In today's episode, we speak with Hillary Allen about her love for sky running and trail running, and how she fuels for these challenging courses. We'll also dive into how her nutrition changed after her life-threatening injury.  About Hillary Allen:My career as an endurance athlete has not been straightforward. Through injury, setbacks and being told I would never run again, I've had to re-think what I consider impossible, as I continued to push myself, believing in my best athletic days ahead.Early in my career, I earned the nickname “Hillygoat” for my love of the uphill and my ability to run fast on steep, technical mountain terrain – a style of running known as Skyrunning. I won the US SkyRunner Series in 2014 in my debut season and since then, I have raced all over the world, racking up wins and course records, establishing myself as one of the best mountain ultra runners in the world. In 2017 I had a life threatening accident, where I fell 150 feet off of a ridge-line during a Skyrace in Tromsø, Norway. I broke a total of 14 bones and I was told I would never run again – let alone compete at the elite level. After several years of rehab and recovery, I made a full recovery and returned to elite level racing, running some of my longest and most challenging races post-accident.I maintain the belief that ‘your best athletic days are ahead of you,' if you're willing to work hard for what you love and never give up on yourself.I also am a scientist, I have a masters degree in neuroscience and physiology and structural biology, I'm a running coach, and a gravel cyclist. Please note that this podcast is created strictly for educational purposes and should never be used for medical diagnosis and treatment.See you in the next episode!***Join our 2022 Holiday Challenge here: https://p.bttr.to/3Cy1gE8New customers save 10% off all products on our website with the code NEWNR10 here: https://nutritional-revolution.com/products/Find our Menopause Support Meal Plan here: https://nutritional-revolution.com/product/menopause-support-meal-plan/If you would like to work with our practitioners, click here: https://nutritional-revolution.com/work-with-us/If you're interested in sponsoring Nutritional Revolution Podcast, shoot us an email at nutritionalrev@gmail.com.***Mentioned:Hillary AllenWebsite: https://hillaryallen.com/Instagram: @hillygoat_climbsOut and Back: A Runner's Story of Survival Against All Odds: https://amzn.to/3yiFmSESports nutritionKlean Athlete Klean Collagen + Vitamin C: https://amzn.to/3EjWBa9Tart Cherry Juice: https://amzn.to/3MhbMD4Thorne Curcumin Phytosome 500 mg Turmeric Supplement: https://amzn.to/3yihQp1Skratch Wellness Hydration Drink Mix:  https://amzn.to/3CEnkwGSkratch Hydration Drink Mix: https://amzn.to/3Maq8VHNuun Sport Tablets: https://amzn.to/3CEJtuXSpring Energy Gels: https://amzn.to/3rHCjj6JoJé Bars: https://amzn.to/3CEKCCH

Hillary opens up about a near-death experience while participating in her sport. One of the World's best trail runners, Hillary was competing in a Skyrunning race in Norway when she fell 150 feet off a cliff, breaking 14 bones and was told she would never run again. We discuss how Hillary handled this overnight shift from being a professional athlete racing at the highest level of elite sport to not being able to move, and the recovery journey she has been on these past 5 years that has challenged her identity and sense of worth. We talk about not ignoring your feelings, strategies for processing tough emotions including writing and mantras, and finding your sense of self outside of athletics. Faced with plenty of evidence to the contrary, Hillary shares how she manifested an unwavering belief that her best athletic days were still ahead of her: Hillary had to believe this and bet on herself long before she could see any results. We discuss finding motivation during injuries and setbacks, including making recovery your sport, developing rehab goals and to-do lists. Despite barely being able to move, let alone train, Hillary explained how she shifted her mindset around nutrition, recognizing her body's needs for even more nutrients than normal to repair her injuries and build her back stronger. Hillary shares how she noticed her body and appetite change, but still avoided restricting calories knowing that doing so would only prolong her recovery and healing journey, and instead focusing on consuming anti-inflammatory foods and bone broth.  Hillary and I chat about nutrition for bone health, muscle building and recovery, as well as the importance of nutrition timing. We touch upon avoiding within-day energy deficits and under-fuelling to improve bone health, prevent injuries, reduce cortisol, and optimize training: nutrition is a superpower for faster recovery and performance!  