This week, I'm so excited to introduce you to my friend and fellow UESCA-qualified ultra coach… Valerie Wong! Val's story is a brilliant mix of determination, adventure, and laugh-out-loud honesty — from growing up in Hong Kong, boarding school in the UK, studying atmospheric science (yes, weather patterns! ☁️), running her first Boston loops, to discovering ultras during the pandemic. She's now an ultra-runner, triathlete, mountain lover, channel swimmer (!!), mum of two, and one of the funniest people I've met in our coaching cohort. This episode is full of real talk, wisdom, and some truly excellent running tips. ⸻ ✨ What You'll Hear in This Episode • Running beginnings in Hong Kong & Boston Val first ran because “everyone in Boston runs!” — her first 1km nearly killed her, but a 5K made her feel unstoppable. • From marathons to Ironman to ultras She completed an Ironman in Austria (“like swimming in Evian water!”) before kids, then rediscovered running during COVID when everything else shut. • How ultras became her ‘freedom sport' during lockdown With races cancelled, she signed up for the distances still allowed — 50K, 70K, then her first 100K. • The magic of mountain running (and how to survive 38°C valleys!) Val shares hilarious and heartfelt stories from Mozart 100, CCC, Snowdon 50K, and Lavaredo — including the moment she burst into tears at an aid station while her crew patched her up like a Formula 1 pit team. • Why introverts often love running Running is where Val recharges, thinks, plans, and escapes the noise. “Everyone go away… it's just me and my thoughts.” • The importance of crew, community & the surprising friendships on the trail Val's stories about crewing, crying, and downhill “controlled falling” are gold. • Training insights from a scientist-runner She talks about RPE, running hills on purpose, and why she increased from 4 to 5–6 days of running to build time on feet. • Identity, motherhood & normalising movement We chat about role-modelling consistency for kids and building a life where movement is normal, not optional. ⸻

This week on the Free Outside Podcast, I'm joined by repeat guest and newly crowned Lavaredo 120K podium finisher Alyssa Clark. We talk all things Lavaredo—what makes this epic European race special (aside from the 11 PM start and absurd elevation gain), how she ran within striking distance of Courtney Dauwalter, and how pink hair and frogs helped her stay grounded mid-race.But that's just the start.Alyssa opens up about the team she's built around her—nutritionist, mental coach, agent, husband, and even the cats. We go deep on how her mental game has evolved, why she talks to frogs mid-ultra, and how rewriting internal narratives (with the help of a herd of mental sheep) has changed everything.We also dig into where the sport is heading—development pipelines, the blurry line between influencers and athletes, why agents matter, and how media obligations are shifting as trail running professionalizes.If you've ever wanted to hear two runners talk about therapy, shoes, mentorship, contracts, and night running tunnel vision all in one episode, this is your jam.Chapters00:00 Exploring Lava-Eido: A Unique Race Experience02:50 Race Day Strategies: Preparing for a Night Start05:48 The Influence of Competition: Running Against the Best09:10 Race Planning: Balancing Goals and Performance11:59 Building a Support Team: The Importance of Collaboration14:53 Nutrition Strategies: Tailoring Fuel for Performance17:46 Mental Resilience: Strategies for Self-Compassion20:56 Embracing Identity: Overcoming Past Challenges23:55 Mindfulness in Racing: Staying Present26:46 Training for Mental Toughness: The Role of Discomfort29:48 The Future of Ultra Running: Evolving Support Systems32:14 The Mental Game in Ultra Running34:01 Breaking Into the Sport: Challenges and Opportunities36:19 The Importance of Mentorship and Development in Ultra Running38:32 Respecting the Elders: Learning from Experience40:04 Navigating the Influencer vs. Professional Athlete Landscape44:35 The Role of Brands in Athlete Development52:20 Building Confidence in Uphill Running55:31 The Role of Agents in an Athlete's Career58:08 Media Obligations and Athlete Performance☕ CS Coffee – Instant coffee that doesn't suck.

