD and Neuroaudiology." This virtual symposium, set to take place on April 26, 2025, will focus on advancements and practical applications in diagnosing and treating Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD) and neuroaudiology.Dr. Musiek highlights the event's focus on intervention strategies for individuals struggling with CAPD. The symposium will delve into a range of treatments, including auditory training and aural rehabilitation for both pediatric and adult populations. As interest grows in the neuroplasticity of the auditory network, experts will share practical knowledge on how to address these challenges. Featured speakers include renowned clinicians and researchers like Teri Bellis, Vivian Iliadu, and Gail Whitelaw, bringing both clinical experience and cutting-edge research to the table. The event promises to offer valuable insights into the integration of science and clinical practice, addressing common misconceptions about CAPD and neuroaudiology.Learn more: https://hearinghealthmatters.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Flyer2025.pdfBe sure to subscribe to our channel for the latest episodes each week and follow This Week in Hearing on LinkedIn and X (formerly Twitter).- https://twitter.com/WeekinHearing- https://www.linkedin.com/company/this-week-in-hearing- https://hearinghealthmatters.org/thisweek/

Today's show expands on our previous episode with Dr. Connie McReynolds in which we discussed central auditory processing deficits in kids with autism or ADHD. Technology. I'm of a mixed mind. Broadly, I think technology is a blessing for humanity. It saves lives. In my small corner of the world I interview guests from across the nation over Zoom, and deliver the final product via the magic of podcast. That may or may not be a blessing depending on your opinion of Off the Record. But it goes to show you its reach and impact. But it also strikes me as naive to paint technology as a universal good. Does anyone think smartphones and social media wars have unambiguously improved the country, or how we communicate as a species? How about ransomware and AI hallucinations? One thing that is true: Love it or hate it, technology is here to stay. And is increasingly ubiquitous, ever more powerful, and something we cannot work without. I wanted to talk to someone whose organization is a heavy tech user. Not a vendor representative, but a customer. To get a more objective look at some of the tech we're using in CDI and coding. Joining me for this episode is Kory Anderson, Medical Director of Physician Advisor Services, CDI, & Quality, and Enterprise Medical Staff President at Salt Lake City, Utah based Intermountain Health. It's an organization I consider very tech forward. On this show we cover: His role at Intermountain, a “day in the life” of Kory Anderson Intermountain's CDI/coding tech stack, with a focus on computer assisted physician documentation (CAPD). Impact on MD practice and CDI metrics and out of the box use cases. How smart is current tech? Does it weaken critical thinking, or will it replace CDI and coding professionals? The drawbacks/limitations that vendors don't tell you about. What can't it do, and where it still falls short. Intermountain's ongoing merger with SCL Health, a big obstacle of which includes a migration from Cerner to EPIC A cool new addition to the OTR Spotify playlist

Dyed in the wool backpackers will remember the pitched battle between the keep it realists and the shiny suit mafia that took place in the mid/late-nineties. At that time there was a tangible sense that the ethos of "real" Hip Hop was being subsumed by corporatist tendencies (we weren't entirely wrong about that). Many emcees stepped forward to defend the art form we all know and love, few the zealotry of Cap D of the Chicago based rap dou All Natural. Together with producer Tone B Nimble, Cap D put out several solid releases during the last throes of the backpack era. All Natural's discography alone would have made for an interesting interview but Cap D's second act is almost as interesting as his first. Currently Cap D (government name David Kelly) is Vice President and Chief Legal Counsel for the (WORLD CHAMPION) Golden State Warriors. Even though he has the perhaps the coolest gig in the world he is still a rapper at heart. In this interview Cap talks about his All Natural days, making the transition from the booth to the courtroom, and his upcoming album with Chicago legend Juice produced by Georgia Anne Muldrow. During the intro segment Nate, Dave, and Demone talk crypto crashes, the legacy of All Natural, and why the Warriors have gotten of to a slow start this season. Therapists and educators supporting K-12 literacy have a lot of diagnoses and labels to navigate, and some of them are controversial. In some debates, the diagnosis itself is in question; Central Auditory Processing Disorder being one example. With hyperlexia, some people suggest that there is a certain way hyperlexic people need to learn to read; but the verdict is still out as to whether there is one specific method that is more effective for them. Diagnoses and labels can give us a roadmap. But this roadmap is often incomplete, with unclear directions for getting to our end destination. That means that clinicians need to have a good clinical problem-solving process to navigate all these debates.I believe that labels are useful; but only when we know what to do with them. That's why in this episode, I talk about 4 specific labels/diagnoses (DLD, CAPD, hyperlexia, dyslexia) and what they mean for literacy instruction/intervention. Specifically, I discuss: ✅The DLD vs CAPD debate: The case for DLD and why some people are skeptical about the CAPD diagnosis ✅Why I don't teach "working memory drills" and how I go about addressing working memory issues in a functional way ✅How professionals can engage in healthy discussions about debates in the field without getting defensive ✅A discussion on dyslexia vs hyperlexia and intervention planning for each. ✅Current research on hyperlexia and red flags for misinformation. In this episode, I mentioned an article called Why is it so hard to reach agreement on terminology? The case of developmental language disorder (DLD) by Dr. Dorothy Bishop. Please note I made an error in the original recording and said she was an SLP. I was incorrect; she is a psychologist. I'm talking about this topic because it inspired me to create the system I teach in my online course that teaches pediatric SLPs a system for boosting comprehension and processing, Language Therapy Advance Foundations. I'm doing some extra live Q & A sessions in the members group and also opening up some 1:1 consult availability for members in July 2022, so if you've been on the fence about joining, now's the perfect time to take the leap. If you're an SLP who wants to learn a framework that will allow you to streamline your therapy so you can show up to sessions confident you're giving your students the skills they need to thrive, check out our enrollment page and learn more about how to become a member here.