Hillary speaks about the challenging 5 years since her accident full of more setbacks, injuries and even more broken bones, and how she has stayed motivated and hopeful that she would one day run again. She opens up about how she feared racing and loosing her “elite athlete” status, ultimately overcoming these doubts by focusing on running for herself and her own enjoyment. We discuss letting go of previous senses of self and comparison, handling recovery setbacks even when you think you are doing everything “right”, and sharing the whole journey, not just the highlights. Hillary shares her key pillars through the highs and the lows, running and recovery: nutrition, sleep and mindset. We finish off discussing Hillary's future running goals, taking on crazy long and steep ultra trail races, and now racing gravel bikes professionally too! Through injury, setbacks and being told I would never run again, I've had to re-think what I consider impossible, as I continued to push myself, believing in my best athletic days ahead. In 2017 I had a life threatening accident, where I fell 150 feet off of a ridge-line during a Skyrace in Tromsø, Norway. I broke a total of 14 bones and I was told I would never run again – let alone compete at the elite level. The cliff note version is this: after several years of rehab and recovery, I made a full recovery and returned to elite level racing, running some of my longest and most challenging races post-accident. It's what led me to believe that ‘your best athletic days are ahead of you,' if you're willing to work hard for what you love and never give up on yourself. I am also a scientist, with a masters degree in neuroscience and physiology and structural biology; I'm a running coach, and a gravel cyclist too. A² The Show - Ep 299 Feat. Hillary Allen Hillary's career as an endurance athlete has not been straightforward. Through injury, setbacks and unexpected challenges, Hillary's had to re-think what she considers impossible. Early in her career, Hillary earned the nickname “Hillygoat” when she proved her ability to run fast on steep, technical mountain terrain – a style of running known as Skyrunning. Since then, she has raced all over the world, racking up wins and course records, establishing herself as one of the best mountain ultra runners in the world. In 2017 she had a life threatening accident, where she fell 150 feet off of a ridge-line during a Skyrace in Tromsø, Norway. She was told she would never run again. After several years of rehab and recovery, Hillary made a full recovery and returned to elite level racing, racing some of her longest and most challenging events post-accident. She maintains the belief that ‘your best athletic days are ahead of you, if you're willing to work hard for what you love.' Hillary also studies and teaches science, using her masters degree in neuroscience and physiology and structural biology. She is also a trail running coach, and a gravel cyclist. Welcome to Episode 41 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring elite skyrunner, Hillary Allen. Hillary is such a fascinating, multi-dimensional person and athlete. In addition to establishing herself as one of the best mountain ultra runners in the world (hence her trail nickname of "Hillygoat"), she is a scientist and teacher, with a masters degree in neuroscience, physiology and structural biology, a trail running coach, a gravel cyclist, and now also an author. Her book, Out and Back: A Runner's Story of Survival Against All Odds, shares her story of survival and recovery after she had a life threatening accident during a 50k Skyrace in Norway. She was nearly halfway through the race when she fell 150 feet off an exposed ridge, breaking two ribs, fracturing her back, rupturing a ligament in her foot, and breaking both wrists. It's a miracle that she was alive, and that she did not injure her head or suffer from other more severe outcomes. She was told she would never run again, but after a lot of rehab and mental fortitude, Hillary made a full recovery and returned to elite level racing. Hillary and I did not rehash the details of her accident , as she has done that plenty of times already. However, it's an incredibly powerful and amazing story - so if you are not familiar with Hillary or even if you are, I encourage you to read or listen to her book, and/or check out some of her other podcasts interviews that she has done that deep dive into all the details of her accident and recovery. I loved her two episodes (Episode 49 and 168) on The Morning Shakeout with Mario Fraioli,  and Science of Ultra had a great one too (she has been doing the podcasting rounds lately for her book, so you can find her all over). Instead, as you'd expect from my Athlete Nutrition Profile Series, we focused on the nutrition side of her story - how it has evolved throughout her life and the role nutrition has played in her extensive and ongoing recovery process - with a few detours along the way (Bugs as food anyone? Yep, we go there!). Hillary, thank you for chatting with me! You are such an inspiration and I hope to see you in Santa Cruz during your book tour. I'd take you for a run in the redwoods, but even with you coming back from an injury, there's no way I'll be able to keep up with you!Enjoy!Links & Resources:Hillary's WebsiteFollow on Instagram, Facebook, and TwitterHillary's book - Out and BackOther Announcements:Please show your support by leaving a rating and/or review on iTunes Have nutrition questions, a guest or topic request, or any other feedback?