AND if you are here in Chamonix, go experience the HOKA basecamp and join in all the Tecton demo opportunities across the week. Named after the earth's tectonic plates, which inspired its parallel dual carbon fiber plate design, the Tecton X franchise has revolutionized the trail racing world – propelling athletes to new heights. The Tecton X3 features an upgraded midsole featuring two layers of PEBA foam, with one softer layer on top for cushioning and impact, and a slightly firmer layer underneath for agility proprioception on technical terrain. The propulsive parallel carbon fiber plates have evolved – now featuring winglets, the wider plates wrap strategically up the sidewall for additional control in key zones. In the upper, a new knit collar acts as a gaiter to help mitigate trail debris from entering the shoe. I had the pleasure of once again sitting down with the Mountain Monster, Marisa Romeo. (Yes, I made that name up, but just look at her Strava!) The last time we spoke she had just crushed the field at the Looking Glass 100K in November of 2023. I wanted to have her back on to hear all about her latest race, the Lavaredo 120K, that takes place in Italy. To say that I am jealous that she as able to travel to this part of the world and run in these mountains is an understatement, but I loved living the race through her words and her experience. We talked about her training, her strategy, every step of the race, and her thoughts throughout. And let's not forget that she got to witness a day of the Tour de France! So, what is next for Marisa? The sky is the limit, but in her mind...it better be something epic. Thank you, Marisa, for once again coming on Facing Vert. I always love our conversations! The German Dynafit athlete Rosanna Buchauer is the new queen of Lavaredo. Last weekend she ran an incredible race leading from start to finish at the highly competitive Lavaredo Ultra Trail 120K in Cortina, the heart of the Dolomites in Northern Italy. Rosanna is coming back from a rough winter battling injury and self doubt, raced her heart out and gained back her confidence with this stellar performance. Now, as she's recovering and slowly restarting her next training block she has her eyes set on CCC late August at the UTMB Finals in Chamonix.
In this episode, Keely, Corrine, and Hillary discuss their experiences at both the Western States 100 and Lavaredo trail races from last weekend. They kick off the episode by talking about the “Here for the Women's Race” movement at the Western States 100 and then dive into a viewer question about hiking versus running on steep terrain and how to determine when one is more efficient than the other. The Western States 100 produced the fastest times in history, with Katie Schide and Jim Walmsley winning the women's and men's race, respectively, in the second fastest times in course history. They talk about the rest of the field, fun storylines, and Keely talks through her experience pacing Rachel Drake to a top 10 finish. Disclaimer: they got skunked! We thought long and hard about alien physiology before recording this great episode! The main topic was a wildly cool wrinkle in training science. Across all different types of events, the most predictive variable for performance is often how fast an athlete can go at VO2 max effort. That could have massive implications for how we think about training and what we consider "specificity" for long events! We discussed why we think that is, along with workout designs, the use of hills, and how much we want to get aliens on a treadmill. ET can phone home after ET does a VO2 max test. And this one was full of our favorite topics! Other topics: Addie dog going strong at nearly 12 years old, the upcoming Olympic Trials on the track, our wild travel schedule between the Trials and Western States, stroller running and our worrisome experience, sodium bicarbonate hacks, workout design, the power of using set-based structures, running economy and other predictors in ultras, a new study on fatigue resistance/durability and its relation to training status, Alex Honnold running the Lavaredo 50k, Roger Federer's wonderful speech on perseverance, messages about ferritin increases from liposomal iron, Joey Chestnut's ban from the hot dog eating contest and what it says about sponsorships, the increasing cost of shoes, Keely Hodgkinson's low-volume approach with lots of cross training, and hot takes. When the aliens arrive, we should give them a cup of chocolate Nesquik so they can experience our finest delicacies. Then it's straight onto the treadmill for some podcast content. We love you all! In this episode, I caught up with multiple South African champion Ashleigh Moolman Pasio. We talked about how she ended up in Banyoles near Girona, the Rocacorba Cycling business, her QOM Strava record on the famous Rocacorba climb near Girona, and the challenge she set herself to get the best women's time below 30 minutes.Ashleigh will share her advice on how to pace yourself when aiming for your PR because pushing just a little over your limit for half of the climb will ultimately cost you later. The Rocacorba will never attain the status of an Alpe d'Huez, Stelvio, or Tre Cime di Lavaredo, but thanks to a lucky combination of geography, local patronage, and technology, It has already become much more than a footnote in cycling folklore.We hope you'll enjoy this fully packed and insightful episode with Ashleigh Moolman Pascio of AG Insurance - Soudal cycling team CHAPTERS00:00 Welcome 05:20 Live From Columbia 09:31 Rocacorba Cycling, How It All Started20:23 Rocacorba21:45 A Bucket List Climb, the Pros Test Climb29:29 Strava Segment, Mastering the Pacing Strategy36:20 When Getting to the Top 38:49 Tips for Descending Rocacorba Safely41:16 Training Intervals and Efforts 48:41 The Benefits of Riding with Local Guides in Girona52:08 Rocacorba Strava QOM56:25 Ending – LINKS –Rocacorba CyclingRocacorba Strava SegmentAshleigh Moolman PascioHost: Soren JensenSEND US YOUR QUESTIONS If you want your questions to be answered on air, be sure to submit your questions by sending us a message on social media or by email to podcast@castelli-cycling.com Hosted on Acast.
